I got a first gen 11e and am really impressed with it. 8G RAM with Debian and it's capable of most things I want. The keyboard is wonderful, not sure what you're on about. Great little system, a modern netbook.

Just got the 5th gen 11e with 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD. It's surprisingly decent in speed with the Pentium Silver N5030. The keyboard incl. space-bar is OK, no problem at all. Display is OK and I have not yet noticed the viewing angle issues, so that may not be much of an issue during normal use.

N4120 is a very servicable cpu depending on your needs. On Linux this little guy should be very snappy. Quad core. New enough apu that some light emulation can be done.

Awesome video dude, I see you've got a small channel going, good luck! I also write, sci-fi and (I guess) epic dark fantasy.

Picked up a used older gen Lenovo "winbook" 300e (81fy) with N3450, 4gb RAM, and an unpopulated SATA m.2 slot, in good condition, with charger, for USD $40 shipped on eBay.
The screen is bad, though perhaps not as bad as the 11e. It lacks the "ThinkPad" brand name and requisite red nipnop. I wish it had usb-c. I would hate to use it as my main machine, but I have a desktop and a smartphone for various other use cases.
And hey, 40 bucks is 40 bucks. I will be seeing how well Linux behaves on it (audio drivers, touchscreen, etc) and tossing in an m.2 drive once NAND prices come down again.

6:05 yeah everyone in the thinkpad community will tell you to avoid the TN panels, the IPS panels are good, but the TNs in thinkpads are especially horrible. Having said that, I don't think the 11e has an ips option

I maxxed out mine by making a frankestein with a new unit with the crapola celeron + a broken donor 11e that had an i5 and 8gb of ram. I throwed a 512gb ssd (Came with 128) and it's a neat, cute machine for around 300 bucks. It is very snappy with Mint and the battery is eternal.
I am surprised about how you roasted the keyboard. I love typing on it and hate switching to my work's Macbook Pro. Mind my version is the Yoga one which seems to be chunkier and has an IPS display (So no issues with viewing angles whatsoever)

whats a step up or two from this on the cpu? these must be painful in 2023 but i still like the $100 target.

On linux you can still manage. I believe there's pentium and i3 skews. I think there were M3 skews too at one point? Servicable tbh. Atleast it's quad core and past the n3060 days.

I had this exact same laptop model when I was in middle school. I was disappointed with the terrible trackpad and the absence of a trackpoint. Also, the keyboard was literally painful to type on. However, these education model thinkpads are better than the new education chromebooks that schools are buying. These newer chromebooks have screens that are really fuzzy and hard to read (especially when taking tests). The keyboard layout is also frustrating due to the absence of the home, end, and delete keys, and the trackpads are centered with the screen rather than the spacebar.

Does anybody know if this laptop would be able to download steam and run gta san andreas?

    • @user-mb4xy6tb4l
      @user-mb4xy6tb4l 7 месяцев назад +1

Definitely not. It is more for using browser and doing simple stuff like word documents, running simple exes, and using the calculator etc. You would want a desktop PC or a gaming laptop used or on sale for good value. A cheap desktop would be about 500$ but would run pretty much everything with max graphics except some of the newer things that have high ram requirements.

On windows 2000? Because I bougt that exact same laptop last year for a curiosity experiment and that little crap could not even run the least demanding Linux GUIs. Not even with the maximum of 1gb of RAM. The underclocked pentium III just could not keep up. And the internal SSD was too small for even Windows XP.

Here in India, the market for budget to mid-range electronics is fierce. For most use cases, you don't need to spend more than $200 on anything.
Of course, people do buy more expensive items because either they need more power, or they don't know any better (don't wanna buy the cheapest thing and then regret it), or just coz they can.
Not to mention, these devices don't last very long. Build quality aside, unless you're a techy who knows how to flash a lightweight version of Windows/Android/Linux on your device, subsequent updates (designed for more powerful hardware) will render it effectively useless. Same with updates to the software you would actually use on the machine. Those aren't made with this hardware in mind.

Interesting! Yeah, I don't think web browsing requires a more powerful computer at all, and most people primarily live in their browsers.

just a personal anecdote but I had one of these in high school (around 2019-2022) and it was by far the worst laptop I've ever had lmao. at first it was OK but it aged horribly, I think once you start using more than about 1/3 of the storage it starts going off the rails
for $100 it'd be acceptable, but they charged me like $2000 and soon enough it was downright unusable for basic school assignments/essays because it was so slow and had next to no storage space, and for some reason all the software ran awfully (even just the operating system) which made even small tasks a nightmare
make of this what you will but I guess if you only had $100 you could probably do much worse, just don't be like me and spend macbook money on one of these lmfaoo

i work in IT, and ive been taking home and repairing the "trash pile" of these things for a few weeks now, currently have around 12 working out of 30 or so. im currently dualbooting a 8gb model i repaired with tiny 11 and ubuntu and its suprisingly fast. even the ones at work running standard win11 seem to do alright. much smaller than my other laptop with a way more practical battery life, and the pen comes in handy for digitally signing documents (oh so many). didnt expect to be using it almost every day
