This scene always brings me to tears 😢😭 the moment he realizes he's dreaming and looks into the camera it's like he's looking straight into your soul letting you know that the illusion of the dream has been broken but he refuses to go back to his reality.
@Manuel that's a good question I guess just her mentioning the woman that ruined his life was enough to trigger him..🤔 dreams are strange like that sometimes I guess.
@@elmanuel408 I haven't watched for a while(have to fix that) but it seems to be just as she mentions 'sweet & sour'. I think that phrase comes up elsewhere in the film in reference to what makes our feelings authentic, in that *true* or real happiness can't be experienced without experiencing true/real misery. Something like that.
One of the things I love about this scene, is I feel like it perfectly captures what a dream can be like. They're not always super crazy, and they can be situations like this that seem completely normal. I've had ones like this where I come to a weird realization that I'm in a dream like David does, and then I get looks from people in the dream, the same way Sofia looks at him. It's so eerie, and this movie is amazing.
5 years later, and this is still one of my favorite movies. It represents dreams and the harshness of reality. Hope, love, all the opportunities that it brings, the possibility of a bright future with someone just to have it taken away at a moment's notice so viciously. The regret that one has in those small choices that could change everything. This movie is filled with heartbreak and you feel it strongly because it resonates with you. You see yourself in Aimes and you can't help but empathize with him because there's nothing worst than falling in love and losing that person. "I lost you when I got in that car". That line will always remind me of the frailty of life and love.
My wife died a few years ago, sometimes I dream of her, of holding her, of making love, but somewhere along the way I always remember she is gone and I try to hold on but I can't and I wake up crying. I would give anything for just a few more moments with her.
You wrote this four years ago but I see that nobody responded. I just wanted to let you know that you are heard, that you aren't speaking into the darkness.
1:46 that scene was improvised as Tom forgot his lines after Penelope unexpectedly kissing him then Penelope jumping on him to give him more time to remember. Great chemistry between them
😢 hands down one if the best movies in my opinion, ever. Very emotional performance and scene. I know exactly how he feels now more than I ever wanted to pretend I knew before. Life is still beautiful.
I was a passenger in a car accident back in October, I started getting horrible migraines, headaches, derealization, etc. Two months later my now girlfriend at the time who I had plans of marrying left me and started dating another guy. Ever since then it's been hard to wake up everyday, sometimes I still dream of her what we were, what we could have been, and it just brings me to tears. I can relate so much with that quote "My dreams are a cruel joke. They taunt me", I'm usually my happiest in my dreams, then I back wake up in an empty world. I love that there is a silver lining in the movie, even through his handicap and losing Sofia, David was still able to push forward and lead his company. I think that's an important lesson, I'll always cherish this movie.
World of dreams is the place you want to be ,mate isn't it ..To go anywhere you want to go ,to be with anyone one ,there is no such thing called as time.Thats why this movie is so fucking damn good and the world is empty ,no need to come back!
One of the greatest scenes of the movie. Tom Cruise was magnificent in this. The stare right at the viewer as he realizes the truth, and the tears in his eyes at 3:11 which become visible as Sophia moves her head to the side...incredible. Should have gotten nominated, but that was a tough year with some fierce Best Actor competition.
Tom is a mediocre actor. With limited acting range. He always play cocky know it all character. In real life also Tom is a cocky prick. with his Scientology shit.
Yes there was great competition that year. The broadcast personalities, government officials, crisis actors.. The award for best special effects was also very stiff competition. I mean how does a movie, compare to fooling the entire world into thinking something was real? No chance! It was a good movie, but in this case, nothing could compare with the made for TV stuff.
2:41 He realizes that him holding Sofia is the dream, and it was him getting in the car that was the reality. I love the performance of Tom Cruz in this scene because you can his face change as he's beginning to come to the realization that he's not really there fine and holding Sofia on a fall day. He's somewhere else dreaming of this perfect moment that will never come because he made the horrible choice of getting into that car instead of going straight to work.
This is my favorite scene out of the entire movie. I think a lot of us can relate that every time we dream, we can't tell if it's a dream or real life. We just keep dreaming beautiful stuff to the point you start to realize that this is too good to be true, then you slowly start to get more conscious about what's happening until you get to the point where you fully understand it is just a dream, and at that point you get to choose to either keep on dreaming peaceful but nonexistent stuff, or just spare yourself some pain for later and just wake up to the sad reality of life.
Because when she said "Red dress, stewpot shoes, and the saddest girl to ever hold a martini" it reminded him of his past. And no matter how good a dream is, his subconscious will never let him forget that!
Benjamin P yep the question is not that she said something that she couldn’t hear, but that all of those things really happened to him, she just reminded him about them that it wasn’t a dream , but a reality this is a really incomprehensible scene I think this is a part of a program that he launched in which time but already in it he starts to understand it
Wow I’ve been looking for this 1st song for a while…Earthtime Tapestry by Spacecraft…Elevator Beat is in the OST but not this 1 song, nails the dreamy ambiance
i find this entire scene to be so classic, the most beautiful one i have seen in m entire life, even better than any other scene in titanic.. Tom Cruise is fabulous, incredible, any kind of adjective is just not enuff to describe him here . he is the greatest of all time for a fucking reason, he is and will always remain the biggest icon ever .. Penelope is beautiful and the chemistry these two have onscreen is such a bliss.
+Tanim Islam why is this classic? Penelope is not wearing a burqa. Nor is Tom reciting your prayer through noise blaring loudspeakers. Go and find bliss in those things. Leave the infidels alone!

Everything about this scene is so good. The first shot with the falling leaves and the autumn colours, the emptiness of the street, the music. It starts off surreal and dreamlike. The realisation on Davids face and the the look on Sofia's when he lets go, her turning and running. It's not a nightmare in a traditional sense but one of total emotional unease in my opinion. Really great filming. Although the whole film I feel is a little like that, I dunno if its just the tones and the dialogue but it's almost surreal from the get go (maybe intentional) Anyway, one of my fave scenes in the film (along with outside the club) and Vanilla Sky is up there in my favourite films. Also Penelope Cruz looked gorgeous.
He is FAR from underrated. Empire Magazine called him the actor of his generation because he balances true talent with box office sales. Tom Cruise is VERY rated as an actor and rightfully so!
I can relate to that ... My own dreams are doing this to me since ... since he broke my heart that night ... 3 years ago ... But my stupid dreams won't let it go
Dreams are amazing. I usually do stuff in my dreams I know I won't be able to do in real life.. It's like, I KNOW I'm dreaming and I take RISKS in the dreams that I never have the courage to do in real life
My dreams are a cruel joke. They taunt me. Even in my dreams I'm an idiot... who knows he's about to wake up to reality. If I could only avoid sleep. But I can't. I try to tell myself what to dream. I try to dream that I am flying. Something free. It never works..
I missed it at first but later, when he wakes up on the sidewalk and begins the dream in cryostasis, she wakes him up and he says "This is a joke.". And indeed it was. It was cruel and it taunted him. I love all the little clues and hints throughout this movie.
I never cared for Tom Cruise. I always thought he was just another "Pretty boy, What's Hot Now" actor. Then I saw this movie.... This scene, plus the "Can we Still be Friends" scene changed my opinion of him entirely! I know this movie is an American redo, but that doesn't take away the emotion....Now if I could only avoid sleep a little while longer....
This clip reminds me of that scene in Somewhere in Time where Christopher Reeve wakes up right after he ends up with Jane Seymour. Why do I do it to myself and watch these movies?
sorry guys please clear it out for me: he personally said in the scene that he couldn't wake up so he knew he was dreaming, but after sophia tells him those things about the party I mean does he suddenly starts to remember specifically what happened, meaning him being somehow the reason why it all happened ( "the saddest girl to ever hold a martini") and therefore making him feel guilty? so to male it short : he did know he was dreaming and did not remember sequences and sophia, in a cruel way we could say, makes him remember everything, what actually happened. Please express ur opinion im curious to know what other people think of it and if im right or not
+97damy The way I see it is since he is dreaming, his subconscious is creating everything. So he loves this girl but doesn’t really know how, just that he has these feelings. Then when she starts rattingling off the party and the night, he starts to remember how he met her and the events that followed. Leading to him realizing that the “dream” he had about him being disfigured and in a coma is actually real and that he’s in a dream now
love this movie and this scene, but how did he forget about the party, isn’t that how he met sofia? wouldn’t that whole night be on his mind in the dream?
I don't get why he doesn't remember the party at first..how could he forget the whole party but then all of a sudden remember a very minor detail of the party?
Because he is dreaming, then she mentions tiny details and his mind is more likely to be triggered into remembering the whole thing by reminding him of details connected to the party.
