If you can even do simple things yourself you will have enough money for a down payment on a house n 5-6 years. Cars are the easiest way to turn $50k into $10k. I drive the best car in the world it’s called , PAID FOR. 😂😂😂
Bought my 2019 Mustang with the 10 speed (2nd year they came out with the 10speed) . No issues with mine At 50k I had the trans fluid changed. I wanted to stay ahead in the maintenance on the 10 speed. Always believed that if you take care of your vehicle, it will take care of you. And as of typing this, I now have 53k on the odometer, and I’m still getting between 45-49mpg on the highway on pump ‘93. Gonna change the spark plugs next weekend so I believe I will probably get back to my 50 mpg on the highway. Moral of this, is that if you take care of your vehicle and don’t beat on them they will last a long time. I would know, my other car is a ‘12 Honda accord (bought brand new in ‘12) and in the 114,000 I had on it (4years ago) the only thing I had to change (besides tires and brakes) because it started out small and I caught it early was a small coolant leak from the bottom rad hose. I replaced them both (upper and lower + the thermostat). Still have the car till this day, and still drives like a dream.✌🏼
Have my Got it for Free 1991 Explorer for 13 years with 12 on the rebuilt tranny that is still perfect & it has averaged out to less $$ per year each passing year providing no problems & so far so good.
my 04 explorer with 4WD has been wonderful. bought with 162k, at 212k. I never use the 4WD, but it's there for winter just incase. Never had any real issues. I've off roaded it a little harder than it's designed for, so a wheel bearing was shot after a trip to Moab. Some greater than normal suspension wear. Nothing wild.
The all black, 1991 Mustang GT I had from new, a 5.0L V8, 5sp. manual, got 25.4 mpg on the highway going 70 mph with the A/C on in 90°F weather. I had frost forming on the inside of the windshield. 😂 IIRC, it had 2.73 gears in the limited slip differential.
I believe it. I've had two 4.6 Mustangs 5 speed manuals that could easily get 28 mpg at 75 mph in most conditions and I always run the a/c or heat. My current 5.0 DOHC can only get about 26 but that's cause the 3.73s kill fuel economy above 70, which I rarely do below 75 I have seen 28 at 70 though.
I owned a 2003 Ford Explorer 4 wheel drive for nearly 13 years. It was the best and most realiable vehicle I ever owned. Never had a single engine problem, only replaced a window regulator and lock acuator. Replaced the shocks around 130k miles. When I sold it a few years ago, it was still running great, but did have some rust underneath and peeling paint at top. Most reliable vehicle out of last 6 vehicles I owned and made me a loyal Ford customer. The new Ford Explorers feel like a soccer mom SUV and didn't care much for them, so I got a F150 truck which I love!
@@Jacob-gd9ps I'd say go for it! 56k is really low miles for a 2003. I woud absolutely have the transmission fluid changed, if it hasn't been recently. Other than that, just keep you coolant and oil changed as needed. My Explorer was super dependable.
@@Jacob-gd9ps For oil, use synthetic blend every 5K miles. Coolant is usually 100K or 5 years, but I'd look online or check manual on that one, not sure.
Had an X5 after owning a 740iL and a 528. Can verify that the X5 is a terribly expensive vehicle as it ages. Mine had the big V8, which had a big $750 gasket that had to get replaced at 100k miles... waited as long as I could but it was losing a quart of oil every couple weeks (!!). The 740iL wasn't much better, the serpentine belt blew under the hood and tore apart everything, plus it had a water-cooled alternator, because why not mix water and electricity. Find a manual 3-series without AC and there's your ultimate driving machine.
i know scotty is always right, dude knows the deal. great mechanic. tons of knowledge. hoever, my ex has had a ford EXplorer for almost ten years now and she been beating the hell out of it since the beginning. i think within every pile of whatever car exists, therell always be one that was made the right way.
@@rgeniec You need to include all costs like payment, and charging in public is almost expensive as gasoline. My maintenance costs on my two ICE vehicles averages about $300 a year. The tires also last much longer too cause they are lighter

Haha hello from South Carolina. I'd definitely never get a BMW. I'll stick to the good and reliable cars that run forever like Toyota, Honda, and Mazda. Thank you Scotty for giving people the truth.
Bought my 75 yr old father a 2000 Ford Explorer with transmission out and 140K miles for $1200 years ago. Replaced transmission from pull a part for $150 and it now has 298K miles and Still going 😳 without a single problem.
I bought a used bmw x5 and can confirm the repairs are very expensive. If you decide you wanna roll the dice and buy one of these, make sure you get the best warranty you can because you will need it! I had a 2014 x5 with 75k miles on it when i bought it. Bought a warranty for $3k. The warranty was paid for from repair cost after about 6 months of ownership. I sold it at 98k miles
BMWs are only very popular because they all look very flashy and stylish no matter which one you get. Ive seen people buy BMWs that have no idea about cars since they buy them even with CEL and not knowing what the CEL is for. But hey they got a BMW and they can tell all their friends that they own one so they are praised for no reason.
While I am a Chrysler/Dodge product fan, specifically the 1996 Chrysler Town and Country is one to avoid. It ate transmissions for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
I bought a new model 2014 dodge dart and its been solid. 9 years later its had 1 brake job, wheel bearings, oil changes, and that it. Oh and i blew tires on pot holes 3 times. I bought the cheapest tires and blew a new one 2 weeks later. Bought the most expensive tires and so far so good.
Bought my 2001 crv for $3700 with 90k and a huge pile of parts receipts. Thing is a beast and its easy to fix. Radiator took an hour. Idle valve took 15min. Burnt out valve cost $2000 but now i know get them tuned every 40k... 100k miles later not burning oil...trans strong...awd works...
Had an X5 2012 8speed auto, straight 6 twin turbo diesel,it hauled anything, and no trouble, the M57 diesel is good, replaced runflats when they wore out...
Nissan Altimas are good cars if you take care of them. My parents have one with over 200k miles and only had to do basic maintenance - oil changes, tires, and brakes. Lexus RX is the biggest money pit. I owned one for only 6 months and I spent more money fixing it than all my other vehicles I ever owned combined. It spent more time in the shop than me driving it, I only put 2k miles on it over 6 months. And it still had nothing but problems, I practically had to give it away just to get rid of it.
Don't forget GMC Terrain. Love the vehicle (bought new 2012) but by far the biggest money pit I've ever owned...and that includes 2 Cadillacs I owned previously.
We have a 2014 Explorer with all wheel drive. We have 95,000 miles on it and it is running just fine. We live in MN and a 2 wheel drive is just not practical in the winter. Finding a 2 wheel drive around here is quite difficult as few want them. Transmissions require maintenance. Let the fluid get old and you will pay for it.
I had a 02 and 05 one reg the other Eddie Bauer edition and both transmissions went flaky at 120k The 02 was a manual switch to turn on/off 4\4 but just Flat Stopped No warning The 05 had buttons/auto 4/4 and that one kept turning 4/4 on/off on/off By itself in any weather! But still drove it 120k to 170k like that Before putting in new rear leaf springs and reman trans and sold it. Was told the shift solenoids are deep inside the trans and if I had just managed to keep on top of my trans fluid drain/fill I wouldn’t have the slippage as early as I did
Its funny with the Mustang. Bought a 1990 GT 5-speed and it was still running powerfully when I sold it with 270k. Had a 2001 Cobra and 2003 GT....both JUNK! Brand new both of them and tons of problems before 30k on either. Got smart and bought a 2007 Mazda 3 built in Japan and it still runs like new 17 years later with 141k on the clock.
That gen Explorer has a fine 4wd system. However he’s correct in the transmission being crap. Regardless of 4wd or rwd. He failed to mention how bad that engine can be. Timing chain guides go out very often on them. Especially the earlier ones
If you live in MT your life is easier if you have a 4 wheel drive unit. Back in the 60s -the 80s. Most people never had 4 wheel drive. & it sucked. You should/need a 4 wheel drive it just helps you stay on the road going 70.
Years ago, was shopping around for a car at Carsense. I had a friend there who was straight with me. I was looking at a BMW SUV that was 6k below KBB value and was seriously considering it. My friend talked me out of it. He said, hey, it's a great deal no doubt, but....Honda/Toyota/Hyundai/Kia cars we rate as Class A reliability. BMW is class F. If (when) you need repairs on the BMW, you will pay very high prices for replacement parts.
I have the exact same generation Explorer but with the V8. Mine had the differential and transfer case replaced before I bought it and have had no problems. I also don't use 4wd and I average 17mpg because I drive carefully.
I actually bought a new Nissan Kicks that has a JATCO transmissions. My dad and I have been saying for years to avoid Nissan due to that, but I really had no choice. I have a coworker that had an early 2010s Altima where the transmission went out after and I advised him to get the transmission serviced when he started having slippage issues and I didn't. My coworker ended up totaling the Altima because it needed too much work and the transmission put him over budget to fix that car. I should have taken my own warnings about Nissan but... It was either that or buy a Kia/Hyundai that is easily stolen (more expensive too), or spend well over my budget, or get a Nissan Sentra or Kicks. I was able to get a good price on the Kicks. The F&I guy got me a free all inclusive oil change/maintenance plan (3 scheduled services at the recommended mileage over 3 years). I feel slightly better with the dealer looking after my car that it has the potential to last me up to 10 years/100k miles.
I got a 04 explorer. It runs & drives great. 90k mikes $1500. I snatched it up. Used cars here are outrageous! 3 TO 5 GRAND ABOVE KBB DEALER PRICE. FROM INDIVIDUALS.
For decades ago! I went either to the cheap store or later to the junkyard! Because 1st i wanted FM radio/ later they were in junkyard! &mounted then under dash skirt or any where i could!.
There’s a reason why you don’t see many older BMW and Mercedes cars on the road. They are too expensive too maintain and unreliable. I know someone who recently bought a 2001 Toyota Corolla as a second beater car. It’s in perfect condition. Everything works from the AC/ heater, radio, no engine or warning lights. Car runs smooth and gets good gas mileage for having almost 200,000 miles. He bought it for $1,800 and only replaced a rear taillight bulb for $5.
My dad bought a 2006 X5..... He dumped 3x the car's value into just keeping it running...... Then after he spent all that money he sodding sold it and bought a 2015 X5...... And since he never transports people or uses the cargo space of the car I can't understand why he just needs to have it.
Its funny the older fox bodys with 5 speed and 5.0 liter on the highway would get just over 29 miles to the gallon. However my brothers 427 with dual quads in his 68 torino would get a paltry 6 miles to the gallon and on the highway about 10 mpg.
My grandpa has always been obsessed with BMWs and Mercedes even though they are money pits and a pain in the butt to work on. He's also the type of person that wants to spend a week tearing apart a car and trying to fix it himself before he gives up. I had a older model Mercedes that had some type of sensor issue that we tried fixing to no avail, sent it to our local shop that worked on Mercedes exclusively. They said they couldn't figure it out and had to wait on an electronics guy to come in and look at the car. That car sat in the corner of their shop for OVER A YEAR. I was a teenager at the time and I hadn't seen the car in so long I was convinced my grandpa had sold it. It ended up creating more issues from sitting so long. Worst part is the shop said the electronics dude claimed he probably had done the job correctly, my grandpa just cheaped out and bought some chinese part that didn't work. Had we done the same thing with an actual Mercedes part it wouldn't of sat there that long. He's gotten newer BMWs... either the a3 or a5 can't remember, two separate cars of the same make and model just different years. The first one is completely bricked because the steering column is permanently locked and now he's had the newer ones in the shop 4 times in the last two weeks. All that said, can't give him too much grief as I drive my VW lol.
Agree on not getting AWD - may as well spring for 4wd, it's more useful. As for Explorers, the 2nd gen lasts really long! Just change that oil, use synthetic. My 98 has 176K and purring like a kitten. I wouldn't buy an Explorer past say, 2010. Older ones more reliable.
I’m learning a lot about cars from you, how much do I owe you for tuition? 😁 I was Army Infantry and my father was not at all great at fixing things but I am so inspired that I may look into going to a school with my GI Bill. It seems like when you start learning about things you start seeing them in your real life. Case in point is your topic today. A friend of the family told my wife that she’s selling two of her cars: BMW and Tesla 🤣🤣🤣🙂🙂🙂
I have a 2013 Mustang GT 5.0 V8 that runs perfect and I've gotten my money out of it. I'm probably going to keep it until my time is up in 40-50 years.
@@oreally8605 Economy buyers wouldn't look at one in the first place. It's my second vehicle and mostly for nice days and the occasional road trip. I run premium all the time because I'm not easy on the car and I like to prevent engine issues (pre-ignition, etc.).I literally just change the oil annually and other maintenance like coolant every five years and have a manual so I haven't done the trans fluid yet. Might do that one myself. If I was more experienced and had the tools, this car would be cheap to run. Even the replacement parts for the Brembo brakes is reasonably priced.
gotta be honest- i slightly disagree about the explorers, i have a 2nd gen ford explorer sport trac 2008 and its amazing- im at 167k miles and yes i did replace the rear diff, but other than that its great and reliable. the v6 4.0 is extremely reliable/ but maybe its just depending on who drove it for the 160 miles, cause anyone can destroy a vehicle
Scotty Euro cars are much easier to work on now days because parts are easier to get knowledge is all over the internet. I think you'd be surprised of how different it is today compared to the 80s & 90s. Euro cars like all cars have there strengths & weaknesses but I wouldn't say a VW, BMW, AUDI are cars to avoid in America like they used to be. Now I don't own a BMW SUV but if I found one with a naturally aspirated motor thats not direct injection with out a turbo thats been relatively well maintained I would buy it. I do admit that some mechanics just assume since you drive a BMW your rich & they may try to stick it to you but working on these cars isn't much different & if your a good mechanic your a good mechanic. I've seen some mechanics claim they wont touch European Cars but when they are tasked & give in they realize they are that hard to work on. You can get the tools these things require for the same price as American Standard.
What’s your take on 2020 Audi q5? That’s the final year of the last model. The 2021 has the newer facelift but of course 1st year is a no no till bugs issues worked out.
When in court for the roll over lawsuits, Firestone admitted they had a bad batch of rubber go out and that is why the tires blew but it didn't explain the entire roll over cause, it was also proven that a design flaw in the suspension of the old Explorers contributed to the other half of the cause but, Ford was denying it and blaming Firestone entirely. Shows how wonderful Ford's history of lie and deny makes them look doesn't it?
Scotty, what would you recommend for a good vehicle on budget of $5,000? I'm stationed in Japan in the Navy and I am coming back to the states later this year to Virginia. I am thinking of a small truck or a toyota corrola. P.s. Japan has way better used car deals. I bought a 2003 Honda Mobilio for $500 with 65k miles on it, but had to sell it because it was not 25 years old to be able to ship overseas. I sold it to a Marine for $650. I will miss Japan and the nice little vehicles.
I’d go corolla a small truck is gonna cost a lot more to fuel avoid the years with oil burning problems you may also look at Scions and other Toyota models like a Prius
Any tips on keeping a 05 chevy silverado in good shape. Im flushing out the old coolant at the moment but dont know if there is anything else i should do to it.
So what mod would keep the plastic from cracking? My Toyota had cracked nylon in the cooling system 22 years after we got it. This should not happen to a new vehicle.
Scotty had way too much fun with that BMW. 🤣🤣 Bring my wallet. Big money wasted. In my opinion, it's not the complexity that is the problem even though that's what the proud engineers would want us to think, it's the poor quality of materials that is the problem. Plastics, gaskets, control modules last about like an 80's model GM.
Thank you Scotty for supplying me with a New Funny car manufacturers Acronym saying to Tell people,,, Do You Know what BMW, Stands for???,,, BRING MY WALLET! Lol
hi scotty, how are the ford mavericks hybrids holding up now ? I'm planning to pre order a hybrid but worried about reliability and quality, do you think they will be good to keep for 10+ years ? Main reason is gas prices have gone insane so I'm only considering hybrids, thanks
When Scotty buys a car, The salesman gives him money to take the car after he convinces them that keeping the car on the lot is a detriment to their company image.
410 bucks for a BMW hose. What a rip off. That alone is a deal breaker for me. The old BMW's in the 70's and 80's were good. I have and 1985 325 e with 320 K on it. No plastic crap on it.

How am I not surprised that a BMW ended up on this list.
Mercades Benz are Money Pits too
BMW has gone downhill.
Agreed
Another thing to look out for with those newer Ford explorers, is the rear heater core, they rot out and to replace them as nuts.
The other three money pit vehicles to avoid are the GMC Acadia, the Nissan Altima and the Honda Odyssey, mostly older models.
@@NATEG01 That is a great story to tell. Thanks.
Don't forget GMC Terrain. Love the vehicle (bought new 2012) but by far the biggest money pit I've ever owned...and that includes 2 Cadillacs I owned previously.
@@rockyroad7345 Thank you very much.
I have a 2003 Honda Odyssey……still going strong as ever……yeah before you ask…..original tranny 😊
I had a 92 Explorer and it was a huge lemon. A/C blew up with less the. 5pk and engine issues too
If there’s something that Scotty doesn’t know about cars , ‘it ain’t worth knowing’! ‘Keep ‘em comin’ Sir.
I had a 02 and 05 one reg the other Eddie Bauer edition and both transmissions went flaky at 120k
The 02 was a manual switch to turn on/off 4\4 but just Flat Stopped
No warning
The 05 had buttons/auto
4/4 and that one kept turning 4/4 on/off on/off
By itself in any weather!
But still drove it 120k to 170k like that
Before putting in new rear leaf springs and reman trans and sold it.
Was told the shift solenoids are deep inside the trans and if I had just managed to keep on top of my trans fluid drain/fill
I wouldn’t have the slippage as early as I did
Its funny with the Mustang.
160k that's good I bet the 4wd never fails it will go 250k all day
Change the fluid every 60,000 with full synthetic gear oil it will last at least 200,000 Change the Fluid its
simple,Scotty what say you?
Scotty recommends we all buy Nissan vehicles with the JATCO CVT asap while there still around for a good price.
Lol
😂
I have a 2000 explorer xlt 228k and just bought a 2008 escape with 78k hope it makes it to 150k ill be happy as hell no payments
My friend had a 2008 Mariner, which I think is the same as an Escape - she had 230k miles on it, minor issues.
@@jfish9014 that's awesome as hell solid commuter compact suv
@@bryanCLXT seems to be - I think they are nice looking, too.
94 Celica is the car you will ever need!!!
My moms got one of that generation of explorer, 2wd v6 eddie bauer edition . 190k miles and still going
They are decent vehicles. Too bad that Ford didn't get the bugs worked out of the Explorer.
Happy Sunday Scotty
Happy Sunday!
My dad bought a 2006 X5..... He dumped 3x the car's value into just keeping it running...... Then after he spent all that money he sodding sold it and bought a 2015 X5...... And since he never transports people or uses the cargo space of the car I can't understand why he just needs to have it.
There's a bmw shop down the street and that place is like Walmart the day before Christmas every day. Warning!
Its funny the older fox bodys with 5 speed and 5.0 liter on the highway would get just over 29 miles to the gallon. However my brothers 427 with dual quads in his 68 torino would get a paltry 6 miles to the gallon and on the highway about 10 mpg.
I have a friend who makes arm movements like Scotty and he was recently diagnosed with Tourette’s
Sport mode makes my Toyota Corolla so much better to drive in the canyons entering Arizona.
I remember working at dealerships in the late 90's, the nickname for the Ford Explorer was Ford "Exploder".
Hahahaha
Thanks for another great video, Scotty!
Only 27 mpg? I had a 93 T-Bird with 302 and 4 speed auto OD. That car got 25 on the highway. Our V6 90 Cougar got 30.
Happy Memorial Day Scotty. Thanks for your service brother!
What about 2014 Nissan Altima Are they good cars?
But if a VW bricks it's less $$ out the window
BMW doesn't make "a3 or a4"....🤔
A3 and a4 is Audi
U mean audi……bmw doesn’t make those models
Scotty...so funny when you cracked yourself up with the "runs like a dream"...."it's the costs of the repairs that's a nightmare!"
So, buy a 1994 celica?
Ford explorer
BMW X series
Mustang - sorry no times. Scotty is right as usual they're money 💰 pits.
I have a 2013 Mustang GT 5.0 V8 that runs perfect and I've gotten my money out of it. I'm probably going to keep it until my time is up in 40-50 years.
@Kenneth O Sweet car, and Mustangs do last, but for economy car budget guys, they're expensive.
Even the replacement parts for the Brembo brakes is reasonably priced.
gotta be honest- i slightly disagree about the explorers, i have a 2nd gen ford explorer sport trac 2008 and its amazing- im at 167k miles and yes i did replace the rear diff, but other than that its great and reliable. the v6 4.0 is extremely reliable/ but maybe its just depending on who drove it for the 160 miles, cause anyone can destroy a vehicle
i also agree if there was an alternative with 2wd it would be heaven lol
What are the good years of Mustang GT and which ones are bad besides 2018 he mentioned?
No, 'Rev Up Your Engines'??? My little blind dog didn't jump at the start of this video.. Thumbs up!!!
What’s your take on 2020 Audi q5? That’s the final year of the last model. The 2021 has the newer facelift but of course 1st year is a no no till bugs issues worked out.
That bmw’s grill looks similar to a cutlass salon grill from 77
Thank you
They used to call it the Ford Exploder for a reason.
BMW X5s are made in South Carolina, USA.
I would look for a Toyota corolla or Camry 98 to 02 range
Hi , I own 2 right hand drive vehicles & live in Canada 🇨🇦 love them great mileage never let me down, just very hard to get parts
I’d go corolla a small truck is gonna cost a lot more to fuel avoid the years with oil burning problems you may also look at Scions and other Toyota models like a Prius
Happy Memorial Day. A Corolla would make sense. I just got an 08 for $6900. 98k miles. Great car.
Plastic rots.
Ever met a code Scotty cared about? Me neither.🙅♂
Now I've got "Magic Carpet Ride" stuck in my head
I6 uses more fuel than V6? not sure on that one. I get 30-35 hwy from my M54
Lot of that is due to transmission

Scotty do you know how to change a battery on a Prius?
Which battery? The 12v is in the back of my old one on the back right under the "floorboard". Pain in the hoohah even for small hands. Good luck 👍🤝🙏
BMW - the ultimate poverty machine
Keeping the shops busy though. Trickle down.... Trickle from your pocket to theirs.
Top 10 DIY mechanic tools video please!
Scotty I'm sure you said before not to drive the car with the diagnostic tool plugged in. Looks like you're doing that with the Mustang.
Well if he's looking for live data it's fine. He's saying don't drive it plugged in just for funsies
I’m sitting here with an 09 4x4 like 🫠

2) Broke My Wallet X-tremely 5x over ( BMW X5)

Thank you Scotty for supplying me with a New Funny car manufacturers Acronym saying to Tell people,,, Do You Know what BMW, Stands for???,,, BRING MY WALLET! Lol
BMW stands for Buy More Worries, but Bring my Wallet is for when you have already bought it.
Nice vid Scotty, but I avoid gas guzzling vehicles.
hi scotty, how are the ford mavericks hybrids holding up now ? I'm planning to pre order a hybrid but worried about reliability and quality, do you think they will be good to keep for 10+ years ? Main reason is gas prices have gone insane so I'm only considering hybrids, thanks
When Scotty buys a car, The salesman gives him money to take the car after he convinces them that keeping the car on the lot is a detriment to their company image.
Weirdly enough, I can actually imagine this lol
An mg42 under the hood in Texas would come in handy. Lol
Ford must have snubbed Scotty at one time.
That’s what I’m thinking
410 bucks for a BMW hose. What a rip off. That alone is a deal breaker for me. The old BMW's in the 70's and 80's were good. I have and 1985 325 e with 320 K on it. No plastic crap on it.
I’m hopeful that one day somebody brings Scotty an Urus.
Scotty must be excited…he’s conducting his orchestra again, LOL 😂
