type 054A is a 4000ton, while the rest are the 5500+ tons, some even as heavy as destroyers. However, the role they play is different as the 054A didnt need to be heavily armed, playing anti subs and support for the main combatant, type 052D and type 055 DDG. While to some countries, the frigates is main surface combatant and thus heavier and better armed.
Honestly the Type 054A is really the only frigate that plays the traditional role of a frigate via armament, tonnage, and especially price. Some of the frigates on the list are upwards to $800 million USD each, which China can nearly make a type 055 cruiser or almost two type 052D destroyers for the same price. I feel like a lot of nations are throwing money down the drain on these frigates when a little more cash can get them destroyers which are wayyyy more powerful all around
@Louis the T26 isn't even in service yet, and its wayyyyyy more expensive than the Type 054A for uncertain improvements in sub hunting. And if you mean the T23 frigate, the Type 054A has got all the same type of sonars as the T23 while having two more anti-sub weapons systems (4 systems total, including the Yu-8 anti-sub missile from VLS) versus only 2 for the T23. And nations upgrading to destroyers for a little extra cash makes sense from cost standpoint because destroyers are better multipurpose vessels than frigates due to more weaponry and more powerful radars. Those nations treat their frigates as multipurpose ships rather than sub hunters anyway, so why not get a destroyer instead?
@Jared Evans Weapons is a very minor part of what makes a ship good at ASW 😂. Both T23 and T26 are far quieter than 054. 054 is diesel making them very noisy vessels, CODLAG and CODLOG of T23 and T26 make them amongst the quietest and T26 the quietest ASW vessel out there. The primary ASW weapon of a ship is its helicopter. The 20km odd range of ASROC and presumably the Chinese equivalent is dwarfed by the 60km+ range of a heavyweight torpedo. This will be a bigger issue for 054A especially due to its diesel propulsion. Merlin is also the best ASW helicopter in the world. The radar on 054A is reverse engineered from Russia and is inferior to Artisan. As are the sonars on 054A. Multi purpose destroyers do not really exist. All multi purpose destroyers trade off ASW. Arleigh Burkes for example are very noisy. The closest would be 2 AAW FREMMs of the MN but they trade off AAW capability. The closest ship to see it is T26 Aussie variant but they are having lots of issues with the fact that if you add a large radar on a ship that’s not an AAW vessel, top weight is going to be an issue.
Gorshkov is good. Super gorshkov could be a destroyer. Russia should focus most on advanced corvettes around 350 feet long and focus on large vls units. Including forgoing a main gun and possibly a hangar to maximize missle units. Also should try and make it around 100 million dollars. Imagine a navy with several hundred modern missle corvettes on par with a small destroyer.
Bro 350 feet long and forgoing a main gun and Hanger for VLS? Like why? You are more limited because of the vls and have to use expensive missiles against everything that the small caliber weapons (up to 30mm) cant defeat. Also you limit your ASW capability because without the hanger you loose your best ASW weapon. And only 100 million Dollars is Impossible because vls are quit expensive and you need modern Equipment to make the most of it. And then we cant forget that missiles cost extra 😉
Main Gun is indespinsable you know if The ship want to dispose Naval hazard, or Naval mines. would you want to spend Missile ? so are some more "diplomatic" situation, like warning shoot.
The russian navy is building the ship you described, the Derzky class corvette, but it is considered by many russian experts to be a failure, being as expensive as a frigate, smaller and less seaworthy. LCS moment. What russia needs is multipurpose ships like the Steregushiy or Gremyashiy, while the missile platform role is carried out by smaller corvettes. Grigorovich is the ASW ship, while the Gorshkov is basically a small multipurpose destroyer acting as the flagship of small fleets and replacing the Sovremennys
You are wrong. Project 22350 is one of the few really well-developed concerts in the Russian Navy, which is amazing. Therefore, she should focus on building this particular ship and reducing the number of other types in favor of unification. A helipad and hangar are also extremely necessary, since ships are blind without AWACS, and Ka-31 type AWACS helicopters will give good situational awareness + anti-submarine helicopters are always needed

Generally amongst modern ships, displacement is no longer necessarily the defining factor in ship class. It’s now becoming more to do with role (at least in western navies) with Frigates being ASW focused and Destroyers being more AA focused. But I agree the type 26 shouldn’t be here because of when it goes into service. Especially when the current type 23s are still very capable and probably deserving of a top 10 ranking.

Your assessment of Type 054 A is off the mark. You will find that aesa radar and supersonic missiles combined with a serious ASW capability 054 A is head and shoulders above its more expensive competiters
Today's frigates have the size of destroyers. Meaning of frigates and destroyers don't matter anymore. Earlier these used to have specific role and lack other roles but today both of these types can do all roles. Today's frigates are multirole. So instead saying 8000 ship a frigate and another 7500 ton ship as destroyer, we can just say 'warships' otherwise will have to make clear distinction that a ship over 5000 ton is a destroyer.
After your last video I thought that the type 054B would be somewhere on top or at least mentioned. It is still in production but will probably be fielded before some other entries of this list (e.g. type 026, Nilgiri class). Why is type 054A listed but not 054B?
Probably because the type of VLS and missile load out has not been disclosed which out significantly affect the ranking. I also don't see how the type 54b would be ranked ahead of the type 26 UK frigate since it is on the same level as a type 54d destroyer.
I still find it funny just how variable ship class definitions are and have been historically. I mean, destroyers have gone from being like 500 ton escort ships to 9,700 ton capital ships.

If you putting down type 26 on the list which won’t be in service until 2026 or later then why don’t you put 054B on the list? It’s going to service later this year
It's a reasonable question. We know far more about the Type 26 than the Type 054B, at least based on official information. The UK likes to show off what it will have, while China does not. So it is far easier to ascertain a ranking for the Type 26. Also, the Type 054B may well be launched this year, but it is unlikely to enter service this year - ships especially new ones need to be fitted out, moor-tested, and sea-trialled, etc.
Some of these ships are basicly destroyers. This difference between destroyer and frigate is slowly becoming similar to the distinction between battleships and battlecruisers of 1930-40s that is to say: very hard to tell. Great vedio! My favorite frigates are the Spanish and British ones. Spanish one has the first ever aigius system on a frigate while the british ones are really multi-purpua-budget destroyers.
Usually the difference is anti air capability, Destroyer should have AGEIS equivalent system that can cover a very large area, while frigate only had medium range air defence system. But there are many exceptions, the frigate from Spain in this video had AGEIS system, and it actually become the Hobart class destroyer for Australia, those are almost identical ships.

how about any ship over 7000 tons? There are a lot of genuine frigates between 5000-7000 tons that are comparable. Above 7000 tons we enter a new league.
Spain is a peaceful country that will not build ships that have the name of destroying. The frigate sounds peaceful, that is why Spain will continue building frigates even if they are 14,000 tons.
the nilgiri class mainly only solved partially the problem with how the different radar systems from different countries interfered with each other and stuff.

Pakistan Navy Type 05AP frogates are better equipped in all domains either we talk about radars, supersonic missile, Air defense.
@@jaredevans8263 But 054A is also inferior to hunting subs than a T26.
Why 'upgrade' to a destroyer when they perform different roles?
@Jared Evans
Weapons is a very minor part of what makes a ship good at ASW 😂.
Main Gun is indespinsable you know
if The ship want to dispose Naval hazard, or Naval mines. would you want to spend Missile ?
so are some more "diplomatic" situation, like warning shoot.
@Sterilize poor indians, muslims smaller than 1164 project, lol
Actually the new n1 is type 054B. Packed to the brim with everything you can find on the 055, just smaller
the iver huitfeldt does definetly not have sm6 missiles, wish it had but where did you get that from
1. Admiral Gorhkov class - The numbers shown in the video are for the future versions of this ship. That particular version will enter service sometime in 2030.
2. Type 26 - Again another ship that will enter service in 2028. Even its weapons package isnt clear. Further at 8000 tons its a Destroyer, and should be ranked alongside other 8000 tons class ships when commissioned.
3.Alvaro de Bazan - A 20+ year old design, noway its in the Top 5. Was a great ship when commissioned and still among the better ones....should be in the Top 10...but Top 5? Nope...let alone Top 3.
4. Iver hutfield Class - Now thats a good ship, no complaints on its rank.
5. Nilgiri class - Another ship that will actually enter service in 2024, and not 2023. Great ship non the less, could be the best Frigate in the world when it enters service in 2024.
So basically 3 of the Top 5 Frigates arent in service today...
If i have to rank today as of 2023 , it would be
1. FREMM
2. Admiral Gorkshkov
3. Iver Hutfield
4. Ze Provicen Class
5. Sachen Class
6. Shivalik Class
7. Alvaro de Bazan Class
8.Fridtjof Nansen-class
9.Mogami Class
10. Admiral Grigorovich Class
11. Type54A
Makes sense
yeah, this video is total nonsense
You lie and desinform people in your anit-Russian histeria. God will punish your for fakes. Admiral Gorshkov class frigates with exactly those numbers already serve in Russian Navy. Two of them - Admiral Gorshkov and Admiral Kasatonov already serve in Russian Northern Fleet. This year another one will join Russian Navy - Admiral Golovko. In 2024 another two of them will be ready - Admiral Amelko and Admiral Chichagov. Entire program of building of those the most powerful frigates in the world will be finished in 2026. So, you just fantasize about weakness of Russia like Hitler.
How about the Constellation class ? I think it is also a forrmidable class
It’s FREMM at #8
It has a more powerful radar compared to those used on Australian/UK Type 26 frigates with the exception of SPY-7 on Canadian Type 26 and SMART-L radars on other frigates. It's like having SPY-1 on Burke class destroyers but with much more versatility. In terms of VLS cells and weaponry Australian/Canadian Type 26 and US Constellation are similar so they could be tied for the same spot. Also wondering why Germany's Sachsen class is last. 🤔
@@johnsilver9338 Sachsen class frigates will be over 20 years on their keels when either the Constellation or type 26 are seaworthy . That is the likely answer
@@johnsilver9338 don't worry, we will soon come back, i mean the Italian sub 212, Germany has developed it, the Italian changed a few parts, anyway, this are the best non nuclear subs. Our Government has cut every budget, from navy to army, but thanks to Russia now we will reinvest in our forces!
It's a modified FREMM, It Is even built by Italian Fincantieri through It subsidiary Company Marinette Marine in Wisconsin
Your assessment of Type 054 A is off the mark. I suggest you make a compative datasheet of capabilities of all the frgates except range and spead (because those are immaterial during a stand off engagement).
@@cabasadefogo9533 it's the type 52D destroyer better still the 52DL destroyer. Stop dreaming type 26 would not get anywhere near the coast of China.

I still find it funny just how variable ship class definitions are and have been historically. I mean, destroyers have gone from being like 500 ton escort ships to 9,700 ton capital ships.
Who gonna tell him about the type 055 at 13,000 tons💀

Your channel is very underrated. I guess people can't cope with facts nowadays and don't watch videos that say something good (and true) about something Russian-made.
Perhaps some people can't cope that Russian made equipment is extremely overhyped
@@Jon.A.Scholt Eurasia Naval Insight: "Admiral Gorshkov has an excellent balance of anti-sub, air defense and offensive capabilities" how is he 'over-hyping' the ship? Looks like a pretty level playing field to me....They are all about the same standard...? So numerical advantage is the deciding factor in a naval battle?
Yeah, I would probably say so, although the Zircons and supersonic missiles will give the Russian and Indian ships an edge I think
More than numbers, it will be the quality of the ship's crews that will determine an outcome. Was so at Plataea in 479BC is so now.
Frigates taste like Destroyer. Imagine if Admiral Gorshkov bring 32 VLS Zircon 😱
Bro that would be a super beast mode
054A is a small trawler with 42 completed vessels. For fishing efficiency, we also need 32 054B medium-sized trawlers (6200 tons). These fishing boats are toys, don't worry.
Cry harder, mate. Crying is a brilliant coping mechanism.

Very good video!!
Good video, but you cannot include frigates that hasn´t been build. Doesn´t make sense. I am talking about frigate type 26 ok UK.
But there are many exceptions, the frigate from Spain in this video had AGEIS system, and it actually become the Hobart class destroyer for Australia, those are almost identical ships.
wait until Gorshkov-M comes out with 8000ton displacement and 100 VLS on board.
All these 7000-8000 ton frigates have barely 40-50 VLS. and yes it will be still be called frigate.
block 2 Gorshkov (not M) with the same 5000ton displacemnt will have 60 VLS (block 1 have 16 + 32 VLS)
For the brits it seems like they have to choose between new ships or food and energy in the near future.
Is it just more or are Royal Navy ships generally slow, like 26 knots compared to other ships having 30+ knots
Honestly, most of their equipment is slower than their counter parts, such as the Challenger.
They are often quite conservative with these estimates. I for one know some of the RN ships will go a fair bit faster than what is claimed.
May be posting this prematurely as I have not finished the vid. Germany has an awrsome Frigate it was just too big at first to be classified as a frigate.
It's also very lightly armed.
Comprehensive presentation .👍
The Admiral Gorshkov is very capable and can even stand up to most destroyers out there

What other ship in the world currently uses hypersonic anti-ship missiles? And uses them in real combat operations. Admiral Gorshkov class made all the other ships hopelessly old.
A quick question: Do the hypersonic missiles enter supersonic mode in their terminal phase? Or they don't have to slow down before the impact?
Well the optimal doesn't have to but all that radar use would need to because if not they can't really do the job because the Plasma building around the missile interferes with the radar. This is also why the idea of plasma stealth was created.
@@kqckeforyou4433 Plasma stealth is highly debated as actually being a thing. Additionally, the Zircon has been tested and has taken out targets, so clearly it works and if Plasma stealth is a thing, it has been overcome.
