Play in the match began on March 25 and ended on April 5. In the first game Kostic resorted to the Petroff's Defense and a long-drawn-out battle for position ensued, which, after fifty-one moves, was adjourned until the following Monday. The position then had all the appearance of a draw, but Capablanca, with the infinite patience that characterizes his at all times simple style, applied himself to the task of working out a win, and in this he was successful upon resumption of play. In the meantime, the second game, opened by Kostic with an Italian Game, had been decided in one session in favor of Capablanca, who accepted the gift of a Pawn and won expeditiously after all of the pieces, had been exchanged.

5:27 -- The tepid g3 is where Kostić's lack-of-awareness (to Capablanca's queen-side tactic) is apparent. The easiest defense of the weak b-pawn is Nc2 followed by Nb4, after which the b-pawn is hidden behind the knight, and the only way Capablanca could dislodge it is by trading his dark-square bishop away. (After Nc2, Rb6, Nb4, Black is only very slightly better in a drawish position.) For the next several moves (such as at 5:57 and even later at 7:57 via knight captures instead of the played rook captures), Kostić still had the opportunity to play Nc2, lock down that side, and free up his rooks. Instead, his poor, ill-used knight became the centerpiece of his opponent's winning maneuvers.
11:20 -- Kf3 works just as well as Kf1 (the position will be identical after the pieces are exchanged, with the king capturing on f2, and while it seems like a king on f3 would be exposed to the other rook swinging over, there's no time because the king-adjacent bishop is undefended).

This is game #27 of "Capablanca's Best Chess Endings." This is another example of strong players playing the best moves in a drawn game. Capablanca puts them in increasingly difficult positions until they blunder.

Capablanca has taught me how important the endgame is. To find the slightest advantage in the beginning and trade pieces to an end game. Then use my greater knowledge of endgame to win. It has really helped my play a lot.
Take a look at the book "From the Opening Into the Endgame" by Edmar Mednis.
Oh, and also "From the Middlegame Into the Endgame", also by Edmar Mednis.
This game was drawn almost the entire way until white blundered at the very end. Capablanca would mostly fatigue his opponents because he refused to settled for anything but a win. I believe his true genius was transitioning small advantages into the end games that he preferred. I'm reading "Capablanca's Best Chess Endings" and its not usual for his games to be riddled with errors from both players. Although, for the most part, Capablanca makes less errors or less serious errors than his opponents.
Kostic got beaten so badly he didn't even get a colorized photo upgrade. Colorized photos are for closers only. Put. That. Colorized. Photo. Down.

Thank you again for the excellent analysis... but also the occasional sidebar commentary and exploration of hypothetical lines. Listening, learning, and studying here is definitely improving my game.
Brilliant opening play by Capa leaves Kostic in a hapless , hopeless position.
It's amazing how his middle game always leads to him being in a driver's seat for the end game, which he plays impeccably

At 8:22 Kostic’s knight to D1 maneuver opened up an attack on the E6 pawn and Casablanca moved his bishop so that the roll would protect it

At 16:02 the more precise idea would be Rf7, I believe.
Where follows:
a4 (forced) Kxa4 Rc2 Kb3 Rd2 Rf6 and white is in Zugzwang and will lose a piece and the game.
In the end instead of kf1 Kf3 was more suitable. Black had to.move the boshop or defend or exchange right away. If black goes bh4 than white can play rook e5 and thhan Rf5 a nice square

You said that there is no reason to wait to trade pieces. It is still winning, but is it not stronger to play 1... Rf7, simply forcing white to make a move? It seems to me like a complete zugzwang. Best response I could find is 2. Nh1, followed by 2... Rxf1 3. Nxg3 Rxe2+ 4. Kxe2 Rb1, where black is up an exchange and still completely winning.
After writing this, I realized that white might be able to generate a tiny amount of counterplay with the knight and that there's no reason to allow it.
Capa's games are pure Mozart concertos and Carlsen's undiluted Bruckner symphonies.

At 16:00, tell me if i am wrong but there might be is a reason to wait longer , because the rook cannot go on c2 anymore, and as you said the rook cannot go on d2 either (because of Ke2 Bf4 Kxd4 Rxf2 Rxf2 Rxf2 ("captures captures captures") and you're up a rook with check). So if you play after Re2 Rf8 for example this is the real monster zugzwang :)

It's not gonna be an 8 game match. Because Capablanca literally destroyed Kostic in 5 games. Yes.. such a score already existed in those times. Capabalanca did to Kostic what Fischer did to Larsen and Taimanov..

All he needed was a tiny edge...Carlsen is spectacular too, of course.. But did you know the Cuban world champion has the best win loss draw ratio in history of chess ??? 11:13 why not King D1?, and if the knight is captured you pin the piece with the rook from e1. im new in chess btw.
The knight will still be pinned from the bishop to the white rook behind.....so black jus brings the other rook calmly and attacks again......then white basically would have wasted a tempo cause he has to bring his king again into the defence and get pinned.........
Hey guys, long time agadmator viewer. I've seen 80% of all agads content, but the Capablanca series started out with unimpressive games, so I've avoided the entire series but have watched all other uploads. I'd like to watch the masterfulgames, but skip over the simplistic beginner games. Anyone have advice on where to start?

why at 11min50, is kf3 not possible? I feel this move is more a drawing move. In your system, at 14min47 you can move your knight e3 or h3.
Spend some time and work it out. Use an engine if you have.

Mr Kostic was an impressive player indeed but, Capablanca was a genius, it makes a big difference! Unfortunately for Mr. Kostic he wasn't a match for Capablanca.

it's a pawn you cant move, because it will be captured and the pawn that captures it will become a passed pawn

Because Capablanca won 4 matches so currently the score 4-0. If Capablanca wins the 5th match also then after those 5 rounds 3 rounds will be left. Even if Kostiic wins all those 3 rounds Capablanca will be the winner. So basically, After this 4th game, Capablanca only needs to win or draw 1 game to win the Match.
Wouldn't it be a 9 game match in that case? If its 4-4 there would need to be a tiebreaker

@@01MetalMaster Yes, It will be if we'll get the result of 4-4 but for that Kostic needs to Win all 4 games. Capablanca just needs 1 win or 1 draw to win the match out of the 4 rounds.
Seems like Capablanc just squeezed Kostic's position until there were no sensible moves left...

I think when you get your King to b3 there's even a better move than trading everything. Why not just play a waiting move like Rf7? The king now protects c2 so the rook cant go there even there :D

Oissev Onos Thank you for your comment! Whenever I see a top level game I feel like I understand what’s going on until I’m in a seemingly drawish middle game and a quiet move happens. Are top level chess players even mortal?? Haha. Also Lasker was an extremely resourceful player, I’ve shown my students a lot of his games.

He had many, many special games but the 1918 Marshall-Capablanca game in which he accepted and overcame the Marshall gambit over the board towers over the rest. I don't know if anyone else could have pulled that off.

after Bh4 black's other rook will come to b6 f6 so definitely Kf1 already looks better

@@puremercury My bad, actually you dont need to move the bishop. Just trade everything and the White King will be in the second rank so the Rook can capture b2 with a check, and pick up all the pawn chains. The goal of the variation is not just winning or equalizing trades but also not leaving the king on the second rank. ..Kf3, Bxf2 Rxf2, Rxf2 Kxf2, Rxb2 Kf1, Rc2 and black is completely winning if not losing (nice quote, agad!)

At 16:00 if black played rook f7, white would’ve been in true zugzwang, because any move he could make would lose the game and if he could pass his turn the game might end up in a draw. Don’t know why I commented this, I guess I just like zugzwang. :)

It does. The bishop prevents the king from going to g2 because it's protecting the h2 square for the rook

If the Bishop is sacrificed on a3 then taking the Bishop with the Rook will get you a decent game
You take a rook with a rook. Then pawn takes rook, you take another rook and end up being exchange up. More than a decent game for black, I'd say.

If you only watch chess games just to know the outcome maybe you shouldn't look at a 100 years old games, i think live games coverage at Twitch chess is good for you but the analysis wont be on spot and you dont gain any experience by watching it..

@@filipsekuloski9575 again, analysis. the purpose of watching a chess game analysis is to get better at chess. if you want to just know the game for fun, i think there are many chess channels that just show the game without thorough analysis. by the way, usually agadmator puts the winner's face in the title (or the notable person that is in the match, but mostly the winner) so you've already got a spoiler if you stick that mindset of watching chess games
