- Deputies responding to a disturbance call at a Florida apartment complex burst into the wrong unit and fatally shot a Black U.S. Air Force airman who was home alone when they saw he was armed with a gun, an attorney for the man’s family said Wednesday. Senior Airman Roger Fortson, 23, who was based at the Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Field, was in his off-base apartment in Fort Walton Beach when the shooting happened on May 3.

After watching the video I see this as MURDER. The Airman followed the deputy’s order to step back, he did not raise his weapon. The deputy shot first and then said “drop the weapon”.
Also, they were NOT at the correct door. The woman who called the police told the deputy she was not sure where the arguing was coming from. Then she gives an address. The deputy should have questioned her further to make sure he was even at the right door. She said she wasn’t sure what side the yelling came from. So how could she give an apartment number??? Obviously they were at the wrong door because the airman was alone and not in a yelling match with a woman who was screaming.
Also, anyone can stand at your door and yell “Sheriff’s office!” Criminals can pretend to be law enforcement. The young man was within his rights to have a gun in his hand for protection. He did not point the gun at the deputy.
This was MURDER and should be prosecuted as such. That Deputy needs to be fired and prosecuted immediately.

Yes, they do. I worked as a police dispatcher. Police arrived on the scene to a domestic dispute and the woman who was being attacked actually turned on the officers trying to help her. If I remember correctly, she hit him upside the head with a lamp.

Deputy did not cover the peephole nor did he "barge in". That said there was no justification for this. It comes down to this: He saw an American citizen with a firearm inside his own home and deleted him. Deleted him for carrying a gun in his own home.
Unacceptable.
The body cam footage shows the officer deliberately step away from the peephole, for officer safety this is taught and was likely part if his training.
However, the expectation of a citizen, especially one who was not engaged in criminal activity, to trust an unrecognizable voice CLAIMING to be police is unreasonable to say the least.
Note: there was no one else in the apartment. The Airman never committed a crime, never raised the pistol, fire arm was legal, this was his home.

First he did not identify himself at the first knock and stepped away from the peephole. Witness on the phone said he checked the peephole and no one was there then went to the back of his apartment to get his registered gun incase of a break in.

Exactly!! This actually happened to a young black couple here in Houston, TX. They heard someone bamming on the door claiming to be Law Enforcement after the young man got home from work. He hurried to open the door and the thugs murdered the young man and his wife and took electronics and items from their apartment. I think their baby was unharmed but the couple is long gone. I don't think they ever found the guys who did it.
Brandishing a firearm is nefarious and makes you the aggressor (unless someone else is already the aggressor) . You cannot answer your door with a gun in hand. If you're worried that someone is imitating police, don't open the freaking door.

He also stands to the side off the door outside the view of the peephole. The tactics he used cost that man his life. This sheriff's departments training is terrible.

The officer knocked several times and identified himself as a county sheriff while also hiding his identity by standing to either side of the door, the man opened the door himself with a pistol in his hand upon seeing the gun the officer immediately shot him multiple times and then said to drop the weapon... Why is it okay for an officer to come to your front door armed, but you can't do the same???🤔

Okaloosa county court is backed up with cases since the squirrel incident and the more cops mess up the more they are backed up.
They say that the peep hole was blocked .. if it was not blocked he could have seen its cops outside and opened the door without any issues. Cops are supposed to anyway surround the house so the suspect cannot escape so there is no question of the person seeing its a cop and running away. This is a clear case of murder and the cops who shot him should be held accountable for what they did.

Chappelle was talking about this decades ago. This almost happened to me. Fortunately, I don't have a gun nor, do I have a peep hole to cover. I spoke to the cop through my slightly opened window. It was night and I could barely see him. He kept asking me to open my door and, if some guy was living in my house, even though I told him that I had NO IDEA who he was talking about. Our house had been rented to "room renters", before we bought. Apparently, there was a warrant out for one of the erstwhile renters. But, my family had lived there for almost 8 FLIPPIN' YEARS! It was scary because my kids were really young, at the time.

According to the bodycam video the police officer was standing to the side of the door when he opened it. Then the police officer sidestepped and without telling him to drop the weapon or anything he shot 6 tomes. Video dont lie. And also if you watch the whole video you hear the karen that weaponized the police and sent them to the apartment. She also needs to be held accountable period. No justice no peace .....
