  • 5300 years ago, in the Tyrolean Alps, the now world famous mountain man, Ötzi, was shot in the back by murderous pursuers on a snowy peak. ...Or so the story goes, perhaps however not all is as it seems in the case of Ötzi the Iceman. Join me at the fireside to hear an alternative take on this timeless tale.

    Dear listener,
I hope this work brought some solid comfort to your day and perhaps a little magic too, that was the design brief I set myself with this production.
Firstly, if you feel the last 40 minutes deserving of it, you can throw a few coins in my hat via this link - it takes two minutes. Those who have donated in the past have given more than I expected (thanks again) but if everyone who enjoyed this donated just one pound it would quickly add up and I would feel a bit less insane putting the hours into another one like it.

As mentioned, I am thinking seriously about building on this format, something tells me it could go places. I am considering adapting classic short stories when not my own writing and have one firm favourite in mind from H.G.Wells for the next instalment.
For those interested in technicalities, the weather and day/night cycle passing by the mountain behind was all animated over a photograph using layered still images and some of my own footage of smoke and cloudy skies made transparent. That was a lot of fun to do, a real study in light - trying to remember the play of colours, the physics of dawn and dusk.
And with that, I shall leave ye. Until next time, stay dangerous,
Jesse in The Land of The Dragons. 🐉

@@unforgivingreach Thank you... good to hear. I have a question just to gauge something regarding the audience's reception: was it specifically the historical setting that you really enjoyed or, well, if I read a more fantastical story by H.G.Wells, for example, adjusting this format to the setting of that story, would you enjoy that similarly? i.e. was it more relaxing while listening to the story and enjoying the scene that drew you or the fact it was about Ötzi?
Should have asked everyone this question really but... will start here.
Thanks in advance - honest answer preferred as I'm wondering whether the historical realism thing here is something I should try to maintain or whether to just focus on the cozy story, journey of the imagination aspect.

@forasfeasa Pembrokeshire, on the South-Westerly tip of Wales - it has only happened once, on a peculiarly clear day. Georges point (I think it is called) on the South East tip of Ireland appeared. Thought I was imagining it at first but my monocular said otherwise. Truly mystical vision sat bathed in an orange glow right below the setting sun - reminded me of High Brasil, gave Ireland an instant mythic status. 🧙‍♂️ [Not that the Emerald Isles were lacking that status before!]

Mate, just a thought but to get more exposure and to ensure that more people get to see your hard work try doing more of the shorts/community posts it doesn’t have to be anything extensive just a thought of the day or a quote and a quick panoramic of the countryside or nature I know you are more concerned with quality output and you nail that every time but I’ve seen some other small channels flourish and grow massively in a very short time and they attribute a lot of that to the shorts once you are sort of established in the algo things definitely take off a bit from what I can see, I know being known and famous isn’t a priority but it’s a real shame that you’re reach is limited because you are niche as it were, I reckon if you did 2-3 shorts a week the subscriptions would pick up and then you get to a 1000 and other features unlock, I’m sure you know and have thought of all these things but I think it’s a crying shame more don’t get to appreciate the stuff you do simply because you are fairly invisible, even if the goal is to just share the ideas and thoughts to a wider audience it’s worth contemplating? and who knows what may come from that, collaborations with others you find interesting or offers worth looking at, I think you’ve said ads and money isn’t a particular goal and I get that but if some extra penny’s trickled into your pocket as a result of wider interest would that be so bad?
Bit of a ramble but popped into my head to say it so I did!😁
Have a great day and just to say I appreciate you and the work and effort you put in brother✨✝️☮️☯️

    • @JesseP.Watson
      @JesseP.Watson  23 дня назад +1

@RobbedSoul Very much appreciate that thought, and yes, it would be good to get more coverage, it can be somewhat frustrating - in a perfect world I would create quality that gains traction and, yes, a few quid from it would be most splendid, not as nonchalant as I may appear there 😉.
The main issue I have, which is shared by a huge amount of smaller channels, is that basically the algorithm is elaborated to a point now where it's completely unpredictable - the data I receive in Studio, which is quite extensive, even that is riddled with seeming contradictions - that horse video I made for example launched like a rocket with green lights all flashing as a great improvement then flat-lined at one of the lowest view-counts - it basically got dropped by the algorithm - same has happened with this.
There is, to my mind two main approaches - one is trying to tick the boxes to satisfy the algorithm and a moderate success can be built in that way... but I took the other approach, which does work for some, of producing stuff that's strong enough to stand on its own back. But its the same issue there, glaring contradictions. For example, we were told that channels need to build a ranking to become recommended - they call it 'becoming an authority' so, if you make 5 videos on a topic, you get tagged as an authority. ...But then you get channels that upload one video and it gets 100k + views straight out of the gates. There's so many things like that that make no sense on the tech side of RUclips now that... well, that's largely why I just try to make good stuff, because you can spend ages researching all the tricks and they just completely fail in reality. - I've done that often but, aye, it just doesn't produce real results.
I did look into the shorts a while and tried them a while back but there is a flip-side there - there's a disconnect between short viewers and video viewers - so you can pick up a load of new subscribers for shorts but they don't actually transfer to the body of the channel so's to speak so they just end up a kind of ghost subscriber base and that can actually damage the channel as they are unresponsive so make it look bad.
With all that said, since you're interested, I tend to think today that I have a... 'hereditary issue' with this channel - I set it up in 2007 and just played on it for... almost 14-15 years. 99% of those old uploads are private now as they were random old s### posts mainly. So, I think there may well be an issue there embedded in the profile of this channel, that's my guess. I have been considering setting up a nee channel to see if things go easier there, was thinking about it for this story... but obviously, it's swings and round-a-bouts as I have ...589 subs here now.
There's basically, well, from the viewer end looking at RUclips, I think there's a slightly false picture appears as the reality of this platform is that something like 95 or maybe it was 99% of channels are running with 100subs or less - little channels with a little group of subs into it - but they never show up in the general feed. So, when looking at it we see the few channels which have broken through, but they're actually the very rare few - but it doesn't look like that obviously. Hence, well, I've heard from lots of RUclipsrs that, like today... it can be a MASSIVE grind getting to 1k subs... but actually its no guarantee anymore if anything opening up - my mate The Mysterious Apocalypse Man got to 1.2k but has been pretty much flat-lined there for two years despite his work improving loads - its likely he's got that 'ghost sub' issue holding him back now. Many similar stories elsewhere... basically the traction curve isn't logarithmic, it can and often does just flat-line suddenly, might be at 1000subs, might be at 10k - another mate Sacred Geometry Decoded who was putting out loads of content seemed to flatline likewise somewhere around 25k I think.
Anyhow... point being... that's why I've just taken the 'quality' approach. It's very strange basically, it comes in waves... God knows what's doing it... some periods my channel will get good traffic and I'll get new arrivals that look through my back catalogue and things tick up steadily with a satisfying constancy, other times, like at the minute, it's an absolute stone wall and 2 days after I've made an upload, that's it, not a single view hardly until the next.
But, yes, to finish up as this has got waaaay long... basically I've gone with that ethic of build a catalogue that's solid and super interesting hopefully, that all ties together in some weird way to create a kinda universe... and just hope that something, at some point, takes off and brings the traffic to start looking through that back catalogue. That can happen - you know those weird times when you get recommended some video from 2014 that's suddenly going viral - that's that kinda thing happening. Aye.
That's basically where I'm at here. Genuinely, it's very fortifying to have your support in that way Rob, to actually consider that stuff is no small thing for some random RUclipsr so that makes me think "Well, I must be doing something right cause this guy's getting frustrated that it ain't taking off, he really gives a s###!" 🙂 So aye, thanks very much.
To close... actually why I haven't already tried reuploading on a new channel is bandwidth on my phone - its fine for this but a job like that going through the back catalogue and redoing it all... that ain't a job to do on an iphone.
Have a grand day... we'll get there! Onwards and sideways brother, onwards and sideways! 🌞

That’s a very comprehensive answer and makes sense really all in all, it’s not in the interest of theTube to promote unless they can make money off the back of it plus let’s face it they just don’t really care about smaller channels unless they are the current thing or PC or on trend🙁.
As an aside you said you are in Pembrokeshire I think? I’ve got family there in Pembroke near the castle and also near Lamphey I see them every now and then, Dewslake and the rowan tree cafe are nice spots with good food and often music of an evening thats worth a look and the Waterman’s arms in Pembroke is a good tavern with interesting folk and music if you pass that way, my uncle and cousin are often in there you’ll know them because of the London accents!😁

@WildFungus No worries. It's just meant light-heartedly really, a story to get the imagination working - no great statements intended in this piece really. Meant to sit on the ear like an old-school detective story, which is an old passion of mine, I read all the Sherlock Holmes in my twenties and I just found myself transposing that style onto this 'case' for a bit of fun - started off as a daft idea about how he could have shot himself in the back then grew into a full production - was originally written as 'Doctor Watson' but I got rid of that as thought it would confuse the algorithm. But, yes, need to be in the right mood for it... by the fire, preferably... with a pipe.
