Funny that this video was made 14 years ago when I saw it. I bought my 55-02 in 2022, the same year it was made. I had been shopping for a bass to complete my arsenal and had been having trouble for months making the decision. When I was finally shown the 55-02, I played a few notes and said “Oh my gosh, this is it!” The sound and the feel sold me instantly. FYI I bought it at C&M Music in Lafayette Louisiana.
I can notice the differences between those basses and the Lakland, but I have a 55-02 and I love it, I would say that no one could notice the diference in a live show or a record
The best setting is to simply play the full MM/J setup with flat EQ. Sure Lakland can emulate the other basses, but it can also surpass them all with it's own sound :)
Pretty convincing demonstration to be fair. The Lakland has a great tone and range of sounds! Another bass worth considering for covering these types of sounds is the G&L L2000 - wonderful bass also!
all the basses sound great, as they should. My personal fav is the jazz bass which has been my go-to bass for just about everything i do. The lakland for the most part gets close to just about all 3. If you need all 3 distinct sounds lakland is the way to go without carrying around 3 basses and you still get that lakland sound as well.
I had to listen again with quality headphones on; I think That particular Lakland does a Damned good job of getting the tones of all 3 of those Basses IMHO. I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger on a 55-02 if I knew for certain I could cop those same tones from it. Great Job my friend.
Another thing to remember is that the Lakland is brand spanking new, it has not been 'broken in' yet. The Jazz, P Bass and Stingray all look about 20+ years old, and their tone has has evolved over this time with the woods and electronics 'maturing'. I'd reckon after a few years the tone on the Lakland would be mean! Only one way to find out... I'm gettin' one!
Wow, the Lakland comped the Jazz bass tone FAR better than I ever would have thought! (I haven't gotten the chance to really try out either their USA or Skyline models). Less so with the Precision, but more than enough to get by on a "one bass" gig. It's 'Ray tone is somewhere in the middle, but I've found them to be very "finicky" - even StingRays that have aftermarket pickups installed lose something elusive yet essential to their tone. I'll have to seriously give a Skyline consideration...
Eventh0rizon has is spot on. They are great basses just classed as Laklands. My decade skyline active kicks ass and sounds thunderous. But it's as unique as the fender jazz, P & stingray is, and just as amazing.... And half the price
Cool! I've been looking at Laklands for a while now. Might have just convinced me to buy one. The P bass and J bass tones were pretty close, but I felt that the Stingray tone was thicker than the Lakland's bridge pickup... Either way, maybe replace the bridge pickup or throw in some more bottom and see what it does if you really wanted to fix that. I'm still impressed with this thing either way. 5* for your playing too.
The goal is not to copy the sound exactly, but to have a versatile bass usable for different styles (instead of using 3 different basses on stage). The sound can go in the direction of these three originals, but it can't replace them for shure. Cheers
This is a great vid and very educational as to why each iconic bass that Leo built had a very distinctive voice and inspired genres of music. Much kudos to Lakland or inventing a bass that covers a great deal of ground sonically and yet with subtle embellishments in mid range tone. I myself think the pre EB ray just has a tone nobody can match it just cuts through in a mix and the lower register is just unmatched.
I have a 44-02, deluxe I'm pretty sure cause it's got the pickguard, and sounds amazing with the Bartolini's. I actually have been doing the 3 bass combination for a while. Something I love is the neck side of the bridge pickup. That's nice.
I have a Lakland 5502 Skyline Deluxe from 2002 with Bartolini. It sounds great! You can get a tons of tones out of it, and the neck is a dream! It is so thin, and really easy to play! I have had a Lakland 5502 Standard with LH, but didn't really notice any difference in sound... only in neck, because the 5502 standard from 2008 had a thicker, heavier neck. I don't know if it is a difference btw Standard/Deluxe models or Bartolini/LH models... But what is sure I like the Bartolini tone more! :)
Can anyone explain what settings are being used for each of the comparisons? That would be really, really useful. I must say, between the P-bass and J-bass, the sounds are almost indistinguishable. However, the Musicman sound definitely sounds a little thinner on the Lakland. Still, I have a 44-02 Deluxe and it still remains without doubt the greatest thing I've ever bought; a really amazing instrument.
Fantastic! This has to be one of the best sound demos I've ever seen! Could you please tell us what the settings on the Lakland were for each sample? Active or passive, pickup blend, bridge pickup coil selection, and EQ settings? Please? 😎 Thanks!!!
Most likely active. The MM tone is the blend all the way to the bridge PU and with the pickup coil switch in the middle. The jazz tone is with the blend on 12:00 o clock (so in the middle) with the coil switched to the right, so on the back coil of the humbucker. P tone is blend all the way to the neck.
It pretty much nailed all the sounds... except the ray slap tone. Im sorry but that sound just cant be duplicated. Lakland basses are great though too!
I think lakland sounds really similar to the jazz bass, but it is very "middy" in comparison with the the P-bass and a little thinner than the Stingray. However, I love this Lakland bass
For the doubters out there...get yourselves a hold of a Lakland and play it at high volume at a gig. I have owned good examples of all the basses on show in this video...my Lakland blows them all away in the live environment - including my vintage Stingray & Precision.
Good video. The Lakland definitely holds its own, although the Pbass and Stingray definitely can not be replicated. A stingray is a stingray, and you'll never get the Pbass thump out of a Jazz Pickup. Very good sounding bass regardless.
I've had all of these sans the Lakland. Have sold them all due to my G&L L-2000 USA fretted and fretless. None of them touch the G&L's attack and nastiness. I'm negotiating a purchase of a 44-02 right now, and if I get it I will due a video comparo of the two.
From this video the bass does seem versatile but it's noticeable that it's got a little more mid-range than the other basses. It didn't sound as full than the others though, which could be a set-back for some players i guess.
Overall a pretty good imitation of all 3 " classic " basses. But nothing can come close to the feel and sound of an early 60's J or P Bass. I'll have the single coil hum any day. Mind you...the Lakland " Joe Osborn " bass is fantastic !
The new pickup/electronics combo sounds fantastic, although this proves that I'm much more about the Jazz bass tone (with sounds great in the old-school Antigua Fender) for my personal style than a P or StingRay, although I'd certainly use them if that's the sound a client desired. ...now if only LakLand made a 5-string DJ bass with tighter string-spacing, I'd be *all* over that! :-(
I would agree this vid doesn't do the lakland much justice. Go see a band that uses one live (death cab, wilco, etc) and it's quite different, perhaps due to model too...One curious question is also what all of you are listening to this video on.
I love this video and the sounds you get on every situation. I may be wrong, but it sound to me that you use a little bit of eq on every comparison to get even closer to the reference sound. Can you get us any tips on that?
I really think the Jazz Bass and Stingray tone sound best for obvius reasons (pup Configuration) but the stingray tone is lacking some low end...i geuss you can dial that in trough preamp so i guess it can pretty much do everything EXCEPT a P-Bass...Those basses might be the simpliest out there but the hardest to imitate through other pup configurations...
alot of people are saying theses basses are the new fender. there great playing and sounding and they can pretty much fool u into thinking that they are fenders. but im not a fan of active electronics
Overall, I really like that Lakland. ej2eugene said it best though, each of those old basses has their own amazing vibe to it that can't be imitated through this Lakland. The Lakland gets 95% there, but that's as good as any bass other than an original Fender or Music Man will get.
They sound very close but the Lakland to me sounds more "flawless" and sterile due to its active electronics. I much prefer the tone of all 3 passive basses.
Great comparison video!! I REALLY would LOVE to get Lakland. Do you think that a 55-02 would sound as good or not AS good as the Lakland used in this comparison video? Thanks.
I got a 55-02, and I can assure you the tone difference is next to none. Difference between the two is mostly in feel. You will not be dissappointed. Just like in this video I can get pretty much all 3 tones very convincingly.
People are too partial, which is normal. In a blind tes I'll bet Lakland does them all exactly in tone. Be open minded, be true! :-) Laklnad is an exceptional bass! period.
Not sure if this has been covered, but can you, or someone, post the (approximate) preamp settings that delivered these tones? Sounds great btw. Thanks!
Lakland are great Basses they come close to the tones but not quite there, especially the Musicman it had a richness full sound the Lakland sounded middy, close tho
Lakland are great basses, period .I had them all..Stingrays are great but are toomuch in your face, jazz basses are everyones perrenial favorites.lakland are great contenders!
It's Ian Martin Allison!!!
Indeed. 🎉

My 55-02 deluxe is being delivered on Thursday. I'm so excited. I had a 55-01 some years ago. I'm glad to be getting another Lakland.
@@randombassplayer_07 yes !
I can notice the differences between those basses and the Lakland, but I have a 55-02 and I love it, I would say that no one could notice the diference in a live show or a record

I have found this to be the best setting myself on the 55-02
my favorite setting of the 55-02 is the front coil of the HH and the neck PU, great sound.
Pretty convincing demonstration to be fair. The Lakland has a great tone and range of sounds!
Another bass worth considering for covering these types of sounds is the G&L L2000 - wonderful bass also!
This guy is a great player.

The Stingray's slap tone is incredible - and the Lakland sounds great. Wish I could afford all 4 basses...

I wonder if that little groove he plays at the end is the 'Lakland' sound. I liked it!
WHAT!? Did not expect to see Ian Martin Allison here on a 14 year-old video! Hah! Awesome!
Just thinking the same thing lol
My first internet appearance 😂
JEDI BASSSSSS THE LEGEND HIMSELF
Wow that must be the guy that records all those Lakland clips on the official site! :D
plus, with both pickups at full this bass has an own voice, pretty modern and very punchy, great bass for sure.
I agree with you, the jazz bass had a totally awesome sound !
Thanks for uploading this video ! I saw it a while ago, but it was down until now. Great demo !
Wow, the Lakland comped the Jazz bass tone FAR better than I ever would have thought! (I haven't gotten the chance to really try out either their USA or Skyline models). That's a hell of a good commercial for lakland, I gotta go try out everything!

I really like Lakland, but at least in this video, the Fenders have a richness that is missing from the Lakland.
I think you’ve got it backwards.
Agree, smth is missing in the bottom with the Lakland
The goal is not to copy the sound exactly, but to have a versatile bass usable for different styles (instead of using 3 different basses on stage). The sound can go in the direction of these three originals, but it can't replace them for shure.
Cheers
Amazing! I want a Lakland now!
I would kill for that stingray!!! You play great!
I personally think it Nails all of the tones, in a blindfold test you couldn't tell that it wasn't a stingray unless someone told you.
This is a great vid and very educational as to why each iconic bass that Leo built had a very distinctive voice and inspired genres of music. wow! i really didn't think i would hear any big diference but lakland has a really clearer sound.
My USA 44-94 is on the way ! I cannot wait to play this bass!!! :-)
I have a Lakland 5502 Skyline Deluxe from 2002 with Bartolini. It sounds great! You can get a tons of tones out of it, and the neck is a dream!

But what is sure I like the Bartolini tone more! :)
Great playing! Still sounds like a LAkland to me. I could spot it a mile off. Very rich glassy tone but somehow not as vibey as the old fenders
it had the jazz tone, the p bass tone was a bit more rangy and it did not have the stingray tone.
Three cool basses on 1 vid! I now want to get all three!!! Antigua J-bass, also cool.
great playing, loved that little clicking pop thing...lol
Can anyone explain what settings are being used for each of the comparisons?
That would be really, really useful. I must say, between the P-bass and J-bass, the sounds are almost indistinguishable. However, the Musicman sound definitely sounds a little thinner on the Lakland. All amazing basses!!!!!
They have it as the audio files on the Lakland website under the slap riff...

hes a killer bassist!
this bass is just right and has its own voice
It pretty much nailed all the sounds... except the ray slap tone. Im sorry but that sound just cant be duplicated. Lakland basses are great though too!
In person, it really can nail a Stingray. Have to play with the eq, treble wide open, mid and bass flat, it's there.
I think lakland sounds really similar to the jazz bass, but it is very "middy" in comparison with the the P-bass and a little thinner than the Stingray.

they have passive pickups and a active preamp
That's all real ,I have 55-02 deluxe
It can do a lot of sounds.
I will post a compare video ,too.
As soon as possible.
From this video the bass does seem versatile but it's noticeable that it's got a little more mid-range than the other basses. It didn't sound as full than the others though, which could be a set-back for some players i guess.

That old Stingray makes my heart ache.
I see Ian Allison rocking all of those fine instruments and doing a great demo!!
@iallison2112
Indeed
gotta love the internet with noone picking up sarcasm. the original post was meant for 'handidrummed' who stated that all 3 basses were passive
im useing this vid to decide to get a fender p or a warwick jazz
I would agree this vid doesn't do the lakland much justice. Go see a band that uses one live (death cab, wilco, etc) and it's quite different, perhaps due to model too...One curious question is also what all of you are listening to this video on.

long story short...Lakland purely kicks ass ^_^
alot of people are saying theses basses are the new fender. there great playing and sounding and they can pretty much fool u into thinking that they are fenders. but im not a fan of active electronics
Great idea in theory but the Stingray tone isn't there.
It does a pretty good P and J bass tones but not so much the Stingray's slap tone.

Ok! I'm gonna order me some Bartolini Pickups. They are made in America.
@alembicbassguy I agree.. cuts through like you wouldnt believe
Musicman Musicman Musicman !!!!!
the p bass sounded alot brighter than the lakland.
My 55-02 covers it all. If you can't find your desired tone, It doesn't existe.
Second single coil mode(second coil is used).
my dear lord this mans got pocket!
love jazz bass
They sound very close but the Lakland to me sounds more "flawless" and sterile due to its active electronics. I much prefer the tone of all 3 passive basses.

lol nothing touches that jazz
impressive
The info to the right says it's a 4-94, so guess it's not a 44-02 ;)
People are too partial, which is normal. In a blind tes I'll bet Lakland does them all exactly in tone.
Be open minded, be true! :-)
Laklnad is an exceptional bass! period.
There is no Bass that can emulate the tone and bite of a Musicman Stingray
Bartolini's made Lakland, not LH3. I prefer the barts than the laklands pickups and pre
funny.... i didn't know that stingrays were passive
Not sure if this has been covered, but can you, or someone, post the (approximate) preamp settings that delivered these tones? Sounds great btw. Thanks!
Waths the mid frequency on the pre ?
anybody still knows the name of the first slapriff he plays? can't remember where i know it from
When i listen to the last one, it was totally different..
But Lakland's sound is really cool~
Actually, first fender jazz is best of best..
i think i like the music man stingray the best.
Yeah, it can sound pretty much like the jazz and musicman but i find it less mellow and musical than the p-bass. i guess its subjetive though..
Lakland are great Basses they come close to the tones but not quite there, especially the Musicman it had a richness full sound the Lakland sounded middy, close tho
Just picked up a 55-02. Is there any one who knows the settings (ballpark) this guy used to get his tones? Help a brother out!
4:42 starts the real thing!!!
I'm in love with that jazz bass! So sexy!
Hi, are you playing in active or passive mode? this is important on changing the tone
How many pedals is he using on the Lakland!
does anyone know which fender jazzbass that is ??? i wanna have it^^
Wow! So it's three old fart basses in one!
Is it just me or do the originals sound way better?
it is
Lakland are great basses, period .I had them all..Stingrays are great but are toomuch in your face, jazz basses are everyones perrenial favorites.lakland are great contenders!
The Lakland is great. The Stingray is better. Sorry, because I really wanted the Lakland, but the 'Ray just kills it.
