Welding And Powder Coating My 1st Lawnmower Deck
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 мар 2020
- I've had many requests from people wanting my to try powder coating a lawnmower deck so we had this deck that required welding so we decided to give it a go. I was not happy with the new filler I had tried as it was supposed to be able to withstand powder coating temperatures of 200 deg C but it didn't seem able to handle the heat. Other than that, I was happy with the powder coating on the Lawnmower, What do you think?

i have to say you and gary have done a great job its turned out great and powder coating it was a lot easier than paint spraying it, and thanks for the shout out
No worries Roy.
Brilliant Martin, absolutely love the powder coating set up you have, someone will be very happy with that lawnmower. Keep up the great vids. Shaun
Thanks Shaun.
Love these videos Martin, great to see your back to this type of content. Very professionally delivered.
Thanks Richard.
"Put me on time lapse" Now there is a T-Shirt....👍
After many years you're still producing great videos, it's a real testament to your commitment and hard work, well done mate, we love it.
Thanks Al, glad you are still enjoying the vids bud.
It turned out really nice Martin. 👍👍👍
WOW that looks so much better than I thought it would. I mean it looks great but I just didn't think it would look that good. I only say that because I've never heard or seen anyone who has ever done it before. Congratulations on your first powder coating of a mower deck! I hope to see more of that in future videos.
Keep the great videos coming.
Thanks for sharing and God bless
Thanks Roy.
Can't wait to see the finished mower. Its looking as great as last mower you did.
Check out Friday's vid Ben when it comes out.
Hi Martin,
What an inspiration you are.
After I watched yourself as you know I bought the powder coating kit (&20 colours) and a 73L oven for motorbike stuff. I've never had such a buzz watching my first parts melt and go shiny and cook off. Definitely going to build a bigger oven now I've caught the bug.
Thanks again Martin, and great channel.
I'm glad you enjoy the channel Hughie and gave the powdercoating a go, its so effective and simple, I should have had it ages ago but I thought it was too complicated.
@@retrorestore I'm same age as you and just thought it was a black art, I wish I had it years ago too. If it wasn't for you I still wouldn't have it.
The only thing I'm short of now is a filler, can you remember what your original stuff was ? If it works better but costs a bit more that's OK.
@@Hui9697 Yes It is Novol epoxy thermal putty I've just ordered another tin.
Don't worry, I'm sure the next mower will get better. Big Boy is not your friend, I think ;-)
We have now learned what is not compatible.
The other parts like the engine and plastic parts look even better!
Thanks for your video.
Yes Bernd, I have ordered the original heat filler.
Excellent work👍👍👍. Thanks for sharing.
Great video Martin deck looks great
I always enjoy watching your videos Martin thank you from South Africa
Well big boy it came out nice.. like the colour..
brilliantly done as always martin 🔧🔧🔧🔧🔧🔧🔧
Looks good Martin. Take care as always ❤️❤️
Love the rock steady background music
Good Job guy's don't look bad for old mower.
another great vid martin keep up the good work look forward to the next one
Neat! Looks almost New!👍
Going to be one sharp looking mower. Nice job
Very enjoyable video well done both
Good video Martin powder coating is great idea 😃😃
Brilliant work Martin it will look mint when it’s done
Splendid and very interesting as usual, nice big mower.
Thanks Ken
Nice work Martin.
Great work, it turned out beautifully Martin!
Thank you.
Very nice job you done Martin
Thanks bud.
Interesting vid. Cheers mate.
Good day Martin thanks for the info
Love it Martin, looks very nice, maybe a TIG welder to on the wish list xD
Cracking Martin will look mint when finished ,great these tinkering vids
Nice job,
Great job Martin you don't half work fast on the time lapse lol 👍👍
That's my normal speed Alan lol
Fir play Martin it turned out well I love the tinkering videos
Cheers William.
You have the best background music on RUclips. Not even joking !!! Great job btw
Thanks bud. I do choose it carefully.
great job guys , gary fantastic job on the engine,
Under my supervision Snobby lol
@@retrorestore master, you never teach them all your tricks ..lol
@@s-s-p704 Haha, do as I say and not as I do lol
it is ok Martin looks good.
Great video Martin. Deck turned out great, i would make some curved shaped decals to go over where the imperfection of the filler is,put a decal on each side give it some bling lol.
Cheers, Jeff.
Nice idea Jeff
Good job on the mower deck powder coating Martin 👍
You'll see it in Friday's vid Jamie.
Martin, I too was blowing through the thin metal when I tried to stitch weld parts in place. But as you stated, a copper backer helps keep from blowing through. So does brass and aluminum as well. So any piece of aluminum you have laying around works for a backer plate when welding. Then you can stitch weld new metal unto older metal easily. Just an idea. Thumbs Up!
Yes Gary, I'm on the look out for a decent bit.
Top tips Martin, keep em coming, I've got some mountfield decks, Honda engines that have similar rust holes as that one, still editing at the min, just got another 2 briggs and stratton engine services and running before dinner, I think my neighbor's think I'm mad starting lawnmowers in the evening lol.
All those mowers starting and no grass being cut lol.
@@retrorestore yeah lawns never been so short, like the wacky racers....
Nice repair Martin. It will never rust again now that the deck is powdercoated.
After seeing the 1st mower what u sprayed and and na the one u powered coated I think the spayed one is best and the green ti primmer hids a multitude of sins lol to give a top refub happy days
Great video Martin, I used a small amount of that Big Boy filler on a die-cast car and that showed through a bit as well. A cracking lawnmower though. Well done!
Thanks Jeff, I won't use it again.
Nor will I
Time for the Taryl putty Martin.
Beautiful job Martin, such a shame about the filler but as you said we are learning as we go.
Yes Barbara, I've ordered the original filler I was using.
thats a shame about big boy ,but still turned out really good, looking forward to many more, all the best martin ................dougie
Yeah Doug, i've ordered my normal filler now.
Hi Martin. If the quality of finish justifies the cost .. try a product from USC called "All Metal". If you have the patience to sand it smooth (it sets hard as hell) you will not get the sinking from heat you had with that stuff in the video.
I've just re ordered my original filler Elliott
Nice job Martin . Perhaps some leading might be better .
The other filler works well Pete. I saw this and thought i'd try it.
Yes sorry bad memory Martin the other bondo worked well.
Hi Martin be nice to see one of those mower decks chromed ? now that would be something, ATB Wayne.
Yes, I will be trying that soon
overall a really nice job you could recoat it bake it again I think it would smack your eyes when it comes out of the oven. nice job good video as always
I wouldn't want to walk into a shop and ask for that filler by name :)
Haha, I know what you mean lol
Another good video have you tried putting water on the plastic painted with revive it when it has set to see if it goes milky may be worth a try i have seen reviews where people say it goes milky and streaky when water is spilt on flooring after this was used would be interesting to see if it does the same on plastic.
good job martin gary from crewe
Martin
Have a word with someone who's on a strip out...
See if you can get some copper out of an old power board or busbar chamber...
Good for backing pads...
A "neodivvydumb" magnet...?
Sounds like we've just had the 'word of the day' there...
Try baking that filler off before laying down some colour....
Has it got styrene in it...?
🇬🇧☺️
i'll probably try it again on some test pieces. I've just re ordered the original filler.
Get a infrared thermometer gun. Start the timer when part gets to temperature. Wheelpaints do a good high temp filler 👍
I already do that bud. My original filler worked fine.
Enjoyed that! Engine looks great as well as the deck. Like the heat resistant grey. Is it cheaper to powder coat than paint?
It appears so Paul, No primer or lacquer needed and no runs.
Looking to shine my own lawn mower up seen you mention pledge revive it few times. Where do you get yours from I'm having trouble getting any. Also like to add love the videos guys keep the content coming, enjoy watching them and absorbing very helpful information.
I get it from Ebay. You have to keep checking as it sells out quickly bud.
Hi Martin, in the first part of the vid I was going to say stop hogging the tools and let Gary have ago, but then I saw him skiving near the fire🤣🤣🤣 could you give us a link to the easy coat powder coating gun kit, good vid thanks🙂👍
Its ll below the video Luke in the description with a discount code as well.
retrorestore Hi yes I noticed that after I commented, thanks👍
Just wondering what that revive it would be like on on my plastic trim on the car . Would it be better than back to black ??
Worth a try.
I was thinking the same as I have plastics fading on my SEAT rear wiper which is a common issue as my brother has a Skoda with the same issue.
Do you think revive it would work on a motorhome that has gone dull? White glassfiber gelcoat?
Might be worth a try.
Looks great, how much for this when its finished?😉
Can't find the revive it anywhere can you tell me where you bought it. Looks great for doin black van bumpers and plastics. Thanks
Its sold out on Ebay at the moment since I did my video.
Should have just stuck a retro sticker over it :-) but like you say good practice ....
I've just bought a welder myself I have a hole in my exhaust and thought it would be good to practice on what power setting and wire speed settings would you recommend for an exhaust? I'm using 0.6mm wire.
For my welder, Wire speed between 6-7 and switch on low and number 1
Would that pledge work on car plastics and survive longer than first wash like other back to black type products, I've tried auto glym professional stuff and that only lasted a few weeks.
Only one way to find out, give it a go.
I hate too much rpm on grinder for cutting. During cutting by my bosch with variable rpm I never exceed 6400 rpm. Only when grinding with flap sander i use 11000 rpm.
Looks great Matin good job. Shame about the filler what’s the other brand you use?
Glenn
Its called Novol epoxy thermal putty
I assume the welder was on its lowest settings ?
I have a Clarke machine and its beautiful when its set up ... but I use argoshield gas
Confidence
Blow a hole... build it back up. time and patience
When you get a good tack spot ... hit that again and melt it into a pool as you go
Lots of tricks to save you blowing holes in
Would have looked better just built up with steel .... no filler
My cheapo Aldi FERROX welding helmet seems fine too
Been experimenting with that aluminium low melting rods from china using a blow torch
Just bought myself a Clarke plasma cutter .... WOW !!
It's easier to cut the hole to fit the shape instead of cutting the shape to fit the hole.
How long and what temp do you cure the novol putty at?
It has 3 temp ranges. I use 140 degC for 20 mins.
Hi Martin, great video. Can you let us know roughly how much powder you used and also how much that amount of powder would cost. Thanks. Keep up the great videos.
Probably about the same amount as half a tin of spray paint. Half a kilo is £7.99 but you'l use less than half of that.
Hi where do you get that plege revive it from
Ebay but its run out at the moment.
Wait that gun works with just compressed air ?
Great video Martin, what do you reckon of the Onion mixing boards?
I like them and use them all the time.
retrorestore that’s great, I’ll get one ordered up. Cheers Martin. 👍
I'd buy a restored mower over a new one all day long
10:54 If you don't have to disassemble this cover, don't do this. This is very thin metal plate, mounted by strong glue, and it almost always bends when is disassembled. VERY GOOD RESULT OF POWDER COATING :)
he didn't remove the cover to spray it. It was done on the mower.
Where do you get the pledge from?
Ebay but its sold out at the moment in the UK
@@retrorestore thankyou ill keep m eye out, it looks better than tyre shine and back to black.
I don’t think you should use that filler again because I seen the way it turned out and it is not up to the standard you have with these lawnmower videos but great video and looking forward to seeing it when it is done
Yes, I have ordered my normal filler for this.
retrorestore have you got new background music
The finish it left looked almost like the filler was gassing underneath the powdercoat. I'm wondering whether it might of needed abit longer to fully go off?
Mark Forrester It might have done
What lawnmower deck is this from ??
They are all pretty much the same bud. I an't remember this brand
@@retrorestore I've asked you this because I've got one 99% similar to this , even the engine and it has some problems with the front wheel system. I wanted to know if you have a video where you disasemble it. I found it in your vids, it is a Sovereign Lawn mower with Hond Gcv160 engine.
What a shame about that blooming filler...but obviously it’s much better than it was an it works in principle
Why don't they powder coat cars? Would that even be possible?
sir you should have welded a patch below that main patch any thing could go through that filla bud a stone one day and hit some one in the eye makes it dangerous dont you think do it properley
thanks for your reply.
how can I get a fridge magnet......😅
None in stock at the moment.
Pledge revive it, that will sell out before face masks lol
It has already on Ebay lol
Had to buy pledge from a hobby shop.....
try lead loading the repair......filler is for newbies..lol
Not worth it on a Lawnmower.
can you not just bond that copper pipe in the the sheds earth ??? all tho it is touching the fan to
Yes its a work in progress.
Scrap it
Another rusty deck. Repaired a few of them in my time
I bought the Easy Coat system last year after watching you Martin , I think I want a MIG now. I might have to unsubscribe Mr Butler you're costing me a fortune !!!
Haha, Go on, get one lol
@@retrorestore I think I'm going to mate 👍👍
Like the video never seen anything like that before thank you
Big boy ruined my Scooby Martin would never recommend👎👎
I won't use it again John.
Saying is Martin buy cheap buy twice. I've been caught out before bud
