Mary Wells was the first big female star at Motown, soon to be followed by Martha Reeves and then Diana Ross
Guys, both "My Guy" and "My Girl" were written by Smokey Robinson.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Another great singer from the Motown era in the 60's. Smokey Robinson wrote most of her songs. "My Guy" was Mary Well's biggest hit but she had a lot of great songs such as "Bye Bye Baby", "I Don't Want To Take A Chance", "The One Who Really Loves You", "You Beat Me To The Punch", "Two Lovers", "Laughing Boy", "Your Old Standby", "You Lost The Sweetest Boy", "What's Easy For Two Is So Hard For One", "Operator" etc. She did some duets with Marvin Gaye "Once Upon A Time" & "What's The Matter With You Baby".
Doing her career she had double sided hits - Ms. Hitmaker
Had her greatest hits in 1970 that had been reissued on a budget record label . Wore the groves out of the LP record ,I played it that much . Loved her singing that early Motown bossanova style soul . Always made you feel she was singing personally to you alone . Female singers back then had more class & elegance & didn’t need to appear half naked on stage to get attention .
Loved this back then, still do. Timeless great song! Shindig & Hullabaloo were great shows were current artists sung their current songs. TWO LOVERS & YOU BEAT ME TO THE PUNCH r equally as good. Appreciate u reacting to one or both.
Mam B just listened to Bobby Sherman Julie Do you love me.
My favorite songs coming out of the Motown sound, and they had a lot of chart toppers. But this particular song by Mary Wells has great memories and we used to sing to the lyrics… These are the great songs because we remember the words 65 years later
I can still sing along with her after all these years. Great song!!!
Me too!!
Isn’t it cool when you hear a song from your past...and you effortlessly start singing along? I love that...and my almost 76 year-old brain has a wide range of music...all of it available...in an instant!! ❤️🎼❤️
I use to sing this song at Karaoke’s, I did pretty good…loved Mary Wells.♥️👏👏👏
Rip to to a great Singer Mary Wells we still miss you
Mary Wells is the GREATEST female singer in Rock & Soul History! "Two Lovers", "You Beat Me To The Punch" & "The One Who Really Loves You".3 other of her million sellers.
The song My Guy by Mary Wells was released a year (1964) before the song My Girl (1965) by the Temptations.
I hope your mom gets better soon Shawn. I know we all want to be done with this Virus but your reactions has helped us all with great music. Great reaction to a great singer. 🎵🎶🎵
Smokey Robinson wrote “My Guy “for Mary Wells“ first, then did the sequel for the Temptations with “My Girl” and both of them were hits.
WOW! Mary Wells so good. great reaction have a good day S&M.
She was so good I was sorry to hear of her passing away many years a great loss
Ahhhh. I enjoyed that. 😉 🎤🎼
Love this. Used to have loads of Motown on vinyl 💙🎶✊
For a brief time, Mary Wells was the first female Motown superstar You must listen to her The One Who Really Loves You, it features her trademark ah o ah o ah ah o style. R.I.P. Ms Wells
Just to let you know this song was written by Smokey Robinson who also wrote My Girl for The Temptations. He wrote a lot of Mary's songs and also for other Motown artist including himself with his group The Miracles.
I have to say that Mary's decision to leave Motown right after My Guy was a hit was a very unwise one.
This old video is so wonderful because she is singing live here and her voice is so pure. She had quite a few hits thanks to Smokey Robinson authoring her hits.
Shawn and Mel. You guys are so dang cute! I LOVE love love that you are listening to my music, the stuff I grew up on. Now that you guys are getting to know these songs, we can now call them "our" songs...
She was so good
8th Grade, I was in love Merry Wells!
Ms Mary Wells has an incredible catalog! You Beat Me to the Punch, Two Lovers, The One Who Really Loves You, and Old Stand By! Love that your reactions are to the best music ever! Thank you for appreciating where it all came from!🥰🥰
Exactly I suggested Two Lovers & Punch. RUclipsrs almost always react to what others react to. Probably don't get blocked and don't want the hassle of reacting to a new song and get blocked. Also if a song is popular more likely to generate more likes meaning more money. Do u notice how most "like" every song. It can't be possible! Either new viewers won't click to watch or upset patreons who donate and won't donate. Im listening to music over 60 years, like thousands of song, dislike or hate, some songs.
When I was a teenager in the 60's, I used to fall asleep to this every night. Finally my mom said "Can't you play something else, because I even know the words to this."
You got to hear the studio version. She has a lot of songs you got to hear. Just look them up.
The faces at 2:28 😂 Im a young black man from Belgium (23) and had been such a huge Motown fan since MJ passed away when I was 8. You should listen to tracks such as "Darling Baby" by The Elgins or "A Love She Can Count On (Alternative Mix)" by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles ! Love love
Blessings to your Mom!
The lyrics were definitely Smokey Robinson. The ending was her Mae West's "Why dont you come up and see me sometime" voice.
One of the best of them all
Another winner. Thank you.
This song was on AM radio (only one channel had good songs!!!🤣) all the time in the mid-sixties.
I’ve always heard of Mary wells. Thanks for matching up the name and the face with the music!
Actually My Girl was written as an answer song to My Guy. After the release of My Girl the The Temptations with The Supremes released a song called "My Guy, My Girl" that was a combination of both songs. I loved both songs.
saw her perform at the Shrine in LA in the 80s
That's not the recording that was on the radio with Motown background singers and more distinctive horns... she's singing that live and still sounds awesome! And Darlene Love is one of the background singers here
Can't remember what I had for breakfast, but I remember every word to this song. Loved it then and love it now.
Ha ha 😂 Me too! Every word, but can't find my keys, lol.
"You Lost The Sweetest Boy " is one of Marys' 2 sided hits & features both the Supremes & Temptations on back ground vocal.Mary set the pace for all female soul singers after her. She was the FIRST in the modern era to also dress in high fashion. She was saying "Black is Beautiful" before the saying caught on.When she walked out on stage audiences went crazy. She was 16 when she wrote & recorded her first record/hit "Bye Bye Baby" I was in love with her since I was 11 in 1961.
Praying for Mom and another great song is you beat me to the punch.back then men respected women and themselves and each other
Loves Mary Wells!
Hope all is good with you & Shawn’s Mom 🤒 This song by Miss Mary was very popular! My girlfriends & I used to sing & dance to this one 💃💕
You should watch the movie Sister Act & hear Whoopie Goldberg sing this song (with a few changes) you’ll love it) watch the movie to understand the situation 😻
Oh yeah. This was one of my favourite songs to listen to in the 60s.And I STILL love it.
OMG Shindig! I'd forgotten about that show! She has a smooth, rich voice. A class act, exactly
I love watching the two of you! I can tell "good energy" is really the way y'all try to live your lives.
Keep on keepin' on!
If you get chance some time, check out Delbert McClinton. "You can leave your hat on" I do believe you might enjoy the heck out of it..
Good Energy to you!
I’m stealing this from a comment I just read but “two lovers” and “You beat me to the punch” 2 great songs
Add her songs THE ONE WHO REALLY LOVES YOU and YOU BEAT ME TO THE PUNCH....her best!!!!
Everybody feel better! Oh yeah! That's LIVE!! Beautiful lady. Beautiful voice. The Blossoms singing backup!
Mel, you digging this one! "Sassy and classy".
Darlene Love of the Blossoms dated Bill Medley of the Righteous brothers!
Praying your Mom is feeling better and your thumb too! Love your reactions!
Shawn and Mel great review. Try listening to Gigolo recorded for Epic. Her club sound.
The three girls in the background are the Blossoms 💕the one in the middle is Darlene Love (Lethal Weapon)also a member of Bobby Sox & the Bluejeans 🥰😬
🤔 still waiting for my guy 🤭
Great song!
Australia 💕 Christina
So sorry to hear about your mom God bless her for speedy recovery ✌️
Sending love and prayers your way
I was 13 when I heard this number on the radio....probably around 1963. That era had so much fabulous music 👍👍
I seem to remember some industry scuttlebutt about Mary Wells and George Harrison (of The Beatles) going out together. ;-)
An extremely talented female who could really deliver a song.
Prayers for your Mom my friend...Hope she's better soon...And I hope your thumb will get better fast.
God doesn't make junk. God makes great days & people like you & Shawn
God does make a lot of people who are less pleasant than these two, though ... !
💙🙏 for your Mom's full recovery
Beautiful song.
I think you’ll definitely enjoy reacting to the song “Boogie Nights” by HEATWAVE. It’s a song that’ll make you dance.
When my mum was a girl, she didn't have to look out for people who wanted to take her down. People are more self-serving at the expense of others now, the whole world of people has become more corrupt and we have to watch out for ourselves. It is so sad that we can't just be happy for each other anymore.
Hope you and family have quick recovery.....you both are doing an EXCELLENT job......Mary Wells is also known as the First Lady of Motown.....She was churning out hit after hits in the early days of Motown.....here are some other MONSTER hits from her
YOU BEAT ME TO THE PUNCH
TWO LOVERS
THE ONE WHO REALLY LOVES YOU
My Guy was first...and then the Temptations answered with My Girl. Unfortunately Mary Wells walked out on her Motown contract right after My Guy was a hit after she had had several hits with Motown. It was all about money. Unfortunately Mary was never able to duplicate the success she had had at Motown after leaving to go to other record companies.
Hey Guys, great reaction. Motown in the house. Next do "Beat you to the Punch."
Mary wells is the best when it comes to motown, love her songs. Two lovers and beat me to the punch are favorites, listen to more of her :)
Great reaction, even though Mary was confident and happy singing on stage she had a very troubled life with an abusive marriage and drug addicion! she died at the very young age of 49 RIP Mary Wells
Great song, Mary Wells was amazing. Shawn, Prayers for your Mom.🙏
Hey Bob, thank you so much for watching and sending prayers🙂
Prayers for your mom. 🙏🙏💐💐
Another great female singer of the 60's. ❤
Prayers for you and mom.
Written and produced by the LEGENDARY Iconic musical Genius Mr William Smokey Robinson
Prayers for your Mom, Shawn.
Mary Wells song ,you beat me to the punch.try it. thank you.
Thank you for reacting to this great artist. If you like her music try "Laughing Boy" and "You Beat Me to the Punch. Very unique sounding songs.
I love this classic song and Mary Wells is a legend!❤❤
I want to hear Mel sing this just from your intro I think she could do it.
Hi Shawn and Mel . This was a good song catchy tune clever lyrics beautiful singer with very nice voice from the days when the radio was fun.
Now you are ready for some Mary Wells and Marvin Gaye, What’s the Matter With You Baby.
Another great song. I love the songs you are reacting to. Keep it em coming. ❤🎤🎶🇬🇧
Mary Wells has so many hits! My favorite is Two Lovers. ❤
Man, I'd forgotten that song - haven't heard it in over 50 years ... what a treat!
💙💙
I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s, the country was still going through segregation in many places, but, music is music, it doesn’t see color. Many djs played music by the way it sounded not the color of the singers. I didn’t care who sang it, if liked it, I’d buy it
✨Loved This Since Elementary/Grade School❕Love Both of You, Your Reactions & Channel❕If a Bio Pic is Ever Done of Miss Mary Wells, Does Anyone Think Gabrielle Union would Make a Good Fit Looks Wise❔👍🏽✨💖✨
This my song to my husband at our wedding, still married after 27 years-- sorry about your mother
I can hear Smokey Robinson singing Ooo Baby Baby in the back of my mind right now. 🎶💖
One of the great building blocks in the foundation of Motown.R.I.P Mary Wells."You Beat me to the punch", is one of My favorites."Don't mess with Bill"and "Two Lovers".
Dating myself I guess, I still have the 45 version of this!!
❤❤❤!!!
Huge hit, she had some great songs.
Nothing beats a classic like this song, I loved her music! Nothing will ever top Motown music
She did duets with Marvin Gaye as well.
(((((((Prayers for your mother, Shawn)))))))🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏾🙏🏿🙏🏼🙏🏾💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
This song was used in the movie Sister Act
"Baby I'm Yours "by Barbara Lewis and "Wayward Wind" by Patsy Cline
You two seem to have a great relationship. I'd love to see your reaction to a song by Randy Travis, called
"On The Other Hand". I think you'd love it.
She was Motown's first superstar.
Good one!
Prayers for you and your mom. God Bless all of you...
Prayersfor your mom Shaun
"My Guy" was a year before "My Girl" by the Temptations.
