Loved your reaction ❤ Music is a language we all understand and connect to. You are correct, Stan is a New Zealand Māori. His Tamoko (Tattoos) are real and all of these places in the video are where his tribal connections are, except one place his wife comes from. “I AM” is his response to Ava DuVernay’s film 'Origin'. It is about the reclamation, reconciliation and reconnection to our identity, our language and the origins of who we are and where we come from. By knowing who we are, we are then able to know where we are going. This is how we unlock our greatest power. I AM is taking back the power and giving it back to the people.
And Origin is the story of the author of the book Caste which tracks caste systems globally to present day and shows it's repercussions as systemic racism in society. Yes, layers upon layers in the origin of this song. As a pacific islander, his representation has been huge to us as a community. I recently saw Stan in Hawaii in concert and it was epic and joyful and amazing. ....(I'm also part Swedish, so sending Viking love as well!)
You're so correct with your interpretation of the (waiata) song and correct with the Stan's native language, Maori. Great 😃👍 reaction thank you for your intuitive sense and feel for the Maori culture. At times I feel our waiata when sung the way Stan sings is very similar sounding to the Indian American song.
He is a great warrior. He lost his stomach thru the cancer and had to learn to sing again with a different diaphragm dynamic. He made a documentary about it. Thank you for your reaction. ❤
First time viewer of your channel, and you are the only person I have seen reacting to Stan who even mentioned the Holocaust memorial. That, as well as your honest & open reception of the video, as well as having the lyrics? I will happily subscribe to your channel!
Remember when Beyonce said it was one of the best voices she'd heard in a long time. I interviewed Stan a few times when I worked at FLAVA in NZ. He was such a humble and genuine person. I'm so glad he's doing well. He represents us well.
Well, Viking... I am so glad I waited until I got home from work to watch this amazing, beautiful, emotional masterpiece. I loved everything about this track, video, and your reaction. Yes you are correct, he has incorperated our native language and culture of New Zealand into his song.!!!! Love your interpredation, much Aroha {love} to you!!!!
We, New Zealanders respect and love Stan’s music. He co wrote this and most of the scenery is New Zealand, Stan and a friend also produced video. Yes he is singing in his native language, Maori which is native to the land of new zealand. Stan has been through alot in life, one thing he is singing without a stomach due to cancer.
Beautiful reaction, vikings and Polynesian were similar seafaring peoples. Māori are deeply and intrinsically connected to the land, it is the source of our vitality!
I absolutely loved your reaction!!... you are such an 'on to it' person ...Stan is also an amazing human who was born to create change through his artistry.... He touches our soul .... 💖💖💖
7:04 mad respect to you for taking time to dive into the message because it's deriving from a culture so close to my own which is the moari culture, new Zealand. It's so much more than vocals and style because the culture is embedded with a fierce familial love that goes beyond the grave. There's more to life and it doesn't here and they're always with with you in your walk of life fiercely protecting you. And I love that you're picking up on other parts of the message on how it's connecting with the holocaust and how that message of love ties in to a very real event to remind us we're more than this❤❤
I love your reaction Viking, priceless!! Yes, Stan was born here in New Zealand went to Australia as a child and returned to NZ years ago now. This is my country, my back door Viking!
Bro I LOVE your reaction. One of the best I've seen of Stan "I am". Love the background video and subtitles and your commentary... Thank you! As one of Stans fans since watching him win Australian Idol 2009... I totally appreciate this. I saw Origin when it came to NZ and loved it. Very low budget but a massive message. We love Stan ❤ always! Happy Matariki ! It's today in NZ ❤
Such a beautiful song, and Stan's voice gave me chills. I loved this song and your reaction. I felt his words as I am an Indigious Native American and things need to change. I will subscribe to your channel now. Thank You. 🎤🎶🎧🫶👏
YES 👍🏽 You caught the Holocaust Memorial… I agree ☝🏽 humanity has been 😢 lately in a sad state. I just watched the news about the INDIA loss of over 100 people dying because of stampede from a religious event. The comments by toxic people really saddens me. We must remember we are all humans and this affects many families regardless of what Country and Race we just happen to be born into. Thank you for sharing your commentary and analysis. 🧐 I really love this Artist who shared his culture with others. It’s Beautiful 🎼✨🎶♥️.
I've been addicted ever since first hearing him here, & can't get enough. There are even fun contests of Stan doubles singing his songs. While I love his recent songs like this one & his Maori Ki Te Ao, I'm very addicted to his oldie song called Take It Easy (live your life). I can't thank Viking enough for introducing him to us. What a blessing he is!
As a proud Māori and wearer of Mjolnir, I love this reaction!! I listened to the Grimfrost podcast with Einar Selvik and he spoke about time he spent in New Zealand and how his time amongst the Māori people influenced him on his journey towards the birth of Wardruna. So proud!!
Stan has also done a cover of Ultralight Beam, and his own song New Takeover, and his cover of Tennessee Whiskey with Parson James, his cover of Purple Rain, Amazing Grace are all phenomenal. Big loves to you from New Zealand Aotearoa.💜
Stan Walker won Australia's got talent show. Shortly after his win, he was diagnosed with stomach cancer. The same gene that has taken a lot of his family. He had his stomach removed and began a new journey. He had to learn to sing differently, which he has successfully. He is Maori, speaks the language fluently. He has learned so much about his culture and the dynamics behind it. He wanted to sing using the Maori language, so when others tried to persuade him differently, he himself became an independent artist so he could perform everything the way he wanted. It was either going to make or break him, so as it turned out, the decision was spot on. Ava Duvernay looked him up, but had to go through someone who knew exactly how to find him. Ava was so inspired by his vocals, she absolutely had to have Stan see the movie "Origins" and then have him write the theme song. The theme song is " i Am."
He didn’t win Australia’s Got Talent … it was Australian Idol …. I know because I worked on it. He was amazing … incredibly humble and an amazing talent. Google his performances on the show … he was incredibly special. I’m so happy to see this video and your reaction because I can see he has found his true self
First time seeing you and I'm impressed! You're absolutely right - he's Maori (even if he was born outside of his ancestral homeland of Aotearoa New Zealand). You're the first reactor I've seen to get it right. Must mean the others aren't the brightest 😜 Love you so I'm subscribing!
@@VikingReacts Sure, take the compliment, but to me it is simply the Truth. For a non-musician, your reaction puts all the others I have seen to shame ! Exceptional !!
Stan wrote the song after being shown the film. He is singing in Maori. There are translations. He filmed it with his friend in 2 weeks. The scenery is New Zealand all from his tribal area.
Awesome reaction.. When the haka is performed properly, it will stir the warrior heart in every culture.. I could see the gleam in your eyes by the end.. We are all connected as humans through nature.. but spiritual only special people will feel their blood boil as our animal instincts tell us it's time for war. 'I am' touches differently to a haka as it is more for our humanity side. Just gave you a sub.. 👍
