To juxtapose that even more. Jayce makes a very strong emotional connection with another person. Viktor literally loses some of his and becomes even more alone.
@@mandodelorian4668 yep, the only strong emotional connection he has is Jayce himself. that's why them going separate ways will be viktor's way of leaving his humanity behind
I hated that scene, but not because it's bad, because it develops its characters in such a way, it makes you have Jayce and Mel. But again, Mel and Jayce both have different stories, written in their own way. The thing that makes Arcane so good, it's that all characters are written in their own way, and have their own arcs, which leads to liking them more.
@@eiffiedarkness649 I'm mainly sad that her design just doesn't fit League one but, it could be fitting with making her a singer that fights to free skaters kind and actually could look like she is from Piltover but.... No
@@kianbrusselbach6106 I’m hoping that they give her some connection to jinx. They’re both similar ages and seraphine came from zaun. it makes sense that little powder would be curious about the pink haired girl that hardly leaves her house. Seraphines disability (yes extremely powerful hearing is a disability,) probably means she didn’t get to socialise and play as a kid so her childish naivety could be a connection to jinx (someone else her age that’s emotionally stunted.)
Listen to the kids call the little girl back to the group. They call "Sky!" The Sky that Viktor vaporized in his lab is somebody he's known since childhood...
@@jackspratt7264 I think It's not that's he's blind but he knows that he will die soon. Like in this scene where sky tells him that he can continue his reaserch tomorrow, but he reject It cuz he knows he will die soon.
That was so sad. And it’s clear that Victor’s path from the undercity to Piltover scientist has been an inspiration to Sky. In every practice speech she makes to herself, she talks about how amazed she is by Victor’s work. It’s so sad that by the time she’s ready to make a move and ask him out, he’s dying and is completely focused on saving himself, so much so that his experiments put her in danger.
"The mutation must survive" - Singed VS. "It's not enough to give people what they need to survive...you gotta give 'em what they need to live." - Ekko This show is absolutely amazing with how it addresses themes.
she also said 'that can travel and travel quickly' wait til she learns about blitzcrank(the robot that viktor made, its not a spoiler its not in the arcane) and its w skill(which makes him go quicker for a duration then slows itself).
When Viktor came to Singed and says he "understands now," the look Singed gave looked like he pitied Viktor. Like "now you realize how harsh the world is, and understand the dark side of the pursuit of knowledge." Like Viktor was becoming more like Singed, and Singed knew that isn't good. Yet he still gave Viktor what he wanted. I could be wrong on all this, but that look stuck with me, and some of Singed's other action showed he was not completely heartless, but still valued results above all else. I think that's why I find Singed is so interesting.
True, I think we usually see the 'knowledge above compassion' type depicted as evil. But he is nice to Viktor and doesn't actively inflict pain for the sake of it. He probably understands he may be torturing subjects and doesn't like that but still considers it the right thing to do for the pursuit of progress. Interesting and real, like the rest of Arcane.
Singed is not demonstrating sociopathy. He indicates clearly that he understands what others are going through and can empathize (rewatch the video). Singed believes that his work will justify the suffering it causes.
@@laurencekerr956 nah, Singed also subtly asks Silco if he can take what‘s about to happen to Jinx, analyses his reaction and notices he‘s too attached to bare witnessing the operation, which is why he drugs him. Singed respected Silcos emotions and tried to lessen his heartbreak. That ain’t no sociopath.
I need to hear you talk about the moment when Victor finally runs for the first time. That feeling of success of overcoming not only your limitations but peoples expectations
Note how Viktor called Rio by name and Singed calls Rio "the mutation". This alone gives a hint on how different they where thinking about this adorable creature. Every word has weight in this series. That´s why I love it! Great video by the way! :) I hope this isn´t the last time you talked about Viktor on this channel. Edit: Singed gave this creature the name Rio. But he still says "the mutation". It´s possinle, that he actually has compassion with Rio, but he sees him/her more as a subject than as a living beeing.
I kind of get the vibe, when Rio is down and hooked up to the tubes, that when he says "the mutation must survive" he wasn't actually talking about Rio but Rio's mutation. If that seems a bit vague, what I mean here is that he is more concerned about Rio's genetics than Rio the creature. his phrasing does work as a nice wordplay to set that up, and I could be totally wrong, and/or he could care about both. Subtly is a wonderful thing in a show! ;-)
@@mandodelorian4668 I think you could be right about Singeds viewpoint. I don´t even know when Rio died or if ... he? died at all. There is so much to discover and to think about. It will be hard to wait for season 2 anyway. But I hope they´ll take their time to make it another masterpiece like season 1. :)
@@multivitaminsaft1997 I have a theory that Singed's daughter named Rio before she died (I assume; we dont know what happened to her yet) and thats why Rio is named and why Singed is obssesed with her surviving. considering Singed's other known expiriments, that sort of attachment is really unusual. This also explains his soft spot for Vik.
@@mandodelorian4668 Oh, absolutely. The scene setting when Singed says "I thought you understood...the mutation must survive" drives the point home very clearly that Singed is interested solely in the creature's genetic material, and doesn't at all care for the creature's quality of life.. His delivery of the line, and specifying 'the mutation' instead of Rio, gave me goosebumps.
True, but remember that Singed introduces the creature as Rio. It is deeper than that. I think Singed is able to shut off his empathy, not that he doesn't have any.
You described perfectly how Victor and Signed stands for the conflict between science and ethics. A theme that the next season will explore a lot more based on the hints the show has given us.
Oh god, I didn’t pick up on that while watching the show. I found the scenes with Rio suffering like that absolutely sickening, I don’t know if I can handle an entire season focusing on it 😅 I just hope they put that poor creature out of its misery
Also when he's chasing the boat, the way he trips and falls from the bright happy sunshine into the shadow of the cave where he's about to meet Singed is a pretty literal change in the narrative of his childhood experiences... DAMN this is a good show. Also thank you Georgia as usual for your wonderful videos I've loved every single one so far
It's also mirrored later when Viktor gets his first infusion of shimmer with the hextech core, which rebuilds his leg. The scene where he's walking and then running without his cane, the background is a pier with boats moving in it. Except this time, Viktor is outrunning the boats, instead of falling behind them. It even uses the same music in both scenes, just with a crescendo. A lot of character traits and events in Arcane are deliberately mirrored like this, like two sides of the same coin, showing the different perspectives of things.
@@rubefeo I'm actually a little sad about that. I'm not a gamer, I don't even know how to play LOL, but the show is so good that I started reading Viktors lore (he's my fav) and now I'm a little heartbroken at what he's going to do to himself and how his relationship with Jayce will change so drastically
There definitely is a lot of projecting done by adults onto children in this show, in my opinion. (Vander onto young Vi, the Dr. onto young Victor, Silco onto Jinx, etc)
the doctor is another character from league of legends, singed. vander and silco are not from the game. (though vander might become a character due to various hints in the show and game)
Yep, Ekko really brings the humanitarian touch that all the other brilliant minds are lacking post time skip. Can’t wait to see him working on season 2 because is gonna be either really cool or really heartbreaking how he’s gonna use his skills (players understand what I mean).
When Viktor comes to understand the meaning of Singed’s words, I think it applies to more than just their experiments. When he says “the mutation must survive”, he means that if Rio dies, so too will any hope of using what makes her unique. We see Viktor working tirelessly, ignoring Sky’s advances or any other kind of personal pleasure (as contrasted with Jayce), because he knows he only has so much time to perfect the one thing that might save him or at least let him leave a mark on the world. If he dies, then the world will lose everything that made him unique, everything that allowed him to accomplish what he has. If he dies, then perhaps the work will never be finished, and the last trace of his genius will die with him. When he finds himself close to death, and the man he looks up to rejects the one thing that might keep him alive, he thinks back on the most memorable words of one of the few other men he respected: “the mutation must survive”.
I really love the Singed of Arcane. They didn't change the fact that he is kind of a monster but that is not because he "likes" his job. Well if he doesn't like his job he wouldn't be a genius about it. But he is so detached about all the suffering it provokes that it makes him more frightening to me. Then again his interactions with Viktor makes him likeable. There's a dichotomy in his charadesign, like when he "heals" Jinx. He says "I understand this must be painful. I'm afraid it will only get worse." then you see him. His ravaged face makes him seems like he is grinning, smiling. It's reinforced by Jinx hallucinations when she sees Caitlyn smile and it flashes between her and Singed but that is just the state of his face.
I will like to point out that Singed did have anesthetic. Thing is, he used it on Silco to knock him out vs using it on Jinx to ease her pain during the procedure. That small detail alone showed us that Singed is an extremely sadistic character.
@@PrissyLissyBear Well we don't have any details on this. He shows a certain degree of concern for Silco. He warns him that the procedure will hurt and may kill her. It may be because the shimmer nullifies the effects of any anesthesis. Just look what it does to anyone, it transform them into raging monsters that are fast as fuck. Seems like the exact opposite of what a anesthesis would do. I don't think he is a sadist, he just didn't use it because it could jeopardize the operation. It's a theory of mine so i could be wrong.
@@Warlickx He gave the anesthetic to Silco so that Silco wouldn't interfer. It was a perfect opportunity for Singed to see if the Shimmer had reached its final stage.
I appreciate this analysis of Viktor. Not gonna lie, I was really hoping you'd cover his other moments, such as when he killed Sky, how he handled his impending death, his reaction to Jayce talking about the Undercity. There's so much that I thought would be covered, but hopefully there'll be a follow up :)
Most definitely looking forward to the follow up, too. This is a good precursor video though because it highlights key points of his core personality that inevitably lead to his rash and dangerous behavior when faced with his own mortality.
Im sure there will be a follow up: this title specifies Young Viktor. I think the scene where Adult Viktor tells Singed "I understand now" was there because it was a direct tie-in with the Young Viktor scenes. I'm sure an Adult Viktor video would/will tackle those key moments you describe!
The moment that you realise Young Viktor's cute giggle '' evlolved '' to an evil laugh in League of Legends when he is using the Laser. And the fact that both laughts are kinda for same reason...
@@alldy7836 It's from the lore of the game, that thing has been there for years, even if you research Viktor's picture you will see that at first look he seems like a mad cyborg scientist, which he isn't, but looks like.
I always found Viktor's facial expressions funny when he was feeding Rio because you can see how quick he was to switch to disgust because of all of the slime on his hand
Every character in Arcane is a victim of circumstance. No one is bad, no one is good, it's just a bunch of people with different backgrounds, trying to do the things they think are right. That is why I love Arcane so much, because it is such a breath of fresh air from all the garbage getting flushed out this year. Viktor and Jinx stories are just so heartbreaking, and it honestly hurts seeing their backgrounds and the way they develop. Fantastic video!
Not gonna lie, with all those Arcane reactions, you kind of make me understand the show better now. About how deeply the characters in League Of Legends were written and the quality of the animation of Arcane since it shows so much expression! Thanks!
Arcane improved the characters it adapted I think. Vi in league is just "The Vi stands for violence!" And is a "haha police brutality" joke, Caitlyn was mostly the steampunk eye candy, Jayce was just an insufferable jackass that liked proving he was big brained, etc. But seems like they're going back to be redoing lots of lore for older characters now, which is nice, such as Warwick's being redone a few years ago with hints at things that end up happening in Arcane, but before the show was even announced. Since they also made Cait's design a but less ridiculous eye candy, like giving her pants, I'm thinking they'll be redoing the designs and lore in league itself for the arcane characters
@@selinmadran8363 I really hope so. Though I Imagine they may not do large updates until atleast after S2 of Arcane so the characters are atleast closer to where they are in league. I think it's telling that Warwick's lore revamp happened during the time they were writing Arcane and was written the way it was.
@@GeorgiaDow I would like to think it is as the thought that he was never truly alone (she was always watching) but instead blinded by his own lack of self-worth which ultimatly lead him to kill the person he always had without knowing, reflects so well what a depressed person goes through, ruining connections of people who truly care... goosebumps
Seeing Viktor’s backstory and character arc in arcane really gives the beginning of the true motivation and reason to why Viktor is who he is in League. And that’s why I love this show more than anything I’ve watched recently. Its story telling and character development is exactly what I hoped riot would produce. Can’t wait for season 2 to continue the story.
Viktor is my favourite champion in League of Legends, and I was excited to see him in Arcane. What I wasn't expecting was him being this precious of a human being. I'd really appreciate if you did a full break down of Viktor's character
I love it! Can you please explain Jace and Victor's friendship? They are obviously best friends. Despite the disagreements that occurred between them, in episode 9, they agreed in their opinions and stood side by side in the council. Needless to say, they literally helped each other not to commit suicide.
I love the "two sides of the same coin" dynamic at play between Heimerdinger's way of progression through science being framed by his insistence on safety and doing good, and Singed's Machiavellian and amoral ethos on research and experimentation. Heimer's insistence that Hextech be properly vetted for a decade or better before being put in the hands of the general public shows that he is operating within a firm moral framework. We know Singed is the architect of Shimmer, (some folks speculate that Rio's mutation may have been the breakthrough that led to the development of Shimmer), and it's clear by both Shimmer's development and Singed's interactions with Viktor concerning Rio's survival, that Singed is operating without the moral limitations of Piltover's academy. Then we see Viktor, who truly believes his work can bring prosperity to the residents of the Undercity, being at odds with the limitations of Heimerdinger's moral framework in the form of his own mortality. I don't believe Viktor's decision to return to Singed was an act of selfish self-preservation; I think he is genuinely frightened that his partner Jayce has lost sight of their goal and that Hextech will never have his vision of bettering the lives of those who need it most realized if his disease claims his life before the research is finished. Unfortunately for him, he now faces corruption on two fronts; Singed's amoral view on science and progress at any cost, and whatever corruption we will see come from the Hexcore. The quality of Arcane season 1's writing has me wholly convinced that season two is going to be a heartwrenching fall from grace for Viktor as desperation mounts while he is racing the clock. I absolutely love your breakdown of the facial animations and effectiveness of their expressions. I'm not sure I've ever been so succinctly convinced by the emotive-ness (is that a word?) of animated expression as I was while watching Arcane!
I have two questions about Viktor. The first being, why did he experiment on himself on episode 8 without shimmer and second why did he never comment on the fact that Heimerdinger is missing from the council?
Everything was spot on. Great job. Please do Victor full dive. He's so interesting and complex, and there's so much more to explore. His relationship with Jayce, Heimerdinger, and Sky(the thing with her is most heartbreaking cus she has known him since childhood, as we see here), his views on politics, his desire to help the undercity, his stance against the weaponization of Hextech, remember when everyone was in favor of escalating and misusing the technology(Mel, her mother, Jayce, and Vi) he was the voice of reason(that's not why we invented Hextex, there's always a choice), the final arc when he finally outruns the ship is also a masterpiece, so everything deserves to be covered, he's just too much. Thank you so much for your work. 100% quality again.
yeah Singed once had a daughter. Heimerdinger being immortal might be the reason they separated. Heimerdinger has been living for hundreds of years; and probably learnt that sometimes letting go is the best decision. While Singed couldn't accept his daughter's death, and Viktor is trying to stay alive. History really is repeating itself.
I do not think that Heimer is immortal, what if someone chopped his head off or just shoot him, make him explode or something like that, i do not think he would Survive - this applies to every Yordle, i just cant believe they are immortals
@@Homelanderwasright oh, i thought they were. If they're not, it still applies. Someone that's been living that long must've seen so much. Like, a person they know turned to corruption just to stay alive or keep someone alive, how many good people turned bad, and magic that were initially used for good but then being used to destroy civilizations,.
@@Homelanderwasright they are canonically inmortal the same way elves in Tolkien's Arda are. They don't age once in adulthood and don't die of natural causes. They can be killed though.
@@rociopaoloni5080 oh thank god they can be killed, it was bothering me that they couldnt be killed, while watching arcane and heimerdinger says he is 300y.o i was thinking ..OMG how does he not die, didnt he meet any danger in his life, no one tried to kill him? Like jeez
There is also a parallel I don't see people talking about. When Viktor asked Singed "You did this?" It was a direct parallel and opposite to Vi's comment to Powder on episode 3.
I love Viktor, he's one of my fav characters and he delivered my favorite line of the whole show "We lost our dream... In the pursuit of great, we forgot to do good"
I think the fact that someone can make a detailed psychoanalysis of a fictional character based completely off of the facial expressions of an animated show says a lot about the level of effort, dedication, and ingenuity that went into the entire animation process. Huge props to Fortiche and Riot Games off of that alone, among other things about the show.
Don't underestimate good writers. As someone who is creating stories to sell to the big public, these little details we see and we don't see are heavily considered. It's creativity spined to it's max. Every little nuance and detail makes a difference.
Arcane was a masterpiece, best content of 2021, but as a psychology professional and writer I did notice some major holes I could have fixed. Like how in the end Caitlyn broke character and wanted to gun Jinx down right in front of Vi, who was begging her to stop. Caitlyn is supposed to be modeled after Sherlock Holmes. She abhors murder. That final sequence made Cait seem like a villain willing to murder an abuse victim and should have been rewritten. Also, the end result of Jinx in Arcane would be a self-loathing depressive on a self destructive path because her own actions are to blame for all her misfortune. Jinx is supposed to be modeled after Harley Quinn. She laughs and smiles all the time while being outwardly destructive, not inwardly. This is because she is detached from the consequences of her own actions. Growing up, Powder would have had to save Vi, Vander, Mylo and Claggor in the factory and been praised for her actions, then watched as Marcus and a team of enforcers showed up and gunned them down anyway, because Marcus had it out for Vander. It needs to feel to little Powder that even if she does everything right her actions don't matter, that the universe is out to get her, she is a bad luck charm, she is jinxed. In the end Cait should have used the broken glass to cut herself free, stood up and started dissecting evidence. Explain the mannequins representing Mylo and Claggor, explain the Jinx and Powder chairs, explain why Jinx tied Vi and Silco up to opposite ends of a family table. It's a cry for help. Cait is meant to be a genius who is "On the Case!" She should have solved this case so her character could truly shine as the heroic woman she is. After showing Vi and Silco they are creating an identity crisis and torturing Jinx with their war she convinces them to put the past behind them and make peace, for Jinx' sake. They agree and Jinx feels validated in her actions. Then Marcus' wife busts down the door shouting about how they killed her husband on the bridge and just opens fire, Vi tackles Cait to protect her, Silco is fatally shot, and Jinx tumbles to collect her pistol and return fire to kill Marcus' wife. They Jinx has her devastating goodbye conversation with Silco, and this is the straw that breaks the camel's back. Once again she did everything right and the universe took her happiness away from her. So her little mind snaps, she empties herself of attachment and goes full sociopath, then marches into the world wreaking havoc and enjoying it because nothing matters anymore.
I'd love to see you take a look at Heimerdinger. He seemed fascinating in having trauma from old mistakes but never going into too much detail, and then falling to his lowest point before he meets Ekko and finds hope again.
The fact that the little girl at the waterside seems to be Sky Young from when he's older, is so interesting to me. She would seemingly have been one of the poor kids as well, and somehow ended up working hard enough to stand beside Viktor, as she failed to as a child, is an amazing touch. And on top of that, she, in her last moments, went to him this time, and stayed with him, the opposite of their childhood moment. She always thought he was amazing, she saw him when no one else did, she noticed his inventions before anyone, and grew to honor that in her work, her dedication, in still seeing him in a way no other woman seems to and even her death.
I loved this breakdown and seeing young Viktor always makes me smile because they made him so human in his strengths and weaknesses. I really hope she digs into the scene comparison of Viktor meeting Jayce at the penthouse when he was going to end it all and then Jayce interrupting Viktor when he spread Sky's ashes. So good.
I liked that Singed ended up putting Rio into a suspended animation type state, for me it shows that the way Victor reacted as a child affected him because instead of just continuing with the current way Rio was being kept alive(which looked extremely painful) he devoted his time to find a way to keep the mutation alive without it being in constant agony.
I think it is outstanding that you by describing Viktors peronality as a Kid do somekind of foreshadowing for his character lore in general. Same thing how they created his personality as a kid. He wants to make a difference. Thats his theme. And we saw it in Arcane one and we will see it in Arcane 2. It is some time until that and you might have other projects but as someone who knows the League lore about the characters in this show I would LOVE to see your reaction and more analysis. Please consider a Arcane Season 2 reaction. You showed that you care for the characters so much (I am talking about the Jinx/Jinx and Silco videos)!
It's interesting to see how Viktor and Singed met when they were both younger, and later on, when they met again as older and wiser individual. For Singed, making sacrifices in the name of experimentation and cultivation is necessary to succeed. After all, he would never be able to bring back his daughter Orianna if he never had that mindset. For Viktor, he initially sought to make all his inventions 'for the people' but when Heimer rejected his work for being too dangerous without considering his capacity to make things works, it brought him right back to Singed, realizing the old man's mindset was something he should have considered all along.
Is Orianna his daughter though? Last time I checked Orianna's father isn't Singed nor it was teased that was the case. It was more like those artisan of Piltover that like to make gadgets and was a very good one. Something changed?
@@rociopaoloni5080 I do believe that it has been a thought circled around - that Orianna is Singed's daughter. :0 Her lore has been changed throughout the year.
I just wanna say that even tho singed is technically a mad scientist. The dude is the best bro in the series. When Viktor comes back to him after all that time he gives him the dose of upgraded shimmer that not only has the potential to fix his broken body but it doesn't even seem to have negative side affects, and he just gave him this for free. When Silco runs in his office in the middle of the night with Jinx this man heals her up and doesn't even get a thank you. The doctor is imo the most unsung hero in the show
One thing do like is that Singed does not lie. He is not insistent to convince others. He is only offering options and waits to see who accepts. Victor makes mind reasoning on why Jayce "would understand" his experiment choice and ALL singed says is "perhaps". Not a "yes" to assure Viktor. Not a "no" to demotivate or fuel a rift. More a nudge that things can happen and Viktor should be prepared. Its a cautionary reply, hinting he has seen it before
I love how with every video I feel like a whole new dimension to a character in the show. I'm going to keep pushing for a solo Vi episode, because I think there's so much more to her as a person but if not, I'll keep watching because you're awesome
"The mutation MUST survive." - That scene always gives me shivers because I know what's gonna happen to the creature later. Singed is yet another perfectly written minor character; not much screen time but every single frame tells us something about himself or the world around him.
I love your breakdown of these characters. The fact that sometimes you sound like you are about to cry, really shows how much you love them. Right now I’m torn, I want to see you talk more about Jinx. But I also want to see you cover Vi and Caitlyn.
I rly like Viktor and the fact he's disabled to me was rly relatable and I liked feeling like I could relate to a character especially during his younger scenes since I was also an outcast
I think that it's amazing that while Jayce slowly wants more and more power, Viktor still just wants to help people. I can not unsee that he would also want to keep himself alive (and we want him to live), but it's still a noble goal. I haven't seen that likeable scientist character for a while. Maybe never. (The second reason why i like him is that i too have to use a crutch cause my leg hurts when i'm walking. And seeing him running was very awesome scene.)
"Good friends" joke made my day every time 😆 I think everyone is waiting for Jinx part 2. Jinx is probably the most emotionally disturbed character of the whole Arcane series and seeing another video about her will be super exciting.
@@GeorgiaDow thank you for remembering that it was me 😀. Jinx-Vi-Caitlyn relationship is one of the best things the creators of the show have done. I'd love to see why you think Jinx hated Cait so much and in another video why Vi trusted Caitlyn so quickly. The last one, even though I love them as a couple still seems unbelievable to me. Greetings from Polish fan!
Thank you for another excellent analysis, I'm really enjoying this series of videos you've been doing on Arcane. You do a fantastic job of shedding new light on the characters and their motivations. Like how Silco was just as dependant on Jinx as Jinx was on him. Regarding Viktor, I didn't fully comprehend why Viktor told Singed that he "understood now", but in the context of Heimerdinger's rejection, it makes so much more sense.
Something I really liked exploring with through Viktor’s story is this character Singed from the game, he’s this mad scientist stereotype running around spraying poison all over the place, whoopdiedoo, right? But then here in Arcane, while we do see him do this science that ultimately does a fair amount of bad in the world, he’s portrayed with a level emotional intelligence that matches his scientific intellect and I really love that. And unlike Silco with Jinx, it’s not like he’s keeping Viktor close and having this near psychologically dependant relationship with him born of trauma that drives him to do these awful things, Singed is a really calm, collected and patient mentor figure to Viktor. Viktor eventually feels comfortable enough to entrust Singed with his life, despite being years estranged, Singed is eager to help him and cautions Viktor of the personal implications of what he’s doing, ”Love and legacy are the sacrifices we make for progress, that’s why I parted ways with Heimerdinger.”, he doesn’t push his views on Viktor at all, he really does warn Viktor that what he’s aiming to do would alienate him from his peers, even though Singed endorses his actions. And then in the finale you see this extra side to him that hints how they might develop his character next season, where he says he once had a daughter, he knocks Silco out so he won’t have to see Jinx in pain during the procedure, he warns him before that it would be very agonziing and that she may not want to through with it. And then in the last scene we see him clutching a locket with a picture of his presumably deceased daughter and it perhaps gives you this idea that he delves deep and possibly too far into the realm of genetic modification, life extension and medicine because she passed away and like Viktor he wants to help people, or as some people theorize he may even wish to bring his own daughter back to life as the cyborg Orianna. All of this to say, they really challenge the stereotype his character was originally framed as, and just having this really nuanced, 3-dimensional character taking a backseat to the others who still has this air of mystery around him without even feeling like a villain, it’s really interesting to me.
Singed probably juices himself up for a fight which is probably why he acts like a psycho when he gets summoned. Sort of makes me wonder if we're going to run into Dr. Mundo, the shimmer already turns people purple, all we need is someone to maintain their sanity and have the transformation become permanent for that person.
@@qckngdcks She was tripping balls, I can absolutely buy that she hallucinated him smiling. Also what else would he say? Lie and say it’s gonna be just fine? If he wanted to take revenge on a child for an accident, he also wouldn’t have helped her in the first place, nor would he have cautioned Silco against going through with the procedure because of how painful it would be, plus he sedates him because he understands as a father than he wouldn’t want to see his child in pain, and if he extends that kind of empathy to Silco, why would he enjoy torturing her? That doesn’t make sense for his character at all.
@@qckngdcks Dude, at this point you’re not even remembering the scene correctly, just stop. Silco came to him, demanded his help. Singed cautions him of what the procedure would entail for Jinx, that she might prefer to die instead. Silco insists on going through with it. Singed drugs him, saying ”Please understand this is for your own sanity. I too once had a daughter.” It’s really that simple, you’re reading this silly nonsense into it that clearly isn’t there.
@@qckngdcks You’re literally coming in here making silly, reductive interpretations and your excuse is that literally anything Singed says is meaningless and says nothing about his character. Remind me to never hire you to write a script, thank you.
There is a theory that Rio is Singed's daughter who died. He somehow preserved her soul/ghost in a host which is the mutation that must survive until he finds a way to build a new body for her. Furthermore Viktor could be the one building a mechanical body and she becomes the character Orianna, who is often called Ori which is an anagram of Rio + the picture Singed has in the last episode looks like her. Doesn't fit the game lore at all but would be a great new origin story :D
I think Rio is a TFT legend you can get, and yeah I agree this would be a cool story, but I think Rio in arcane is singed's discovery and experiments with shimmer. We see the plant shimmer might be originated from with the same color that Singed gives rio to extend his life, When Rio gets worse, the plants are ground up and pumped into her, making her look like she's taken shimmer. I think all the advancements with shimmer from how quickly the timetable of its discovery to mass production, to a perfected variant is possible because it's all the work that singed has put into Rio. But it would still be cool if Rio is his daughter, I can see it being possible with Warwick's origin story being related to singed as well
Wow I didn't even realize it but the entire boat scene foreshadows Victor choosing to pursue progress at all costs and neglect Sky to do it. I'm gonna have to rewatch this show because there are probably more scenes like this I missed out on.
Great video again. One thing I was surprised was not mentioned, was Viktor's choice to try to run as an adult next to boats. The symbolism here is perfect. The boat he couldn't keep up with as a kid is now replaced by real boats in the background, and Viktor outruns them. What a beautiful scene that was!
Once Viktor rejected Singed's "at all cost" mentality, he found Heimerdinger, who was the opposite. Yes he's a scientist and yes he's physically different from all those beautiful, smooth Piltover humans, but he's also cautious to a fault, aggressively shutting down any experiment that might jeopardize Piltover, or in the case of HexTech, merely reminds him of why he founded Piltover to begin with. And after years of following Heimerdinger's cautious, humanitarian approach, he found it failing him. Not ideologically, but personally, so he rushes back to his roots, to Singed, to the architect of Zaun.
I gotta say I really appreciate you replicating the looks of the characters you're reacting to in your videos. It shows how much you really loved the show and it really helps us connect with the characters you're reacting to on a deeper level.
I’m so excited to go back and watch Arcane with your insights in mind. There are so many little details I hadn’t realized the significance of, like Victor creating a boat that can travel so easily, but it quickly outrunning him. Or how Victor came around to Singed’s way of thinking, not just because he was dying, but because Heimerdinger’s caution is holding back his own experiment.
I'd love LOVE to see Jinx part 2. Mainly because I relate strongly to her trauma wise and just how we are as people. But I would also love a Victor full analysis . Anything you do however is really good.
Viktor knows his life has a time limit. And struggles with it growing up. I wander what that does to a person when they know they're life span is short. For Viktor i would say he tried his best to make due with what little time he had left and tried to do good. But I still wander how a person in real life would feel.
I can hear the passion in your voice, the beauty in your actions. The heart of a true artist in your craft. I will be keeping up with this incredible concept
Unpopular opinion here, but I'd like to see an analysis of Jayce. I think he would be an interesting one to examine and make predictions about given that he has good intentions, but literally every decision he makes ultimately blows up in his face. Literally, in at least 2 occasions. Plus there is the whole thing about him being forced into a position of responsibility and leadership that he is quite obviously unsuited for. I'd also like to see a video on Heimerdinger. He has a much longer lifespan than humans which gives him a more unique psychology than other characters and leaves some room for interpretation that I think could be interesting. Plus there is the whole thing about him being forced to face his failures.
You actually put to words the realization Viktor comes to as an adult really well. Really enjoyed the video, thank you. I'd love to listen to a full break down of Viktor's character.
I’d love to see more analysis of Viktor from your place of experience. Particularly his relationship with Jayce, or an overall look at their dynamic. Regardless, this series has been spectacular. Thank you!!
A fun little detail about Rio is that I notice her design is heavily inspired by salamanders, especially the axolotl, which are known for their regeneration of their limbs and tissue. So when they are referring to the mutation, it could be the regeneration mutation; which is what we see shimmer do, whether in small doses like with Vi, or in large doses creating hyper bulking monsters. Wild axolotl's are also incredibly endangered being only found in the a few lakes and channels of Mexico due to pollution, which we do also get a scene of from where Victor was playing. Maybe at one point there were multiple Rio's before the Piltover and Zaun were settled, but are now gone with maybe Rio being the last one.
This video has helped me realize my own source of social anxiety, makes me see that Viktor is probably the character I relate to the most out of the cast
Ok the way I knew it was over for me the moment she said look at his eyes, like, girl. I know I spent more than fifty hours crying over his goddamn eyes
I love Viktor, seriously my favorite character not only in the show but out of everything I've ever seen. I think his character development is so great, he really feels human with his actions.
I always enjoyed putting character depth into the people I played. To see character depth, development and honest human actions. The reactive part in all of us, when have we not been like Vi and possibly lashed out on a loved one or friend in the worst way, just because we were flooded with emotions and we just, react. Viktor felt to me, a piece of my loneliness depicted in a show. I wasn't born with a limp, but after sever abuse my a partner from 17-19 years old.. it hindered my physical interaction with people. I stopped being so athletic, stopped taking my dog for a walk, b/c I would be ashamed to tell people why I was limping so much. Then when people learn of my hard past and how recent it was.. they distance themselves. People don't like to see real pain, struggle, and loss in their face and feel helpless. So they run away, at least that's how I feel and how I perceive it. People just can't believe a pretty smile could hold so much trama and pain, when I'm just about to turn 23 on the 18th. I want friends I enjoy conversations, projects, activities, but people ask about my past, and I'm very honest. We have compulsive liars is there such thing as a compulsive truther? I like being honest, it just hurts when the truth scares people away from me. I'm not a shell of an abuse and S.A victim. Im a person that can have a lot of fun and happy conversations.
Singed. The easiest character to have made into a mustache twirling, cackling evil villain. Even he is treated like a Human Being. Even given moments of compassion, in his own way. The moment when we see Silco bring Jinx to Singed, we see Singed begin fulling a syringe with a chemical. We assume it's for Jinx's procedure, but no. He puts the syringe into Silco's neck. Because, as Singed previously warned, this procedure he would have to use to save Jinx's life is HELL. It's torturous. But he spares Silco that experience, even the choice to bear that burden. Which, we all know, Silco absolutely would have, but it would have been horrible for him. Singed is the living example of Science Without Limits, while still remembering that Science has a purpose. Singed isn't doing these things just to do them. He's discovering and refining ideas and creating things faster and better than anyone else can. It's only that that advancement has prices to pay. And Singed is strong enough or numb enough (or both) to pay them.
I mean, this portion of the series captured perfectly how disabled people feel and function especially growing up. Combined with very high intelligence and ability to invent, this is a "story arc" that happens in real life more than common people realise. The thing about Arcane is that I grew to love the most damaged characters, for I think they are the most ineresting, and it is not hard to relate to them, even if two of those characters are technically villans ( Jinx, Silco).
i truly loved viktor he was one of my fav characters in the show eventho he was obsessed with his work to the point he lost touch with reality he really seemed like such a sweet person
the fact that the singed we see in arcane is the most human SInged ever was is kinda creepy. They already teased that Vander will become Warwick and as most of us know, Singed created Warwick in a verry brutal way. There he also didnt care if Vander is in Pain or will Survive it as long as his experiment works. He rly created one of the most dangerous monsters of Zhaun, becuase he was able to do so. That rly shows to me that SInged has no respect for life in any form as long as it is for his project.
@Yari Vickiraytive Pantoja Never looked at it that way. The Rio theory even supports the point that singed is willing to do whatever it takes for his projects and dreams. Rio seams to be in great pain and suffering and I would guess being resurrected is kinda painful too. Would be cool to know if he always did everything to get his result or if he started to fight for his achievements after his daughter died. So if rio is a way to bring back his daughter or keep something of her alive, that he maybe then started to do what needs to be done just to keep her alive. Then his brutality would be a weird kind of lovey

That man Viktor is god like
I hated that scene, but not because it's bad, because it develops its characters in such a way, it makes you have Jayce and Mel. But again, Mel and Jayce both have different stories, written in their own way. The thing that makes Arcane so good, it's that all characters are written in their own way, and have their own arcs, which leads to liking them more.
Viktor was always one of the most real characters in League, as outlandish as his concept was. Arcane made him even better
Ironic, how little human there is left while his humanity only grows.
For some reason, my favorite character, even lore wise, was the old Swain haha
That’s kinda why I want Seraphine to be in arcane her character could have been good if they wrote the lore better I think arcane can change that
@@eiffiedarkness649 I'm mainly sad that her design just doesn't fit League one but, it could be fitting with making her a singer that fights to free skaters kind and actually could look like she is from Piltover but.... No
@@kianbrusselbach6106 I’m hoping that they give her some connection to jinx. They’re both similar ages and seraphine came from zaun. it makes sense that little powder would be curious about the pink haired girl that hardly leaves her house.
Glad someone else heard it. I have mild hearing loss and it took me like 3 watches of that scene to hear it

I think Singed is a sociopath, and that kind of compassion is beyond him
Singed is not demonstrating sociopathy.
Note how Viktor called Rio by name and Singed calls Rio "the mutation".
This alone gives a hint on how different they where thinking about this adorable creature.
Every word has weight in this series. That´s why I love it!
Great video by the way! :)
I hope this isn´t the last time you talked about Viktor on this channel.
Edit:
Singed gave this creature the name Rio.

Yay happy you noticed

Tysm for covering Viktor, he’s such an amazingly written character and he definitely stole the show for me. I cant wait to see more of him in season 2

The scenes with Singed and Rio also embrace the theme that is brought to bear with Ekko. It’s not enough to survive, things need to live.
He has no empathy, an actual psychopath/sociopath. He understands the concept of suffering but doesn't care to avoid it.
I will like to point out that Singed did have anesthetic. Thing is, he used it on Silco to knock him out vs using it on Jinx to ease her pain during the procedure. That small detail alone showed us that Singed is an extremely sadistic character.
i wonder if we'll see his atrocities later in the show, and how far the show will go overall

Her little giggle when she’s talking about Singed in possessive form is so adorable. My heart melted
1000% here for these Arcane breakdowns.
I'm not sure I've ever been so succinctly convinced by the emotive-ness (is that a word?) of animated expression as I was while watching Arcane!
well said thanks for this breakdown
I have two questions about Viktor. The first being, why did he experiment on himself on episode 8 without shimmer and second why did he never comment on the fact that Heimerdinger is missing from the council?
I would love the full breakdown of Victor. He's my favorite character tied with Powder/Jinx.
@@rociopaoloni5080 oh thank god they can be killed, it was bothering me that they couldnt be killed, while watching arcane and heimerdinger says he is 300y.o i was thinking
..OMG how does he not die, didnt he meet any danger in his life, no one tried to kill him? Like jeez
@@Homelanderwasrighthe chose not to go on summoner's rift 😅
There is also a parallel I don't see people talking about. When Viktor asked Singed "You did this?" It was a direct parallel and opposite to Vi's comment to Powder on episode 3.
I love Viktor, he's one of my fav characters and he delivered my favorite line of the whole show
"We lost our dream...
You should do more of adult Viktor! He’s got so much!
If someone like her could also work on arcane, the show would become like 100% more emotional and deeper in a good way.
Pretty sure they got people like her on the team otherwise all that nuance wouldn't be in there.
@@Todesnuss I mean hey we never know so you might be right, or maybe their creativity is on point :o
@@Kariegoz they’re SUPPOSED to be slightly modelled after them, not the exact same character. there are no plot holes whatsoever
So good.
Viktor is such a fascinating character. Thank you for offering these insights to how he came to be in his childhood!
For Viktor, he initially sought to make all his inventions 'for the people' but when Heimer rejected his work for being too dangerous without considering his capacity to make things works, it brought him right back to Singed, realizing the old man's mindset was something he should have considered all along.
well said
Is Orianna his daughter though? Last time I checked Orianna's father isn't Singed nor it was teased that was the case. It was more like those artisan of Piltover that like to make gadgets and was a very good one. Something changed?
@@rociopaoloni5080 I do believe that it has been a thought circled around - that Orianna is Singed's daughter. :0 Her lore has been changed throughout the year.
Arcane is a series about kindred spirits seeing themselves in the young, for better or worse.
Yay =)
8:04
Singed: You want to help?
Victor: *Eyes wide, nods head
I am projecting, yes.
There are parallels, yes.
Loving how ur dressing up as the characters ..
"Good friends" joke made my day every time 😆
I think everyone is waiting for Jinx part 2. Jinx is probably the most emotionally disturbed character of the whole Arcane series and seeing another video about her will be super exciting.
Sooooo happy you appreciated the "good friend" comment you are the first to mention it =P
This is a fantastic series. I love the analyses and cosplays, and I'll be sad when the project is over.
I have a lot to cover so it will be a while
Something I really liked exploring with through Viktor’s story is this character Singed from the game, he’s this mad scientist stereotype running around spraying poison all over the place, whoopdiedoo, right?
I too once had a daughter.”
It’s really that simple, you’re reading this silly nonsense into it that clearly isn’t there.
@@qckngdcks You’re ignoring literally everything he says, smartass…
That would be sick!
Woah, I love your take!
Ah yes, the old tucker routine.
That makes no sense
1:55 that girl is actually Sky who was Victors friend who died to the hextech cube thing. You can hear her name being called.
yes It is
Great video again.
One thing I was surprised was not mentioned, was Viktor's choice to try to run as an adult next to boats. The symbolism here is perfect. The boat he couldn't keep up with as a kid is now replaced by real boats in the background, and Viktor outruns them.
What a beautiful scene that was!
Oh yes that will happen when i do Viktor. one of my fav scenes
It shows how much you really loved the show and it really helps us connect with the characters you're reacting to on a deeper level.
why thanks i am happy my efforts are appreciated
Her so effortlessly calling Singed by name in this flashback almost made me forget about how she first pronounced "Vi"
I’m so excited to go back and watch Arcane with your insights in mind. There are so many little details I hadn’t realized the significance of, like Victor creating a boat that can travel so easily, but it quickly outrunning him. Or how Victor came around to Singed’s way of thinking, not just because he was dying, but because Heimerdinger’s caution is holding back his own experiment.
thanks !!
Pleaaasseee do jayvik. I think the dynamic between these two is kinda unique and fascinating
In one scene, Viktor is running after his little boat. In another scene, Viktor is running beside the river/sea, leaving big boats behind him
I can hear the passion in your voice, the beauty in your actions. The heart of a true artist in your craft. I will be keeping up with this incredible concept
I am very touched by your words thank you for taking the time to let me know.
Maybe at one point there were multiple Rio's before the Piltover and Zaun were settled, but are now gone with maybe Rio being the last one.
thank you for this information
This video has helped me realize my own source of social anxiety, makes me see that Viktor is probably the character I relate to the most out of the cast
Ok the way I knew it was over for me the moment she said look at his eyes, like, girl. I know I spent more than fifty hours crying over his goddamn eyes
Viktor and Jayce both saved eachother from suicide...what a strong friendship!
So beautiful
I think Viktor is one of those characters that tend self destruct in an almost conscious level.
I love Georgia for the way she talks, makes me feel at home and comfortable
i truly loved viktor he was one of my fav characters in the show eventho he was obsessed with his work to the point he lost touch with reality he really seemed like such a sweet person
the fact that the singed we see in arcane is the most human SInged ever was is kinda creepy.
"We do what we must, because we can."
