I Gave My Golfcart Unlimited Range! Diesel Electric

- I bought the cheapest Chinese 196cc diesel engine on amazon, used it to turn a brushless hub motor to generate electricity, then connected it to the golf cart batteries and drove around, it worked very well, its a hybrid setup that works on many types of fuel, all built in my back yard
I think my fav part of this all was getting the petrol generator out to use the drill to start the diesel generator to charge the electric golf cart. Brilliant
It's the pony motor like tractors have where they have a small motor that you can drive lightly on that you use to engage the big engine. Bulldozers too.
that was so funny!
One of my pipe dreams is to have my Lister CS driving a generator which would charge a LFP battery bank which in turn would power an electric outboard motor or a small paddle wheel on a pontoon boat. Looks like you're way ahead of me on the execution of the concept. Well done.
Bro had to start a generator, to start an engine, to charge a battery. That had my crying 😂😂
@@eneharu it’s all a process that’s life sometimes
It's so comforting to know there are other people out there that look at two different things that have no business together and go I'm going to combine them together😅😅😅
Correct! I just like tinkering with anything that moves or has an engine
Diesel Series Hybrid Golf Cart? Hell Yeah!
Some years back GM hired a guy from the west coast to coordinate (?) their EV program. He left after a while, apparently tired of GMs approach (odd, that!). He went back to Cali and converted a Honda del Sol to electric his way. To increase the range he connected a motorcycle trailer with an IC engine. I don't recall if it was gas, diesel or maybe turbine. I always thought that a small, constant speed gas turbine would be ideal. Ran at constant speed they could be pretty efficient and low emissions. Cool build! Keep going!
Woah that’s awesome same concept I suppose! Appreciate the comment!
mount it to the back of the golf cart frame and built a box enclosure over it
@@stevenfrazier8939 that would be awesome, it’s very heavy though it would have to be a good mount
You need a couple volts high for a charging voltage . Look at the 120v charger output as an example. Put a proper hitch on the golf cart and a harbor freight trailer frame kit. 2:05 if you have a 120v generator, itll drivre the 120v charher without any McGyvering the DC charging voltage.
Hi, cool ideal if it works and keeps working just mount it on the back of the cart on that angle iron.
I have a 250w solar panel ontop of my 48v lead acid generic golf cart, took it to a event that was mostly nighttime driving. borrowed a honda generator but never had to actually strap it to the cart -- everyone (20 or so) did good at plugging it in at camp.
did use a 4s20p64ah 18650 pack as a range extender, with a dc-dc boost converter.
That’s awesome, I want to do solar panels next, then lithium conversion
@@Mikebuildss during 2020 I bought pallets of panels from santansolar, sold them locally. Did good.
The cart is a 4seater, panel was a bit more narrow than the roof and a bit shorter. The panel feeds into a mppt boost controller. All connectors are salvaged Anderson's from rackmount UPS crap.
I want to sell this cart since it's actually pretty nice and get a beater to really mess with.
Batteryhookup usually has decent lithium packs that will be good for a golfcart.
You are having way to much fun 😁
Very entertaining video. Nice job 😅
iv been thinking this idea in a long times, thanks for doing it im really interest with the video
I remember the chopped Kroger parking lot security golf cart we used to ride
Bro me too it was awesome lol have a video of it somewhere ! hope you’re doing good man!
try mounting it to the bac of the golf cart it looks like it wouldn't be that difficult as there is metal supports you can mount it and less scetch with the wagon
@@electrickingzton7678 I agree only issue is it’s very heave I would definitely have to brace and beef up the rear of the cart
That was sick lmao, if that was my Uber guy, i'd hop in lol
@@alwaysandy1 I’m sure you would especially because the driver is a man!
So cool! Great video
Costco stocks the usual varieties of Lead Acid golf cart batteries - 6v and 8v. And the 12v Deep Cycle also. Your diesel "hybrid" cart is good for long trips and 'no chargers available' areas. Oh, and a Diesel can use bio-diesel, but not simply raw fryer oil - you need to add Methanol and strip out the Glycerin first. Look up the procedure first. 😊
I may try fry oil next so the exhaust will smell like fried
@@Mikebuildss Best is to stay away of metanol danger stuff, work just fine with regular WVO. Mix WVO with 10% gasoline, let it sit for a day or two to settle the impurities (if brand new VO just mix and drive), filter, add 5-10% diesel and you are ready to go. Aceton will do the same but is more expensive.
i noticed a back rack on that golf cart so what about elimitaing the trailer all together and modifying that back rack to mount the generator to it depending on how heavy it is you may need a counter weaight on the front so you dont do weelies or something who knows. also would be neat to make it a true hybrid and set up some sorta auto start system to turn the disel on when the voltage reaches a certen point and then turn it off after the fact
@@TwilightVaramek an auto start stop system would be awesome
Funny how they needed a generator, to power a drill, to start a generator!
My cordless one was too weak!
The neighbors ever complain about you? 😂😂
@@jesusgonzalezpichardo6033 they can’t because when they need stuff fixed I’m the only one who can help them!
I have a clapped out golf cart too lol. The rear suspension is so bad it bottoms out easily on small bumps, and it can barely carry multiple people up hill.
@@BeanBYTESOF this one was pretty bad, I replaced the suspension bushings and it made a big difference, the parts were cheap too
@@Mikebuildss I might of bee a little bit dramatic, but the rear suspension is definitely shot, and it needs new batteries. But thank you for letting me know.
nice job.
Thank you! Cheers!
retro fit a self start
That would be awesome make it automatically swap over
LOL love it!
Thanks!
transverse mount on the back and use a wider belt.
Definitely needs more belt for sure
Dude thats sick haha
Thanks!
Your still burning a fuel for unlimited range do mpg on diesel vs 10 miles on batteries how much $$$ for 10 miles of charging ??
It’s probably very efficient
Lets go!
Diesel l electric locomotives work the same way.
have everyone use the Temgot golf cart battery?
@@MoharaniDas-em7qb no clue honestly
Bigger pulley on the engine, lower engine speed . If you can scale this up, you can make a billion dollars selling 'unlimited mileage' to the EV people that can't charge their batteries when the lines get long.
That would be awesome! Just need to build it a little less janky
This is about as efficient as the US government
@@stephenEmerson-l5m Agreed!
A gas engine to power an electric motor to start a diesel engine to power an electric motor😂.
@@Idahoprepper71 correct! Makes it fun!
Lol
