Free speech debate: new guidelines to protect university speakers' 'lawful free speech'

  • The Equalities and Human Rights Commission has published new guidlelines backed by the government and a host of higher education institutions to clampdown on censorship in universities across the country. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
It comes after a number of high-profile incidents in recent years where people invited to speak at universities were "no platformed" by student unions due to concerns about their views.
We're joined by free speech activist and student Alex O'Connor and Senthorun Raj, a lecturer at Keele University who specialises in anti-discrimination law and human rights.

I mean the idea is true to the one who's idea it is. For example someone who believes in something for example Islam well if you follow that let say some one had a debate about womens rights inside the religion of Islam we would find none but few as I say the quarn is old and dirty the ideas of that book and religion are not compatible with today's world nor will they ever just look how far the Muslim majority countries are you would not want live there I seldom say that even they see that it's going no where but they don't now I am sure if you took away the religion of Islam all the people there would progress and would be better off honestly don't you think the same. But that won't happen has Humans who are retarded, blind, brainwashed, selfish, and on general who don't give any chance to criticism , change or new ideas are and will be stuck as people and as a society. Now Europe as brought in mostly Arabs which are mentally damaged from a very harsh path to get here but the knew the what path they were all talking , as such things happen in life Germany is crippled as Germans have been attached killed robed raped by who you as mostly and of not all men who are Muslim and Come from Muslim countries how about the schools no safer as countless of young German children are mobbed, bullied, threatened, by Muslim children who can me from Muslim countries where Islam rule's yet you may argue I am false and these are lies well the media doesn't tell us about it and yet it's happening all over Europe including the UK now if you disagree go to the town's where Muslim live go to the sites which reports on this go to Wikipedia and see how many people have been having hurt you yourself only need to dig around to find truth in the sea of lies.

Both of them have a point.
Senthorun's point is Universitiy spaces need to be protected from certain ideas that are deemed harmful.
Alex's point is that it's OK to protect from hateful speech/words, but the expression of ideas should not be censored.
It's easy to see where Senthorun is coming from. Harmful speech and ideas should not be giving room to spread, but then who gets to decide what is harmfull/hatefull or not? It's a slippery slope that can actually backfire and hamper freedom of expressing anything anyone feels is offensive.
But from Alex's perspective, rather than running from "hateful" ideas, they should be challenged and scrutinized (as all ideas should be). And it would do society better to face these ideas. For in challenging them they can be either defeated and/or something of substance will be gained from them.

One of the more pertinent issues here is what we individually categorise as free speech: some view it as robust, healthy debate, whereas others view it as a chance to say offensive things with no repercussions. I agree that, somewhere down the line, extreme opinions need to be listened to in order to make a sound judgement, but then the other view about having safe spaces is also valid. Regardless of how the media portrays this issue, most people still have their views anyway and will discuss them in small clusters, if not in lecture halls.
