I’m 66 years old and have gone to the gym for about the past 30 years. I felt like I had been neglecting my cardio work so three months ago I begin walking up the 22 floors of my building each day. In the beginning it took me about 5 1/2 minutes and now I’ve got it down to about three minutes and 50 seconds. I wear a cardiac monitor while I’m doing the walking and my heart rate usually gets up to around 155 bpm which I feel is a pretty good workout for my age. I realize I’m not a typical 66 year old but I can tell you with 100% certainty that you’re never too old to improve your health.
Stairs have been a bear for me (69 years old with arthritic knees). Since I learned from your videos to place whole foot on stair and to push through the heel, they have been so much easier. I'm not fast going up stairs, but I am sure. How about coming down stairs? That is my biggest challenge now.
My advice is to start off going as far as you can. I’d expect that over time, as you get stronger, you’ll be able to get deeper! Many people with severe arthritis can achieve much more than they thought or have been told! Keep it up!
Pete, actually that is a misconception that was spread by healthcare professionals that did not understand the research. If you have arthritis, you may want to modify the way you are doing exercise but you definitely should not avoid it!
