    Funny…I’m in the process of moving down to Florida’s gulf coast, a bit south of Sarasota, and was thinking earlier today about possible good astrophotography sites in the state. And then this video shows up in my Recommended list. ☺️
    The Sigma 20/1.4 appears to be a banger from all reports I’ve seen so far, so I might have to add it to my kit. Got the 14-24/2.8, which is a fine lens, but something faster and high quality across the frame wide open is probably too much to resist.

      I've been pleasantly surprised by the beauty of Florida. I love the daily thunderstorms in the summer and the frequency of good sunsets is unmatched by any place I've lived before. There are more places I've yet to explore for dark skies, but I think Kissimmee Prairie will be a regular spot.

    Thanks Ian, just bought (used) the old Sigma 20mm F1.4 Canon EF mount as Canon haven't released the RF mount yet. Do you know is there any difference in quality of image from the old lens to the new mirrorless lens? Thanks again for all the inspiring video content.

      The DSLR Sigma 20 F1.4 is one of the worst 20mm lens I have ever owned, BOAT load of Coma is pretty close to useless for Astro in my opinion.

    • @LonelySpeck
      @LonelySpeck  2 года назад +1

      The older 20mm 1.4 from Sigma that was designed for DSLRs is not really comparable to this new lens.

    The sagital coma on 24mm is tiny but noticeable not only at corners. Mmmh I want the 24mm for the price and size. Also I like the F1.4 aperture, focus lock and rear filter adapter but think to consider other options now like Sony 20mm F1.8 G ...

    Between the Sony 20 F1.8 and the Sigma 20 F1.4, other than the light gathering capability difference between the F1.4 and F1.8, which lens you think is optically better, especially in terms of wide open edge sharpness, coma performance...... I have the Sony 20 1.8 and pre-ordered the Sigma 20 1.4 DG DN, just wondering what's your take on this, thanks.
    From the sample picture I saw posted in DPreview, I saw fair amount of coma when shoot wide open, maybe just about same as what I normally see from my Sony 20 1.8G, but without side by side comparison I can't say for sure, anyways, looking forward to hear your comments on this comparison. Thanks again.

      Looks like the variance lens to lens is large for the sigma unfortunately. Lots of reviews say its very sharp and optically great, but a few have said its not that great. Northrup just uploaded a video comparing it to the Sony and said the sony is better, looking at his photos compared to lonely specks and others it looks like Northrup has a lemon almost.

    Great video Ian, nice to see your face again! Is your camera body ISO invariant? I'm wondering why you shot at ISO 640? Looking forward to seeing more of your videos 😊

    • @owengee7415
      @owengee7415 2 года назад

      I think all sony cameras are ISO invariant

    • @professionalpotato4764
      @professionalpotato4764 2 года назад

      Pretty much all Sony-made sensors are ISO invariant these days. So almost anything Nikon, Fuji, Olympus, Panasonic etc carries are ISO invariant. Canon makes their own so some aren't and some are.

    • @LonelySpeck
      @LonelySpeck  2 года назад +3

      It's "dual gain" so it has a jump from ISO 500 to ISO 640. At ISO 640, the amp kicks in and gives a noise improvement. There's no advantage to going higher than 640, so I keep it there to retain dynamic range in highlights (mainly star centers and distant light polluted areas). Check out the shadow improvement chart on photonstophotos.net

    Overall would you say the Sigma 20mm is the best Sony E-mount lens for astro? And would you say it is a better lens than the Sony GM 24mm 1.4?

  • @christianavalos7096
    @christianavalos7096 7 месяцев назад

    Which would you recommend between this 20 and the new sigma 14 dg dn? I mean, 6mm is not much of a difference but their price difference is. I can afford both, but i also don’t want to just throw away money for minor differences.

    • @LonelySpeck
      @LonelySpeck  7 месяцев назад

      6mm is a lot larger of a difference at the short (wide) end. The 14mm is 25% wider field of view than the 20mm. As more of a personal preference, I'd rather have a physically smaller lens so the 20mm is preferable to me.

    Hmm wish I could see samples of the 20 on a tracker and a higher resolution sensor it's hard to get a sense of star quality. I can also definitely see CA in the corner stars and im wondering how that compares to the sony

    I've wanted these since they were announced. Almost enough to buy a sony body but everytime I see those green stars (like in your video) I am put off. Maybe I can adapt them and use them on Canon / Nikon body via an adapter.

      wanted to say the exact same thing, I still don't understand why Sony won't give people the option of just turning off the stupid baked in noise reduction, there is literally not a single good reason not to do that.
