- Total frigate warship strength by naval power
The Frigate ship type is a multi-role, general purpose ocean-going vessel utilized for fleet surface ship protection against enemy surface combatants or incoming aerial threats. Frigates are outfitted with advanced sonar, sensory and tracking systems that allow her crew to hunt down enemy submarines. Nearly all notable naval powers make use of the multi-role frigate in their inventory.

Frigates are difficult to compare, they vary greatly in size and capabilities. Just the numbers mean very little. Add to that the fact that almost all European coastal counties are NATO members and use their navies jointly during exercises and would certainly do so in case of war.
Chile too NATO standard. Joint missions all the time. Also, we bought two new type 23 from the UK. We have 10 modern frigates and Peru have old, old ships.

For everyone saying about USN Frigates, at this point in time, USN doesn't have Frigates.
They have Cruisers, Destroyers and Littoral Combat Ships (Corvettes).
Soon, they will have Frigates through the FFG(X) program.
It’s all relative. The German 125 frigates are over 7.200 tons and with their armament most countries would call them destroyers. Same with the upcoming 180 frigates. They will have close to 10.000 but Germans would never call them destroyers because of... well... nazis...

@@MG-bs5mr I don't know. But in the 20's, Britain needed a fleet of 60! light cruisers to protect their trade routes around the world, something their force of 13 Type-23 frigates do now (minus those used to protect the fleet). So maybe 7, can do that same job.
@@rocketassistedgoat1079 it's a rather different world now though.
Britain no longer has an empire to defend and there is much better collaboration between (for example) NATO allies.
Also naval warfare has changed quite dramatically; radar, sonar, helicopters and modern weapons have extended the use of frigates well beyond their role seen 100 years ago.
My first ship, USS Gary (FFG-51)... and actually my second ship, USS Callaghan (DDG-994), both went to the Taiwanese Navy. I do hope those two ships served the Taiwanese well.
Taiwan Navy PFG-1115 and DDG-1802
Thanks for your service
both over forty years old.
I was a frigate sailor in the USN. My first ship USS Taylor (FFG 50) and my second ship was USS Stephen W Groves (FFG 29). They were decommissioned decedes after I left the Navy.
The US made several of the Australian and Turkey frigates. US had quite a few at one point I think the hull numbers went all the way up into the FFG 60s. Most being built in the late 70s and an answer to submarine warfare, they have all been decommissioned because their role is not as needed and easily replaced by newer platforms.
Until "recently" the RAN operated Oliver Hazard Perry FFG07 (modified) Frigates and Charles F Adams Class DDG's. We now operate a mix of ANZAC Class Frigates (8) which are based on the German Meko Type 200 and Hobart Class Air Warfare Destroyers (3) which are based on the Navantia F100 Frigate design. Work is underway to replace the ANZAC Class with 9 "Hunter" Class Frigates based on BAE's Type 26 Global Combat Shipe design - The Type 26 will also be in service with the Royal Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy - overall I think around 30 hulls all up. There has been some talk about the RAN acquiring another 3 Hobart Class AWD's but this probably won't happen - our economy and capacity to crew so many ships is limited although a major recruiting program has started here in Australia. The RAN is also in the process of acquiring an as yet unknown class of Nuclear powered submarines to replace the Collins class boats which have served us so well. A new Class of Off Shore Patrol Vessels are also in production (Arafura Class) and the same hull is being considered for a Mine Hunter role. All in all the Royal Australian Navy is going through major changes and although relatively small it is very capable.
@@rodpope7838 a part of the history I had to learn about the FFG was the ships that were made for Austrailia. And also how Turkey acquired several of them early on. Real cool info for sure. Thanks
The statement made about removing the OHP Class from service was that the decision was based on their near total lack of combat capability.

AFAIK it’s technically correct: 1x122 class, 4x123 class, 3x124 class and 2x125 class. Though with their size most other countries would classify the 125s as destroyers. But then again, the 130 corvettes are big enough that most countries would call them frigates... but it’s all relative. The 122s are old and probably in bad condition, the 125s probably still suffer from technical teething troubles and the upcoming 180 „frigates“ with their up to 10.000 tons won’t be in service for another seven or eight years... but I guess most navies have to deal with shit like this...

Largely a meaningless comparison. Frigates can range from under 3000 tons to the latest projected ones at 9400 tons.
Yes, Canada has 0 Destroyers... yet, Canada's Frigates would be called Destroyers in other navies.
The person making this list needs to sit down and come up with an explicit definition for "Frigate" that can only apply to frigates... not to corvettes or to destroyers.
@@aralornwolf3140 Frigates carry a complement of marines, destroyers don't.
@@CZ350tuner That's not true for most navies...
@@aralornwolf3140 It really is insane. some are now suggesting the new Type 26 might end up at 9400 tons. The original modern use of the term frigate applied to a ship that was under 1500 tons and heavy cruisers were to be 10k tons. Not that is anything new the original sailing frigates started at around 260 tons and ended up with the American super frigates at 1500 tons or the British response at 1550 tons. Maybe it is good that we can look back and humans are consistent.
@@jonmce1 ,
Humans are consistent in their consistencies, lol.
At least I know David Weber's Honorverse is realistic. Battlecruisers had a mass of 350k to 450k tonnes. Battleships were around the 2m tonnes. So when a navy started to build Battecruisers in the 2.5m tonne range, due to advancements in offensive capabilities that system defenses could have making any Battlecruiser smaller than that a wreck before achieving their objectives, are they really Battlecruisers?
Of course, in his series most top tier navies stopped using corvettes and frigates as their offensive and defensive capabilities were slightly better than a LAC (fighter analogue) and had almost the same size of crew as a destroyer making their losses more costly than just using a bunch of LACs or a few destroyers (depending on situation).
I haven’t had such a good laugh for a long time
Numbers don't count for much, what's more important is how modern the frigates are, and what weapons they have. Some of these countries have old delapidated second-hand frigates and they still count as one. Also, in case people are wondering where is the US - they decommissioned their last frigate in 2015, and only run destroyers, which are generally larger and more capable. In fact many of the navies shown here are running the second-hand frigates sold off by the US.
(Correction: meant to say the US use destroyers for the roles that frigates perform)

From what I have read in an article, America has already abandoned frigate building because destroyers can do the function of a frigate. Why build frigates? If you can build destroyers which are more capable and has a larger room for weapons in comparison to a frigate.
destroyers are more expensive. and countries like australia, new zealand, germany, spain and the netherlands have frigates that are destroyers in disguise, such as the omega class, anzac class, sachsen class and the alvaro de bazan class. they pack the same punch as destroyers but with less size, capacity and weight. and are much cheaper than destroyers. heavy frigates are a much better choice over destroyers for navies that cant afford destroyers
The United States has rebuilt frigates, because if all are expensive destroyers will lead to many destroyers wasted in low-intensity patrol duties to make maintenance overwhelmed, Arleigh Burke class of two serious collisions, the U.S. Navy after the investigation were found, the U.S. Navy actually lost the ability to fight Arleigh Burke class at sea and repeatedly appear to show that this is not an isolated case.
