Her last name is pronounced "FA-BRAY", and she was best known as the actress who played the role of Mary Stone, the daughter on the sitcom, "The Donna Reed Show", which ran from 1958 through 1963. (oh, and by the way, you are now officially my favorite couple, as well as my favorite RUclips music reaction/review channel.)
I wouldn't say "best known." The Donna Reed Show introduced her to the public and brought her her Initial fame, but that was Reed's show. Shelley really made a name for herself during her long run co-starring on "Coach," which brought her a couple Emmy nominations. I imagine her early career was probably influenced by her aunt, Nanette Fabray, who guest-starred as her mother a couple times on Coach.
Oh, and The Donna Reed Show ran longer than that: 1958-1966. Coach ran from 1988-1997. In between those two series she also had a supporting role for a couple seasons on One Day at a Time.
YES! You're right! Totally forgot Spinout! Oh my mom would of smacked me up side the head for that (God Rest Her Soul) raised me around Elvis and so many true great artists of the day.🤭👍
She had a voice that wouldn’t quit. She DID sound like an Angel! Donna Reed was looking at her TV daughter with the proudness of any mother hearing her daughter singing a love song about a boy. She was supposed to be 16-17 at the time. The very first time she sang on the show. It was magic!!!
Always loved this record.every time I hear this record. I think of my brother who passed away in 1967 at age 11 this was one of his favorite songs😥🙏 Thank You
Shelly did NOT want to record, the TV Producers told her if she wanted to be on the show the next season she WOULD record. The Background vocals (and Shelly really LOVED them) are Darlene Love, Fanita James & Jean King-the Blossoms).
After Ricky Nelson became a teen idol with his music on The Ozzy and Harriet Show Shelly was forced to do this song for The Donna Reed Show. She never did another. Shelly was also on the TV show Coach.
She was 20 when this song was released February 1962, part of her TV show The Donna Reed Show. Shelly was mainly an actress. She played in the Donna Reed Show (1958-1966) and Coach (1989-1997) among many other acting roles.
This is a clip from the TV show, the Donna Reed Show, where the mother (Donna Reed) is watching her (TV) daughter sing and realizing she is all grown up now at college.
@Shawn and Mel...You guys should react next to another Johnny song from the same era (1962) ...Johnny Get Angry by the great singer Joannie Sommers. The song was actually kind of funny but sweet.
This is part of an episode of “The Donna Reed Show” which aired 1958-1963. I loved this show when I was a kid! This particular episode was in 1961 when I was six years old, and I was completely smitten with Shelley Fabares! Everyone called me Johnny then, so when I heard this song (one of the first songs from my childhood memories), I was mesmerized by it and her angelic voice! Lol! It was on all the radio stations, and I memorized most of it. 😂
One of the biggest hits of (1961) was "Johnny Angel" by Shelly Fabares. This clip was from the 1961 hit television series titled "The Donna Reed Show." Donna Reed played the mother of Shelly Fabares in the show. Donna Reed also was an Academy Award for her role "In From Here To Eternity (1953). And became very popular as Jimmy Stewarts wife in the world renown Holiday Christmas Movie " It's A Wonderful Life (1946)." Shelly Fabares also was in many movies with Elvis Presley and played the wife in the 80's television series "Coach."
U ever notice how when u listen to old music it makes u feel a certain way. There is nothing and i mean NOTHING in todays music that even comes close to oldies music. Nothing but talent and the songs actually meant something!! 1st class all the way.
That look by Donna Reed towards her tv daughter is the look of pride. Donna did not realize how good her daughter could sing. The Donna Reed show was an awesome 50's/60's sitcom. The person who played her brother did a song in the show as well called "My Dad" by Paul Peterson. It was also a top 10 hit. He was also in the original Mickey Mouse Club in the mid 50's. P.S. This was Shelly's only hit. She never really considered herself a singer. She was however, a very accomplished movie and tv actress spanning over 4 decades.
Paul also sang a novelty song, "She Can't Find Her Keys". I have both of his songs. My favorite, though, is his tv sister's song, the almost unearthly beautiful, "Johnny Angel", which I loved as soon as I heard the first verse!!!! Like most kids of that time, I watched the "Donna Reed Show" almost every week. I must have been 8 or so when the song came out, but I had already loved music since birth.
She is the only actress who played Elvis’ love interests in his movies. They were just close friends, but she loved him and still misses him. Sweet girl/lady.
I love your reaction to the video and thanks for posting it. It's fun to see young people reacting to music from long ago. Back then young men and women were thinking of love, someday getting married and starting a family. It was a very idealistic and yet a very romantic time. Something that we may never see again.
Shelly was in 50s The Donna Reed Show and 3 of Elvis Presley movies... Girl Happy Spinout & Clambake. I enjoyed her in 80s on One Day at a Time and in 90s on Coach
Thank you so much for doing this one. I was so in love with Shelly Fabares (fah-bray) from the Donna Reed show, to her Elvis movies. (Only actress to do multiple Elvis movies) My favorite is Clambake and her role as Christine in the sitcom "Coach". She still looks beautiful today. God Bless
In an interview, wished I remembered with whom and when, she said the show producers asked her to sing a song. She ABSOLUTELY didn't want to ! She told the interviewer that she didn't think she had the voice to pull it off. But, they never stopped bugging her and she finally gave in . That record was produced and circulated and went to the upper 10 of the Pop Charts. She was featured on American Bandstand for that song ! She was my 7 yr. old heart throb, I thought she was so beautiful !🥰
I was already in kindergarten in 1961 in my old hometown of NYC when this was new on the radio. The woman and man are her parents on the TV series. It was called the Donna Reed Show.
God, does this remind me of when I was little. My mom and aunt mostly. Makes me cry now. 😢 P.S. Shelly Fabares played in (Clambake) an Elvis movie too btw. Just seen it last week since they're showing loads of Elvis movies cuz of his death on Aug. 16, 77.
The woman that is staring at Shelley is Shelley’s TV mom, Donna Reed. Donna Reed was a movie star before moving over to her own TV show: The Donna Reed Show. Check out her movies: They Were Expendable, It’s A Wonderful Life, From Here To Eternity and many more. Shelley went on to star in the sitcom Coach.
Indeed a sweet angelic and soothing song.. used to sing it to a high school sweetheart but would replace Johnny with her name.. Lol. The things we do as teenagers in love.
Shelley Fabares and Paul Peterson played the characters of the teenaged children on "The Donna Reed Show." Please do a reaction video for Paul Peterson's song, "My Dad." I'd like to hear your comments on that song. Thank you.
Originally Shelley did not want to do the song because she didn't think she could sing. She was told either do the song or she'd be out of a job. It's beautiful and she sounds like an angel. I'm so happy someone finally reacted to it.
Shelley Fabares (niece of Nannette Fabray) had a number of single releases & a couple of albums. Albums: "SHELLEY"; "THE THINGS WE DID LAST SUMMER" (Her version of hit songs by other artists); and "LOVE TRIANGLE" (an album with Paul Peterson and James Darren). Some of her singles: "JOHNNY LOVES ME"; "RONNIE, CALL ME WHEN YOU GET A CHANCE"; "BIG STAR"; .
Shelley Fabares (pronounced Fa-ba-Ray according to the sound bites she recorded for radio stations on the CD from rhino records) released two albums and many singles. She also sang the song “Big Star” on the show.
Shelley starred as Mary Stone, daughter. on the Donna Reid Show in the 60's. As she grew into adulthood she left the show & was THE KING'S leading lady in 3 of his Hollywood 60's films. Shelley starred in ELVIS' movies more times than any other actress in Hollywood. I had a big time crush on Shelley ever since I saw her on the Donna Reid Show, along with millions of other pubescent guys 🤣!
The woman you said looked like she was intrigued. That is June Lockheart. Who played on the series lost in space. She was very Popular in the 1960 era. I met her daughter at a Sci fi convention. Her daughter looks exactly like her.
Excellent choice. No one on RUclips has ever reacted to this song despite the fact that it's good, it's important to 60s pop culture, and it's very representative of it's time. Frankly, even the few reactors who are doing 50s and 60s music lack the detailed understanding of the early 60s to pick this. Good for you. Recorded in Late '61, at the legendary Gold Star Studio, with the legendary LA Musicians known, as " The Wrecking Crew " , with The Blossoms, backing her. This song was so, so big, in '62 ! -------------I was 15 y/o, a sophomore in Denver, at South High School. --------------MJL< 76 y/o
Though she recorded an album she says in interviews that she didn't record more because she didn't like the sound of her voice she didn't think she could sing.
This is from the TV family show that she and the lady, who played her mom, were in (The Donna Reed Show). The look you see in the mom's face is wistful. She's realizing that her "little girl" is beginning to think of boys, that she's growing up and someday soon she's goin to lose her to someone else, even though this is only a song .
This is a clip from the Spring 1962 episode of " The Donna Reed Show " , starring Donna Reed, an Academy Award winning actress, playing a housewife, with a husband & 2 teen-age kids, one being 17 y/o Shelly Fabares [ FAB-RAY ] , who was ORDERED to sing this song . She was not a singer ! Not at all, & it took some real wizardry at Gold Star Studio, to get her voice to sound like this. The Legendary Blossoms are backing her . ------In the Spring of '62, this song was SO BIG, all over AM Top 40 radio ! In Denver, I was a Sophomore in HS, 15 y/o, & the song was #1 on KTLN, 1250 AM, forever !! ----------Karen Carpenter also has a gorgeous version of this song. -------------MJL< 75 y/o
Michele( Shelley)Ann Marie Fabares actress and singer known for the "DONNA REED SHOW" and "COACH" won two primetime Emmy Award nominations. "Johnny Angel "reach number on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Has been married to Mike Farrell since 1984.
How I wish we still had great shows like Donna Reed that the whole family could watch. She grew up on Donna Reed the later on she was a co-star on Coach. She also made several movies with Elvis and I think one or two beach movies. Beach movies were really popular back then and she was very popular. This song was a BIG HIT for her. I miss those innocent days...💔...This video is a clip from The Donna Reed show.
The TV teen stars of this era were forced to record songs. Shelley Fabares was a relectatnt participant but it did result in a lovely song. Well into the doo whop era with the backup singers doing the refrain (French for repeat).
Shelly Fabares is also married to Mike Farrell from "Mash." Her TV brother was played by Paul Peterson who has been THE force in fighting against exploitation of child actors, through his foundation, A Minor Consideration.
Hey guys the woman you’re listening to right now her name is Shelly February and she also played in the movie with Elvis Presley in the movie girl happy clambake and spin out yes she did three movies with the king himself
The woman is Donna Reed, and she plays the mother of Shelley on the Donna Reed show. THATS why she's looking at her like that, it's the first time she heard her sing. It never fails to amaze me how many reviewers never have the common sense to do any research whatsoever on the artists or clips they review. It's 2022, we have the internet now, pretty easy to find this stuff out.
It's funny you say she sounds like an angel. Shelly said that she was mortified when they told her they wanted her to sing on the show, because in her words, she could not carry a tune to save her life. They told her not to worry, they'll make her sound terrific, and they did. 😉 I was in love with her when I was a kid, and her TV mom Donna Reed too. 💘💘
Shelley Fa-Ba_Ray. She was beautiful. She is still alive..last time I saw a photo her hair was pink.
This is from the "Donna Reed Show". Donna Reed played Shelly Fabres' Mom who looks proudly on as her TV daughter performs.
That's her TV mom Donna Reed watching her, she's proud of her daughter.
Loved the donna Reid show.
Her last name is pronounced "FA-BRAY", and she was best known as the actress who played the role of Mary Stone, the daughter on the sitcom, "The Donna Reed Show", which ran from 1958 through 1963. I wouldn't say "best known." The Donna Reed Show introduced her to the public and brought her her Initial fame, but that was Reed's show.

And she played in 2 Elvis movies!
And she was in Elvis' movie's. I liked Girl Happy the best
Darlene love and the Blossoms singing back ground, beautiful sound
I loved that TV show and she was my idol.
Shelley co-starred with Elvis in three of his movies.
YES! You're right! Totally forgot Spinout! Oh my mom would of smacked me up side the head for that (God Rest Her Soul) raised me around Elvis and so many true great artists of the day.🤭👍
That's her "mom" watching proudly. It was a very popular TV show late 50's to mid 60's.
Oh wow. Brings me back to my childhood watching the Donna Reed show. This was her one and only song
I think of my brother who passed away in 1967 at age 11 this was one of his favorite songs😥🙏 Thank You
still remember the first time I heard this song
I was six years old in 1961 when she recorded it, and I was madly “in love” with Shelley Fabares! 😂
These songs were so innocent back then, I love it
This song always felt like the musings of a 15-16 year old girl in love with an older boy. That pure sweet innocence of a young crush.

Shelly Fabares was really an actress.

I had such a crush on Shelly when I was a kid. She was gorgeous and had such a beautiful voice. This was an iconic song of the early '60s.
She grew up to be Christine Armstrong on the TV sitcom "Coach".
And I watch the reruns of "Coach" twice a night every night!!!
That’s definitely how I as an 80s child remember her!

She DID have one album, which I still have, and had a lot of great songs on it. I never missed the Donna Reed Show, I had a MAD CRUSH on Paul Peteson!

Easy on the Ears! It was on the radio like forever back then. Darlene Love and The Blossoms sang back up. #1 back in 1962. :)

Shelley was 17 when she recorded this song. It went to # 1 on Billboard in the US.
She is also one of the few women who starred in two Elvis movies
I was 5 when she sang this song. I would go to my swing in the backyard and hang upside down swinging and singing this song. Donna Reed Show.
Shelly Fabres also played Christine Armstrong on the sitcom Coach (1989-97)
I had such a crush on her back in the day
So innocent.
Remember Shelley from "Coach"? She was Christine, his co-star/girlfriend/then wife!
Shawn &Mel this is from the Donna Reed Show. That lady that looks so proud is her Mother
God, does this remind me of when I was little. My mom and aunt mostly. Makes me cry now. 😢

The echo used on this song gives it that "angelic" sound.

She was in Speedway I believe, with Elvis.
And She also played on the 80s TV show , "COACH" with Crieg Nelson.
Shelley Fabares (pronounced Fa-ba-Ray according to the sound bites she recorded for radio stations on the CD from rhino records) released two albums and many singles. She also sang the song “Big Star” on the show.
60’s Music was all angelic
Love her and her in a few Elvis movies , but ultimately as Christine on Coach. Fantastic show that still cracks me up😄
All guys had a crush on Her!
Shelley starred as Mary Stone, daughter. on the Donna Reid Show in the 60's. As she grew into adulthood she left the show & was THE KING'S leading lady in 3 of his Hollywood 60's films. Mel, I crack up when you react.
Shelley Fabares was the only female artist to knock Elvis out of number one on the hit charts with this song.
As someone else has already pointed out, her name is pronounced Fabray. This genre is the ballad form of early rock.
This is an episode of "The Donna Reed Show."
Love it, and in keeping with Angel songs, Try Angel Baby, with Rosie and the originals, a The Crest song, Trouble in Paradise.
The mom, Donna Reed, was the female lead in the Christmas movie, It's a Wonderful Life. I had a crush on both her and Shelley when I was a kid.

Love this song
Though she recorded an album she says in interviews that she didn't record more because she didn't like the sound of her voice she didn't think she could sing.
This was my mother's favorite song because my Dad's name was Johnny, although he was no angel.
Lol 😂
Let it play geezzz
The mom, Donna Reed, also was the wife of Jimmy Stewart in the classic Xmas movie, 'It's a Wonderful life'.
