  • Make Your Own Round Nose Scraper Turning Tool! You won't believe what it's made from!
So I wanted a wider, round nosed, negative rake scraper. This is particularly useful for the inside of turned bowls to reduce the undulations you can get with a smaller scraper or gouge.
My first thoughts were - "What steel will I use?"
Then I thought - "Surely truck/ute leaf springs must have good quality steel that might be suitable. Why not give it a try and see how it goes?"
So I bought 2 leaf springs second hand through a local online classified sales site called 'Gumtree' ( a bit like an Oz version of Craigslist). They cost me $16 USD so that's a lot of steel for the money and not much to lose if it didn't work.
    The result is this video.
I have to say - the tool works amazingly well and with the tree stake/post for the handle that cost nothing, the whole thing probably cost about $5 all up. As you can see I didn't use a lot of the 2 leaf springs so there is plenty to make other tools.
    Tell me what you think!

Lol. Cheers mate. I have got to say I was impressed at how well it works. Looks like spring steel is good for making turning tools from.

Nice job 💯 What was the paste that turned it so dark? How wide was the finished product also?

Thank you Freddy. The leaf spring I think was 3". The paste is a home made finish that is really good and a lot cheaper than the store bought variety. I made it according to Deadwood's channel. ruclips.net/video/0zdLQczkNbE/видео.html
