The final boss tends to be the most iconic and memorable fight of any given game, for better or worse, but how does Monster Hunter go about it when the entire series is just boss fights. I think Atlal Ka deserves a special mention, thematically and mechanically. The ultimate bait and switch. It doesn't have much build-up aside from a trailer and one line of dialogue, but that's its gimmick.
We were told to expect a living fortress that could disappear without a trace, only to find out that we're dealing with a golden mantis. It's not even Elder Dragon. But as soon as we change phases, we get to see that there is indeed a mechanical dragon, and Atlal Ka is the puppeteer. It can even use dragonators against you.
After defeating the mech twice, it collapses and blows sand all over. There's a slight pause in music. Eyes glow through the sand, Proof Of A Hero plays. The real battle begins.

Looking back at Rise, I think that Allmother was quite good for a final boss in an mh game. It had sufficient buildup, the mystery of the rampage until Ibushi was revealed, then the mystery of what Ibushi was doing until Narwa was revealed, then the eventual showdown against them both after the long wait wondering where the two of them are.

Iceborne's fatalis and Alatreon can both be considered final bosses and both are some of the best dragon/boss fights in game history full stop. The challenge is here, it's fair, it's spectacular, the designs are god tier, and Fatalis at least has some lore to go with it and gets you invested.

A good question you could do a video on is how well future titles implement a previous game's final boss(es).
For example, Lunastra was the offline final boss of Dos, but due to being Village-only in the original game and introduced to the player before Teostra, she was seen as weaker than her male counterpart, who was *not* a final boss. World tried to rectify this, and it certainly succeeded at making Lunastra a harder fight than any Elder Dragon of the same "Kushala skeleton", but it ended up doing so in a way most players didn't find fun, arguably making her fight worse than when it was easier than Teostra.
Another standout example to me is Shagaru Magala in Sunbreak. While it could appear in the Everwood in 4, it's always been associated with a "single-area arena"-type map like most final bosses, even in Frontier and Explore.
Generations retained Shagaru's signature arena because it is a game directly celebrating the history of the Monster Hunter series, with monsters and locales from numerous past games. Sunbreak is not a Generations game, and it evidently does not take place anywhere near Heaven's Mount, so Shagaru doesn't get the Sanctuary at all. This makes it more akin to the aforementioned Lunastra in World as a returning former offline final boss that *doesn't* get special treatment in regards to where and how you fight it (not counting the repel quest that introduces Lunastra).
It feels like Shagaru was adapted in a much more tame way than Lunastra, likely because it was never competing with an exact counterpart in its debut game that the devs needed to make it distinct from.
Of course, there are also more famous examples like Fatalis, Akantor and Ukanlos, and Alatreon. There's also the other offline final boss with rare reappearances, Monoblos.

The reason fatalis didn't have much build up before the patch was because until after alatreon they had no intentions to add him. It was due to the community misunderstanding capcoms posts and thinking they were teasing him. After seeing how hyped the community was for fatialis they decided they can't just leave it at alatreon, so they made fatalis as a final update. He lacks buildup not because they wanted him to be a surprise, but because they didn't plan him.

  • @quantizedanson

They kind of ruined the “Shrouded Mystery” part for Dire Miralis with the 3U trailer showing Dire Miralis at the end.
I think a lot of people hated Xenojiva/Zorah is the same reason why you and many thinks Ceadeus is kinda boring. I think they were trying to go for the same feeling of going against a giant creature.
And I agree with what you said about Shagaru Magala.
I think they way they build up the tension and hype through storytelling using a mixture of cutscenes, videos and NPC dialogue is what made MH4U's Shagaru fight in Village so great. LR Village's ending video with that MH language song made me shred a few tears haha.
Btw, I suggest you to try MH Portable 3rd ( on PSP / PS3 ) with the English Patch made by fans !
It was kinda disappointing to me that you didn't mention the unique change ichinose director and his team did to Alatreon and a few other 3rd gen monsters, in your previous video about Alatreon.
Even Iceborne copied some of the ideas in terms of Hub designs and monster mechanics ! ( like The part where you deal damage to Alatreon's head to stop it from switching modes )
It's also a prototype for Generations and a concept for Rise if we think about it.
When I played 3U back in the day, I was so disappointed that many good QoL changes in P3rd were not carried into 3U. Just weapon rebalances and a few of many changes.

While I still prefer other final bosses over it since, I have to give some credit to Xenojiiva. As the first final boss to a lot of new players brought into world including myself, Xenojiiva conveyed how insane we could expect the end tier monsters to get for the rest of the series. Sure we already fought elders like Kushalas tornados or Teostras novas but this ethereal almost alien like dragon emerges from the cocoon already around 3 times the size shooting Kamehamehas and erupting the earth. Sure its replay ability is hurt a bit for being a pretty slow fight with a lot of health once you learn it but on first runs, it felt like a war of attrition which is fitting for a climactically tense situation a final boss tends to be. Finding out all this unrefined power was just from a baby made so much sense yet ironically representing how he really was just the beginning for the insanity us fifth fleeters would soon experience in the rest of the series most of us grew excited to finally join in on.

3u was a joke. Ivory Lagi is simply the easiest monster in the game. I havnt fought dire yet but who has the time to solo grind till you can fight it? If ceadeus count that will be my first pick, even if it's tedious as hell they really make the atmosphere and music really epic it feels like you really had to kill the sea god itself for the sake of your people. But still overall they are more flawed, and the credits scene dont add anything just 2 goblin kids playing with mask while we got a festival with lots of people over the world participating in the other one.
P3rd in other hand is much better overall. While the story isn't as personal as 3u i think they did a great job at making zino and amatsu feels like mystical creatures just (super)naturally lurking in the woods(peaks in this case). Zino really make up by his cool moveset and transformation. Amatsu is still literally best boss fight in any game ever. The ambience at the starting area, it continues until he actually appeared. Actually i forgot how the music sounds while fighting it, the whole thing just awed me i guess. When you finally beat it, then a uniqe victory fanfare plays with sky become clears again, man people even classic mh fan who overlook this fight are literally world class criminal i swear.

MHW did that well with some monsters that pay you no mind until you attack them, after you hit them though they fight you immediately. some in MHW are aggressive on sight like teostra who is just like that in lore. Cedeus' theme doesn't do it for me, well made but not my style. i maintail that original fatalis is trash that was just the lore writers going too far to hyp him when the devs forgot to reign them in for what you got. god of monsters, no. god of dissapointment, yes. in MHW he's fun and actually lives up to his hype. he's another one who i dislike the theme though, to me it's ironic that lao shan lung, who's just running from fatalis, gets much more epic music. another case of them option for simplicity is tigrex, they thouhg kushala may have pushed things a bit too fantasy back then so for the next game they wanted to slow down. that's why we got a new skeleton that's just physical power, speed, and screaming. fatalis in MHWI was not planned at all, no clue what they originally intended but if it was a new black dragon i hope it's in sunbreak's final update if it has them or is just the final boss. the reason he was added to MHWI was them doing the render for anniversary to celebrate the series, not just wit the flagships but also the first final boss. this new look had people hoping and begging for him to come back so they caved but i'm fine with that. it proves they listen to us so don't cry about cross play/save. they'll do those at some point, maybe MH6 or portable 6th. 7th gen is the latest i'd expect but doubt it'll be that long.
