I was so confused before, everyone wanted me to become so many things, but since my childhood, I don't know I always had song writer in my head but never said that out, and then I left the thought . And again and again it kept coming , now I'm realising that God wants me to write songs about him ..... I am so glad now I know what I want to be and am so grateful.
Love it! Worship is definitely more challenging than it seems. It’s definitely got to come from a genuine place. And actually leading worship or having experience leading worship at a church and learning how the room responds to certain songs I think is crucial. You start to get a feel for what works well and what doesn’t. Awesome video Seth!
I agree! Ive played guitar and written poetry since 15 years old The last 5 years I truly amplified my playing with joining as lead guitar in my church worship team. But Ben trying to write a worship song the last year and definitely mote challenging than I had originally conceived! Cheers/ Blessings
Keep melodies accessible Use repetition It should feel better every time it's sung Verse/Chorus/Bridge variate Use easy key progressions Reflects biblical truth Putting words in people's mouth Register with CCLI
Thanks so much for your advise. I really appreciate what you said about the importance of scriptural truth. Our choir and praise teams have to add or take away words to make the song line up with scripture correctly. Thanks a million, may the Lord bless you brother.
Oh Lord, thank you so much for your advice. I needed to hear this and I wrote some notes to help because I do want to write songs of worship, but I just didn't the time and effort to do it because I have been super confident on my talent and all the things that God has truly blessed me with but yet I didn't do it because I was just lazy and not wanting to. This has helped me a lot and I just digested all of this to help me write songs this year in 2023. Thank you.
Thank you so much my brother! Holy Spirit will also help us,even in the most practical ways. But your tips are so very helpful Seth! Thank you for teaching us!!
Thanks for sharing your ideas on writing christian songs. You are a true inspiration to help other christians to be an encouragement and a blessing as your advise and ideas here will help someone to write a song who will in due time bless or encourage someone who might go through a tough time and that song that you helped someone to write will unknowingly help that person through that trial and be a blessing. God richly bless you!!!
I wrote this song, but I’m not sure of it gives the message I want it to. Can you help me? Often times we ignore the calls And we don’t do what we should at all Often times we tend to stray Farther, farther, farther each day But then we open open that magic book And we feel compelled to take a look And suddenly suddenly we see That God still cares God still knows who I am And even when I fail He draws me closer to the lamb For I am His And He is mine And I will live Him For the rest of my life God still cares
Nice explanation! When you make it explicit that repétition is a key I can understand why after 2 or 3 minutes I want the worship to be over. I find the infinite repetition very annoying. I also find that every (or the majority of) worship songs have the very same crescendo structure. When I listen to 1h of this I feel like I am trapped in the same repetitive song. My wife loves it and many people love this style. It's just not for me.
I am first a songwriter. My challenge is the lyrics. I guess I haven't gone through any sort of classes on professional song writing as they seem to come easily but the need for newness or a sense of versatility in the content of the song is where I need help with. What do I do?
I appreciate the information here. I guess I always thought the main ingredient of worship music was authentic worship. Just heartfelt moments spent in the presence of God in prayer or in His Word. This video seems so formulaic. 🤷🏾♀️ That being said, I think there may be a difference between worship music and "hit" worship music. I love the way the Getty's write. They seem to embody the Word through their music. But preferences are just preferences, so...
the main ingredient is a humble loving heart toward God and agreeing with His Word. this video is formulaic and not that it's bad(because music is still applicable to theory) but don't let this be what defines worship writing. even big worship artists like Elevation or Maverick City go outside of this and we both know there's tons of lesser known worshippers that are outside of this
I have a problem with the current CCLI. They are presently secular owned and operated, which infers a myriad of bad things. Any other suggestions as a replacement for CCLI?
I wrote lyrics because I’m a poet. I have written a few songs BUT putting music to it is not easy. I don’t know how to put music to my lyrics. Any easy ideas. I play uke and easy guitar. Ty
So what if you feel you have songs that are written, but don't know how or know people to help record them? Where would I start to learn how to record or at least have a recording that isn't just on my phone. ❤❤ I have learned a little from watching videos, but to buy the equipment to do, and I am not sure if I could. Thank you for the info.
It is a huge responsibility. Glad you commented on this. The theology has to be 💯, which is often not the case in many modern worship songs. We are big believers in it but it’s got to be done right
I am "Older" like 59 years old. I have been a song writer since my 20s. I have written songs for Progressive Rock bands all during the 90s. But my own style is not progressive rock. When I write a song and don't tell anyone who wrote it they like it. When they hear it's one I wrote they say. "Oh that sounds so 80s" So how do you write a song that doesn't sound 80s? I listen to all the modern worship like Red Rocks, Elevation, Church of The City, etc...And I thought my songs were very similar sounding. Is there a certain chord or song structure that is different from "The 80s"???
@@OfficialFCMusic I was using Keyboards with a Pad layer/Ballad Stack, and Bass Guitar, Acoustic and a couple electrics with mild distortion. And a fairly modern sounding drum track from a funk setting. kinda in a tempo like 68
From 3:32 to 3:40 is exactly why Christian music lacks creativity nowadays. It's also the same reason why almost every song in CCM is the same. They are milking that formula for every last cent it's worth. The CCM industry is just like every other industry, it's money driven first and foremost. Which is why, if new and upcoming artists don't sound like hillsong, bethel, Chris tomlin, Jesus culture, etc. They won't make it to the radio. Disclaimer, I like listening to these guys I mentioned. I just don't think they are the gold standard for what worship music and ccm should sound like. That decision is made by the industry and certainly NOT by GOD.
Hi there! One of the best ways to learn the different tendencies of genres is to go and listen intently to the most successful songs in that category. So in this case, I would listen to the top gospel songs and listen very carefully to their rhyme schemes - then use it as inspiration for your songs.! We have to study to continue to grow better!!
Seth I want to use already written material as a cover but change the genre it was written in and present it as a demo for my own after purchasing the mechanical license for said song. Next take and R and B song change the lyrics but keep the melody but add my own accessories. For example I went to Harry Fox Agency purchased the license to Alicia Keys "No One" changed most of the lyrics (after thousands of edits) including the title. How can I present the demo to you or someone else? Need input on this matter please.
Do you know anyone who wants words to songs I was told I should do something more with my poetry than just leave it in a book. I think a lot of it needs to be sung. Do you know anyone that would pay for it?

Often times we ignore the calls
And we don’t do what we should at all
Often times we tend to stray
Farther, farther, farther each day
But then we open open that magic book
And we feel compelled to take a look
And suddenly suddenly we see

For the rest of my life

Use the same tired old four chords and repeat the same line over and over. Who knew?
The critique I and many have about this kind of music IS the things he said, its too simple, too repetitive.. People can handlemore than that
No. Drop the vain repetitions, which I believe is not totally removed from Matthew 6 regarding vain prayers.
thanks for sharing!
remember that just because there's repetition doesnt mean its vain
I can’t believe he admits so much of what is wrong with CCM…. The shallow droning and often heretical (Hillsong) lyrics of dollar-driven intent.
Blimey cow did it first.
Do you know anyone who wants words to songs I was told I should do something more with my poetry than just leave it in a book. I think a lot of it needs to be sung. Do you know anyone that would pay for it?
That’s whTs wrong with this genre
It’s dumbed down. And really just cloned from every other song
This modern "praise and worship" music is very man centered and unbiblical.
talks about worship songs, then mentions the two most dangerous groups as positive reference. mmm....
mistitled. maybe "tips when writing a worship song"?
