EXACTLY! We need PROFESSIONALS to teach us how to do our hair NOT influencers lol. I've noticed that this is why I was so confused. They were telling me about products that work for THEIR specific hair type. I need to know MINE! I didnt understand the basics. I needed to learn the basics. A PROFESSIONAL will tell you that. Lol sad how long it took me to get it but I'm a millennial so cut me some slack lol

    • @jk9084

To be honest, I don't agree. I learned way more from influencers about taking care of my natural hair - especially the ones who look at it from a scientific/ayurvedic/100% pure standpoint - than from black hair stylists as their remedy has always been to press, keratin treat or relax my natural hair without giving zero advise on regimen. I have brought my hair back to health from breakage and heat damage twice with the help of influencers. It was wayyyy after the YT natural hair movement started that natural hair salons came about where they actually know what they are doing and they still omit ayurveda.

you said a mouthful there honiiiiiie.
i say i am from kitchenstylelist to future license cosmetologist.
Since i started school i had to throw out so much of what i used to know.
2nd cosmetologist has access to quality products that average people don't. for long term better protection for the hair.
And yes there are some cosmetologist that care more about money than the health of the hair.
i am so glad that i invested in something i love. and is gaining so much knowledge.
as a former kitchenbeautician i have to admit i did so many things wrong.

This. I just started going to a stylist late last year after not having a regular stylist, basically my entire life. And I love that she goes through my hair and talks about what she sees and talks to me about my regimen. I just went to see her two days ago and I ended up just pulling the trigger and having her cut off what I knew was just damage that just wasn't going to be fixed.

@@wickedgaming91 I’ve used both ceramic and titanium and I’ve heard that titanium heats up evenly which requires less passes through the hair. I’’m currently using a titanium flat iron and very pleased with the results but I do use it on the lowest setting and only pass through my hair one time. I definitely think if you don’t know what you’re doing and don’t understand proper heat settings, you can for sure easily burn your hair whether you’re using ceramic or titanium.

I have thick 4c hair and your technique is SPOT ON. I know my hair and have had stylists who clearly didn’t know what to do with 4c hair. Can’t tell you how many times I wanted to turn around and say, “what the HELL are you doing”? You cannot use the same tools, products, and techniques for all hair types. Great job!!!

  • @abawitx
    @abawitx 3 года назад +50

The issue is "professional" stylists who take your money are NOT educated nor are willing to be taught to grow their technique and care, they do not care about protecting the guests hair. They are also fairly unprofessional in their salon practices and very impatient with tools used on a guests hair, causing damage yet claiming it is the guests fault for the damage. Their goal is to book as many clients as they can per day. Many have colorism issues (yeah i said it) and will treat your service roughly if you look a certain way (dark skin) or have coilier hair than others. These are sad realities so where are we to go if the majority of stylists don't have the education you do?
I refuse to go to salons and have learned everything from RUclipsrs (those who do understand the science, chemistry and make up of the hair shaft) and my type 4c/b/z hair has thrived because of what i have learned online. I have only had poor experiences in salons and lost hair and money due to it,. So many "influencers" also have the bad salon experience that forces them to learn how to do hair on their own. We are in 2021 and we still don't have professional stylists who truly know how to do black guest's hair. i know of maybe 3 nationwide? including you, who i would possibly go to, none of which are in my city. This is the problem.

    • @cfoster6804

I agree 100%. I stopped going for years and decided to give stylists a chance again recently. First one was super nice but my front section suddenly thinned out after going to her 2 times. The second one didn't bother talking to me beyond the initial greeting and the have a nice day after she got her money.😑 Asking her questions was like pulling teeth, she scratches the scalp with her nails while shampooing, and burned me several times with blow dryer and flat iron. The trim and final results were bomb though! Still wouldn't go back. I found one more stylist I'm gonna try but if she messes up I'm out. That's why I'm here watching silk press videos...just in case.

That part about finding a reputable hairstylist/ cosmetologist is true. I went to a salon for a silk press and the cosmetologist was mainly involved in silking my hair.
At one point, the cosmetologist had to stop doing someone else's hair to prescribe which treatment to use, and that's only because I asked for a different one. The assistant did the washing, conditioning AND blow-drying, WITH THE COMB ATTACHMENT, so my hair was poofy from jump. The silk press came out great, but didn't last very long. To be fair, I didn't wrap my hair the 4th night and the night after that, I put in some flexi rods, which ended up being a complete fail.
Now, I have a few looser curls in different parts of my head, thank God they aren't that noticeable. Thing is, this was my first time getting it done. During the silk press, she said that my hair would be more manageable, but I didn't want my hair to be more "manageable"! The fuck! No shade to her salon and staff, but I'll definitely look for a different cosmetologist next time I get the service done.

She eventually came to tears over that situation... Its my personal opinion that she needs you or deeper than hair because your both absolutely undeniable with your natural hair. Gifted hands

Being mixed my hair has like 3 different curl types and multiple textures as well throughout. And I always use different products when I style my hair differently. You definitely know hair! I have the type of hair that cannot be detangle dry. It's very uncomfortable and it will pull my hair out. I have extremely curly hair and therefore it tangles a lot. Most stylist don't have enough experience to know that my hair has to be wet before it can be detangle. You know your stuff. I love this channel. ✂️✂️✂️✂️🎨🎨🎨🎨👍

Or patience to actually take out the knots or tangles. Not just rip them out. That’s my biggest fear with someone doing my hair. My hair is already fine or(thin) enough. I do not need to be losing any more strands cuz the person I’m paying is frustrated

Love your videos! I have a head of super kinky coily hair (resisting the urge to hair-type myself haha) and I've never straightened it before-- I'm TERRIFIED of walking away with a head full of fried keratin. But once I get to my length goals (and you finally start coming to ATL) I'll be booking with you!
I'd also love to see more vids from you on general education for at-home naturals-- how to properly tend to our ends at home, deep conditioners you approve, your opinions on clay masks, etc.

YESSSSS let em know trav🤣 now what I need is a breakdown of density (or strands size?) Bc I was SHOCKED to compare my daughter's shed hair to mine (her high porosity type 3 something to my no porosity 4z-5g😅) and my individual strands are easily 10x thicker than hers! I don't see anyone talking about this, but I think it's what determines the curl! Thank you💕

Individual strand thickness won't determine the curl pattern or porosity.
Fine, Normal & Coarse is what describes the thickness of each strand.
Low, Normal & High density is how many hairs you physically have on your head. This is also referred to as Thin, Normal or Thick hair.
So it's possible to have Fine Thick Hair (hair strands aren't thick but there's a lot of strands)
Or Coarse Thin Hair (hair strands are thick but there's not many of them)
Also your hair's density will determine shedding; the more strands on your head the more shedding you will experience.
The normal density sheds around 100 hairs/day.
      Hope this helps.
