This is giving such a bad image for a company but the truth is i had a Sophie as a child, my sophie got passed on to my two brother before it got destroyed by our dog... there wasnt any mold inside and it was over 5 years old. same with the one my borther got after this and that my sister got after, we ended up cutting it's head off one day when my sister wasnt using it anymore and i don't recall any mold.. why? cause my mom was cleaning them every week wich is what every parents should do--'
i forgot to add why i think those videos are so bad: the company is still hand crafting those, they are still made in france by people earning a decent income and not in some asian country by underpaid people in unhumain conditions.
it saddens me to see such a good and long established company getting bad press because some people do not follow the instructions and used them as bath toys and/or didn't clean them properly

I think the point is to not have anywhere for water or wetness to get trapped inside bc if that happens then mold will grow. Even if you find a way to thoroughly rinse out the saliva there will still be water inside which grows mold after sitting for awhile

Solutions:
1. Don't submerge the Sophie
2. Plug the hole with glue so no water can get in.
3. When you clean sophie, completely submerge her in BLEACH WATER and make sure it's thoroughly cleaned inside with it. THEN rinse it thoroughly with non-bleach water. Then let dry COMPLETELY before allowing your kid to play with it.
4. When in doubt, get a new one. Don't buy USED TEETHING TOYS.
The kid WILL NOT DIE I promise. Back in the good old days when I used to keep nursery at church all toys went into the bleach and water bin, were scrubbed, then went into the pure water bin, were scrubbed, and then were dried thoroughly. The bleach does not remain inside the toy for your kid to drink. I promise. If it still smells like bleach, soak it in water again and dry it again before giving it to the kid.
Lots of daycares and other places like that soak toys in bleach bins (it's not pure bleach, it's the correct amount of bleach to water) before scrubbing and soaking in a plain water bin for sanitation. It's the same as pet stores often soak things that go in fish tanks, in animal habitats (for reptiles and small animals) etc in bleach bins before soaking them in straight water bins (and then for fish in treated water bins because the PH has to be right) before drying them and putting them back in the tanks or habitats.
But truth of the matter is...if people followed the directions (that say don't submerge sophie EVER) there wouldn't be mold in her. "a little baby slobber" is not going to fill it up with water and cause mold. That thing was FULLY SUBMERGED in order to get mold to grow.

If you plug the hole with glue it won't be squishy and it wouldn't squeak
Anitazxx, Yes, you will stop the squeaking. But if you want to submerge the sophie (which is against the user manual) then you can assure no water will get in if you plug the hole. No water gets in, no mold grows. Problem solved. All of those were individual suggestions that will solve the problem. Pick which one you want and it will prevent mold.
Bleach will make the color fade and I wouldn't want my kid playing with something I soaked in bleach water

that 80s kid BESS I read an article on this, and the reason is that they are used in water, which is not advised as moisture is trapped inside and cannot escape. Perfect growing conditions for mould. No way the company's fault, the child/parents fault. But yeah, that should make an effort to stop this though.

I don't think it's the products fault. Because like he said any rubber toy with a hole if wet can grow mold. If they say not to put it in water than it's only the consumers fault. If you want to bring it in water cover the hole with hot glue or something like that so water won't get in.

I think as long as you dont put it in water or a moist area like a hot car or next to hot lunch you should be fine. Think some people are scared now but just pay attention where its left.

From what I'm seeing, these are relatively safe toys for teething children if used properly. It should be easy for a child to get too distracted by other toys in the bath to think of putting this giraffe in with them, if more parents read warning labels or directions they'd probably take this more seriously and keep the giraffe away from the tub, and sanitize properly.

Thanks guys for bringing this to my attention because my little dogs take their rubber balls and other squeaky toys outside and then if it rains or sprinkler system is on it could get mold inside as well. I'm going to do a test on some of the rubber balls and other toys I have rescued from the yard. It could make our little fur babies sick as well!!!

Not just the Sophie toy, bit common sense that any squeaky toy that has the little air valve/hole that is put in water and sucks water up into it, will get nasty on the inside....evidently, the ones that had mold had been used is water, like it is advised not to do. Just a baby chewing in it would not cause it. In order to advise people to use/or not to use, you would need to know how each one had really been used. Why not cut open other toys that are actually bath toys....and see what happens.
Mold is a northern Welsh town popularised by the location of where the golden cape was found ( which is now in London ) .
There are roughly 11,000 people in mold , which is quite surprising due to the size of the town .
I bet babies are putting their mouths on the air vents and squeezing it. That would suction in some of their saliva and the moisture would cause mould to grow. I'm sure the company realised this was a design flaw but sales are much more important than consumer safety.

Uni of life the universe and everything And people will put them in the dishwasher, or submerge them in hot water to clean them. Some let their kids play with it in the bathtub- these all being far more water/moisture exposure/intake through the squeaker hole than is meant to be. Drool really isn't that big of a concern as they are chewing on one end or the other, and the squeaker is in the middle of the back.

I feel you on lending people stuff and they don't return it. My mom let our neighbor borrow my favorite mug and she never returned it but one day when we were at their house since I wanted some water, they showed us where the cups were and there my mug was, inside their cabinet
