hi selen! i was aiming for a more hi-fi sound here though, hence the studio quality reverb and other fx, and the dx7 sound itself is much cleaner than the fm chips on outrun. listen to the original soundtrack after my version and you'll be amazed how shitty and grainy the sounds are. but as you say, all part of the retro charm!
Pretty nice to hear FM sounding so good. How did you do the drums and I can definitely hear you channelling Stevie Wonder here haha. Brilliant work my friend and I enjoy your channel.
This is bloody gorgeous. Would love to hear some other tracks from OutRun (or any other SEGA game for that matter!). Can't believe I missed this first time around.
I think this OST sounds more like the "T-Square" band rather than "Cassiopea". Anyway, I very like .. both bands! =) P.S. One of the fav games from the junior school, `cause...yes - super soundtrack!
How weird for this to pop up today...I just sold my stand up full size Outrun arcade game 3 weeks to today (Sept 9)! I can tell you your version of the soundtrack sounds much better than what came out of the actual cab! Good job.....
must be awesome to have owned the arcade, did you complete? never in my wildest dreams as a kid did i think it would be possible to own your own machine, or play every arcade game on your home computer.
Exactly!...Not long after getting my drivers license THIS was the flagship game at the arcade (and afterburner)....I never thought back then I'd own the actual arcade many years later....Unfortunately I never made it past stage 4, I was close enough to see the banner to stage 5 in the screen but I got busy at work and quit playing....Next thing I know it's years later and it's buried in the back of the shed...I was recently cleaning out the building and decided it was time to move it on to someone that would use it.
Hi woody I did not know you liked video games too. The soundtrack to outrun2019 is incredible it was sequel to outrun on sega genesis . Always wished I could learn how to play it on keyboard hope you get a chance to listen to it
Give us so many ideas mainly 'couse so after that it's soon nephew top gear was borning. Woody i forgot to say that you are a genius, thank you, keep flying. If you can, i ask you, try FS1R, you'll be impressed. For me by now, Thumb up!
Was that you driving or blondie ! , hard to tell with the music pumping in the car , must have been blondie because the car crashed , nice work Woody and a brilliant little history lesson too ! , big thumbs way up ! 😎AK 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🍺👏🍺👏👏🍺🍺👏👏🍺🍺👏🍺🍺👏👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺🍺👏👏🍺🍺👏👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺🍺🍺🍺👏🍺🍺👏👏🍺👏🍺🍺👏👏🍺🍺👏👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺🍺👏🍺👏👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺🍺👏👏🍺👏👏👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺🍺👏🍺👏🍺👏👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺🍺👏🍺👏🍺👏👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺🍺👏👏🍺👏🍺🍺👏👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺🍺👏👏🍺🍺👏👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺👏🍺
As someone to whom the Out Run soundtrack has been a continuing source of inspiration and memories for years (it's my favorite soundtrack ever, and has been since I was a kid), I can't express enough how beautiful this sounds! You've managed to keep the original spirit all the way through, to the point that I would fully believe if someone told me that this is an official version. Seriously, great job, thank you! Would you mind telling which patches you used for Passing Breeze? Besides the DX bass, I mean. Everything sounds great through the chorus, by the way.
thanks for the appreciation. Here are the sounds 08 E.PIANO 1 (one of the classics) 15 BASS 1 (yes, That Bass) 22 GLOCKENSPL (another factory sound) 01 BRASS 1 (the very first preset) 01 SYN-LEAD 2 (the next three used for leads, for variation and layers) 12 SYNTHBRASS 02 SYN-LEAD 3
Woody Piano Shack Well... I finally gave it a try myself. Being a beginner, I obviously have a LOT to learn about using DEXED and Cakewalk. But I think it turned out pretty decently. You can see it on my channel.
Pretty cool! I played this game in arcade a long ago. Do you know a racing game called Jaguar XJ220 from the Amiga computer? It has one of the best bass melody in a game ever, on par with Outrun, if not better. With FM Bass should sound amazing.
Hey Woody, what with me being from the UK (as well) I keep thinking it is the blonde woman driving the car. (ladies please close your eyes, because this might be a bit sexist) but I had to laugh when it hit the board and turned over several times. Oh, and nicely done on the music too Woody.
Hi Woody! I was born in 79 so I'm from the same era. Thank God for MAME and VSTs so those of us with limited space (and money) can reminisce of those simpler times. Love the channel. Cheers from the USA!
Hey Woody, have you lost your voice mate? Your last 4 videos have had no speech on them! Love the videos though. I had outrun on the Atari 1040 ST many years ago.
hi paul, thanks for bringing that up! yeah, probably even longer since you saw my face, count yourselves lucky... :D been keeping a low profile and releasing stuff from the backlog whilst i decide what new content to make. this song i made a few days ago though, but I thought you probably heard enough of my ramblings by now, glad you enjoyed the outrun :)
not much, i have an MAME arcade cab that I built, see separate video, but I just play DK with the kids occasionally. Big fan of OR back in the day, but never got past the 3rd stage :)
IDK, but the electronic drumkits from the FM or sampler chips used 20-30 years ago give me such a comfy feel.
hi selen! i was aiming for a more hi-fi sound here though, hence the studio quality reverb and other fx, and the dx7 sound itself is much cleaner than the fm chips on outrun. listen to the original soundtrack after my version and you'll be amazed how shitty and grainy the sounds are. but as you say, all part of the retro charm!

Great job - sounds awesome!
Small thing: 2:13 That chord should be a E6 (C#m7/E), not a E7 and 2:23 should be a un-colored F# (without 7).
👍very clear sound👍
This is bloody gorgeous. Would love to hear some other tracks from OutRun (or any other SEGA game for that matter!). Can't believe I missed this first time around.
Nicely done Woody! Great hearing you do video game music, using the Dexed VST hehe.
Love this song and DX Bass.
That is a pretty chunky bass sound, yeah.
I think this OST sounds more like the "T-Square" band rather than "Cassiopea". Anyway, I very like .. both bands! =)
P.S. One of the fav games from the junior school, `cause...yes - super soundtrack!
I think it sounds like Casiopea... Splash Wave sounds like The Square
How weird for this to pop up today...I just sold my stand up full size Outrun arcade game 3 weeks to today (Sept 9)! I can tell you your version of the soundtrack sounds much better than what came out of the actual cab! Good job.....

Outrun brings backs so many memories. This sounds great.
This is excellent but please do MAGICAL SOUND SHOWER
all three are really great! but i doubt i'll revisit outrun again, so many other games... :)
damn. ok -_- still excellent!
I always chose Splash Wave when playing the game....To each his own...LOL....Ted
I'm more of a Splash Wave person myself.
I bet the marimbas would be hard as nails to do properly.
Love this! It's almost like somebody turbocharged the sega YM chip
i can promise at least one more... :)
Excellent . So many good video game soundtracks were created with FM . Top man !!!
I approve of the choice of instruments in this one! Nicely done mate!
Nice work
Really so 80s .i love it!
Sounds awesome to my nostalgic ears. Great piece of software the Dexed VST. :)
The sound of the 80's. Pure nostalgia! Bliss in its highest form! 😍 All the synth sounds in this video have been made with Dexed, right?
My childhood. was 2 yrs old when the arcade came out in the late 80's
Simply excellent
Vera cool ! Please play all out run music! Love vintage game music
Excellent! I love playing that game! :) So smooth too on the Dexed version! :)
Sound just like your DX7 Sam?
Outruns soundtrack is amazing
Great I'd like to hear more of this.
Excellent cover woody, it sounds perfect!
Loving it ! Crazy idea !
Hi woody I did not know you liked video games too. The soundtrack to outrun2019 is incredible it was sequel to outrun on sega genesis . Always wished I could learn how to play it on keyboard hope you get a chance to listen to it
Nice Woody! I'm taking good care of your D-20 that I bought from you ;) I'm trying to organize my patches, I'll post something soon.
that's awesome to hear, glad it went to a good home :)
beautiful sounds
This is so awesome downloaded the vst cuz of this
omg its so cheesy ! in a great way. That bass sound is on point !
Nice! Also for the drums the game used the Yamaha RX11’s sounds.
interesting! i used the GM drums built into windows 7.... :D
Are they roland tr707 samples?
@AMD Delidded I was focused on bass and snare drum. I know cymbals on the real hardware tr-707 sounds completely different than these ones.
The Oberheim DMX is heard.
Give us so many ideas mainly 'couse so after that it's soon nephew top gear was borning. Woody i forgot to say that you are a genius, thank you, keep flying. If you can, i ask you, try FS1R, you'll be impressed. For me by now, Thumb up!
yeah, need to find one, cheers!
Awesome! Love this
I think that the best clown of Dx7 is Dexed.I use it very much in my Daw..It sounds great...
Perfect! Well done Woody!
Was that you driving or blondie ! , hard to tell with the music pumping in the car , must have been blondie because the car crashed , nice work Woody and a brilliant little history lesson too ! , big thumbs way up !

hi ak, i was doing the driving, yeah i suck, but try driving a testarossa using cursor keys. even harder with a hot blonde by your side... :D
Love it. The FM sounds so rich and iconic. Brilliantly played. Great video too. Were you also playing the game?
that was my driving yes, don't think i've ever made it past the 3rd stage. kinda hard with cursor keys though.
WOAAAAAAAAH
THIS IS AWESOME
I remember thinking at the time that graphics couldn’t possibly get any better 😂
I played this game to death as a kid. Forgot all about it
Nice :) So next should be Sonic-The-Hedgehog :)
thanks for the request... stay tuned.
Woody go and buy a DX5! Or at least buy a DX7 to keep. I love your videos, show them to everyone!
thanks for sharing! maybe one day another dx7, although it's quicker to produce these tracks with plugins... :o
Woody Piano Shack keep up the awesome work!
Did Yamaha ever make a 16 track polytimbral FM synth???
Poly keyboard, not the rackmounts.

12 SYNTHBRASS
02 SYN-LEAD 3
Thank you so much for letting me know! It really sounded great. And, again, thanks for sharing your version!
I wanna hear “Last Wave” on the iconic E. Piano patch, seeing how the original seems to utilize it.
noted!
Woody Piano Shack Well... I finally gave it a try myself. Being a beginner, I obviously have a LOT to learn about using DEXED and Cakewalk. But I think it turned out pretty decently. You can see it on my channel.
If sega genesis had a reverb circuit for resonance both sound would be pretty similar
Exelente video chido one
Comfy

nope, was never an amiga guy...
you should cover Atari System 1 games like Marble Madness, Paperboy. The patches are very similar.
some great soundtracks there!
or conami bubblesystem loading music on a pipe organ!
I always thought it sounded so baroque.
Hey Woody, what with me being from the UK (as well) I keep thinking it is the blonde woman driving the car. (ladies please close your eyes, because this might be a bit sexist) but I had to laugh when it hit the board and turned over several times. Oh, and nicely done on the music too Woody.
that's funny, i played it as a UK kid and still assumed that the guy was driving.
just what the doctor ordered, "Checkpoint"
This version is actually better than the original
somewhat better hardware than the little sound chip in the arcade cab.
U ARE AWESOME
WHAT ARE YOUR 10 FAVORITE RUclips CHANNELS
Noice!
Are you sure your pseudonym isn't Jan Hammer? I got really strong 'Miami Vice' vibes out of your interpretation.
So is Woody a retro gamer too? New retro gaming spin-off channel, perhaps? ;)
i'm of a certain age where one appreciates 80s synths and arcades! check out my MAME cabinet video if you ain't seen it already :)
Hi Woody! I was born in 79 so I'm from the same era. Thank God for MAME and VSTs so those of us with limited space (and money) can reminisce of those simpler times.
Love the channel. Cheers from the USA!
Sounds amazing, did you mix and polish it much?
yes, there are plenty of fx, reverb and chorus, comp.
Hey Woody, have you lost your voice mate? Your last 4 videos have had no speech on them! Love the videos though. I had outrun on the Atari 1040 ST many years ago.

Hi Woody I was wondering if you can please share the sysex files that were used in this track? I'd really appreciate it!
sorry, i never saved the project files
"Clarence and Alabama go to Cancun"
Nice! Only dx7/dexed factory presets or you tweaked them a lot?
i loaded some other yamaha banks, tweaked envelopes a bit and added some chorus, delay reverb
Perfect :)
do you still play video games and have u played any of the new Outrun games
not much, i have an MAME arcade cab that I built, see separate video, but I just play DK with the kids occasionally. Big fan of OR back in the day, but never got past the 3rd stage :)
cool and is outrun your favorite videogame soundtrack
DID U PLAY THIS GAME GROWING UP
i did
COOL
very awesome song
This is awesome! the original sounds way better tho.
