I played in a High School Band, The Centaurs, in a small town west of Minneapolis, Minnesota in the mid '60s. Our main squeeze was The Astronauts, The Beach Boys and Chuck Berry. We loved playing surf music through Fender Showman's with the Tank reverb on the side. It's fun happy music and lots of people would get up dance at parties. Thanks for bringing Baja back to life!

Being from Minneapolis, it’s always been a strange hotbed for surf music, considering the only water with waves big enough to surf might be Lake Superior (if you’re keen on freezing to death). The replacements did a pretty good surf (ski) tune in “Buck Hill”

Any surf/instro lessons are always welcome by me. I’d love to see some Man or Astroman on here at some point. They had a great vibe.

Yes, yes, more surf! Astronauts, Astroman, Shadowy Men (Even though they insist they are not a surf band.), The Shadows, etc. Lots of good instrumental music out there. Not a lot of lessons. Teach us, Adrian!

How well I remember listening to The Astronauts at Tulagi's in Boulder in 1965 or so. Sadly all the members of that great surf rock band have passed.

I love it when you deep dive in the theory and harmony of songwriting, as it shows us how to expand and improve our knowledge and apply it to our own playing. I'm sick of "put your finger there" only tutorials.

Great tune ! When I was in high school playing in a rock band the Astronauts from Boulder Co were one of our favorite bands to steal songs from ! I bought all of their album records, and still have them ! Glad I am a patreon member...thanks for all of your work !

Same. The Rowland S. Howard/Lydia Lunch cover to that one (SVM) is tits. Ever heard it b4? If yes, hell ya! If no, check it asap, it'll wreck you. Adrian, if perchance you see this: Rowland S. Howard version of Lee Hazlewood's 'Some Velvet Morning' would be the King Tut(orial). Either way mate, you're the greatest. Thank you for all you do, upping my patreon pledge, rock on!

I can feel the warmth of the sunshine, the waves are shaping up but not too big. It’s warm enough for just boardshorts. Think I’ll throw my board on top of my ‘57 Chevy estate (pastel blue) and cruise down to the uncrowded beach...

Awesome surf tune Adrian! I am really enjoying your surf tutorials. I have a request for another instrumental, though it is not a surf tune technically. The song is Tico Tico and has an incredibly catchy melody. Again thanks for posting all these amazing lessons and all the best for 2023! Cheers! 👍👍

I grew up in Southern California in the surf culture of the day. After college I moved to Boulder Colorado and became involved wtth a natural foods cooperative selling organic produce, dairy products and also had a bakery-deli featuring organic products. Anyway, there was a guy who was a reguilar customer named Richard Fifield who one day asked if I was ever a surfer since I seemed to look the part. I told him I was and he told me that he used to be in a band named The Astronauts who had some surfer music hits. I told heck yeah I heard of the Astronauts, they were like the theme music of many a day of surfing and nights of dancing back in the day. He told me the band was from Boulder and never actually surfed. I thought that was pretty funny considering their music was such a natural surfing sound that they never surfed or and even been to the ocean when they wrote the tunes.

Adrian thank you for covering this one. This has been one of my favorite surf songs since 1996 when I first discovered them. They, The Astronauts, The Ventures and Robert Smith of The Cure was what influenced me to buy a Jazzmaster. Mine is an AVRI 62 I bought new in 2003.
You play this song perfect and not miss a beat or note.

Astonaughts had a numer of cool tunes. Though most famous for his work with Nancy Sinatra Lee Hazelwood did a lot of good stuff as part of the Sill-Hazelwood productions (where Phil Spector got his start), and his solo album 'Cowboy in Sweden' is a classic.

I was 30 years old in 1997 when I first heard this in a pub in Singapore, of all places. This is second only to "Pipeline" as the greatest "surf rock" piece ever. How in the HELL did that great band not achieve national stardom? This track alone could have at least placed them at the top of the One-Hit-Wonders. I hate the American people for snubbing this while making stars of execrable acts like Jan & Dean (though I kinda like "Tennessee"), Skeeter Davis and the sheer excruciting agony that was Frankie Valli.
