Nothing beats having a bike’s suspension changed to suit your weight. Finally did it after years of putting up with springs that were too stiff. Absolute game changer 🍻

Hi Kate, I brought my speed twin in 2019, rode it to work, sunny days out, toured Scotland three times covering 1800 miles each time.versatile!
Added a throttle spacer to stop the snatchyness, turned the throttle Into a switch. Lovely bike good at all I wished to do and in the silver a little bit of a sleeper. Then in June this year, whilst parked at work a delivery driver reversed into it and wrote it off. Time to replace…nice pay out……went and brought another one, is the new one an improvement, yes, better braked, less snatch, more lively motor, much better front end. If you use rain mode when it’s wet, road mode for almost everything else and reserve sports mode when the road allows its not an issue. Great do it all bike.
I also have a Thruxton r and I agree with you, that’s just special. Keep the vids coming.

Those roads around Edgeworth and Haslingden are fabulous and the bike is right up my street with no quick shifter or blipper, what ever they are, no radar or tft but proper clocks. Tried a Thruxton but after a short time i had to visit a cyropractor far to focused for my older body.

I have the 2019 model. Great bike, love the engines low down torque and power. It is a smidge snatchy at low revs in sport mode so I just keep it in rain mode whilst in traffic. It's a real looker, one I'm proud to own and will be keeping.👍

I have a 23 Speed Twin and agree. For the most part the throttle is silk smooth. At low speeds and especially if the road is bumpy things can get a bit herky jerk. Think this is a combination of a big twin with a lightened crank and a very light throttle spring. Very easy to give more throttle than intended when hitting bumps. Very small nit to pick on an otherwise great bike.
I am in the USA and envious of the great scenery you have. Enjoy your reviews. Ride fast and take care!

Nice Vlog with an honest ride review, enjoyable. I have the 2023 Speed Twin 1200 and put new exhausts. Brings a smile to my face every time I ride it. Rain mode is nice and easy. Road is torkey and fun. Sport mode I call Hooligan and makes me giggle. I agree with on/off snatchy feel particularly when I hit a bump and low/mid speeds. Rear suspension not matched to power of the bike. Will likely swap with Ohlins or similar. Love the bike, will keep for a long time.

Awesome bike, I own a 2020 gen1 and couldn’t prefer something else. Yes the new one has the better suspension in the front, but not the rear. I prefer the old set-up, soft overal, over the sporty front and soft rear. I found the balance better. And next to that, the gen1 red is by far the best paintjob on any of the modern classics out there ❤.

Nice review Kate. I own a 2022 model. Mainly ride in road mode and have no complaints about throttle response. I'm small and light (65kg) and find the suspension on the comfy side. I can imagine if I was twice the weight it could be overwhelmed. I think for real world road speeds the power and torque with the sticky tyres are right in the sweet spot. It's not a track day weapon it's a great back road scatcher. The main thing is it rides great, goes well, is comfy, looks great, sounds great, and always puts a big grin on my face. What more do we want?

Suspension with all bikes, is set up for the weight of an average person. A heavier biker should know this, and although adjustable suspension might be enough, they have to be prepared to put in stronger springs soon after buying a bike. Same (but opposite) for lightweight people. They may seek out softer springs.

    Good review kate....
I have a gen 1 2020 model and really love it....the wife that also rides a cb500x also enjoys the odd spin on it as it feels physically manageable.
Sports mode is definitely snatchy around town but fine when enjoying the bike properly. Not really a bike for long rides of over 100 miles.
Got a very capable tiger 1050 sport for comfort and wind protection. x

Great review Kate. Good on you for qualifying your comments on the suspension.
SO many vloggers make a ‘one off’ statement about ride quality (and handling) whether they weigh 5 stone or 25 stone. 🤷
I think that can be off-putting to a potential buyer. Keep up the excellent work.

I’ve got the 22 ST and absolutely love it. Changed back end to Ohlins piggy back, seat etc and it’s a superb second bike (For me). Enough power to keep you smiling and get out of any trouble, whilst still being ‘sensible’. Love the grunt (changed the end cans), it just puts a smile on my face compared to my more sensible ADV.

I had a late 2021 model (so with the upgrades). The only part / spec I disliked - while I loved the twin dials - was that the speedometer was a little hard to read, though I know there's aftermarket gauges you can get that are a much cleaner design.
Best rides were a few 250+ mile days in summer. Felt so in tune with the bike by the end of those days and it handles really well.
    Very, very good bike.

Love my 2021 Speedy. Upgrades: Ohlins, decat, sports airbox. The ohlins took 12 months to get here, but have changed the bike totally, no more choppy corners, just superb. The decat gives it a lively exhaust and poppy deceleration note and breathing better in and out there is definitely a few more horses running around. I won’t be changing it anytime soon!

Watching on my Xbox so its on the TV thing. Also i got surround sound headset on. Good to see you having a blast down the local roads. The bit where youre behind the ford transit is the way i use to get home every night lol. When that was filmed though i would of been working overtime. The road to entwistle reservoir, seems a bit lumpy since the council "Fixed" it. I thought with the weather in the video youd have taken it through Ribble Valley over Jeffery hill then in towards Hornby.

    Hi Kate
It was good to get a unbiased review on the Speed Twin as I have just rebuilt a crash damaged 2016 Thruxton and a 2023 1200 Speed Twin with 94 km on the clock.
I am hoping to get it registered and give it a good test along side the Thruxton and see if my extra weight adds to the ride. As the Thruxton I have only has normal front telescopic forks and the same rear coil over shocks.
It was interesting to see your comments about the Throttle response I will check it out on both bikes.
Watching your blog reminded me just how narrow many of the the roads are in South Yorkshire where I first rode in the 60s
I am now in NZ with lots of bumpy roads and pot holes to navigate and test the suspension setups.

I've test ridden the '22 model while my Tiger GT Explorer was in for service and took it round the Yorkshire Dales.. Crackin machine !.. The only quibble would be the rather cheap rear shocks couldn't handle the bumpy roads and it got a bit bouncy.
I'm very tempted to buy one but those shocks would have to go for some descent Olins with more adjustment..

I've been lusting after the speed twin, currently own a Tiger 900, test rode the Bonneville 900, really enjoyed the handling and how low it is, the sound is awesome, the T100 is lacking in torque compared to my Tiger ... so a 1200 twin with tubeless tyres would be nice. on a separate note I do not dare ride with the visor open, to many bugs.

I've got a 2023 and agree that the throttle is a tad jerky in sport mode unless you are actually riding a bit lets say enthusiastically, around town its better in rain or road mode which is plenty, the bike is fantastic, esp with different tyres, I fitted Avon Spirit ST's, the Metz are great on a dry warm day but crap in the rain or even damp, started riding mine in early May and its now got 8,500 miles on it, people say you can't tour on them, well I rode from Stoke on Trent over to Krakow via France, Holland, Germany then back via Germany, Belgium, Holland and France with not much problem, granted the seat gives you Monkey Bum but you have to stop every 120 miles or so to tank up, I'm more used to a tank range of around 250 miles on my other bike (Harley Street Bob,, 2007 Dyna with 76,000 miles on her), the Speed Twin is fun, fast, handles, stops but can also be a gentle plodder if you want it to be, front suspension is fine but the rear can be a bit sketchy when you push on a bit but that can be sorted easily enough, all in all its a great bike and a keeper for me, love my Scarlet.

So a little snatchy and not a lot of suspension travel? Is the suspension a little clunky also?

Hi Kate, I've noticed you keep your visor up on under 40mph. It only takes a leaf, fly, debris to hit your eye to completely change your life. The main reason you keep your visor up is because of mist forming in the helmet. You can avoid this by not having the neck tube covering your mouth/ nose. Initially it would be uncomfortable change for you but the risk outweighs the reward. Great review and I'm a big fan. Thank you and all the best

I have one the clocks can be a bit hard to read as the idiot lights are not well set sometimes I leave the left indicator going as the needle covers up the left turn light at a certain speed
The throttle can be a little bit snatchy mine you the bike hasn’t quite run in yet first service is due in 15 miles

I know they are completely different bikes but I'm between this and the Street Triple RS for my next bike. My eyes are just drawn to both at the shop. If only I could have both!

How does the low speed handling compare to the Thruxton? I had the 900 Thruxton for almost a decade and the only complaint I had was how sluggish it was in parking lots and very low speed maneuvering. Sounds like the weight of the Speed Twin takes a little pushing in the corners like the Thruxton, but would love to hear your thoughts on the slow speeds. The thought of a Thruxton like ride suitable for longer distances is appealing in the Speed Twin if the slow speed handling is also an improvement.

Throttle drove me nuts on mine to the point I sold the bike, found it awful to ride on a constant throttle around 30 - 40mph. Dealer told me it was due to Euro 5 regs. Great review though 👍

Having had adjustable suspension adjusted to my weight for years I can't go back, I might be better off with a thruxton and handlebar kit to achieve this type of ride

Hip cramp yes, but for me it's related to multiple operations on a broken femur. Sports bikes are off the menu for me these days.

Got mine this weekend. Gear change is amazing, holds a line great. Brakes are pretty decent. Cant comment on the torque as when mine gets to 4000 rpm it dies, so back to the shop it goes, haven’t even done 20 miles on it so pretty gutted. Bike sounds great tho when its not trying to buckaroo me off it

I love these type of bikes, but the main issue I have with them is the price. For what you get, I think they're a bit overpriced when compared to other bikes. Obviously, the manufacturers are tugging on the old heartstrings! I was dead set on either a Triumph Speed Twin 1200 or a Kawasaki Z900RS. I decide to go with the Kawasaki Z900RS SE, the version with the Öhlins rear unit-yes, that's definitely the bike for me, and you won't persuade me otherwise, I'm sticking to my guns! Then the Suzuki go and announce the GSX-S1000GX! 😲
Looking at that bike, it does everything I need a bike to do, the specification is miles better than a Kawasaki Z900RS, or a Triumph Speed Twin 1200, and the launch price is £14,499! The Kawasaki Z900RS SE is £13,149. I plan to keep my next bike for a while, so I think a modern classic will have to wait for now-they are lovely, though! 💔

I can confirm the throttle is awful at low speeds. I commute to work on mine in London where they are a lot of 20mph zones a nightmare, Rain mode can help The only way around it is to fit a power commander tune

Ah yes, your weight problem.... Christmas is looming up upon us, an ideal oppertunity to add a few pounds to that frame of yours. I mean, if you wanna test a bike properly for us, then we need a good asessement of the suspension as well !
Another good rider perspective of a good looking bike... actually, you fair up quite well yourself, as well.
All in all, top marks for the both of ya. Thanks.
