Living by the genuine medieval city wall is probably something special. Everyday you've got reminded of the past events. Few years ago I visited Lucca in Italy, and I was stunned by the contrast of such great example of history being just a part of a day-to-day life.
Why did the defenders fight in front of the wall instead from on top of it? Did the town not trust the peasants enough to let them in? It seems like a waste to build such strong walls and then not use them. Especially since it was a port town and with no naval blockade it ought to have been easy to last through a siege.
@Targaryen Dynasty if that were the case the Yeomen would've aided Valdemar's attempts to storm the city so the thirst for plunder would have been exhausted in the wealthy Visby and not in the villages and farms of the Swedes
@@NotUnymous There would be 2000 more men though, a lot less suffering families. Think how all those men dying would have affected the harvest, fishing etc. What did they end up losing by coming under the Danes? Nothing really, just a different person to pay the tax to.

I saw a video quite some time ago about this battle. Several mass graves of the Gutes militia were found and excavated. Many of the remains showed numerous and deep wounds to the bones, especially the legs. It looked like the Danish soldiers would slash at the legs of the Gutes, since they had little to no armour there. Then after they were brought down, the poor souls were mercilessly hacked to death. The conclusion was it was a one sided butchery rather than a real battle.

Better than most, worse than some. The Danish language can be hard to get for foreigners, especially because we are inconsistent with silent letters. For example "Gerhard" at 0:47 we wouldn't pronounce it "Jerrard" like it sounds, but rather "Ger-hard" with a hard G and H rather than a J sound like in Jerry and a silent H. Hi, I really like this stuff. Good design, interesting info - well done! More about Scandinavia for sure. It would be cool to see something about the epic sea-battle of Lepanto outside Greece in 1571 - a combined force of Europeans vs. the invading Ottoman Empire. ...and also something about Cortez or Pizarro perhaps? The Renaissance period is very interesting, since there was a combination of armoured soldiers with early firearms - sort of like a transition from medieval times to the modern age. Very cool. Keep going 'BazBattles'!
Don't mind the comments whining about this battle not being "important" enough, this is extraordinary work here. Visby may not be a particularly big battle but the context, background and consequences is of great intrigue to any medieval historian, not to mention the battlefield of Visby stands out as one of the best preserved of all time, and as a result is of great archaeological importance. All of their videos seem to be about medieval and ancient battles, while that formation developed in the early modern period. However, if they want to venture into it, it would be very cool. Personally I would recomend battle of Klushino (Kłuszyn) in 1610. It's not as famous as Vienna, but it was absolutely insane, and the led up to it was very interesting to.
They won the battle but lost the war. It does put things in an awkward state, though - Valdemar stormed upon an island of peasants for personal gain. Unlike in fantasy, the well-armored troops won over the scrappy underdogs.
So you mean that the battle of Lena, the battle of Brunkeberg, the march over the Belts and the battle of Lund, just to name a few, was just one battle? I had no idea! Your historical knowledge is truly remarkable!
DIALECTIC BOOGALOO I though the swedes onwned you pretty badly, considering they're a huge country, only slightly smaller than Texas and in possession of former Danish heartland; while Denmark is basically about the size of Lichtenstein?
+hamstsorkxxor The only time Denmark actually "controlled" (parts of) Sweden was in the Kalmar union. They didn't conquer anything, they just got it for free, which we swedes didn't like and we recked them and gained independence. Sweden has completely crushed Denmark once, and we were gonna take the whole country, but the Netherlands didn't want us to so we only got Skåneland instead, which is modern day southern Sweden. Gustavus Adolphus also had plans to take Denmark. If only it wasn't for his new horse that ran straight into the enemy lines with him on its back.
Yeah, this battle was insanely one-sided. While there were some well-equipped troops in the Gutnish army it was, overall, very poorly armed and armored. And, as was pointed out in the video, many troops were too old or young, and some were crippled. By contrast Valdemar's army, while not huge, was extraordinarily well-armed, -armored, and -experienced. Valdemar basically compensated for his army's small size by making sure it was the best small army possible.
I do like to show some less known battles too, even at the expense of lower viewership. Otherwise, it would look like all solid armies were stomped by peasants all the time, with underdogs winning 80% of all battles.
It was a battle - real texts from the period states that the Gutes charged the Danish army and that they had ancient armor and ancient swords at their disposal. Think of the Norsemen armies - mostly made up of farmers and peasants with some elite warriors. Now, this army had no warriors - but some of the peasants had outdated gear used by their forefathers in viking times. They stood no chance against a modeln army though. And the cavalry spelled their doom - i've read it attacked their flanks.
It might have been slightly outdated equipment, since plate armour was the new kid on the bloc... But it wasen't surely viking age old timey equipment. Scandinavian peasant militias was generally very well equipped during the medieval period, since Leidangr laws left over from the dark ages required them to be so.
Johansson Interesting that it is of the few examples we see a much better force fight another one and get recorded. Also, mass graves and no looting of the recently slaughtered, nor of the graves, it allows us to see which kind of people were fighting then, it’s not so often that you find so much bodies, and that they kept their equipment which is an excellent insight on poor man's equipment of which we have few surviving examples.
He killed about 3000 people for his own personal advancement just in this one battle alone - not even soldiers, but farmers who wanted to be left alone. Go ahead and tether your "made X great again" sentiment to it - that's all it means, aggrandizement at the cost of another.
@@roguishpaladin Own personal gain? bitch please he was doing it in the best interrests of the danish people. You swedes are as bad losers as they come. Sweden has done similar terrible things in the past, get off your high horse. You lost the battle, accept it.
@@ElectroIsMyReligion We swedes are losers? Who owns Gotland and Skåne today? That's right, SWEDEN. But sure keep thinking you danes are victorious in everything because you killed alot of poorly equipped peasents in the medieval age.
Samuel Skogqvist It did never say you were losers per se, merely that you clearly still were whining and moaning over the loss at the Battle of Visby. You’re acting as a sore loser not a loser. Listen the Swedish army killed loads of defenseless civilians when they sieged Copenhagen in 1659. War is never fair, it’s a brutal game of dominance and power. Keeping score of the numerous wars/battles between our two nations is Sweden the victor, you’ve won more of the wars than us, but I’m not being salty and bitter about something that happenef +500 years ago. It was a different time (literally the dark Middle Ages ffs) all of the major European powers at time committed atrocities - including Sweden. Quit complaining and move on.
Great Vid! I remember i read a children novel centering about this conflict. I was quite shocked as the main protagonist and his entire family got massacred in front of the gates in the final pages
Fun fact! “Atterdag” his title is meant as a celebration of the fact that his reign made it past the black death as “Atterdag” basically means “Another dawn”

Finally an episode about stuff I can relate to, Friesland (mentioned in the beginning) and hanze, hanzestêd (city with hanseatic tradingrights) which were in the Netherlands as well.
Another factor of the vital economic and strategic interest in Gotland is it's vast abundance of sandstone. Most castles, if not all, in sweden and denmark are built by sandstone from Gotland. Some in central europe too, most likely, although Switzerland's got some too (which we now use to restore/maintain our castles in northern europe).
I've been watching this channel for quite a bit. I must say, it's much more enjoyable every time I come back. Just carry on, mate. I was also curious about the animation. What do you guys use to create these battles? I wanted to recreate some battles personally, so I was curious.
Battle of Myeongryang - a sea battle between Japan and combined Korean and Chinese forces. The Korean-led coalition navy, though vastly outnumbered, won the battle by making use of changing currents to lure the Japanese navy into a bottleneck from which they could not escape. It would be great to see you do an episode about that.

Channel and videos are seriously good. Look forward to them everyday! Keep up the good work!
If Denmark doesn't win I will question humanity
They won the battle but lost the war. It does put things in an awkward state, though - Valdemar stormed upon an island of peasants for personal gain. Unlike in fantasy, the well-armored troops won over the scrappy underdogs.
Great job as always
You gotta do a video on one of the battles where we swedes recked the danes, too.
the battle*
fixed that for you
So you mean that the battle of Lena, the battle of Brunkeberg, the march over the Belts and the battle of Lund, just to name a few, was just one battle? I had no idea! Your historical knowledge is truly remarkable!
DIALECTIC BOOGALOO
I though the swedes onwned you pretty badly, considering they're a huge country, only slightly smaller than Texas and in possession of former Danish heartland; while Denmark is basically about the size of Lichtenstein?
+hamstsorkxxor The only time Denmark actually "controlled" (parts of) Sweden was in the Kalmar union. They didn't conquer anything, they just got it for free, which we swedes didn't like and we recked them and gained independence.
Sweden has completely crushed Denmark once, and we were gonna take the whole country, but the Netherlands didn't want us to so we only got Skåneland instead, which is modern day southern Sweden.
Gustavus Adolphus also had plans to take Denmark. If only it wasn't for his new horse that ran straight into the enemy lines with him on its back.
Vi skal nok få hævn.
Really like your channel, cant wait for more medieval battles.
Who heard voldemort instead of valdemar? xD
jujux I did :/
He-who-should-not-be-mentioned-with-name*
Bazbattles, I love your great video quality!
I wouldn't be surprised if your channel will go viral soon!
Battle of Visby? more like the slaughter at Visby.
I really hope you make the whole battles of this war, because i am finding it too interesting.
And im liking a lot. Keep up the good work! :D
Kind of anticlimactic tbh. A 'veni, vidi, vici' type of scenario.
I do like to show some less known battles too, even at the expense of lower viewership. Otherwise, it would look like all solid armies were stomped by peasants all the time, with underdogs winning 80% of all battles.
BazBattles I wanna thank you for showing this, never knew of battles in this period!
BazBattles thanks for not showing famous battles just for views
I support your choice of battles Baz!
Then you didn't notice the easter egg , Bro.
great video. absolutely love the map work and narrator.
Was this even a battle?
Ricky Spanish I don't think the battle itself was of much interest, it's the effect it had that makes it notable.
it was just such a slaughter.
Ricky Spanish Yeah, I agree. But that doesn't change the affect it had.
Wow this was awesome thank you!
do more videos this dude. your voice is suave and sexy.
Oh my...
He hired a voice actor. His early videos got shat on because he has a thick accent
Viper8797 some african guy did one. it sounded shit.
The guy narrating now is African. Just saying
Dan Boud no hes not..
Really good video. Can´t wait to see the next one. Quality is so good!
How is this a interesting battle, it's just a slaughter of peasants.
Johansson der ist auch der Ikonen jojjkķ
Great work! Love your videos!
Valdemar made Denmark great again
Quit complaining and move on.
this is some great historical information. LOVE IT.
Just discovered your channel. Brilliant stuff. You have a new subscriber.
Hi
Can you do a battle at Sisak June 23rd 1593

Great Vid! I remember i read a children novel centering about this conflict. I was quite shocked as the main protagonist and his entire family got massacred in front of the gates in the final pages

Fun fact!
“Atterdag” his title is meant as a celebration of the fact that his reign made it past the black death as “Atterdag” basically means “Another dawn”
top 10 channel on yt!!!!!!!!!!!! keep up the good work
pleasant narration, quality content
As always very interesting and well done!
I'd love to see some Napoleonic wars' battles (I love Austerlitz). I also love that you present battles I never heard/cared much about like Visby. Would love to see some more battles from other parts of the world (Klushino for instance).
Just now learning about this battle.
Really cool/ macabre archaeological remains. 👍
I love these videos
I would love to see all historical conflicts explained with such detail, even though the work would be monumental to explain the military campaigns.
great channel, would love if you posted more commonly
Better not as often, than not as awesome! :)
Would love to post more frequently too, and striving to do so. There are tons of interesting events just waiting to be covered.
Looking forward to it @BazBattles =)
reaally well done!
Piece of art!
Amazing channel! Keep up the good work! :D
Extra history did a series on it, and the Admiral in charge of the joint fleet. The man is now hailed as the martial lord of Loyalty due to his action leading up to that pivotal battle
