    Fun Fact: Jimmy Negatron wasn't just some made up schmuck for this sequel, he was actually planned to appear in the TV series but then Evil Jimmy was created thus rendering the character pointless.

      So I initially through that negatron was like, the antimatter equivalent of a proton or neutron, since anti-electrons are called positrons. And having the evil version of him be named after the antimatter equivalent of a neutron would be thematically appropriate. But apparently negatron is just an outdated name for a normal electron, which is more in line with your idea.

I wish it wasn't so terrible". My younger self wasn't always the best when it came to their gaming tastes but they were spot-on in regards to that one.

      We got extremely ripped off, because in European exclusive regions, there is yet another gba 3d platformer, also based on a kids cartoon, called Asterix and Obelix XXL, which not only looks stunning, but plays exactly like the PS2 game it is a port of. It’s straight up a solid 3d platformer with puzzle elements, made on a GBA.
      And of course, because we in the US got hosed, we never got that one, lol.
      For another 3d game we did at least get though, Driv3r on GBA is also amazing and arguably the best version of it, it’s incredible that they actually managed to recreate a gta style game like that

    The diagonal jump thing is a pretty common issue with movement in games. It's why diagonal running in old FPS games was faster, too. If your character moves 1 unit per second on the X and Y axis, then combined they'll move ~1.41 u/s diagonally if they don't handle it right.

    The flicker can be found in a handful of other GBA games too. Camelot's Golden Sun 1 and 2 use it on the world map, same with certain areas in Mario Golf/Tennis. The game will rapidly swap between the current and previous frames. The old GBA LCD screen had a lot of motion blur and ghosting that masked the flicker somewhat (though as you mentioned, it didn't hide it perfectly, especially on newer backlit models). The blur would also sort of blend the two frames together to create an illusion of higher resolution. In the case of the Camelot games and Jimmy Neutron, the rotation/scaling effect appears less blocky and jagged. Pseudo anti-aliasing of sorts.
    This was also used in a different way on the NES Classics series of NES ports to GBA. The GBA's screen was significantly lower res than the NES (GBA is 240x160 and NES was 256x224). This meant that a bunch of lines of pixels would have to be cut. But using flickering, they could rapidly turn entire rows of pixels on and off in alternating patterns. Again, the LCD motion blur somewhat masked the flicker and helped merge the rows of pixels together. The result was a somewhat vertically stretched image, but without really losing any rows of pixels.
    I believe the Gamecube's GBA Player accessory had a blur effect that could be toggled on or off to simulate this quirk of old LCD displays in the games that relied on it. GBA VC on both 3DS and Wii U also include this setting (and doesn't have an official way to turn it off sadly). Most unofficial GBA emulators also have options or filters to simulate LCD ghosting as well (VisualBoyAdvance and mGBA call it Interframe Blending).

    23:00 is a classic game development mistake.
    See, what they're doing is getting horizontal input and vertical input (both go from -1 to 1) and putting them into a vector2, then moving Jimmy by that value. Except the problem is that Vector2(1,1) (diagonal) has a magnitude of 1.41, while Vector2(1,0) (pure horizontal or vertical) has a magnitude of 1. meaning you go 41% faster diagonally.
    The way to fix that issue is to NORMALIZE the input vector, so that no matter the direction, it is remapped to a magnitude of 1.

    • @stevethepocket
      @stevethepocket 2 года назад

      OK but then why is this "mistake" the only way to successfully make that jump? If he's supposed to move at normal speed no matter what direction, that means it shouldn't be possible at all.

    • @Sagaan42
      @Sagaan42 2 года назад

      @@stevethepocket oh I'm not saying they're unaware of it. They probably coded the movement, played around with it, found that you moved faster diagonally, didn't care to fix it, and then bad level designers (if there were any professional level designers at all) decided it was a good idea to require using that movement in the level.
      You'll find that maaaany games, especially indie games coded by amateurs, have this exact same problem, and many devs don't even realize it exists when play testing it but end up unconsciously working it into their levels.

    Hi, Nitro Rad. Thanks for another great video. I didn't see anyone else bring it up, so I thought I'd try and explain why jumping diagonally made you go farther in the GBA version. The most likely explanation is that they didn't normalize whatever vector they're using for the movement and/or jumping. Long story short, with how vectors math works, when you move diagonally, you'll end up moving faster, which is why you want to normalize it so you don't move faster diagonally.
    As a result, depending on how mean you want to be, they did what could be considered a rookie mistake in game programming.

    I’m genuinely astounded anyone is talking about this game. I thought it was like, one of those games that time forgot. When I was a kid I didn’t get to see my cousins a lot because they lived, like, an hour or two away. Once a year, they would come and stay at my grandmother's house for a week or so. Every year, we would always play this game. It was like some kind of weird tradition. We would huddle around my grandfather's computer and take turns playing it. He has this big rolltop desk which is covered in papers and pens and other miscellaneous things. He was a mechanic before he retired, so it was always covered in these bizarre trinkets and tools. The monitor was always at the very back, so there was space for tons of stuff in front of it. There was this CD case full of games, and this was one of them. Some were legit games like this, Pajama Sam, Battle for Bikini Bottom, etc. Others were edutainment games that were barely even games. The one thing they all had in common was that I had no idea where they came from. They were always there. I can’t remember a time that they weren't. I certainly don't remember buying any of them. But the one we played every year was Jimmy Neutron vs Jimmy Negatron. Every year we would make it a little further. But by the time the next year rolled around we would have forgotten almost everything. Even once we finally beat it, we would just play it again next year. I remember the level where you would clear out the mummies terrified me. The weird music would suddenly kick in and fill me with this weird sense of terror and dread. I remember the sub levels were always my favorite. I would just ignore the objective most of the time and explore. I also did that with the Retroville time travel levels. I loved all the different vehicles. Now that I think about it, none of us even really watched Jimmy Neutron, so I don't know why we gravitated so heavily to this game. I live in Pennsylvania, and my cousins had to move to Georgia a few years back. I haven't seen them since then because it's so much farther away. I will always treasure my memories with them. I would always look forward to that week or two every year. And I only really played it when they were here. Never on my own. Not too long ago, I saw the GBA version in a local game shop. I was astounded when I finally played it. I was expecting something like Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge. Like, an overhead platformer or something. Like a 2D isometric de-make of the PC game. This might be a bit controversial, but I think it might have some of the most impressive graphics on the GBA. If you showed me this and asked me what console it was for, I probably would have said it looks like a really bad DS game. Most “3D” platformers on the GBA use an isometric or overhead angle. I think this is really impressive. This game will forever hold a special place in my heart, and I was always a little bummed that no one ever really talked about it. I know it's really nothing special, especially when compared to other games, but I’m really glad to see that this game isn’t truly forgotten.
    Edit, July 29th, 2022: My grandmother is about to pass away, so my cousins came up again. Today was their last day here, and we ended the day playing through this game. It only took 2 hours, but all three of us thoroughly enjoyed it. Even though we are all technically adults now. I wish we had gotten together under better circumstances, but I'm happy I got to see them again, and I'm glad we had this experience. Just going through the game and all our memories together. All the stuff we loved and hated. Parts we got stuck on. Parts that terrified us. And we beat it in two hours. A game that at one point we couldn't beat with more than a week to do it. This game will always be special to me.

  • @Starpotion

    I played the PC version as a kid and the one thing that stood out to me is how surprisingly immersive it was for what seemed to be a quick and dirty licensed sequel. There are tons of little touches that don't really add to the core gameplay or progression, but just exist to insert character into the world like that lander minigame or being able to enter the bathrooms in the pyramid level. I remember that warehouse level having an entire boat off to the side that you could explore, despite it being completely optional and having nothing to do with the level objective. Even the actual submarine level I was surprised with just how big it was, having way more setpieces and areas you could explore that were completely off the main path to the objective.

    If you remember back when the Jimmy Neutron movie came out, there was supposed to be a sequel called, “Jimmy Neutron 2: The Search for Carl.” That movie never came out, because Nickelodeon wanted to focus on putting Rugrats Go Wild in theaters instead of Jimmy Neutron 2. However, the plot of the cancelled movie was used for the level in the GBA Jimmy Negatron game where you save Carl on a jelly planet.
    Given that this game was meant to be a direct sequel to the movie game, I am leading on to believe that Jimmy Neutron vs. Jimmy Negatron is the real, unofficial sequel to the Jimmy Neutron movie. It uses the original rocket design, the original logo, the same game engine and physics as the first movie PC game, and even the plot of the cancelled Search for Carl movie. It’s not official, but it’s what I’m thinking about.

    The flickering in the GBA game is actually a trick done by developers knowing that the gba's screen had a lot of ghosting. The flickering background would create a sort of "antialiasing" effect by making it appear smoother and objects flickering in and out of existence are meant to look semi transparent

    13:20 ok so in sonic advance 3 the water has this same flicker going on. The GBA used an lcd screen and each frame is burnt into the screen for a little bit, so that flicker was used to create a transparent effect by blending the frames together. I think it’s doing something similar here, but instead of a transparency effect it’s probably a blur or something to make the background look less pixelated. Doesn’t exactly work as intended on modern displays.

    You see, the flickering is indicative that you forgot a few steps while setting up your capture. The main thing is that you probably forgot to sacrifice your first born child to the eldritch Nintendo gods. But, that's a step that is easy to forget so I wouldn't feel too bad about it if I were you.
    Oh, and if you forgot to have a child before you started to record the game, that's ok. If you want similar performance quickly, you could use a cousin, neighbor, aunt, uncle, parent, sibling, etc. The main thing is that the Nintendo gods demand a blood sacrifice before the recording of many of their games. And, it appears like this is one such game.
    Anyway, I hope that this advice helps, and that you have a wonderful rest of your day.
