Guess what? Stan directed the video. He said it was just him and two or three other people with a camera going to familiar places in New Zealand which is his home. Can you believe it? No big budget. Just him and his friends. And he had only two weeks to write it, record it, do the video and get it to the director, Ava DuVernay! Blessings on blessings. ❤
😂 I saw him talking about how self conscious he was waiting for people to pass so he could climb up the rocks in his little costume in the cold at the waterfall. Kept asking his friend "Did you get the shot. Did you get the shot. Hurry".😂😂 He chose his clothes, dressed himself. No make up.
All the scenes other than those shots of the lady were shot here in The Bay Of Plenty here in New Zealand were Stan comes from and I too live here in the Bay.
I never get tired of these reactions! I watch this waiata a few times a day. Its on repeat in my head. Its so powerfully US❤❤❤ Lol this video wouldve cost about $3000 to make😂 if you count the cost of fuel, food, accomodation & ppls time😂😂❤❤❤ maybe the cost of phone fees too😂😂😂
Filmed in Stan’s hometown area in NZ - Tauranga, Rotorua and I believe his wife’s hometown area - looks like Mt Ruapehu area - desert road - everyday scenery here in NZ - Maori language - Stan being his true self in my mind - representing his people from the soul🙏
You are right, his backgrounds are of natural power. This is where he drew his power from. His 1st words are I am of colour and he wrote that to touch all coloured brothers and sisters, that why you felt goosebumps. We share a commonality.
Translation: He toi ora ahau nou - I am your vitality Te toi no Kurawaka - The source from Kurawaka ( the waters where life began ) Taku rongomaiwhiti e - My unique sacredness Takiri ko te haeata - The dawn breaks Anga atu ki te Ra - Face the light of the new day Whiti whiti ki te ora e - Shine, cross over to life Hou mai ra - Resounding To rongo e - Are your deeds Tau mai ra - Received To karere - Is your message Mau tonu e - It remains Tuturu whakamaua kia tina - Bind together, fix and affirm Haumi e - It is affirmed Hui e - Bound together Taiki e - In unity
Loved your reaction, so spot on, you touched on so many things of our culture that is depicted in Stan's performance in this video, our waters, our mountains, our forests, our lands, the sun, moon, stars and the universe all things that have been gifted for humanity, our spirituality. When we are introducing ourselves we pay homage to our mountains our waters our land our meeting houses from where we originated and our ancestors. Gosh really found it difficult writing this in English, never the less hope you got the gist
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this in English for me to understand... I really appreciate that! And your comments in general were just lovely to read - thanks for sharing! 😀❤️
Stan has interviews out on RUclips promoting the film Origin, directed by Ava DuVernay. Stan explains the process of creating the song, and video production, of "I am". There is also a lyric video on RUclips, released by Stan, that translates the chorus from Te Reo Māori to English. Ngā mihi.
The Movie was independently financed through private funding so wasn't a large budget that most production companies have, also Stan "The Man" Walker makes us Maori ( Native indigenous) I am also related to him through his great grandparents (Ngati Porou). The comments from @reneeasul3347 were correct Stan and just a few close friends made the video through many parts of Aotearoa from Rotorua, East Coast where his tupuna (ancestry) comes from, and also Waitomo Caves. Stan makes all Kiwis so proud of him, BTW this Waiata (Song) relates to who we are, where we come from our links to our past, and where we are today as Tangata Whenua ( People) As does the Movie a must-see when it is released next year in I believe in February - march 2024
The movie is based on the book Caste, which compares the societies of India (caste system), America (during slavery period) and Germany (during Hitler period). Very enlightening book. As for Stan, I have followed him since he appeared on Australian Idol (won it) in 2009. His first releases were very pop oriented but his career has transformed as he has taken on themes related to his culture. I think it’s a beautiful use of his amazing talent and this track is a high water mark. I can picture him performing this with full orchestra at the Academy Awards show. I’d be shocked if it doesn’t get nominated for best song.
remember those American brothers during idol said they would pay money to listen to him and Michael Bublé said his voice was kissed by God or some such,.
Take a look at the documentary on his channel, about his health struggles. What a man to get through that, then produce such a brilliant song/video. Hats off to him! ❤❤❤
If Stan had time, it would've been cool to have our other Polynesian cuzzies, Aborigines, American Indians, African Americans, Irish, Indians etc standing in the forest. This message is relevant to many peoples who were colonised or displaced.
maybe this will be a trend setter for other indigenous cultures as they are also have so much deep history around colonisation and are spiritually one with the elements and animals
Te ahi kai pō (the fire burning away the darkness). Stan envoked his whakapapa (ancestors) along with his wairua (spirit) with this waiata (song). Well that's my interpretation. We have so much talent here in little Aotearoa (New Zealand) and Stan is up there with the best of them. Kia Kaha Whanau.
Thanks for the reaction. Stan is a treasure!❤ Please react to "I am the colour" the live version. Also "Don't dream it's over". Thanks again. We love Stan xx
Great reaction, Actually Watch him singing live at some interview he did a day or two ago " it goes off" he adds some incredible adlibs Search Stan walker singing I am live❤
Kia ora e hoa (hello friend)- the connection to nature you felt in this video is a direct link to our culture (Māori / indigenous people of Aotearoa/New Zealand). We have a deep connection to our whenua (land), this power you felt is the mauri (energy/life force) of this place ❤️🖤🤍
I found the Correct translation from Maori to English. From the Chorus: He Toiora ahau nou - I am of your vitality Te Toi no Kurawaka - The source from Kurawaka Taku rongomaiwhiti e - My unique sacredness Takiri ko te Haeata - The Dawn breaks Anga atu ki te ra - Face the light of the new day Whiti, whiti ki te ora e - Shine, cross over to life This repeats and then goes to the end Hou Mai ra - Resounding To Rongo e - Are your deeds Tau mai ra - Received To Karere - Is your message Mau Tonu e - It remains Mau tonu e - It remains The End Chant is frequently used at the end of traditional maori language speeches Tuturu Whakamaua kia tina - Bind together, fix and affirm! Tina - Fix! Haumi e - It is affirmed! Hui e - Bound together Taiki e - In Unity!
Could you react to the Norwegian singer Sissel Kyrkjebø? Her voice will blow you away. She performed the vocals in the movie Titanic and is considered one of the world's top crossover sopranos. Try react to Sissel performing "O Helga Natt" ("O Holy Night" in Swedish).

He’s just posted up a live vocal performance of this song. Look it up. He did it to an audience in LA. A vocal master class.

First seeing him on Idol and singing It's a Man's World was a revelation!

I do feel there is a shift happening, but the ones who hold power are just too damn greedy and are bought out by the polluters and pillagers.
I had this thought too!!!!!! It would be amazing for stan to compile visuals from indigenous whanau across the globe!!! Amaze.
Doesn't the movie do that? Maybe, the Director? Producer? Might think he's tryna do her job.🤔🤷
Stan can certainly sing. More please, many great songs. Don’t worry baby, Pillowtalk, Tua. Etc Thanks Sandy

Ae, it's vibrational life force, or, as you said, frequencies. It pulsates thru all living things.😍
I would love you to react to Stan Walker and the Levites ‘New Light’ live. I think you’ll love it.

I found the Correct translation from Maori to English.

Hui e - Bound together
Taiki e - In Unity!
