I'm a big Ghost fan, which is probably why this video popped up in my feed haha This was one of those songs where when I first heard it, I was like, "Ok, that's good" but it didn't quite wow me at the time. But then I kept coming back to it, and it just started to grow on me. Its certainly catchy. I still don't know if it necessarily wows me, but I think its a great song for them to have in their catalogue regardless. I mean its straightforward, no real twists, a bit predictable, however it all still sounds solid and there's nothing wrong with that. I was actually surprised this was the one off this album that got nominated for a Grammy. Kaiserion for me is the mvp track on that album. Oh, but yes, Ghost definitely comes with some cheese, but they deliver it so well. They blend pop and metal a bit, and that can push some metalheads away. For me, I think it makes a great sound and if anything, kind of harkens back to metals roots in a way a lot of bands today don't engage with anymore. And finally, on their satanism: Yeah, none of them literally believe in the devil. However it's not just a gimmick. Its theater with purpose. (I think even the main writer (Tobias Forge) actually holds some sort of belief for God, but I could be wrong on that.) With each new album, they've had more and more to say about organized religion and how is frequently gets abused by powerful people only to maintain their own selfish power. If you look up the lyrics to Kaiserion, you'll see a lot more pointed shots about how Christianity has been brutal. Anyway, great job guys, hope you'll explore a bit more.
Ghost is incredible, and it is all completely theatrical. It’s a concept created by leader Tobias Forge, who plays the character of the lead singer Papa Emeritus IV. The band and music is satanic, but the actual members are not. It’s just a fun theatrical gimmick. Watch some of their live stuff and you’ll see that this band is almost silly, not taking themselves too seriously, but in the best way. A lot of the music has satanic themes, and if you wanna hear some classics give a listen to He Is, Ritual, or Year Zero (a highlight of their live shows). Ritual has a very throwback sound, and sounds like it could have been recorded in 1976.
This is basically about Aleister Crowley. Which he also liked to be called Little Sunshine. Now if i you look at the album cover, it’s a mirror image of Aleister Crowley.
If you guys are interested in these stuff, there's a fairly big "lore" in Ghost: Basically, there's this ancient satanic cult called "The Ministry", which wanted to spread the word of Satan in the most effective way possible. In the late 60's/early 70's, since Rock music was on a global hype, they decided to spread the word that way, creating a Rock band called Ghost. The lead singer would always have the title of "Papa" (which means pope). The first one was called Papa Nihil (the one we see earning the face paint and the white eye in 'Dance Macabre' music video). Following the downfall of Rock and the lack of the fast spreading technology at the time, Ghost went into the shadows and was never seen again... until 2010, when the band suddenly reappears, since modern technology has reached the point they needed with the Internet available worldwide. Now with a new lead singer: Papa Emeritus I (eldest son of Papa Nihil), they released the first album (Opus Eponymous). After that, each album would a new front man. That being said, we had Papa Emeritus II (younger brother of the previous one) on 'Infestissuman' (2013), Papa Emeritus III (youngest of the brothers) on 'Meliora' (2015) and then, all of the sudden, all 3 were mysteriously murdered, leaving the front man role open, but no more Papa Nihil sons to fill in. Because of that, they were forced to, for the first time, use someone out of the bloodline, and, as so, he couldn't be called "papa". Sister Imperator, a high rank woman in The Ministry (the woman we see initiating Nihil in 'Dance Macabre' music video), pointed Cardinal Copia for the 4th album ('Prequelle', 2018). Nihil strongly opposed the choice but ultimately had to accept it, as long as he stayed cardinal and was never elevated to the rank o papa. Papa Nihil, despite his advanced age, used to make an appearance at the concerts playing a saxophone solo in the song 'Miasma'. In one of the concerts, he dies onstage. Now, with the old leader dead, Sister Imperator promoted Cardinal Copia to papa, officially named Papa Emeritus IV and he was the front man for the 5th and current album, "Impera', from 2022. The music video for the song 'Kiss The Go Goat' (supposedly a song from the old days when the band was formed in the 60's when Nihil was still the lead singer) reveals us some details from the past. Back then, Nihil and Imperator were lovers, but as he was becoming a rockstar, he was getting too much attention from his female fans and for that reason they eventually broke up. Sister Imperator was pregnant at that time, but never told him. Now, in current days, she was actually the one who ordered all Nihil's sons to be killed, so she could point someone new to the role and that someone was gonna be Cardinal Copia, her and Nihil's bastard son. That way, she got her revenge and at the same time could put his bastard son in his place of right, as papa and leader of the band. Obviously, all of this is just fiction and was being slowly revealed through the years by all sorts of media (specially short lore videos they release on the band's RUclips channel). The lead singer behind the mask (it's always a realistic mask, never his real face), songwriter and creator of it all is Tobias Forge. All of the albums are always conceptual too. The first 3 were 3 parts of a same story. 'Opus Eponymous' was about the annunciation of the Antichrist coming to Earth. Ends with the song 'Genesis', meaning his birth. The next record, 'Infestissuman', starts telling us the Antihrist announced before is actually the son of Lucifer himself and the album describes his first contact with mankind. Next one, 'Meliora', jumps in time and is about the relationship between the Antichrist and the mankind growing stronger and stronger to the point we reach the absolute absence of God, masked by the last song of the album, 'Deus in Absentia". The next 2 had a new concepts of their own. 'Prequelle' compared faith and blind belief to a plague, dangerous and fast spreading (having the Black Plague as the conceptual background for the comparison). And, finally, 'Impera' is about the mankind's fetish for power and how frail it is. It takes empires as an example, since every single one of them throughout history has risen and fallen. It's always a cycle that never failed before and never will. So, also modern empires, no matter how unbreakable they seem to be, will eventually fall and it's just a matter of time. Well... that's only the tip of the iceberg. I can tell by your reactions that you will dive in naturally. You've been ghosted :P
The title is a quote from Alistair Crowley. And the album cover is also inspired from him. But "Impera" is really about the rise and fall of empires. I would really recommend you to listen to Spillways from the same album. I think you would like that one. Oh, by the way. Metallica is huge Ghost fans. Huge. James has supported them all the way from the start.
This popped up at the top for 2022 probably because they're up for a Grammy for this song. That said, it isn't even necessarily the strongest song on this album. Kaisarion is one of my personal favorites from Impera.
This album as a whole is derivative of the 80's arena rock sound. The theme is about the rise and fall of empires. I saw them on this tour in San Antonio, TX and it's a rock show unlike any other. Very theatrical and just a ton of fun. Like y'all mentioned, their whole thing is just simply a shtick, and they are not Satanic. Which is ironic because while completely satirical, their lyrics do exemplify elements of what the devil actually does, especially in their earlier releases. But as I mentioned, it's simply an act. The frontman, Papa Emeritus, dresses like a satanic Pope who changes his appearance every album as do the band members known as the "Nameless Ghouls". I would definitely check out some of their works. From this album IMPERA, definitely check out others such as "Griftwood", "Kaisarion", and "Watcher in The Sky". I think "Cirice", "Dues in Absentia" and "Witch Image" are good ones to check out as well!
About the satanic thing... Ghost IS a satanic band. Since the very beginning. We can't say for the future, but to so far yes, they ARE satanic. There's simply no way to deny that. That being said, they make music and music is a form of art. The true purpose of each element the artists put in their work is known only by the artists themselves. I can vary from an authentic attempt of indoctrination to a simple tongue and cheek gimmick to shock and/or entertain. In Ghost's case, Tobias has already spoken about the matter a number of times. Religiously he's an atheist, so no, they're not worshiping an evil character from the christian mythology. He said that all the "demonic" stuff in the band, from the lyrics to the costumes, are simply symbols. A call back to the tradition of Rock music having this kind of stuff "attached" to it since the very beginning, including the bands he grew up listening to. Cool looks, cool symbols, cool elements, cool words to put in the lyrics of a Rock song. Just that. But he also says that, socially speaking, if Ghost represents any kind of "protest" against the "church" and "religion" as institutions, it's a bonus, cause he's always been aware and against the dark negative effects that strict close minded religious indoctrinations can have on people and on the society in general. Ultimately, it's the same case as almost all the bands labeled as "satanic": it's there, you take it as you see fit. In the end, what really matters is their music is fucking damn good :D
He's not saying you little sunshine call me he said call me little sunshine he's little sunshine like Lucifer you know what I'm saying like you know Venus right before the sun comes up.
Ghost is incredible, they are the whole package....Great music, lyrics, concept and show.
oh man, I laughed so hard when she said " a character from cats? " God bless you ma'am!
Lucifer is known as the Bright Morning Star, hence little sunshine.
