He makes it seem so easy. I taught English Conversation to adults for 16 years and very few non-Americans can pull it off. I appreciate his effort to explain how the American r works.
@@foonxd in most other languages it's either guttural or rolled, english is the only language i've come across that uses such an awkward tongue position.
You have such a clean voice, no mumbling at all, and you speak at the perfect pace (slow enough but still natural). Thanks so much. Keep up the brilliant work. 👍
For me as arabic speaker originally "R" is the toughest letter in english cause in arabic R is pronounced by tongue touching the upper frontal teech which sounds like strong and repetitive
Omg this really helped me, I usually make people misunderstand when I say words like red and then they think it sounds like wet, but this video really helped me, thank you.
Hi Luke. Thank you so much for your lessons! You do such great job for us. I have already studied your eight courses and I bought two more a day ago. They are old ones. One is about making clients happy and another one is about job interview. I am enjoying learning them now. I don't have deal with clients but I find this course useful anyway. Sometimes we are clients. So this course can help us to understand people who provide services to us and to get along with people in our daily life. Thanks again!
Thank you for this video. I’m an Italian “R Flipper/Triller” living in the US and the R sounds is the hardest to produce properly for me. You made me realize that I was overdoing it! This helps me a lot ❤
Nice work Luke! Just want to mention that this teaching is valuable for tutors who work with dyslexic kiddos. They need to understand sound production and the physics involved in our very complicated language. Thankful Tutor-
My English accent is already pretty good so I definitely have some sort of idea on how the pronunciation works but wow for some reason hearing you enunciate r that way just made something click in my head
Rolling the tip of your tongue up is only 1/2 of the job. If you want to really make it sound native, you also need to push (or pull) your whole tongue a bit to the back (towards your throat)
Oh man! Thanks for helping us about this. I'm from Brazil and I'm also teaching english to a friend and I she's from Minas Gerais, which is a place that anybody speak words with "R" sound. They used to use the "h" sound instead. So it's something like that: Hadio (radio) and it's so hard to teach her to change this "R/H" and make her speak like "Restaurant, Radio..." but I'm going to use your video.. let's see if I can do it 😄 Thanks a lot!
I still have troubles, I grew up mute here in America but my family is Asian and Mexican, was in speech for 10 years, it's still hard for me, thank you for this video
American (r) is a vowel. You can sustain it until you run out of breath and it sounds the same from start to finish. It's the single monophthong vowel in the word 'drt'. Usually we use the combination of 'er' to represent the sound (ie 'better', 'gather') but that's only because we were brainwashed into believing that (r) is a consonant which led to the false notion that we needed to insert a vowel.
You're totally right in practicality; that's exactly how I teach it to students. I think the speech science wonks have termed it a 'semi-consonantal vowel', though. Which means essentially what you said, but with some weird technicality which gives it a consonant flavor.
@@Vagabondobiondo Yeah. It creates difficulty using vowels as if they are consonants. It's hard to figure out what we're doing with our mouth parts as well. I believe we do similar things with the word 'coordination' where a /w/ approximate may be used between the two /o/'s which gives the second /o/ a consonant flavor but we tend to recognize the /w/ as the consonant sound but we do the same thing with the 2nd /r/ in the word 'error' where we do a vowel /r/, consonant flavored /r/ and then another vowel /r/, an ill-begotten word for certain but we're stuck with it.
Now I have started to hate my pronunciation 😂 because I have been spelling wrong the "R" Sound before I bumped into your video today after that I improved. Thanks a lot 🎉

Hello, I'm wondering if you can pronounce the letter R yet and if you could possibly help me out because I'm also having trouble with it. It will literally mean the world to me❤❤
The most important thing is to NOT roll it (like Spanish). Spanish speakers will always say English speakers must roll the r, the opposite is also true, you must NOT in English. I think focussing on not rolling it is also important, specially for slavs and spanish speakers.
Hi Luke, although I can make the R sound correctly-I hope :-) ( I am a choir singer and I have a good music hearing and I also like an American accent), I 'd like to say you are a great English teacher ! I've figured out how I can explain how to say my name -Jarmila to you. :-) I've figured out it now :-) The 1st letter-J is said like when you say YOU but only the first half of it-just J. And the rest of my name you said correctly. Greetings, Jarmila.
I would suggest that you focus on muscle memory. When you learn a new physical skill, you generally start slow and increase speed as muscle memory builds. For some reason, we tend not to think of pronunciation as a physical skill. But it absolutely is.
