Jesus. Absolute banger. Brings back memories. Dancing on a roof in Brighton. This guy jumps from the roof over an alleyway. He made it over but that always scared the shit out of me. What if he hadn't got there. It was a high roof. We woulda just been a load of e'd up kids with a dead mate twatting around on a roof listening to aphex. I'm glad he made it. I still have dreams about that. What a pointless story. I'm boring myself now.....
That wasn't pointless. Thank you for sharing it. Music brings us all together. I'm glad he's safe... teenagers, especially high teenagers, do stupid shit
seeing all these new comments and 8 year old comments brings a tear to my eye aphex truly is timeless. People years into the future will be studying his music
For real, it’s hard to place a time on music like this. Richard makes music with so much depth, it sounds unreal to think this could have been made decades ago. Sounds like it came out today, the production quality is ABOVE god-tier.
4:28 one of the most memorable and beautiful endings of all times.... such complex melody. But then again.. it's Richard James, probably the best composer who's still alive.
Hands down my favourite electronic musician of all time. I was glad to find his music when I did. He was there when I was at my highs and lows. Brilliant man.
Not too hard, not too soft, easy on the mind, strange mellow and beautiful.. Listen to this when very tired for funny dreams or whilst stoned for an amazing head trip. Always loved this one its brilliant and unique =)
One of my favorites from Apex Twin. If not favorite. I like how it keeps changing and blending between uneasy noisy heavy action and calm funky straight up classical music breakbeat mix.
Self thought. Richard never followed music classes i'm aware of. Thats why his music is so good and pure. Nobody told him what or what not to do. His mind is without boundaries. A good lesson to all musicians as far as i am concerned.
Don't shit on formal learning lol. It's your desicion how to use theory you learn from music. With experience, you learn it regardless, however what education for music does is usually just label and explain individual concepts. You only place the roadblocks for yourself.
I haven't read/heard anything about this but wouldn't be surprised if he at least had some initial training- even his parents may have been musica and he may have picked stuff up off them-if you listen to them singing happy birthday to him on drukqs there's obvious knowledge of harmony
Its all about 3.50 and onwards. It really does take you back and brings memories of some Tudor Monarch dancing round in a play. They would of loved this.
This song is very DMT-like for me. The sounds that Richard can make remind me of what I see, feel and hear with DMT. Most specifically the intro noise and the high pitch parts that start at 3:20
He was probably;y on it when he made. It.. watch the Trash Theory channel on Richard James the electronic pioneer… he spent many days alone in his youth with electronics on acid. Psychedelic compositions are the bedrock of his work 😂
When this song really starts building just listen to all the layers and all the atmosphere. I can't even comprehend how someone could mix soo many sounds. and have it sound so good. He really is genius. I'm good at music but if I tried to mix this much it would come out rubbish.
Notice how the drums complement the melody in a very unique way? They go together, instead of the drums doing 'their thing' and the melody doing 'it's thing'. That's how music should be. Beautiful.
will always blow my mind how afx plays with spatial audio, making decisions to warp sounds around, distort entire channels, etc. pushes creativity outside of composition by including production, mastering, mixing, etc. *into* the composition - obsessed
R2D2's wife after watching C3PO's training video "How to Win Any Argument"..... "Don't get technical with me!" "You'll be malfunctioning within a day, you nearsighted scrap pile!" "Malfunctioning little twerp! This is all YOUR fault!"
The whole Analord series I do think he is in a way "breathing life" into his compositions by giving each Synth/Drum machine/Whatever it's own personality and in a way it's own voice
A huge one. Melody is so enjoyable... Drowned in a package of crazy beats giving me crazy feelings. Rich, you have to continue to do these awesome tracks. Syro was really great, but you can do better. Now I have this melody in my head for hours haha
This guy’s hi-hat samples are always so ridiculous. Analord and The Tuss are out of control on the damn hi-hats. No one does it like Richard - brilliant!
take a music theory class and your respect for Aphex twin will multiply exponentially. I didn't think I could respect a musician any more.. till I took Music 170 haha
yep, his music is very diverse, but this album in particular I'm crazy about, especially this song. Pitcard is equally as good i think. and yes, after listening to 5 of his albums I've come to the conclusion that he's a genius. you might not see it at first, but when you really start to listen to his songs, it's made clear, no doubt about it :)
jeez this is awesome.. how many times years ago i looked at the aphex twin cd in the store, among many others, and i was desperately searching for some good electronic music but couldn't find it.. i thought he'd be just like the rest and never bought it. damn i regret that now.. i'll be buyin one of his in no time

m0b1u5j3t Hell no, thats one of my favourite soundtracks. Daft punk and aphex actually both brought the electronic music revolution, thats why I like them.
m0b1u5j3t Richard is above all that. I mean, the last Tron is very bad, and it would not have worked, the universe of this Tron precisely does not stick with that of Richard. Daft Punk did their job well. And they're great artists too (Even if AFX remains a better musician).
I wish James had make Lynch's "Eraserhead" soundrack, or even Aronofsky's "Pi" soundtrack. I think his work combines with this kind of psychotic atmosphere.

Such a sweet track on the Wipeout soundtrack.
The distorted voice is in Russian for some reason - it says "Остановите /Astanavitye/ [...] [...]" Остановите means "stop!" in 2nd person plural
Notice how the drums complement the melody in a very unique way? They go together, instead of the drums doing 'their thing' and the melody doing 'it's thing'.
That's how music should be. Beautiful.
A lot of his tracks do that I noticed
probably he takes midi notes from drum tracks and puts it into melody during programming or vice versa. nice observation.
Absolute masterpiece blew my mind when i first heard and actually started crying towards the end. What a genius
