BRILLIANT! These are the two biggest issues I have, getting up from a chair and crawling up the stairs! I will try these exercises and pray for improvement! THANK YOU VERY MUCH WILL!! I'm a FAIL and cannot do these exercises. cannot lift my legs like that, cannot drop a hip and just too weak. Sadly, I will continue crawling up my stairs to get to the loo.

I find the exercises you shared wonderful - have been doing them for 2days now😊. Really works! Bless you! My arms might need some bone strengthening excercises too if you have time to share some please. I am turning 80 in July❤Best regards, keep up your good work please!😊

Again, Mr Harlow, you are no. 1 for even those above 65. The "sit to stand" got me movin. That exercise also calls for patience, and you know why ! - slowing down to sit is not easy. I like the exercise to strengthen the glute just before that - so dooable with minimum equipment.

Have you considered doing a short video of an exercise routine we can do with you? I’d like to see a routine for people with osteoarthritis for example. In Australia, physiotherapists have started running exercise classes as part of patient treatment before joint replacement. We have so little input from the system in the NHS.🙏

Hi there - thank you for your comment - I started my career working in the NHS and saw how necessary preventative work is to help keep people healthy and safe. I began as a sciatica specialist, but over the years I have been able to develop my work to help support a huge array of issues which are typically faced by older individuals. I have found that lots of people feel unsupported and unsure where to begin when looking to protect themselves or looking to recover following injuries/surgery. Ageing is a natural process which we all face and I wanted to work in an area where I could offer a real benefit to my clients!

@@HT-Physio Thank you for your thoughtful reply. My parents taught me, and when I married and had children I taught them that if you help even one individual to lead a fuller and happier life, that is a truly worthwhile endeavor. You help so many address and correct problems that develop as we age ( and which many like myself were not expecting) that I sincerely hope you recognize that each of your videos is an extremely worthwhile endeavor that helps so many individuals regain our fullest happy life. Well done you👏🏾

I really love these exercises as you can really feel the legs and knees getting stronger. Just wish I knew why my outer hip hurt when bending my left leg up stairs. There is clearly an issue somewhere as i can feel my groin, glutes and hip sore when I do other exercises like glute exercises side hip exercises etc. .I am hoping everything will get stronger over time.

These exercises are good if they are done before problems arise, when you are younger. If I could get up and sit down from a chair as in exercise 5 I wouldn't be needing this! PLEASE try and imagine what it's like for us with minimal, almost or no cartilege. THANKS!

I had terrible knees at 50 years old . Waiting at a station I would find it very hard to get up from a seat. I was going to have operations on the knees but read that they always end up with a knee replacement get it checked out with a good physio therapist. Find a soft surface and kneel down with your bum on your heels . If you can’t go all the way place a pillow between . Sit there for a minute . Also raise yourself up to upright kneel and back down 10 times . What it does is pump the Synovial fluid around the knee cartridge. Don’t go hard on yourself just slowly push it. The next exercise is door handle squats onto a low stool.

Hi Will, this is a brilliant video on how to climb and come down stairs. I had total knee replacement surgery 5 months ago and find coming down the stairs especially very painful and unstable in the operated knee. I only discovered your video a few days ago and I have been doing your exercises since and I am finding a big improvement already.
You are by far the best physiotherapist I have worked with . You have a deep understanding of your subject and you are a brilliant communicator. You explain the fundamental causes of the problem and then prescribe and demonstrate the best and most effective exercises to address the issue, and very importantly also, you explain in very simple terms how exactly your exercises work and how they will fix the problem. No other physiotherapist I have attended has that very rare skill. Also, your videos are very clear and visually detailed and precise for each phase of the exercise. I have subscribed to your channel and I will buy your book. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise with your many followers.

Just found your channel and your presentation is excellent. I am hoping you may be able to give me some advise to improve my hip flexors because I have a neurological condition and I am giving your hip hinge exercises a try but because I have severe issues with lifting my feet/legs (one more so than the other) I am finding this extremely difficult. I realise my hip flexors and my glutes are not strong. I have severe issues with walking generally and cannot go very far and I have that leg turning inwards that you mentioned, I believe it is sometimes referred to as knee kissing because one or both knees come together)
Feel I need specific exercises to strengthen both my hip flexors and glutes before I can manage the stair walking exercises properly. However. I will keep trying. I am determined, despite this neurological condition and I have also had several compression fraction in my vertebrae in the past (chronic pain thoracic/lumber) will not be able to do the exercise on one of your videos using the roller. Any assistance, exercises etc would be greatly appreciated. In the meantime I will continue practicing with the stair walking exercises. Maybe these are the exercises to strengthen my hip flexors and glutes??

Will, I am a stroke survivor. I believe that these exercises for ascending and descending stairs can help stroke survivors to strengthen their leg muscles enough in their weak leg to gain a normalized gait again. Also your video of sitting and standing without using one’s hands has the same effects, especially as to the eccentric stretching portion of the exercises. The eccentric portion of the exercises, I believe is what releases the contractration of a stroke survivor’s leg muscles. To do exercises that are concentric flexing muscles makes it worse for the contracted muscles in stroke survivors.

The speed of conducting the exercise is the most critical part. Even in Yogasana. Surya Namaskar appears to be so easy to do. However if one was to take like 12 minutes to complete one cycle of 16 steps then you would learn how difficult AND how VERY useful it is. Stretch 5 repetitions over 1 hour at a constant speed and you got it made.

One summer long ago, I had some free time and was helping my son study for the LSAT. We used the university library, which has lots and lots of stairs. I needed to move for ten minutes every hour or I’d begin to fall asleep, so I used the stairs to go up and down, up and up and down and down, non-stop, for those ten minutes. I’m easily bored, so I soon added taking the stairs two at a time. OMG! While I had gotten better at stairs with the up-and-down, it was when I added the two-at-a-time that my progress ZOOMED upward! I got so much stronger so fast!
This is a great series of exercises, and I’d recommend adding double step-ups when you get to where you need an increase in your progress. Mind blowing! I still do it.
