      Wow! I heard tht you had to buy a minimum of about 300 points to buy in back then....do you know if that was the case?

    • @holliep1901
      @holliep1901 4 года назад +2

      Sally Lovett - Oddly, Mom says they DID buy 300 points but insisted that they didn’t require that to buy-in - it just was the figure they worked out so they could do 2 weeks in a 2 bedroom back then.

    You're so dang cute! I found myself smiling throughout the whole video. Yes, shoulder pads, bangs, scrunchies, comb-overs and the gold necklace on the father in the pool! The old Toon Town! The traditional ear hats were so refreshing to see. I used to order these tapes/discs when it was much more difficult to feed my Disney-desiring soul! Since we're talking DVC, isn't it amazing that the DVC billboard on Lake Buena Vista Drive has stood the test of time and is still standing today? I was looking at it when there in June in awe of how long it has lasted.

  • @roseytano6385

    Hey Jen- love your channel. We are DVC members since 1992. YES, you got free tickets to the parks for half the amount of people each villa could sleep. So, if room slept 8, you got 4 free for length of stay, for every stay, through 1999! I believe with incentives, we paid $47/point! It’s been wonderful for our very large family.

  • @EPCOTVA
    @EPCOTVA 4 года назад +7

    The park passes were a HUGE selling point for us. We bought in 1993 with 190 points which was the minimum you could buy at the time. We added resale market contracts for 60 and then 50 points before the restrictions were placed on those. We bought DVC before we had a home or kids. It was the best decision we ever made. We did get a home later and a couple of kids. :-p They grew up going to DVC resorts.

    Discovered Retro channel several months ago and watched this same video. As I first went to WDW in 1992, a lot of their footage is from that area. It’s nice to know my memory of the crowds back then is spot on. Oh, did anyone go to the sales presentation at OKW or DVC back in 1992 or so? It was in itself a memorable event with absolutely zero sales pressure. Sadly, we didn’t purchase until 2000. And Jen, it was the more thorough understanding of the basics and especially that the points/night can be shifted throughout the year but the total points/resort must remain the same.

    • @JenLefforge
      @JenLefforge  4 года назад +2

      Yeah, honestly, Jack? And I think you'll agree with me here . . one of my pet peeves is how little detail they give you in the presentations and there are a lot of specifics that I feel people really do need to be aware of when purchasing! It's one of the reasons I started my channel!

    • @jackpast
      @jackpast 4 года назад

      Jen Lefforge ...and doing a great job, I must add. I remember that at the presentation in 1992 the DID stress that the ‘perks’, i.e. free park tickets, COULD go away at any time!

    My husband loves to rub in the length of stay passes he enjoyed as a kid. He spent 2 weeks in Disney every summer. They were a family of 4 staying at what is now old key west in a 2 bedroom villa. Can’t wait till we can buy our own resale contract and give our kids the same magical childhood. Grant it they can still go with gramma and grandpa who still have their old key west contract. But we still want our own :)

I am definitely not rich and far from it, but I am now a DVC member. It is about the only way that I have felt that I have "made it" in adulthood.

  • @ntexas100

    Our first trip to DW was in 1992 and we were hooked. We became DVC members in 1994. I want to say (without looking at the documents) the price per point was around $40. My wife and I still use our points to go to DW and now my daughter is using our membership to take her family. When people ask, I tell them not to look at DVC as an "investment." It's a way to secure a family vacation for a very long time. Just yesterday I was looking at the rack room rate for a one bedroom villa at Old Key West Resort. $400/per night in January and $600 for early November. I'm so glad we became members when we did.

    • @JenLefforge
      @JenLefforge  4 года назад

      Yeah, I love adding up how much we would have spent on our rooms .. . thanks for watcing!

    • @ntexas100
      @ntexas100 4 года назад +1

      Just to add something. When we became members in 1994 we always booked a one bedroom. Our children (5 and 10 year old then) would sleep on the sofa bed. All of us received free park passes for our entire stay. So, even though we only had a one bedroom, our children still received free passes. I don't know for sure, but maybe if four adults stayed in the one bedroom then they would only give the members free passes.
      I remember 15 years ago on a certain Disney message board me and a guy were arguing about the "inventment" of DVC. We went back and forth with numbers and figures. LOL! Then two years later he was saying he was going to join DVC after taking a tour. I just thought it was funny. I can't imagine spending the money on a Disney trip nowadays without DVC.

    Omg...this is excellent! Cracks me up. There is one scene where the kids are wearing striped shirts, overall type things and oversized hair bows. I may have a picture or two of myself at Disney in almost the exact same outfit.

    1993, I was 11 years old and had never been to WDW but loved the commercial of Mickey waving from the castle or from Spaceship Earth from Wonderful World of Disney. I finally got to go in 1999 on a school trip and now have taken my own family several times. Had to miss this years trip but planning a huge one for next year.

    My wife and I have gone to WDW at least once a year since its opening, I can remember going to the DVC orientation session in the early 90's and seeing this video. Like you, however, buying into DVC was not possible at that time. We have thought about it from time to time as the years have passed and may do it yet - who knows?!

    Using points for non WDW vacations seems to be the pre-curser of Adventures By Disney in Disney speak ABD. Also before pre-dates early availability for DVC on DCL (Disney Cruise Lines). So many options now. If it was in the cards my DVC home would be the Villas at the Grand Floridian.

    As a family member of an RCI member I would not call RCI ‘really good’ or ‘lots of options’. Most available resorts are old and dated in places you probably don’t want to go. We have had a few good resorts in off seasons but that is not what they make it out to be.

      @@JenLefforge It did play in the hotel rooms. There were also "sales booths" at Downtown Disney and the Parks to sign you up for the tour. We took the tour on the last day of our trip. We purchased that day and extended our trip by one day to stay at the DVC resort.

  • @nancytaylor7525
    @nancytaylor7525 4 года назад

    How fun! Disney does build well. And they really do take care of their properties. They were in need of updates but, really think of how many people have used the rooms?
    I really wished we took the time for a tour in 2010 but, we wanted to spend our time in the parks. And paying cash in 2017 was a much better idea.

    They showed a lot less of the theme parks as they do in the current video today. Today they show a lot more of how you can easily get to magic kingdom just "steps away" from your DVC villa lol. The inclusion of chip and dale was pretty cute tho!
