Outrun soundtrack on Yamaha DX7 DEXED VST

  • Outrun soundtrack Passing Breeze as you've never heard it before! Remixed using Dexed VST plugin emulating the sound of the legendary 1983 Yamaha DX7 FM synthesizer.
    The original arcade hardware also used a primitive form of Yamaha FM synthesis so this version has similar sounds but in much higher fidelity.
    So enjoy once again the sound of the Yamaha DX7 electric piano and bass patches, put through a touch of TAL Chorus (an emulation of the Roland Juno-6 analog chorus).
    Sega Out Run (アウトラン Auto Ran) arcade music was provided by Hiroshi Kawaguchi, who had previously composed soundtracks for other games designed by Suzuki, and who was part of Sega's official band at the time, the S.S.T. Band. Out Run was the first video arcade game that allowed the user to choose the background music. The soundtrack comprised both jazz music (similar in style to that of fusion band Casiopea) and Latin/Caribbean music (similar to Miami Sound Machine). In all, three selectable tracks were featured: Passing Breeze, Splash Wave and Magical Sound Shower. An additional track, Last Wave, played at the final score screen.
    Here is some information about the sound chips used in the original arcade hardware, as you can see FM synthesis is used here too.
    Sound CPU: Zilog Z80 @ 4 MHz (8/16‑bit instructions, 0.58 MIPS)
    Sound chips: 2 chips, 24 channels, 24‑bit bus width
    - FM synthesis chip: Yamaha YM2151 @ 4 MHz (8 FM channels, 8‑bit bus width)
    - PCM sampling chip: SegaPCM 315‑5218 Sound Controller @ 4/16 MHz (stereo)

    IDK, but the electronic drumkits from the FM or sampler chips used 20-30 years ago give me such a comfy feel.

      hi selen! i was aiming for a more hi-fi sound here though, hence the studio quality reverb and other fx, and the dx7 sound itself is much cleaner than the fm chips on outrun. listen to the original soundtrack after my version and you'll be amazed how shitty and grainy the sounds are. but as you say, all part of the retro charm!

      Pretty nice to hear FM sounding so good. How did you do the drums and I can definitely hear you channelling Stevie Wonder here haha. Brilliant work my friend and I enjoy your channel.

    Great job - sounds awesome!
    Small thing: 2:13 That chord should be a E6 (C#m7/E), not a E7 and 2:23 should be a un-colored F# (without 7).

    How weird for this to pop up today...I just sold my stand up full size Outrun arcade game 3 weeks to today (Sept 9)! I can tell you your version of the soundtrack sounds much better than what came out of the actual cab! Good job.....

      must be awesome to have owned the arcade, did you complete? never in my wildest dreams as a kid did i think it would be possible to own your own machine, or play every arcade game on your home computer.

    • @HeyItsMe52
      @HeyItsMe52 6 лет назад

      Exactly!...Not long after getting my drivers license THIS was the flagship game at the arcade (and afterburner)....I never thought back then I'd own the actual arcade many years later....Unfortunately I never made it past stage 4, I was close enough to see the banner to stage 5 in the screen but I got busy at work and quit playing....Next thing I know it's years later and it's buried in the back of the shed...I was recently cleaning out the building and decided it was time to move it on to someone that would use it.

    As someone to whom the Out Run soundtrack has been a continuing source of inspiration and memories for years (it's my favorite soundtrack ever, and has been since I was a kid), I can't express enough how beautiful this sounds!
    You've managed to keep the original spirit all the way through, to the point that I would fully believe if someone told me that this is an official version. Seriously, great job, thank you!
    Would you mind telling which patches you used for Passing Breeze? Besides the DX bass, I mean. Everything sounds great through the chorus, by the way.

    • @WoodyPianoShack
      @WoodyPianoShack  6 лет назад +1

      thanks for the appreciation. Here are the sounds
      08 E.PIANO 1 (one of the classics)
      15 BASS 1 (yes, That Bass)
      22 GLOCKENSPL (another factory sound)
      01 BRASS 1 (the very first preset)
      01 SYN-LEAD 2 (the next three used for leads, for variation and layers)
      12 SYNTHBRASS
      02 SYN-LEAD 3
