I was born in Dominican Republic, live in NYC and I look very Indian. I have been bullied by ignorant people who can't tell the difference and also I have had so much kindness from actual Indian People. Having this experience has opened many doors to my mind. I like to think that I contribute to Indian culture by enjoying and sharing the values. Life is awesome.

I try to explain I can't speak but then I get a little judgement like how don't you know how to speak your own language 😂 it's cute and I should really learn the language since it's come up so often.

I was born in Africa and lived in Africa for most of my life, and believe it or not, even there, the Indian scholars were insulted & and yes, bullied for being Indian - Muslim or Hindu. Racism was rife *the order of the day* in my country of birth. Having said that, even mixed race children & and people along with the indigenous black people were discriminated against - hence bullied in their own country by the other racial groups.
We have to see this in the context of its time period.
You can bet your bottom dollar, there was discrimination & bullying globally of people of colour, as is the case today, BUT to a lesser degree today.

Dude my friend is skinny slim and dark with beautiful almond eyes, she is called South Indian in north, while she is North Indian. And yes bullies too. I am Marathi, and because of Mumbai based outsider vs local riots back in the day, a professor would keep taunting me throughout the class. My friend suggested me to record and share on social media. But that guy had a family to feed. He was so insensitive that he would say erase the Maratha history from schools. He would ping at us and say that why you guys speak your language in break time. I told him you can speak Hindi in Maharashtra, but we just have laws to have signs and shop names written in Marathi script, which is same as Hindi. WTF he was on I don’t know.
But that’s the thing with frustrated North Indians. They even go to Andamans for vacaycay and then say how pathetic coastal life is.

So when you’re getting bullied as a child, you are just going to pack your stuff and then what? “Hey mom and dad, let’s go back to India.” It’s not that simple. It’s a bit reductive to say just leave. Also, most parents are unaware how their children are being ostracized because of their ethnicity. Most parents assume their children will have a better future. What is a bullied child or 1st/2nd generation adults going to do?
