    Packer quarterback Tobin Rote is the answer to the trivia question "Who is the only player to quarterback teams to a league championship in both the NFL and AFL?" Rote did so for the Detroit Lion in the NFL championship game of 1957 and the San Diego Chargers in the AFL Championship game of 1963.

    The Green Bay Packers were the laughingstock of the NFL in the 1950's...and the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions were the league's best teams. My how times have changed

    The Green Bay Packers of 1950-58 had only two .500 seasons, but they had some talented players: Babe Parilli,Tobin Rote (the cousin of New York Giants star halfback, Kyle),Dick Afflis,Gary Knafelc,Jerry Helluin,Howie Ferguson,Billy Howton and
    Bob Mann (the first black player in team history). The coaches of that era were Gene Ronzani, Lisle Blackbourn, and Ray "Scooter" McLean.

      John Vainisi was doing an excellent job for them, scouting in an era where there wasn't as much scouting. It took Lombardi to know what to do with the talent they had and also how he wanted to mold the team. Belichick is great but Lombardi is GOAT.

    Tobin Rote was a great qb on a really bad team. He won a championship game with Detroit and another with the Chargers of the AFL. Billy Howton was the best receiver of the 1950s and when he retired he had more receptions and yards than anyone else. Neither are in the HOF but ought be.

    • @gregfrank4115
      @gregfrank4115 10 месяцев назад +2

      The Packers had talent on these 50s clubs, but no sense of direction. Players would go the board of directors, who grilled the coaches each week after every game, win or lose. To name a few players on those teams, you had Tobin Rote, Babe Parilli, Howie Ferguson, Tom Bettis, Jim Ringo, Bobby Dillon, Bob Skoronski, Billy Howton, Max McGee, among others, and lots of younger players like Jim Taylor, Ray Nitschke, Jerry Kramer, Dan Currie, and on and on. Once Vince Lombardi came to town in 1959, he weeded out the players who he didn't feel would help him, then he molded those left into winners. Plus, no more meddling from the executive committee. They were told to make an appointment, and if they wanted to meddle, find another coach. They got the message.

      Actually, it was in the late 1940s, the last seasons Curly Lambeau was as head coach that led to the Packers downfall towards the next decade. After the Packers won their last World Championship in 1944, Lambeau and the executive committee were at odds with each other. In 1947, he bought The Rockwood Lodge and made it the team's training site and the
      front office scoffed at the idea. The Packers had a losing record in
      1948, and the nadir came in 1949, when the Packers went 2-10 and were nearly broke. Lambeau resigned prior to the 1950 season after getting in
      a ton of vitriol with the executive committee. And to make matters worse,
      the Rockwood Lodge burned to the ground due to faulty wiring. The Packers would not return to prominence until Vince Lombardi was hired as head coach in 1959.

      @@robertsprouse9282 Unfortunately, Curley Lambeau couldn't regain his magic head coach in Chicago with the Cardinals. He and ownership
      could not work well in his two seasons (1950-51). After guiding the
      Washington Redskins to a winning record in 1953, Lambeau was
      fired during the 1954 preseason after he allowed the players to
      have beer in the team's hotel and owner George Preston Marshall
      found out about it. Lambeau retired as coach for good.

    • @armorybrunotjr.3204
      @armorybrunotjr.3204 4 года назад +2

      The stuttering quarterback was the forgettable Bobby Garrett, who supposedly was to be the quarterback of the future in Cleveland with
      the Browns, but because Paul Brown already had veteran Otto Graham
      as a starter and George Ratterman already groomed as a backup in 1954, Garrett was dealt to the Packers. It was a speech impediment, not his
      arm, that kept him on the bench.

      If you think the team's record was bad during that time, so was their stadium. During the 1950s, the league warned Green Bay to build a
      new palatial home. The original City Stadium was their home since
      1925, but by the 1950s, it was becoming archaic and had only 20,000
      seats. The league was going to force the Packers to move if they
      didn't come up with a new home. In 1957, the Packers opened New City
      Stadium, which had 50,000 seats and was build expressly for football.
      In 1965, New City Stadium was renamed Lambeau Field.
