The MUD I play/code for is called Midnight Sun 2 and has been going continuously since 1991, starting like Essexmud, as a college project at a college in Sweden. It was never a very big MUD, at its peak, it would have 30/40 people online at once, and these days it's usually 0-10, but there are still people playing actively, and it's still under active development.
what a blast from the past. i started playing MUDs for much the same reasons as you around the same time. the one i was most into was Shadows of Isildur, a very similar style to the Star Wars enforced RP permadeath game you played, but based on (maybe obviously) Lord of the Rings.
You probably already came across this other scholar but if not (or for anyone else's interest), psychologist and professor Sherry Turkle has done a bit of work on early MUDs as well. Definitely in the 1995 book, Life on the Screen, but I think also in her 1984 work, The Second Self. Great video merritt
Got here from 1900hotdog, then went to your other strangeness, now I'm here. A nice, odd little journey, much subscribe.
These videos rule. Thank you
I don't think I ever played on a MUD, but I was involved in some forums that did text-based roleplaying. Some were DBZ, and some were Naruto.
Huh these sound super cool, wonder what a modernized version of muds would look like
