  • I demonstrate how to make a square scraper for wood turning from an inexpensive HSS blank from Amazon. I made a square woodturning scraper but it could be ground as a round nose bowl scraper or even a skew! Here is a product link amzn.to/35gh2mE

    Where did you buy your CBN wheels?

      Don Spoor , 180 grit from DWay. 80 grit from Ken Rizza, woodturnerswonders.com. Cost about half as much. Better value. Watch my new video tomorrow.

    Hi Mike, another great video! I’ve recently taken up wood turning when I retired, and I’ve used your videos to take me on that learning journey, which has been great fun, so thank you. Mike J

    Hi Mike, many thanks for the idea, I've made myself two scrapers like yours. Do you have any feedback having used these tools for a while?

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  2 года назад +2

      No. A HSS scraper is pretty basic. A square scraper is not a tool I use much. I already had several round scrapers so made a square one to have on hand. I will probably use it in an upcoming video on end grain hollowing.

    When you started grinding at about the five minute mark, I thought your phone was ringing. Haha. I guess they don't sound like that anymore. Great video. Thank you.

    I got like 12 of these bars all different sizes for about $35…scrapers, skews and beading tools for life!
    Metal lathes used these so they are out there for cheap usually a whole lot of them when the old stuff is being sold off. Here in police state Switzerland it’s a lot of great quality metal from England okay bye

    Tips: If you get a short piece of CPVC pipe in a size just able to slide over the handle of your vise, you can get considerably more torque on your vise and be able to clamp things much more tightly.
    Sharpie on your tang when you're testing the fit will rub off on the wood, showing you exactly where you need to take off material - paint the entire tang with sharpie, test it, and you'll see by the shiny spot where you need to take it down. =)
    Did the HSS bar come in a hardened condition from amazon?

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for your tips. Yes, the HSS blank is hardened as it is used in the metal industry as a parting tool.

    Great video, Mike. Tools are expensive...this helps a lot. Did you wind up adding epoxy to the handle?

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  6 лет назад +1

      No. Sometimes I have but it should not be necessary. Have you ever seen a commerical WT fastened with epoxy? I have not.

    I definitely am going to make one of these thanks Mike. What did you use as your search words for the has bar?

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  6 лет назад

      Search terms for HSS blanks can be tricky. Start with the references to the blanks on my Amazon shop and experiment. A search on ebay may not give the same results on Amazon.

    Hey Mike ...I've come to really enjoy your videos ...espeically your tool videos, but all are very good ..thank you for them!
    Will definitely buy from your aff links, can't buy from my own :)
    Do you know where I can find some hss round bar 1/2" or bigger?
    Will these bars be able to be shaped with regular grinding wheel? I have the white oxide wheels?
    Is it necessary to be careful of overheating when cutting, shaping or sharpening?
    Thanks again & Merry Christmas!
    Scott

      I would search on Amazon and eBay. 1/2 round is an odd size for DIY WT tools. Hard to find in longer stock like 200mm. What kind of tool do you plan on making? I would forget about milling a spindle or bowl gouge. AO wheels will do fine. It is difficult to overheat HSS on a grinder to the point of softening the edge.

      Thanks for the reply Mike, I was thinking about trying to grind a gouge of some sort, just wanted to experiment. But if you think its a waste of time, I'm good with that!

  • @JamesCouch777

    Rather than cutting a tang on the HSS it might be easier to just weld or braze one on. I've done that and it seems to work well.

    On the HSS blank do you have to harden and then anneal it?

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  6 лет назад

      No, the blank I used was already treated. Heat treating HSS is not feasible for most folks. You need to read the product description to make sure you buy it already hardened.

  • @accesswoodworx
    @accesswoodworx 5 лет назад

    Is there a benefit to not hardening and tempering your steel? I am just starting out making scrapers for the lathe, but I have always heat treated my chisels and other cutting tools so I don't have to sharpen them every 10 minutes.

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  5 лет назад

      HSS requires metallurgy knowledge's.

      Thanks, but am not into metal working. Carbon steel was replaced by HSS for turning tools years ago since it holds an edge better and can't lose its temper while sharpening. If you are not familiar with HSS you might want to investigate.
