For me it was Chris Cornell first that really hit me hard, as I grew up a massive fan of both Soundgarden and Audioslave, and I honestly didn't think any other celeb could hit me that hard until Joey passed followed by Chester 2 months later.
And he did it all with a mask, a long sleeve shirt, and long pants. That's all I can think about when I watch him drum. It makes me sweat just watching.

Not to compare them, but check out Yoshiki of X Japan from back in the 80s/early 90s. It's rather thrashy compared to Slipknot, but dude was hella clean and definitely would give Joey a run for his money in terms of headbanging. 😅
The greatest drummers in history are the ones who are pulling off what sounds like the impossible while being able to play without destroying the song. Just about every great band who's climbed to the top of their music style has had a drummer who has led the way.
@@spranckx David isn't mentioned enough. The drumming on Korn's first two albums is out of this world. Funky, catchy, and hard hitting. Haven't heard another drummer play with that style since, which shows the creativity. Joey and David were both my favorite drummers growing up, amazingly talented musicians.
This was my exact experience watching Disasterpieces for the first time. I actually bought that DVD before I had ever listened to either Iowa or the band's debut album and was absolutely blown away by Joey. I couldn't believe that he could play with such vitality, precision, and technical mastery song after song after song. There's a moment during "Liberate" where he tosses his stick up in the air just as Corey says, "I can't see from here, but I can smell your fear" and catches it before slamming into the next groove that I must have rewound and watched 100,000 times. Words like "legend" are reserved for people like Joey.

As a teenager, I couldn't work out why Joey always sounded different to me than a lot of other drummers. I think it's because he had a musicality to his playing that you don't often see.
Eyeless was what got me into Slipknot, in large part to Joey’s playing… of course Disasterpiece is also just a freaking feat! The guy set a high bar for drummers in heavy metal

Eyeless to me woke me! I never heard anything like it, and there is no other drummer that’s done that to me, he’a the reason I wanted to be a drummer and it started eyeless.. I will never understand how there was ever a slipknot without him.
What I admired the most about Joey is the fact that he stayed humble. He stayed looking out for other bands on a big and small scale. Dude had so much knowledge and passionate for music. Quiet spirit with such a bright light…excuse me…😭🤧❤️
Joey and The Rev are what got me into taking drums more seriously when I was a teenager and it's such a bummer to realize that the guys you looked up to musically and helped you discover a life-long love are both gone
13 years ago I was shocked with Rev. If I'm still drumming to this day, it is because of him. And Joey passing away shocked me again after all these years. Feeling the same after all these years where you were just a kid who is passionate about drums 13 years ago really hits me to the bottom of my heart. RIP both, legendary drummers who were able to touch millions of lives in their short existence.
One thing I loved about joey was how he never went over the top. Some drummers take it too far just for the sake of showing off. Joey kept things just right for the song, everything was in context. Brilliant

Saw him live 3 times with slipknot. One show he played a complete solo with his drum set lifted in the air, inverted, and spinning around. Another show they were playing SIC and his drum kit once again went way up in the air and spun around inverted. Amazing drummer and an amazing person.
Saw them once and his drum solo was unbelievable! I rem him being lifted, if that wasn’t enough inverted then the spinning!! And remember his setup having so many drums….was in awe!!!
More than just drum history, the history of metal, his passion for it and to explore it, the murderdolls was a very fun way to get into metal when they, the more brutal slipknot, his look and style, I think a lot of people would not of discovered metal without him, his mark on the genre is an enormous one.

He's the reason I started drumming and started listening to heavier metal. It was heartbreaking to hear he died on my birthday man... I'll never forget when he threw his drumstick to me in Toronto. I saw Slipknot and Shadows Falls in 2004 or 5. The Subliminal Verses tour, one of the best concert experiences I've ever been too. Had a friend go see them recently and they don't do the spinning drum solos anymore. It will never be the same without Joey.
Mr. Jordison is one of the most recognized drummers ever and somehow still underrated. I can't even fathom writing these songs. It's otherworldly to me.

Pledge Of Allegiance tour back in 2002. Slipknot, Rammstein & System of a Down. 'Knot was touring Iowa & I watched Joey do the aerial spinning drum solo as well. Unforgettable concert. Best I've ever been to
I've always equated Joey to a tattoo artist who actually knows how to use negative space. Knowing when to hold back is an amazing skill many don't learn.

I will never forget at age 8 watching the ‘Left Behind’ music video. It absolutely blew me away and Joey’s drumming immediately drew me in. I got my first drum kit shortly after and found my passion. He truly changed my life as I’m sure he did countless others. One year today and it still doesn’t seem real. Number 1 forever ❤
I will never forget their tour in 2001. I was 16/17 and my sister got me tickets to see them live in Berlin. When the drum kit started rotating, going in the air, flipping 90°, rotating again... all while he was playing and then the lights went out to show the big ass pentagramm. Man this concert was unbelievable!
The groove starting at 3:30 of Disasterpiece is just so great. The song is brutal to that point and then he just flips it with those splash hits and then his so in-the-pocket funky groove. I love it every time!
He deserved infinitely better than what he got in the end; such is the case with most who are excellent yet humble and kind - they are taken advantage of. He was such a rare person, you can’t help but love him and have softness in your heart for him. Rip legend, you are missed and beloved.

Joey Jordison doesn't feel like any other drum virtuoso, he sounds like the drums are just magically doimg that. That's how smooth and yet eclectic his playing is.
I am surprised that you did not talk about his incredible performance with Metallica. I am not fan of Slipknot myself, but that concert with Metallica was one of the best ever. Being in a band and playing most of the songs of another band and live, is a real genius.

JJ was a musician first and a drummer second. If yall want to see the full range of his creative thinking, look up his work on the Roadrunner All Stars record. He was a team captain and his group did four songs. Four incredibly different takes that he masterminded. Incredible stuff, even if a couple of them aren't metal. When I started playing drums I heard Slipknot for the first time and it made me want to play exactly like Joey. He gave me so much inspiration along with Chris from Lamb of God. (Sic) was the song that stuck in my head for years and even till this day. Thats when I knew I was gonna play this style of drums for the rest of my life

God, I LOVE watching Joey's drumcam videos. By far the most intense, creative, f*cking insanely talented and original drummer I've ever listened to. Everything he played amazed me.
For me, Joey will always be remembered for the madness that is the intro to Eyeless. Not the most complicated of his playing but it just hits so hard. Surfacing too. That paradiddle like grove. It's just stuff that great drummers do. I'm not a drummer but he made me like drums. Some bands want to make you air guitar, Joey wanted me to air drum and I'm a guitar player. His playing opened up how I thought about rhythms plus his stuff was just so good.
I have Joey to thank for my career, my passion, and my purpose in life. It was his compositions that made me fall in love with drums and metal music from a very young age. My favorite moment of him will always be him blessing the London crowd with the drum solo performance of a lifetime, spinning around and upside down all to end it with a cymbal catch and a middle finger. R.I.P to the one who started it all. We love and miss you Joey.
I think that video of the Eyeless intro live perfectly sums him up. So fast, so tight, all while having the time of his life and hair whipping so fast it would make even standing difficult, let alone playing the drums.
Joey truly was the reason that the nu metal scene incorporated some death metal drumming and technicality. I don't know which song it was but I think "wait and bleed" was one of the first songs I've heard combined with "left behind". Joey truly was a drummer that kept pushing forward and was looking for the extreme in every corner of the history of drums. He loved bands like satyricon, deicide and some grindcore stuff and you can really hear how he worshipped this kind of music. He understood music as an all in all package and really wrote songs within songs on his drum kit. It inspired me to strife towards this extremity in music and pushed my imagination to the limit of what a drummer can actually create. Rip you legend
Slipknot, as they got older leaned more and more towards Thrash & Death Metal. Not a Thrash or Death Metal Band as such, but my God they really do have A LOT of both Thrash & Death Metal in there, undeniably; harmonised tremolo riffs with blast beats/long double kick runs, multiple vocals ( high and low) & with sweep picked shred solos is pretty Death Metal if ya ask me.
Youre never going to read this, but hearing about the moments you met Joey was great. Thank you for this. I saw 2 concerts by slipknot in Brazil with Joey. I cherish these moments. Again, thank you.
Watching Joey play Disasterpiece was THE reason I picked up the sticks. Eyeless, Liberate and Eeyore were my favourite songs to play on the drums. Not only a lot of technicality, but a huge amount of emotion to be felt when playing. I was gutted when he was fired from Slipknot, I never listened to any of their new stuff after that. His passing genuinely hurt, such a huge inspiration taken way too young.
It’s incredible how slipknot make feel like I am “home” - they give me what I need force, expression, deep feelings, relaxation, calmness, petting - I love every part of those dudes

I loved all the songs that had Joey Jordison in it because man, I was always rocking out and jamming in my room, and now with him gone it has been one of those moments where I can enjoy his time with all of the bands that he played in until his final moments and just like that they took him away from us fans 😢😢 which left me heartbroken to say the least. One of, if not THE most influential drummers in heavy music. The loss of Joey felt like such a monumental loss of my childhood and it was a massive blow. Slipknot died with Paul and the final nail in the coffin was them firing Joey. RIP to one of the greatest drummers of all time.
Still to this day I think that Joey’s insane drumming professionalism is greatly and best represented in the Roadrunner United All Stars session album that came out in 2005. “Annihilation by the hands of god” and “Constitution down” - is a drumming masterpieces. I loved this video style. A real professional metal drummer going over another drummer's talents and abilities. Letting us listen to the original and then showing us what he's doing with nice clean camera angles. It's a really cool way to showcase some of our favourite drummers and why we love them so much. This was a really cool video.
My favorite slipknot song is “The Shape”, for multiple reasons. On top of being the heaviest/most underrated song they’ve made (in my opinion), I feel it showcases Joey’s creativity. The verses, for the most part, are just ambient noise with a two note base line. Joey follows the bass with his foot while playing a thrash beat over it, but somehow makes it groovy. The chorus to me is really where he shines creatively. It’s a tremolo riff, and I feel if that riff was given to any other metal drummer, they probably would have either put a blast beat over it, or just laid some heavy double bass over it, but Joey grooved that tremolo, and it was the first time I’d heard something like that. He took a song that if played by anyone else, would have been noise and double bass, but he took that song and made it groove, all while keeping a heavy feel. That song, to me, is the true genius of Joey Jordison! Rest in Power, Joey!!
he's definitely studied a lot of jazz in his life, because I remember listening to a demo before Corey came in and there were one or two songs that he'd put jazz in the middle of out of nowhere and matched it up a lot. He certainly cared about doing what the other drummers weren't doing and loved the instrument.

I was never a Slipknot fan, but I saw them at a Japanese festival about 20 years ago and was blown away by how hard they worked up there to put on an incredible show, and they obviously loved their Japanese fans. It's not my genre of music, but I became a fan of the people in the band for sure.

Vendetta is definitely one of my favorite tracks that Joey created. I’ve tried and tried again to play that song, but I just don’t have the speed and stamina for it. I remember being a little kid and my dad used to have four 16” subs in the trunk of a ‘96 Dodge Neon. I remember “Me Inside” playing in that car and the double bass made the seat feel like a massage chair.

This was my exact experience watching Disasterpieces for the first time. I actually bought that DVD before I had ever listened to either Iowa or the band's debut album and was absolutely blown away by Joey. I couldn't believe that he could play with such vitality, precision, and technical mastery song after song after song. There's a moment during "Liberate" where he tosses his stick up in the air just as Corey says, "I can't see from here, but I can smell your fear" and catches it before slamming into the next groove that I must have rewound and watched 100,000 times. Words like "legend" are reserved for people like Joey.

As a teenager, I couldn't work out why Joey always sounded different to me than a lot of other drummers. I think it's because he had a musicality to his playing that you don't often see.

What I admired the most about Joey is the fact that he stayed humble. He stayed looking out for other bands on a big and small scale. Dude had so much knowledge and passionate for music. Quiet spirit with such a bright light…excuse me…😭🤧❤️

Joey and The Rev are what got me into taking drums more seriously when I was a teenager and it's such a bummer to realize that the guys you looked up to musically and helped you discover a life-long love are both gone

13 years ago I was shocked with Rev. If I'm still drumming to this day, it is because of him. And Joey passing away shocked me again after all these years. Those are the best drummers. The ones who serve the song. Its not metal but Jeff Porcaro was the best at that imo. I bet theres at least one iconic drum beat he recorded that you would know. Wasn’t flashy at all but the guy had a pocket like nobody’s business. I’m pretty sure he recorded 200 songs for different bands or something like that. He was that in demand. And not just small time label stuff. Like most songs were on the Billboard 200
Saw him live 3 times with slipknot. One show he played a complete solo with his drum set lifted in the air, inverted, and spinning around. Another show they were playing SIC and his drum kit once again went way up in the air and spun around inverted. Amazing drummer and an amazing person.
Saw them once and his drum solo was unbelievable! I rem him being lifted, if that wasn’t enough inverted then the spinning!! And remember his setup having so many drums….was in awe!!!

More than just drum history, the history of metal, his passion for it and to explore it, the murderdolls was a very fun way to get into metal when they, the more brutal slipknot, his look and style, I think a lot of people would not of discovered metal without him, his mark on the genre is an enormous one.

He's the reason I started drumming and started listening to heavier metal. It was heartbreaking to hear he died on my birthday man... I'll never forget when he threw his drumstick to me in Toronto. I saw Slipknot and Shadows Falls in 2004 or 5. The Subliminal Verses tour, one of the best concert experiences I've ever been too. Had a friend go see them recently and they don't do the spinning drum solos anymore. It will never be the same without Joey.

I'll never forget watching him spin in the air drumming like a madman live. Truly one of a kind. I feel lucky to have grown up in the era I did. I got to see him and slip 6x in my life.
Pledge Of Allegiance tour back in 2002. Slipknot, Rammstein & System of a Down. 'Knot was touring Iowa & I watched Joey do the aerial spinning drum solo as well. Unforgettable concert. Best I've ever been to

I will never forget at age 8 watching the ‘Left Behind’ music video.
It absolutely blew me away and Joey’s drumming immediately drew me in.
I got my first drum kit shortly after and found my passion. He truly changed my life as I’m sure he did countless others.
One year today and it still doesn’t seem real.

I will never forget their tour in 2001. I was 16/17 and my sister got me tickets to see them live in Berlin. When the drum kit started rotating, going in the air, flipping 90°, rotating again... all while he was playing and then the lights went out to show the big ass pentagramm. Man this concert was unbelievable!

The groove starting at 3:30 of Disasterpiece is just so great. The song is brutal to that point and then he just flips it with those splash hits and then his so in-the-pocket funky groove. I love it every time!
He deserved infinitely better than what he got in the end; such is the case with most who are excellent yet humble and kind - they are taken advantage of. He was such a rare person, you can’t help but love him and have softness in your heart for him. Rip legend, you are missed and beloved.

I am surprised that you did not talk about his incredible performance with Metallica. I am not fan of Slipknot myself, but that concert with Metallica was one of the best ever. Being in a band and playing most of the songs of another band and live, is a real genius.
Not to mention they played more songs then he practiced for with them in that set time.

JJ was a musician first and a drummer second. If yall want to see the full range of his creative thinking, look up his work on the Roadrunner All Stars record. He was a team captain and his group did four songs. Four incredibly different takes that he masterminded. Incredible stuff, even if a couple of them aren't metal.

When I started playing drums I heard Slipknot for the first time and it made me want to play exactly like Joey. He gave me so much inspiration along with Chris from Lamb of God. (Sic) was the song that stuck in my head for years and even till this day. Thats when I knew I was gonna play this style of drums for the rest of my life

For me, Joey will always be remembered for the madness that is the intro to Eyeless. Not the most complicated of his playing but it just hits so hard.
Surfacing too. That paradiddle like grove. It's just stuff that great drummers do. I'm not a drummer but he made me like drums. Some bands want to make you air guitar, Joey wanted me to air drum and I'm a guitar player. His playing opened up how I thought about rhythms plus his stuff was just so good.
I have Joey to thank for my career, my passion, and my purpose in life. It was his compositions that made me fall in love with drums and metal music from a very young age. My favorite moment of him will always be him blessing the London crowd with the drum solo performance of a lifetime, spinning around and upside down all to end it with a cymbal catch and a middle finger. R.I.P to the one who started it all. We love and miss you Joey.
I think that video of the Eyeless intro live perfectly sums him up. So fast, so tight, all while having the time of his life and hair whipping so fast it would make even standing difficult, let alone playing the drums.

Joey truly was the reason that the nu metal scene incorporated some death metal drumming and technicality. I don't know which song it was but I think "wait and bleed" was one of the first songs I've heard combined with "left behind". Joey truly was a drummer that kept pushing forward and was looking for the extreme in every corner of the history of drums. He loved bands like satyricon, deicide and some grindcore stuff and you can really hear how he worshipped this kind of music. He understood music as an all in all package and really wrote songs within songs on his drum kit. It inspired me to strife towards this extremity in music and pushed my imagination to the limit of what a drummer can actually create.

Slipknot, as they got older leaned more and more towards Thrash & Death Metal. Not a Thrash or Death Metal Band as such, but my God they really do have A LOT of both Thrash & Death Metal in there, undeniably; harmonised tremolo riffs with blast beats/long double kick runs, multiple vocals ( high and low) & with sweep picked shred solos is pretty Death Metal if ya ask me.
Youre never going to read this, but hearing about the moments you met Joey was great. Thank you for this. I saw 2 concerts by slipknot in Brazil with Joey. I cherish these moments. Again, thank you.
Watching Joey play Disasterpiece was THE reason I picked up the sticks. Eyeless, Liberate and Eeyore were my favourite songs to play on the drums. Not only a lot of technicality, but a huge amount of emotion to be felt when playing. I was gutted when he was fired from Slipknot, I never listened to any of their new stuff after that. His passing genuinely hurt, such a huge inspiration taken way too young.

I loved all the songs that had Joey Jordison in it because man, I was always rocking out and jamming in my room, and now with him gone it has been one of those moments where I can enjoy his time with all of the bands that he played in until his final moments and just like that they took him away from us fans 😢😢 which left me heartbroken to say the least. Best drummer to ever grace a drum set period. Not to say there isn’t other talented drummers today and in the past cause there most definitely is but Joey just hits different in every way possible behind the kit. Dude was a legend and inspired myself and so many others. He and Paul was slipknot.

One of, if not THE most influential drummers in heavy music. The loss of Joey felt like such a monumental loss of my childhood and it was a massive blow. Slipknot died with Paul and the final nail in the coffin was them firing Joey. RIP to one of the greatest drummers of all time.
I watched his last slipknot tour in Sydney 10 years ago, not because of slipknot, but because of Joey.

Still to this day I think that Joey’s insane drumming professionalism is greatly and best represented in the Roadrunner United All Stars session album that came out in 2005. “Annihilation by the hands of god” and “Constitution down” - is a drumming masterpieces. He was so good in his craft.

I loved this video style. A real professional metal drummer going over another drummer's talents and abilities. Letting us listen to the original and then showing us what he's doing with nice clean camera angles. It's a really cool way to showcase some of our favourite drummers and why we love them so much.

My favorite slipknot song is “The Shape”, for multiple reasons.
On top of being the heaviest/most underrated song they’ve made (in my opinion), I feel it showcases Joey’s creativity. The verses, for the most part, are just ambient noise with a two note base line. Joey follows the bass with his foot while playing a thrash beat over it, but somehow makes it groovy. The chorus to me is really where he shines creatively. It’s a tremolo riff, and I feel if that riff was given to any other metal drummer, they probably would have either put a blast beat over it, or just laid some heavy double bass over it, but Joey grooved that tremolo, and it was the first time I’d heard something like that.
He took a song that if played by anyone else, would have been noise and double bass, but he took that song and made it groove, all while keeping a heavy feel. That song, to me, is the true genius of Joey Jordison!

the main part of the shapes chorus are the vocals and joey complements them by following some parts of it and that makes the song really powerful
he's definitely studied a lot of jazz in his life, because I remember listening to a demo before Corey came in and there were one or two songs that he'd put jazz in the middle of out of nowhere and matched it up a lot. He certainly cared about doing what the other drummers weren't doing and loved the instrument.

I was never a Slipknot fan, but I saw them at a Japanese festival about 20 years ago and was blown away by how hard they worked up there to put on an incredible show, and they obviously loved their Japanese fans. It's not my genre of music, but I became a fan of the people in the band for sure.
My favorite moment of Joey is when he is behind his drums, from the Start to the End.

Vendetta is definitely one of my favorite tracks that Joey created. I’ve tried and tried again to play that song, but I just don’t have the speed and stamina for it.
I remember being a little kid and my dad used to have four 16” subs in the trunk of a ‘96 Dodge Neon. I remember “Me Inside” playing in that car and the double bass made the seat feel like a massage chair.
