You're still going to hear it in the comments. Wow, that was a perfect side by side comparison. I have been dying recently with the low light in my videos (lost so much in Scotland). BUT, I still don't find the stabilization to be good enough to switch. Both the Ace Pro 2 and the default GoPro have too much washing machine twist. GoPro Max Lens Mod takes care of that and gives me rock solid stabilization. Would love to switch to the Ace Pro 2 for the low light, but the stabilization is still not there yet.

We have compared both cameras and watched the videos on a 65” Phillips OLED TV. First of all, tell you that Spain is a very sunny country and much more in Andalucia (south of Spain) and surely that has its influence. - COLORS: much more natural and real in GoPro. The test was done on a very sunny day. Personally I don't like the blue of the sky with the ACE (it was not what we watch). - WIND REDUCTION: we were in Tarifa (windy town, kite surf town) and the result was bad in both cases. In my case I fixed it using a death cat, it's not difficult despite the grids. - UNDERWATER. Much better the GoPro. The colors come out very distorted in the ACE PRO. - SKI: the season is not yet here in Sierra Nevada (Granada) but I have the feeling that it is similar to Mammoth. So I will wait... - MINUTE 3:14 (contrast). I haven't tested it but I'm sure it can be fixed with ND filters and/or playing with EV. - LOW LIGHT conditions: Much better Ace Pro. But, for me an action cam is not for this purpose and I use my DJI OSMO POCKET 3 for it. The results are amazing as you can see on my youtube channel: www.youtube.com/@calm-walk. Greetings from Spain! I love your reviews!
i've always skipped a generation on GoPro and have gone from the 3, to 5 ,7, 9 and now 11. From seeing the 13 release, it felt like a backwards step for me so didn't bother. Each and every single generation i've also nerded out on getting audio right and have tried all sorts. I have audio dialed now on my GoPro 11 without it looking too stupid. So nice to see that finally someone is thinking about how to make audio good out the box.
Besides all the GoPro problems, it gives a more natural color/image than Ace Pro 2 and Action 5 Pro. Both of the two cameras give an oversharpened image.
I understand comparing the cameras on like-for-like settings, but i know that most of the time these settings are not nearly optimised for each camera. I'd love to see a comparison of these 2 with the dji action 5 pro as well, where some time is taken to find the absolute best settings for each platform, and compare those settings. I know its not representative of the majority of mtb action camera users, so i can understand why this video hasn't been made, but as a camera nerd, i'd love to see it done.
I’ll give it to insta on low light, but that’s not a big deal for my application. Honestly, in all the side by sides the GoPro just has better, more natural color. The sky on insta was straight neon, and when the sun was behind you in the beginning it just looked like if I was in Premiere and cranked the shadows slider all the way up and the highlights down. That’s not dynamic range, that’s just the curves they decided to bake in. Then you can’t undo that look. I’d certainly rather shoot in flat mode on GoPro and choose whether I want to make your face glow orange even though the sun is directly behind you, or let it actually look shadowed, like it is.
You've done the lowlight comparison. Can you now do a bright light action comparison please? And what is the weird glow around the mountains during the intro?
Bright light comparisons will look pretty much identical between the two cameras minus the Insta having a wider field of view and much better audio in windy environments.
You mentioned that this was the first camera ever to address the noise issue but GoPro has had their media mod for a while and cleans up sound pretty good. It would be nice if it wasn’t an extra item you had to buy but at the 360’s price point I think you still money on a GoPro setup.
Media mod audio is excellent and eliminates almost all wind noise , problem is over time taking the mod on/off the camera eventually wears out the port on the camera so it cant read the media mod and defaults back to the camera mics, lasted less than a year on my Hero 12.
The Ace Pro 2 is a very good action camera. The only limitations left on it for me is the very odd I-Log function and the lack of 10-bit to go with it. I think if Insta360 could sort out the log function, add 10-bit, and also give users the ability to set the degree of noise reduction like rival cameras, they'd be there. What I do really like about it is the lens. Finally Insta360 has one of the best wide angles of any action camera. Likewise, if GoPro introduce a new GP3 processor and gave low light performance a boost things would even up. The Action 5 Pro is super awesome, particularly in log mode, and its low light is also pretty darn good. DJI just need to figure out what's going on with its rather funky standard colour profile.
I'd like to see a comparison between the Ace Pro and the Ace Pro2. I bought the Ace Pro last year and wonder if there are enough changes to justify the upgrade
Knew it was you, Loam Wolf on that Insta360 launch live! Followed you for a couple of years now due to my interest in eMTBs and glad you chose the AcePro2!
The GoPro low light footage looks like it came from an action movie scene (motion blur and darker) while the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 looks like it comes from a family TV series (brighter and more detail).
the one thing that almost makes me consider the low light performance not a win for the 360 is the colors look a lot more dull in the low light compared to the gopro, aside from that the audio quality on the ace pro 2 is so good, might pick one up just because of that
Would love to see a night ride. Been doing some with the Action Pro 5 and it’s good, but has a feature where you get some vibration from movement at night, but not during the day. The audio on the OA5 is great, though. Not even a spot for wind muffs, but it hasn’t seemed to be a major issue. Insta360 2 looks overall rad. May have to get one for night rides if it is better at night.
Thanks for the review. With significantly better video and audio processing, hands down AP2 is the clear winner compared to GoPro.. Horizon Lock is an important feature I use on GoPro with Ultra Wide Lens Mod. Does Purevideo mode give option for horizon lock?
This is a fantastic review. The comparisons side by side and unbiased view points is well structured. Yes you have a partnership with Insta360 but you have in the past said when they fall short and others were better. Great video
I have wind muffs all over my GP10, but it’s time to upgrade. I’m leaning towards the Ace Pro 2 over the rest. I noticed you had wind reduction ON, even with the Ace Pro 2’s new wind muff. On my GoPro 10, I’ve always switched the wind reduction OFF after adding third-party muffs because keeping it ON makes me sound like I’m in a hallway. Any thoughts on turning OFF the wind reduction on the Ace Pro 2 now that it comes with a built-in wind muff? FYI, I shoot family travel vlogs at 60fps.
Same here! I was extremely skeptical of leaving the wind reduction mode on like Insta360 suggested to me. I tested both settings and with wind reduction off, it seems to pull audio from all mics in a raw way (which makes sense), so you’d need to separate out the specific front mic to get clean audio in windy situations. They way they tuned the wind reduction mode on the AP2, it basically just does the mic isolation for you, from my tests.
I started to watch the video and as soon as he said "I work with Insta 360" I stopped. We know the outcome of the video at that point. I'll watch an unsponsored unbiased review instead.
Check out DC Rainmakers video for an unsponsored review and comparison. For mine, I don’t want any untrue or unfair comparisons to be made, which is why I simply showed the direct, side-by-side comparisons, with all settings clearly shown. Hope that helps!
The only aspect of that camera that I’ve seen is how the audio is by far the worst out of the three, so that’s an instant fail for me. But you can think whatever you want 😄
@@KentRoads I have an older GoPro hero 9 which (I think) lacks external audio connectivity. Can you recommend an aftermarket audio setup? I would love to keep the camera in a waterproof case.
I’m glad to see some real competition for Go pro. I’ve never been impressed with their cameras in anyway. Battery life is way too short, and the interface is clunky.
Does the Ace Pro 2 has the 360° Horizon Locker option? ...because I would like to use it in mtb too and I like to have a sort of "max lens mod" version that gopro has.. Wait for your reply. Great job man!
Do you have any opinions on GoPro max lens mod vs stock ace2 fov. I run the gopro vertical with a mod on to give a view of the bike as well as the trail but how does the ace look running vertical? Built in wind reduction muffler is wild and crazy no one thought of it before
3:10 Show us how biased you are …. Quickly check also the shadows how much darker insta is …. Hard to take you seriously after that …. But yes I understand, it is your source of income.
They are both set to EV 0, so it's how the camera decided to handle the lighting scenario. That counts for a lot. Did you check out the highlights and shadows through the rest of the trail? The Insta consistently includes better highlight and shadow detail. That's not me being biased, that's just me showing you the situation.
Since you’re a professional and know best than most for sure How’s the 8bit color vs the 10 on the gopro? Does it make a difference at all? Also, on the first clips it looks a bit over sharpened/artificial on the insta Does a low sharpness fix that?
I tried medium sharpness because I knew I wasn’t going to change the footage at all afterwards. Normally I’d always use Low sharpness and I think I still will going forward. As for 8 bit Vs 10, I think it really depends on how the camera processes the footage *and* if the user plans on doing heavy colorgrading afterwards. I’ve been playing around with some grading and so far I’m not seeing the AP2 footage break apart any faster than the Hero 13, so I don’t know if it makes a huge difference in this kind of scenario.

@@TheLoamRanger then it sounds good, I’m still using your recommendation for settings on my hero 8 Now it’s time to upgrade, wanted to avoid GoPro but I wasn’t too convinced by the DJI and the low bitrate and over faking processing videos, was almost defeated and back to GoPro once again up until this video, I feel the Insta would be the best choice for riding
I wish you compared DJI in low light, their camera is much more comparable to Ace Pro 2. We already know gopro sucks in low light. Good job anyway, it was nice to watch (and hear) the differences.
@TheLoamRanger would you say I would be happy if I get the Ace Pro 2 for dusk/night bike dashcam(helmet mounted if matters)? My go pro is not up to it sadly..
Would shooting the GoPro in 8:7 help with low light? Also, I use the 8:7 for capturing mtb & skiing using a chest mount as it is good for RUclips, Instagram & TikTok. Does the Ace Pro 2 export to all platforms well with the 4:3 / 16:9?
All the fuzz on action camera reminds me back in the days when fanboys were either Nikon or Canon.... they are both awesome.... one doesn't destroy the other ... Both are extremely good and for 98.999% of us, a GoPro 9 or DJI Action 3 are still perfectly good...
I use a hero 2018 with the hacked firmware (so equiv to hero 5), and it looks just as good as a hero 9 or 10. There are big improvements in some places, but in non low light environments, I say it's not worth it to upgrade unless you are extremely fast or want a slightly wider pov for some reason. Edit: I do my own color grading and stuff so if you don't want to color grade then a newer camera is probably more worth it
I would love to buy the Ace Pro more than anything. But being incredibly electro sensitised, I can't have wifi or bluetooth all the time. Is there an option to actually switch them off? In fact, at this point I would buy any action cam that has this option. As far as I have been been able to establish all action and 360 cams in the last few years have their wireless antenna on at all times. Particularly annoying for an evergrowing group of people that are becoming sensitised of EMF fields.
Yes, yes, Insta360 sent me this camera but...... Of course you all do this without any instructions from Insta360🤣. I didn't know that even this sentence was part of the instructions... but let's leave that aside. Let's talk about the facts. 8bit blurry as fxxx and a bitrate struggle without end. Details are muddy and look washed out. I was personally disappointed with the Action5, but the AcePro2 is godlessly bad
To be clear, how “blurry” an image is not really linked to whether it’s 8 bit or 10 bit. There are a huge amount of factors involved with something like that (frame rate, shutter speed, how close things are as they go past the lens, etc).
What about timecode...did insta360 finally make a camera with time of day metadata for premiere? Without that it becomes useless for multi cam use. Also, do they offer a water resistant way to charge while in use yet? GoPro does so much more beyond the camera to fit niches... so I have been stuck even though the sensor size is really getting hard to deal with. I also wonder of insta360 has a remote that can control multiple cameras.
I haven’t tested it, but there is a timecode function in the Ace Pro 2 menu 👍 And I believe the GPS preview remote can sync with multiple cameras, so that’s probably worth looking into. I’ll be filming multiple simultaneous angles in an auto racing situation soon myself, so these things are starting to be on my radar as well.
So here's the real question, you going to make the ace pro 2 your primary camera?? Going to drop the X4?? You didn't say.. Do you prefer the Ace Pro 2 or the DJI Osmo 5??? When you reviewed the One RS, we never saw it much after.. Will this be the same??
Yup, the Ace Pro 2 will be my primary camera when I don't need 360 shots. So likely 70% of the time. The field of view is wide enough for pretty much all my filming scenarios now. I have zero experience with the Osmo 5 other than some clips here and there. From what I've seen, the audio on the Osmo is by far the worst out of the three of them, so that would likely rule it out for me. As for the One RS, I've always billed that camera as a great choice for 'normal' filmers out there capturing their life, who want some format options available to them while doing so. Once the X3 came out, that massively overshadowed the One RS from that point onwards, IMO.
@@TheLoamRanger looks like I'll have to redirect the one rs pair to be used by others and maybe consider getting an X3 for 360 work. Insta360 could/would never get a straight answer to me on whether they would add the single lens feature to the One Rs like the X3. Gets very grainy when trying to use the One RS on the trails even though it's great for shoot and forget video gathering... We're still using the action 3 because it just works in all the +40° & - 20° & in between conditions we ride in with no appreciable loss in battery life and the DJI Mics plug right in. They add so much value. Do you know if this Ace pro 2 works with the 2 versions of DJI Mics?? With all that said, I'm looking for something to move to but it has to be a step up. Not slightly better but BETTER. Low light doesn't matter enough to count as a required feature either. Thanx for the intro, Thanx for responding quickly. Appreciate it.. Stress less, ride more.
Noob to action cameras, looking to pick one up so I'm doing the reseach. I enjoyed your comparison of these two DESPITE a couple of the naysayer comments below.
Unfortunately the Insta360 shows some terrible fringes around objects as it oversharpenes on the medium sharpness setting. What does it look like on the low setting and is there even a lower option (zero / off)?
Working with pre-release cameras is tricky. Insta360 updated the beta firmware *one day* after I finished filming, which addressed the fringing. With tight timelines though, I just couldn't get out to reshoot! But ya, "Low" sharpness is the better choice. At the moment, there is no "Off" setting for sharpness.
Not gonna lie, GoPro has been lagging behind in an increasing number of areas over the last couple of years, gimmicky convenience with the mounts fo example, the temp sensor on the DJI, low light performance, and overall processing and response speed; but for my case use (MTB videos mostly) the image quality and stabilization in daylight (which is when I ride and film) are still the best on the GoPro. I will hold on to my Hero 10 until next year to see if GoPro makes another leap and updates its processor and sensor. If they don't, maybe by then one of the other two will have found the secret sauce for image quality.
There is a certain feel to the Insta360 that is just jarring to me. I find it uncomfortable to watch. The GoPro clips feel like I am on the ride with you, the Ace feels like a sorta glitchy video game.
What is everyone doing about anyone other than GoPro having a cheap online storage option? why arent others doing that? every other option is much more than 50 bucks a year.
I was actually pretty disappointed to find the go pro put the heat guard there and does make it way harder to put the wind mic on it, insta made it look so good and seamless.
Ya that was an interesting choice. I still can’t believe Insta’s wind function works so incredibly well. I’ve been trained to be automatically disappointed over the last decade I guess haha. It’s the first time I’ve never had to touch the EQ on an action cam audio track either.
For my personal taste the ace pro it's not that nice. to much color, contrast, sharpness, so much processing it looks like a bad hdr video. Audio top for a action camera. they all should just draw the line and go back to the drawing board :)
Insta could have not made a better commercial themselves. For a balance viewpoint see DC Rainmakers review. I used to love your videos. The latest commercials not so much.
Definitely go watch DC Rainmakers vid! He does a great job. His footage reflects the same things you see in my vid. Again, I just showed you the side by side footage. So you can decide what *you* like better. If you feel uncomfortable with how much better the Ace Pro 2 did, that’s a you thing, not a me thing.
GoPro has lost the market, I’ve used every model up to the 12 but DJI and insta have moved the needle and GoPro needs to step up or be the new Polaroid

@@TheLoamRanger but what is that weird glow around the mountains?
Insta are selling it $100 above conversion rate in Aus. It’s a no brainier I’ll be getting GoPro
get dji action 4 or 5 instead, gopro isnt very good, also dji is less expensive
You mentioned that this was the first camera ever to address the noise issue but GoPro has had their media mod for a while and cleans up sound pretty good. It would be nice if it wasn’t an extra item you had to buy but at the 360’s price point I think you still money on a GoPro setup.
Media mod audio is excellent and eliminates almost all wind noise , problem is over time taking the mod on/off the camera eventually wears out the port on the camera so it cant read the media mod and defaults back to the camera mics, lasted less than a year on my Hero 12.
@@PNWEnduro coming up on 9 months with mine. So far so good. I appreciate the response.
The media mod includes a shotgun-style mic that is *very* directional. Not great for recording ride audio, IMO.
I highly recommend the Fortnine review, too. Impressive tech/AI.
I would love to see you try the action 5 pro. The ace 2 looks awesome though. No doubt.
Knew it was you, Loam Wolf on that Insta360 launch live! Followed you for a couple of years now due to my interest in eMTBs and glad you chose the AcePro2!
The GoPro low light footage looks like it came from an action movie scene (motion blur and darker) while the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 looks like it comes from a family TV series (brighter and more detail).
your pedal caught my eye
We don’t talk about those 🤫
the one thing that almost makes me consider the low light performance not a win for the 360 is the colors look a lot more dull in the low light compared to the gopro, aside from that the audio quality on the ace pro 2 is so good, might pick one up just because of that
Would love to see a night ride.
Ive got it on test as well, epic camera.... goodbye gopro....
This is a fantastic review. The comparisons side by side and unbiased view points is well structured. Yes you have a partnership with Insta360 but you have in the past said when they fall short and others were better.
Great video
Unbiased? :))))))))))))
Great video! Useful, too, because I'm planning on doing a long bikepacking trip in 2025 where I video the entire thing. !!!
$570... Ouch
@@TheLoamRanger it looks like you had noise reduction set to auto on the gopro and on with the insta?
First of all thanks for comparison
Second what are the bit rates on the ace pro 2?
4k30?
8K30?
Cheers
🍻
great review, well done. stinks to see GoPro lag behind...I've been a customer and rooting for them since their first camera
I started to watch the video and as soon as he said "I work with Insta 360" I stopped. We know the outcome of the video at that point. I'll watch an unsponsored unbiased review instead.
Good luck, I'm still trying to find a video on this camera that is not sponsored by Insta360.
Check out DC Rainmakers video for an unsponsored review and comparison. For mine, I don’t want any untrue or unfair comparisons to be made, which is why I simply showed the direct, side-by-side comparisons, with all settings clearly shown. Hope that helps!
Make the same comparison with DJI A5P, please.
Hi.
What kind of chest mount accessories do you have? It looks great like a motocross breast plate.
I like how you didn't test against the A5P, because you know it's as good and cheaper
The only aspect of that camera that I’ve seen is how the audio is by far the worst out of the three, so that’s an instant fail for me. But you can think whatever you want 😄
@@TheLoamRanger who uses onboard audio?
Pretty much… everyone?
@@TheLoamRanger no one does. Thats why all cameras have offboard audio connectivity...
@@KentRoads I have an older GoPro hero 9 which (I think) lacks external audio connectivity. Can you recommend an aftermarket audio setup? I would love to keep the camera in a waterproof case.
Super informative vid thank you
That AI-powered PureVideo tho... always stuggled with low light on my action cams. Creative juices are flowing.just wow🫰🫰.
Great job man!
compare it to the new DJI camera. If I was replacing my 11 black it would be between those two.
Since you’re a professional and know best than most for sure
How’s the 8bit color vs the 10 on the gopro? Does it make a difference at all?
Also, on the first clips it looks a bit over sharpened/artificial on the insta
Does a low sharpness fix that?
I tried medium sharpness because I knew I wasn’t going to change the footage at all afterwards. Normally I’d always use Low sharpness and I think I still will going forward.
As for 8 bit Vs 10, I think it really depends on how the camera processes the footage *and* if the user plans on doing heavy colorgrading afterwards. I’ve been playing around with some grading and so far I’m not seeing the AP2 footage break apart any faster than the Hero 13, so I don’t know if it makes a huge difference in this kind of scenario.

@@TheLoamRanger then it sounds good, I’m still using your recommendation for settings on my hero 8
Now it’s time to upgrade, wanted to avoid GoPro but I wasn’t too convinced by the DJI and the low bitrate and over faking processing videos, was almost defeated and back to GoPro once again up until this video, I feel the Insta would be the best choice for riding
I wish you compared DJI in low light, their camera is much more comparable to Ace Pro 2. We already know gopro sucks in low light.
Good job anyway, it was nice to watch (and hear) the differences.
RIP Gopro (and I always used Gopro until this year)
@TheLoamRanger would you say I would be happy if I get the Ace Pro 2 for dusk/night bike dashcam(helmet mounted if matters)?
My go pro is not up to it sadly..
That’s one of the main strengths of the AP2, so definitely. 👍
@TheLoamRanger cheers
Are you still color grading your footage like you use to do back in the day? Just curious if you still have to do that or not
Hm….ok so what settings was your insta? Mine is so shaky….. 4k 60fps and normal stabilisation. Does it need to be on more than that stabilisation?
A hmu windslayer is expensive? You can get way better sound out of the GoPro
DCRainmaker review covers that. Also will be comparing all three current action cams soon it sounds like
@@davet9633 it's out now on his channel
Can you make a video on the normal insta360 Ace please
Same, at the same time I’m also disappointed by GoPro
I still feel my hero 8 is super close to the 13 not much changed
To be clear, how “blurry” an image is not really linked to whether it’s 8 bit or 10 bit. There are a huge amount of factors involved with something like that (frame rate, shutter speed, how close things are as they go past the lens, etc).
Looks great and sound good too, but it's the size of a brick! This was made for bloggers...
Is it me, or does the Ace pro 2 has a more realistic view on the steepness of mtb trails?
Great video thank you 🙏🏼
Hope they packed 10-bit log into AP 2.
Man I love gopro so much but they can't keep up with my needs anymore so I guess I got to get a insta360 now :(
Does Ace Pro 2 have the ability to go Live with video?
>Records in 4K 60fps
>Uploads 4K 30fps
Just, why?
I was expecting "By not being shiet on cold weather" 😂
Well, we just got 20cm of snow last night, so it’s time to find out! Haha
Noob to action cameras, looking to pick one up so I'm doing the reseach. I enjoyed your comparison of these two DESPITE a couple of the naysayer comments below.
Doesn’t destroy on price. $100 OVER conversion rate in Aus. Makes sense to get the alternative now.
Dude, what Chest mount do you use to get so decent quality ?
That's the big old Camelbak sternum protector/action cam mount. Not very comfortable, but for situations like these, the extra stability is great.
There is a certain feel to the Insta360 that is just jarring to me. I find it uncomfortable to watch. The GoPro clips feel like I am on the ride with you, the Ace feels like a sorta glitchy video game.
Does AP2 have 360 horizon lock in 4k like the gopro 11?
What is everyone doing about anyone other than GoPro having a cheap online storage option? why arent others doing that? every other option is much more than 50 bucks a year.
Is the lens protector replaceable if it’s damaged?
It is! Thankfully
any idea when we will be seeing an insta360 x5?
This may, the change I waited for to switch…. Great comparison. I dunno what to do. 😅
@@TheLoamRanger are you going to be making more videos on the Ace?
I’ll definitely be making more vids *with* the Ace Pro 2, but probably not one specifically about it.
Looking the mountains. 360 low resolution
How fast the snow melted today 😂😂😂
Boy am I glad the snow held off *just* long enough to film this video haha
For my personal taste the ace pro it's not that nice. to much color, contrast, sharpness, so much processing it looks like a bad hdr video. Audio top for a action camera. they all should just draw the line and go back to the drawing board :)
Ace Pro 2 10 bit supported ?
Compare with action 5
Keep in mind all this is in low light
GoPro days are long over. The real competition is between DJI and Insta360.
U shud have done comparison with ace pro 1😂if they improved it let them not embargo you into not comparing and do this before they release a crippling firmware for ace pro 1 😂
Good review
Not for GoPro 😂
Honestly, I like the way the 13 Black looks more.
