    What's funny is the cult of hating on Ghost will argue his vocals are pre-recorded even though he's lost his voice during a show, had his voice crack in places where it was unmistakable, & recently had his mic shut off & no vocals came out except from the backup singers until they turned his mic back on. If you want a terrific Ghost live thing to react to, search "Ghost - If You Have Ghosts (Live Acoustic) | HardDrive Online" and I guarantee you will have a life-changing experience.

      @Missunderstood214 Год назад +20

      Yeah, his voice cracked pretty badly when he tried to hit the high note in the live acoustic performance of He Is, but the rest of the performance was so flawless that, if not for the one off note, I almost would've thought he was lip-synching just because it's hard to believe that someone's voice can be that perfect. Anyway, I think most just think that because they don't realize that he's wearing a mask.

  • @Lazarus_Cardinalis
    @Lazarus_Cardinalis Год назад +136

    The mask puts pressure on his nose so that may be a reason for his nasal tone, but it does seem like he's also pushing it here, maybe to cut through the mix, but Tobias Forge, the man behind the mask, is pretty versatile. While his nasality is most times present in one way or another, he has a very wide tonal and dynamic range

    • @Missunderstood214
      @Missunderstood214 Год назад +12

      I wondered about that because I noticed that he has a very visible indentation down the center of his nose. I hope it doesn't give him health issues (sleep apnea, etc), or anything, but at least it gives him one of the most unique sounding voices out there today.

    • @neuralmute
      @neuralmute Год назад +17

      @RitualofGhosts I've read that in a couple of different interviews and articles too - that Tobias' nose had been broken in a fight back in his Repugnant days, it was never set quite right, and it healed wrong.
      I also read that he refuses to get it repaired, because it could affect his voice. And it's not like we go to the shows for his pretty face!

    • @Missunderstood214
      @Missunderstood214 Год назад +6

      @RitualofGhosts Oh, wow, I didn't know that. I just knew that commenters on the video of this performance were joking about his nasally voice and on an interview video I watched, someone had to point out his "funny nose" . Now it's even sadder that people were making fun of the poor guy😢

    • @Missunderstood214
      @Missunderstood214 Год назад +7

      @@neuralmute He does have a pretty face, though, and I personally think his nose and crooked teeth only make him even more adorable😍🥰

    • @neuralmute
      @neuralmute Год назад +6

      @@Missunderstood214 Oh, he's definitely a pretty guy. I was just joking about how nobody's ever seen his face at a show anyway, what with the masks! No offense or meanness intended - we love Tobi in this house, and will protect him will all our bubble wrap and throwing knives.

    Love to see what you think of Mary on a Cross. Tobias rarely goes for it hard vocally, but the end of that song you really see what he can do.

    The reason his low notes sound so good is because he’s a natural baritone, he self trained himself to do the nasal sound.
    If you want to hear him live at peak performance check out the Harddrive Online live Acoustic versions of “Jigolo Har Megiddo” and “If you Have Ghosts”. Its incredible! Would love to see your reaction to it!

    god i love ghost sm, this song as well as Year Zero, Rats, Mary on a Cross, Kiss the go-goat, and more. Tobias's voice as well as the background music just hits in a really good way that gives so much serotonin. But overall i love how u reacted and explained things in detail, I'm genuinely happy to see ghost getting the recognition they deserve

    I had a _massive_ cold earlier this year, that damn-near developed into bronchitis. When I finally found a med that gave my sinuses some relief, and an inhaler that allowed me to f'n breathe, I was _astounded_ that I could sing along with *Ghost* songs with perfect ease! Once i cleared up, however -- not so much. It literally required something that pushed my voice to resonate from some other area entirely, and I now have a respectful understanding of how that crooked septum creates a unique voice that cannot be replicated. 😊🖤🤘🤘 Wouldn't wish on him what happened, but what fucking brilliant revenge Lucifer took on his attackers! 😈🖤

    Great review of the vocal techniques! I really like the sound that Ghost puts out there for people to listen to. I’m guessing now after this you should review Mary On A Cross (that EP alone he puts a different sound to his voice) as it’s been a huge trend on social media lately. Cheers!

    That's what reaction videos should be all about! Intelligent analysis that you can learn something from. I'm happy to be your new subscriber! :)
    The first time I heard this particular performance I couldn't quite decide If I liked it or not, I even checked other live versions to be sure that this twangy voice was done on purpose. And yeah, it definitely was and after a few listens I realized that I absolutely love it, it adds more sharpness to the song, makes it interesting and as you said immediately commands attention. It would be amazing if he used the same technique on studio versions...
    Edit: Now that I think about it I'm quite sure that Forge had broken his nose, it didn't heal properly so it might be why his voice tends to be more nasal.

    Definitely check out Mary on a Cross, I think you'd really enjoy it. One of my favourite things about Ghost is how camp they are, watching them always makes me smile and laugh. Although Tobias wears a mask he does such a great job of expressing himself through body language.

    the reason he stands like that is bc Papa IV's papal garb is actually pretty heavy, thats why he doesnt perform in it a lot like the other Papas did! u can also really hear the difference between pre-recorded and live vocals, since the pre-recorded vocals he isnt wearing the mask

  • @rsmith6366
    @rsmith6366 Год назад

    If you want to see Tobias singing without a mask you need to look up Repugnant (growled vocals) or Subvision (regular singing). This is all pre 2010. He also went by the stage name Mary Goore then.

    That very video was the first I had heard or seen of Ghost. It awoke something in me I thought long desiccated; a serious interest to explore new music again, specifically more Ghost. Not long after going down the rabbit hole, I learned what I could about the band, watched videos, and listened to every album, then even put together a Favorites playlist I play constantly. Their music brings me joy again, like I remember music used to as a kid. I hear many people are experiencing that same joy.
    It's a gift... provided you're smart enough to get past the tongue-in-cheek Satanism theme and just enjoy the wonderfully produced music.

    I'm glad I saw this and learned something new. Now I know what oral & nasal twang is. Whenever I sing along to Ghost's stuff, I find myself instinctively doing both twangs even though I don't usually sing with that. I didn't know the right terminology for it.

    I am weird like you and we should be friends ❤️ I agreed! Thank you for reviewing Ghost! As someone who normally tunes in for the K Pop reviews it was neat to see this genre of music explored! If you’re looking to continue in the rock realm I would love to see you comment on The Drug In Me Is Reimagined/ The Drug in Me is You by Falling in Reverse. This song got lots of attention because Ronnie Radke the lead singer does RUclips view and recognize some people so it generated a bit of a fervor that should be died down by now but my main reason for bringing it up is to hear you make a Ronnie impression! I loved the V of BTS stylized singing you did and same with this for Ghost. Ronnie done the Sam way would be awesome!! (Just a suggestion) love your work 🔥

    I think you’re right about the anchor, but the stoicism in performance is also partly because he’s playing a character who is meant to portray a Pope-like authority. To project power, you have to be rooted and exude charisma while moving very deliberately.
