To clarify, Brites, the breadmaker woman from Aljubarrota killed the spanish men not with a digging shovel, but with a large wooden paddle for making bread, similar to what is used nowadays to handle pizzas in large ovens. Because of the portuguese word being "pá" for both utensils, this minor mixup is completely understandable.

Its all good Baz, it's incredibly minor, and understandable in a non Portuguese speaking context. In no way did it make the video bad because of it, don't beat yourself over it.

      @AlternateTab00 6 лет назад +61

BazBattles don't worry. It's a small mistake due to "mistranslation". Even though that story is a myth I saw a story in Aljubarrota telling an alternative story. Upon spaniards entering her bakery looking for soldiers or trying to flee after battle (this part is unknown) she told them to enter an oven that fitted a few. She closed the hatch (that can be locked from the outside) then she then lighted up some wood and managed to stick it inside by small openings (used to heat up the oven) like that she cooked the soldiers inside that could not exit due the hatch was closed. Honestly I believe more this story.

Men i don't think you know us you must be Brasilian or something, if you are, i recomend to watch Imperios AD channel from youtube a Brasilian Teacher speaking neutrally of history, and second France sent 2.000 French heavy cavalary don't know if you heared that before, or if was just the 400 English Longbowman
Still 7.600 vs near 31.000 is a very big difference.
Do you know why? Franks always tried to tell they had the best cavalry in all Medieval Europe, but it was because they were well trained and equipped as large numbers.
What Castillian and French didn't bother was that our cavalry specially the "Order of Christ" were the descendents of the old Templar order that all Europe including the pope Except Portugal persued some centuries earlier and the portuguese had passed training through generations of knights. Some respect before responding irracionally, you call us thieves of what?
      gold? From Brasil?
only 1/5 of the gold came to Portugal to pay the expenses of investments, and Brasil didn't yet existed as nation, thieves of africans? know that Africa still today keep slavery from warfare and on that time they weren't different they sold slaves from their defeated enemies just to buy guns and spices from the portuguese
as a small nation we controlled our empire mostly from aliances with natives and the portuguese ex-colonies still have natives living today they are descendants of allied tribes and many of those volluneered to join mercenary bandeirantes to atack their rival tribes to sell them to gain more power for themselves.
1500 tribes isnt the same pacifist tribes as today many were canibals and didnt care who they atacked what stopped many from being slaved was cristianism that forbidden cristians of being slaves in a cristian country

Ayla Soares Dont spread historical garbage innacuracies, that "rule" was a mere union of two crowns (due to succession issues once again) that was vastly supported by most of the portuguese nobleman and burguesy. The Iberion Union was held for 60 years, during that time Portugal and Spain were diferent countries with diferent language, laws, currency, etc. But since the Union was under a spanish kings comand of course we served the spanish interests (including waging war against our english alies). That said, the moment Filipe III of Portugal (Filipe IV of Spain) decided to remove all the status that held portuguese independence (such has having diferent laws, etc ,etc) and try to make Portugal a province of Spain, a rebellion broke out and once again the Spanish were defeated and we left the Union. Hope you liked the history lesson.

Nao, nao as perderiamos.

    • @greentuga691
      @greentuga691 6 лет назад +64

    • @ms.mittenz

You mean John, John and John?
Their brothers Joao, Xuan, Giovani and Sean are coming too, I heard from a reliable source there below.
So I can tell that the brothers Ivanhoe, Jean, Johann, Hans,Yannis and Ivan are coming also a bit later, their father Johannes gave his permission. They just need to blance their accounts before they can come out to play, father insisted. And after their northern brothers get rid of a few Vikings, Jan, Jon and Johan will join too.
Finally, I can tell from here Finland, who's on the other end of Europe, and where all the European fashions always come a bit late, that we can only send you there Juha, Juhani, Hannes, Hannu, Joni, Jouni, Jonne, Janne, Jani, Jaani, Jukka and Jussi. And that's only because their mother Johanna is really angry with them. She said their sisters are enough for keeping the house, namely Jonna, Janna, Jaana, Janina, Janine, Niina, Nina and Ninni.
Yeah, Johannes and Johanna have been quite busy. Picked some colourful variations for their kid's names.
Like John. Just don't tell grandpa Johanan about this. After burying grandma Hanna, he's been easily upset. Says he's mixing the grandchildren's names. Let's not shock him now.

Although, even I really don't count them as such for Spaniard. Both nations have almost the same language, the only differences were developed upon getting rid of Arabs which is merely 600 years in span. If Portugal did have a third enemy, Spain will be your best and only ally that you can count on!

just 2 minor mistakes... during the 1st Castillan invasion, Castillan forces took the city of Santarém, which would serve as a Castillan outpost inside portuguese territory garrisoned by part of the army that had sieged Lisbon in the 1st invasion and was a strongly defended position that even the Portuguese didn't dare to attack just yet... when the 2nd invasion began, king Juan I of Castilla entered Portugal through Trancoso, passing by Coimbra en route to Santarém to rendezvous with the other Castillan forces to reinforce it's numbers before attempting another attack on Lisbon, but the Portuguese army managed do force the Castillan army to move more to the west of it's original route, and eventually, in Aljubarrota, the Portuguese now saw a more favorable site to stop the invaders, Juan I decided to go around them to bypass the portuguese army and rush straight towards Santarém, but seeing that if he didn't defeat the portuguese on that hill then, he'd have to deal with both the garrison in Lisbon and an entire army harassing his army's rear guard, so he decided to accept the challenge from King João I and his loyal Constable.
Another details that failed there were the fact that portuguese made obstacles, trenches and traps, forced the castillan forces not only to slow down their advance, but also move through a very narrow corridor, that even caused many casualties on the Castillan just from soldiers being trampled or crushed by their own comrades, and there was an attempt by the Castillans to flank Portuguese positions by attacking and surrounding it's supplies carriages located on the rear of the Portuguese lines, but were surprisingly defeated by the tenacious effort of the Portuguese guards

The Yong Condestable Nuno Alvares Pereira, making the guerrilla war beyond the Castilian fleet and army, set signal fires in the hight of the Palmela Castle, south side of the Tagus river, to being seen in Lisbon, to keep the resistence there, as a signal of hold the fight because we are here. Pela Patria lutar!

      Over land, over sea,
      To arms, to arms!
      For the Fatherland, fight!
Against the british, march on, march on!"
The word british (bretoes) was after some time replaced with canhoes (= canyons) just to make it more politically correct, lol.

i cant believe you made a video about one of the most important battles in the history of my country. you should make a video about the Battle of Torres Vedras, during the napoleonic invasion or the Battle of the 3 Kings (the greatest militar disaster in portuguese history, also know as Battle of Alcacer-Quibir, it caused the spanish occupation of Portugal and the rise of House Braganza). I'm portuguese and a great fan of your videos. however, in this video you could have talked about the Square Tecnic (in portuguede "tatica do quadrado") used by the portugueses and that was one of the major reasons for their success.

    • @lopazio

Ed Knowz Experts claim that ther was no such thing as a Square Tactic... They claim that the portuguese front line opened up out of fear from the strong french push, but then, the portuguese general order them to close on them. And after they closed on the french nobleman, something happened which is also a big fail in this video: a lot of french nobleman from the first cavalry charge were made prisioners on the back of the portuguese lines. But then, in order for the portuguese to resist to the second spanish push, D. Nuno Alvares Pereiro order his men to kill the French prisioners that were imprisioned in the back which was not something normal at medieval battles (nobleman prisioners means huge ransoms to be paid). This was one of the most bloody battles of this period . The portuguese chased the fleing spanish army and it is said that the rivers became red from all the blood. Thousands of spanish soldiers and nobleman were killed and it had such an impact on the Spanish Kingdom that the King issued a TWO YEARS mourning period... This battle was key to portuguese history as it repelled the Spanish from trying to invade again, making way for the Portuguese Age of Exploration and Discoveries (an effort that took place with the same courage and violent/bloody mentality as in a
Aljubarrota, nobleman knights became Ship Captains ) which gave Portugal a place on the Human History.

lopazio i remember studying in school the square tactic invented by nuno alvares. they imprisioned the vanguard in a square and killed them. it was all meant to be that way. that is if what they teach us in school is true. and they didnt killed many spanish, the english killed more than the portuguese. we collected a lot of prisioners, and we released many of them. We were smaller than spain and the war lasted a few more years.

Can you look into doing the Siege of Tenochtitlan? Because the Aztecs did like building walls it was was not a traditional siege but more like many skirmishes getting close to the city with each victory. These skirmishes took place on the water and earthwork bridges as Tenochtitlan was located on an island in the middle of a lake. The conquistadors and allies had to also build 13 full size brigantines in order to gain superiority on the water. Lets also not forget how insanely large the armies where with 500,000 men in total fighting during the Siege of Tenochtitlan. If you need sources just ask and ill pull them up for information on the battle.

Exactly. It was stuff like what you mentioned that makes the war of conquest in the Americas so unique. Also the aztec weapons and armor where amazing. The aztec armor was tightly woven out of cotton and other materials and worked much like the European gambeson, except it was much more effective in battle. So effective in fact that ALL of the Conquistadors shed their metal breastplate and gambeson for the Aztec woven armor. Also the main melee weapon of the aztecs, the macuahuitl, hand an obsidian edge that would rarely break and was sharper than a razor. Here is one quote from a Conquistador about the effectiveness of the weapon.
"One Indian at a single stroke cut open the whole neck of Cristóbal de Olid’s horse, killing the horse. The Indian on the other side slashed at the second horseman and the blow cut through the horse’s pastern, whereupon this horse also fell dead."

A few things that weren't mentioned here:
1 - The soon-to-be-deceased king authorized his daughter's marriage under a signed agreement that the throne could not be claimed Jure uxoris, and that the first male son of the union would inherit the throne of Portugal, but relinquish his claim to the throne of Castille (which would go to the second born), thus keeping both realms separate. After the king's death, however, the Queen Regent declared that treaty null and void, thus starting the sucession war, hence the nickname "Leonor the treacherous".
2 - The video makes it seem as if the king was behind the army movements, when in reality it was the Constable (Nuno Álvares Pereira) who was leading the army, and arguably the greatest military leader the country has ever had. In particular, he used the square tactic to face a 5 times superior army on equal terms, hundreds of years before Wellington. Also, the "pits" described here were not there by accident, but had been deliberately digged and concealed prior to battle, trapping the main charging force of the enemy. Those two moves, both product of the Constable's mind, were essentially what won the battle.
    Other than that, awesome video!

The French at this battle were of rather sterner stuff, including two battalions each of the 1st and 23rd Légère, one of the 42nd de Ligne, and four squadrons of the 9th Chasseurs à Cheval.

There was also some attempts in the Portuguese flanks (apart the front who had the main battle) but the square keep its integrety. A Castillian almost killed João I, saved in the last fraction of a second by one of his men, killing the castillian., whille already in the movement of the strike (in the Chronicle of the time), hard to believe for some people at least. A movie scenne in Holywood on other battles, even when not true. But was on this battle - in the case its in the principal Chronicle - Fernão Lopes.

    Loved the video.
Now, being Portuguese and working a lot on the history of our country, allow me to contribute.
At Atoleiros, Trancoso (Where Juan fought the forces of people loyal to João de Castro son of Pedro I and Inês de Castro), as well as Aljubarrota, there were Portuguese people on both sides both because of oaths and promised perks. However, at Atoleiros not one fighter for the ones you call rebels died at Atoleiros. Not sure rebels is accurate, all three John had legitimate claims to the throne.
At Aljubarrota the Castilian king was sick and not in very good conditions to study the terrain and command. Still he didn't want to charge with the cavalry, but many of the knight present there were young man, eager to prove themselves (a lot of the more experienced Portuguese and Castilian knights that supported him had died at Atoleiros) and charged against his will, forcing him to send the infantry to help them when they got caught in the traps set by the Portuguese.
The Portuguese at Aljubarrota used the terrain irregularities and also dug lots of holes, places stakes in them and covered them, they dug "covas de lobo" and also used a tactic call "do quadrado" of the square, in which the front line sometimes appeared to break and then the enemy would be met by the rear and the "alas" which were mobile. Openings were left so that the enemy could escape when trapped, because it is easier to kill a fleeing enemy than one fight for its life.
The actual tactic of choosing a good terrain and fighting on foot was of british influence and was adapted to the local reality by Nuno Álvares Pereira; that as well as the moving version of fighting on foot.
There were about 30000 on Juan side, mostly Castilian and Frensh at this point, and 200 British and 6000 Portuguese. Some of the 30000 were killed by their own man trampled under their feet.
As for the Padeira de Aljubarrota there are many versions of the story, which ilustrated the will and actions of the people at that time. Usually it is said she killed 7 Castilians. :p
Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
There is also a story, a few centuries later, in India where 150 Portuguese led by Duarte Pacheco Pereira, with three ships and a fortress manage to stop an army of 50000 with 300 elephants and 150 ships led by the Samorim of Calcutta who was after the Rajá of Cochim for joining with the Portuguese, at the river Cambalam.
Or the time where the Spanish, in 1580 try to take Ilha Terceira and are beaten by cows.

      Spaniard here.
The heavy cavarly charge is the most common "strategy" done in Middle Age. Heavy Cavalry was made up by noblemans from the Kingdom. It was the same through all Europe, France, Germany/Austria/HRE, England, etc etc
It was a matter of honor, and they had to be the first ones to start the battle. Latter on, we realized it, and we created Tercios, that used long pikes to counter that typical medieval thing.
      Un saludo a todos :D

    • @admontblanc

The portuguese commander probably had been a student of ancient battles as he employed a typical Hannibal strategy of displaying his forces in square formation but with a fake weak center line of infantry. This was crucial to make the spaniard commanders believe they could easily break their center with a heavy cav charge, in reality once the cav reached the center they were enclosed by pikes and since they running uphill their charge wasn't strong enough to break the defensive lines. It seems stupid but they were tricked into making that mistake.
