Chris Farley was wrong for the part. From what I heard from the clips he did it was nowhere near as good as Mike Myers. I didn't like it at all. I also believe that they wanted to get rid of Farley and use someone else. So when he called and that woman was sent over with drugs I think she was supposed to get him super wasted and release the photos to the public. That's why she took photos of him on the floor just before he died. With such bad publicity they would have been able to get out of the contract with Farley and not look bad. His drug problem was getting out of hand anyway and I think they worried about publicity problems and future movies. He was becoming a problem before the movie was even finished. I think they realized early what a huge hit Shrek would be. But it really needed someone else to polish the role and voice of Shrek, and someone more reliable and stable.

Honestly, the Farley cut deserves to be at least accessible. I’d love to see animators on RUclips try to fully animate the animatic. It’d be interesting to see it released as a 2D film to further contrast the Meyers cut.

I grew up watching polish dub of Shrek and I never really got the Farley/ Myers thing. When I've heard Farley as Shrek it just sounded like... well Shrek to me. It was only later that I realised that Myers has scottish accent and sounds very different in the original version. Now I don't know if it's a coincidence or something but polish dub of Shrek sounds much much closer to the Farley version than the Myers one.

I can kind of see some similarities between Shrek and Monsters Inc. Both are about the idea that monsters have the "job" to scare people but are actually nice once you get to know them and are tired of scaring people.
Also has anyone noticed how similar the character constellation of the Shrek movies is to the Ice Age movies? Shrek= Manny, Fiona = Ellie, Donkey= Sid, Puss in Boots= Diego (they are even both cats and both originally started as enemies of the main characters but then joined them).

It makes me happy that Mike requested the removal of Chris' ties to the film, it was the right thing to do for his former colleague to avoid the whole "taking over" vibe. Im sure some people could see that as malicious but considering they worked together so often on snl they were basically friends, and it mightve hurt mike to just fill in the role that was shaped for his friend.
