  • Nepal is a small and beautiful country with a rich diversity of ethnic groups and cultures. Geographically, Nepal is divided into the Himalayas, the hills, and the Terai regions, each home to different ethnic groups. The names of places are often connected to the unique customs and cultures of the people living there. Some place names have profound meanings, while others might sound unusual or humorous and can be misinterpreted. One such village with an unusual name is Gajedi, which might initially be misunderstood as related to marijuana consumption due to the term "Gajedi" colloquially referring to a marijuana user. However, the true origin of the name has a different historical significance.
Gajedi is located in Rupandehi District, within Lumbini Province, specifically in wards 1 and 2 of Kanchan Rural Municipality. It used to be a village development committee (VDC) and was later merged into the current municipality. The village is about 5 kilometers south of the East-West Highway and 24 kilometers north of Lumbini. The population of Gajedi, according to the 2021 census, is 16,049, with a diverse mix of ethnic groups including Brahmins, Chhetris, Magars, Gurungs, Newars, Tharus, and others.
The village celebrates various festivals such as Dashain, Tihar, Janai Purnima, Teej, Chhath, Holi, Buddha Jayanti, Muharram, Christmas, and Eid. It is known for its temples, mosques, cultural traditions like Deusi-Bhailo, Bhajan-Kirtan, Kaura, Tharu dance, and the harmonious coexistence of different languages and communities. The people of Gajedi are known for their friendliness, simplicity, and love for development.
The name "Gajedi" comes from the word "Gaj," which means elephant in Nepali, indicating the village's historical significance as a place where elephants used to reside. This historical context has led to the name Gajedi, which was the name of a school established in 1962. The school recently went viral on social media due to misconceptions about its name being related to marijuana. The school administration issued a statement condemning these misleading associations and clarified the historical context behind the name.
Additionally, the village is famous for Gajedi Lake, also known as Danapur Lake, a wetland area that has become a popular tourist destination. The lake is home to various fish species and endangered birds, making it a spot of natural beauty and ecological importance.
Understanding and respecting the historical and cultural significance of Gajedi village and its school is important, and spreading its true heritage worldwide is encouraged.
