Could you please do a video on how you manage your hair when working out? I sweat a lot and this has been the most challenging issue with regards to caring for my hair nowadays.
I had to stop finger detangling a while ago... I just didn't feel like my hair was ever completely untangled...so I got a HUGE shower comb and only use that. I only come my hair once a week anyway when I deep condition so I don't think it's bad at all... The water and conditioner really helps alot too!!! And my hair is still getting longer..no breakage!!! It's all good!!😊✌
Lol @ 'I've managed to not accidentally lock my hair' :D I completely agree with this philosophy. Why keep subjecting your hair to such harsh manipulation? Some people's detangling videos give me chills.
Really though! I do cringe, watching some people beat their strands into submission with combs and brushes. I'm okay with letting the comb sniff out the tangles for me, and then letting my fingers take it from there, haha.
Omg! My roots are my most tangled area too! I've never stopped using a comb tho.I use it the same as you do. And I hope by now most 4c naturals understand that getting a comb to glide through there hair constantly is impossible. I love my kinks and curls. I've long been over expecting my natural hair to perform like relaxed or processed hair ( slick edges and buns, comb gliding, and the like) I mentally threw all that out the window when I went natural.
I love that you made this video. I'm finding from you and other 4cers that you don't necessarily need to have a wide tooth comb run completely through your hair. I'll give this a try. You're the best girl!
I've never been able to just finger detangle, my fingers actually seem to rip out more hair than my wide tooth comb, plus I only detangle with running water and tons of conditioner. I can only comb from root to tip as well. That's just what has worked for my hair the best. The biggest thing for me is to wash frequently (2-3x a week) enough so I don't get too many tangles, deep conditioning overnight, and I actually tangle less if I don't tie up my hair at night.
Funny that...after seeing how well your hair has done over the years I have come to conclusion that I should toss away my combs and finger detangle exclusively. My hair is not as long but my breakage and shedding has sabotaged my hair growth for 7 years now and it's time to do something new and drastic. My hair is thin and fine and tangles way too easily so I definitely need to be more careful with it.
I almost exclusively wear wash n go styling in my hair, and have found that the combination of finger/comb detangling has been the best way to be sure to have a successful wng and avoid most ssk's. I do this in the shower and the process is pretty quick. Since I restyle in the shower twice a wk my wng's usually only take about 10-15 min to do and I'm in and out of the shower in no more that 25min. Never gave the process a name but I like your choice. :)
This is cool! I do something like this occasionally but I think I'm ready to eliminate "comb guilt" and go ahead and use it. Mine is very similar btw. It's a Hercules Sagemann
LOVE this! I'm 100% for adapting techniques to cut down on time and improve our relationship with our hair. It's not supposed to be a burden or chore! Love that you found a way to improve your wash day experience that also supports your hair maintenance goals! Wonderful vid as always, chica!!
I feel good that you posted this video! I've been hybrid detangling for a few months now and it's nice to see the method of how other people do it. I'm all for trying new methods to come across the most streamlined efficient way to get it done. I always use the shower comb with the hooked handle but I've seen you and one other youtuber use a comb like the one you have in the video and I've never tried it. I really should. Thanks for the upload and honesty with your viewers as I've seen some youtubers allow their watchers to continue believing that they still do something that they no longer do.
Thanks for the video! I've talked to so many people who say I have tangles because I don't deep condition, but I do. I just have tangly hair. Glad I'm not the only one!
Great video! I have to say that while I am still primarily a finger detangler, the Hercules Seamless is the only comb that will ever touch my hair. All wide tooth combs are NOT created equal. I love your technique and how well you explain it. Thank you for sharing! 😀
You and I have almost the exact same hair...mine is just not as long because in all honesty, I am not as gentle with mine. I just started finger detangling my hair, usually as a first round of detangling. Then I go back and use the comb or my modified Denman brush. My goal this Spring is to go back to taking care of my hair like I did when it was shorter. I stopped wrapping it at night, stopped midweek moisturizing it - I've been suchasbad hair mommy.
Ah, yes, I find that being gentle is the one thing that I do my best not to skip/alter in my routine. And, there have been days where I take my frustrations out on my hair! Don't stress too much about not looking after your hair as much as you used to do. You can always trim off any tattered ends and bounce back, when you're ready.
thank you for this video! at first i felt like i'd failed because strict finger detangling was so taking so long and becoming pretty annoying. i notice some of my fav youtubers are using combs again! YAY! i use the exact same technique for detangling in the shower - using the wide tooth comb more like a pick. works great and keeps the shed hair out of the drain.
Yes! The comb helps me find the tangles much faster than fingers alone, and then my fingers do the real work of actually removing the tangles. It's working very well so far, and I'm loving my quicker detangling sessions!
Very similar to what I'm doing! The comb helps me find the tangles so much faster, and then I can actually do the detangling work with my fingers + shower head pretty swiftly. So far, so good!
As a tight, course, thick 4a/4c mixture, I never jumped on the finger-detangling-only bad wagon. I would only do it after taking down a protective style like box braids. I was on Amazon and saw the thick and curly Tangle Teezer 👀... I never really put down a comb but I did put down brushes and brush-like tools but I loooooooove my tangle teezer! I couldn't believe how fast and effective it was! I still am stumped about it!
I started using a Felicia leatherwood knockoff brush last year because I was so tired of finger detangling and I found I got less shed hair and since then I just co-wash twice a week but I contribute my fast detangling to a combination of the brush and conditioner that my hair loves and is silicone free lol and the entire section was detangled from root to ends and my roots are theeee worse
That's exactly how I've been doing it. If you use a comb or brush while finger detangling, it can help you find the tangles you may have missed and it helps get the shed hair out so much better. It also helps with the tangles at the roots.
U look beautiful as always ❤️❤️🤗thank you for sharing ❤️❤️❤️😊I always mix paddle brush with my fingers as well❤️❤️it is easier than only fingers detangles ❤️
Hypothetical me, on a hypothetical date, receiving a hypothetical notification about a hypothetical new video from Nappyheadedjojoba entitled "I'm taking a shit, y'all" = date paused, data limits stretched to the max and me ordering more wine and watching it immediately.Things that could happen in 2018. Love you.
You've coined a new natural hair technique- The Hybrid Method lol. I've been wanting to incorporate a comb into my detangling routine but I don't trust myself yet. I'll try one section only next wash day and build up to doing this method on my entire head. Thx for the idea.
👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👍🏿 We must be on the same page with this one because now as May 21, will make my two year mark since I shaved my head bald, I now have hair down midway of my back at my nape, collar bone back center also at the sides , and my slowest problematic top bang portion reaches just beneath my nose, but it's my thinnest, most fragile. But yeah, I just started gently using my wife tooth after careful and thorough finger detangling. My texture is a mixture of "type threes" and my curls/waves are S shaped and sometimes coily. Plus my textures are fine and thin to medium and slightly course in places. But any afro textured hair benefits from gentle, very careful combing as you described also demo'd. I like that wig. I think I'll get it, just in that other color you wore at first. I see you're having fun with them and since, by sight, I trust your judgment I'm going to get it. Good thing is that returns to Amazon are easy. Sometimes the seller will even let you keep items that you weren't completely happy with. Thanks doll.
I hope you like it! It's one of my all-time favorite hair hats. One of the first I felt I could actually wear in public, after first deciding to give wigs a try, a couple of years ago. I have repurchased and will do so again!
Yeah, after admiring hair hat divas like yourself, I have, since about this past February, been experimenting with hair hats. And, to my surprise, I’m digging it. Thankfully Amazon.com makes it easy to return the ones that don’t quite work out for me. I’ve even got to keep one that I didn’t like from a gracious and generous seller. All they required was a five star rating. Cool. Right? You always manage to inspire me. Thanks!
I actually discovered your channel while looking for a fitness related topic, but was pleasantly surprised to see that you’re a natural lady. I’m interested in using wigs to leave my hair alone and retain length. This may be a dumb question, but do you workout in wigs? I have in the past and I’ve found it to be uncomfortable. But I don’t know about wearing my struggle braids/cornrows in the gym. How do you approach this?
I DO NOT work out in wigs. The very idea seems absolutely dreadful. I rock my struggle braids/twists in the gym, haha. They're always in a bun or ponytail, because I don't want anything in my face.
I started using a comb on the first wash of each month (I wash weekly) this year.. As my hair is approaching BSL, I felt that finger detangling isn’t working as well anymore.
Hi...love your videos...just had my big sis watch (she was very impressed)...just wondering if your have any suggestions for a 9 year old (her granddaughter)with extremely coily hair that is pretty soft...most of her breakage is by the nape of her neck and her edges
Confession: As of last month I started using a boar bristle brush (bunning my hair as a protective style). Once I have reached my ends I detangle with a Denmen brush to prevent breakage.
Ah, it's so funny how different each head of hair is. Pretty much any type of brush is guaranteed to break my hair off. I used to have Denman envy, haha, but now I'm good with my fingers or fingers + a comb-assist routine!
nappyheadedjojoba tell me about envy. I have extremely fine 3C/4A "hair type" I followed your tutorials, however soon realized I was creating my own single strand knots. My hair was like: 😈 oh that's cuuutee. Keep finger detangling my pretty. Let's see if we can get your ends to look like an African broom.
Just so you know, hair can break at any point of the shaft, not just the ends. You could be breaking off hairs at the roots or mid shaft with the boar bristle brush and not even know it.
Beautydivine My biggest concern is splitting my ends and single strands knots. After I detangle my hair I smooth down my curls with a bristle brush with one pass. When I reach my ends I detangle with the Denmen brush with one pass.
Girl, I tried to just finger detangle and keep my hair twisted. moisturized and conditioned under my wig for a month and I ended up with some areas in every section of my head that are locked! Ughhhhh. How do I get them undone? So funny to hear you say you managed "not" to lock your hair. Love your videos. If you have any suggestions on getting my hair unmatted or unlocked would be appreciated.
You are giving me Black Dynasty/Diahann Carroll socialite T's. Love the look. I may give your technique a go. It may be short lived cuz I am strongly considering big chopping again. hahaha. I can't seem to stay away.
Chop away, if that's what makes you feel good! Pursuing length isn't for everyone (and since my chop in January, I'm not so sure it's even for me any more)!
I had to pick up a comb after I had a baby and experienced postpartum shedding. I also use the comb to find tangles. My hair gets so tangled at the roots. 😩
Look when you find something that save more time go for it lol before the diffuser I would just comb out my curls with a be blow-dryer and when you have longer hair it takes so so much time lady lol now that it's cut and short it's easier to deal with but I'm working on growing it back out again.when it comes to taking care of your hair I see it as taking care of another part of your body.your hair is a reflection of how you care for it and if you don't want nappy hair nappy kitchen or whatever than take care of it and I promise you won't lol.sicl of people saying your have to be mixed or something to have nice hair no.just take care of it.straighten them ends get a hot comb on those edges and those naps if you dont want it to look nappy.there is no shame in wanting nice hair for you.i love my natural curls but I won't take care of it the way I do so I just keep it straight because I will take care of that lol.
I bought that exact comb 6 years ago when I first went natural and used it twice and never touch it again. I find with 4C natural hair or Afro types hair a K-Cutter comb (an afro pik type comb) is the best detangling comb for our hair types. It makes detangling very easy and you can start from the roots down despite what the norm said. I've been using it alongside with my fingers and my 4C hair wouldn't have made it to mid back length without it. Hth!
I don't agree that there is a one-size-fits-all for any hair type, but glad you found a tool that works for you. Chicoro is also a fan of the K-cutter, which I remember from her book, and her texture is quite a bit looser than what would be classified as 4C!
nappyheadedjojoba , I agreed that there is no one side fit all in anything. But, although Chicoro hair type is looser than a 4C hair type I bet you that she would still consider her hair to be Afro texture. Anyway, thank you for responding to my comment.
Yes, that was my point: Even though Chicoro's hair is quite a bit looser than how you describe your hair, you're both a fan of the same detangling tool. On the other hand, you our textures are, evidently, far more similar, yet the K-Cutter wasn't great for me. In the end, each head of hair is unique, so texture similarities don't mean that the same techniques, methods, tools, products, etc. will always work across the board!
When you said ...you know to make way for the new tangles that will be forming seconds later... I FELT THAT SHIT!!!!
Amber Jackson On a deep, spiritual level lol the struggle is too real!
Could you please do a video on how you manage your hair when working out? I sweat a lot and this has been the most challenging issue with regards to caring for my hair nowadays.
Yesssss! Lol

Sounds like a good routine!
nappyheadedjojoba Thank you!!! That means ALOT coming from you!! It's been a long journey...but I'm on my way🙏😊✌
nappyheadedjojoba My hair has grown to armpit length but has thinned out due to hair loss from detangling. Should I big chop?
Lol @ 'I've managed to not accidentally lock my hair' :D I completely agree with this philosophy. Why keep subjecting your hair to such harsh manipulation? Some people's detangling videos give me chills.
Really though! I do cringe, watching some people beat their strands into submission with combs and brushes. I'm okay with letting the comb sniff out the tangles for me, and then letting my fingers take it from there, haha.
When I hear the hair snap, crackle and popping I’m like 😬🙉
I loved that this was released as I woke up looking like a matted puppy wondering what I was going to do.
Omg! My roots are my most tangled area too! I've never stopped using a comb tho.I use it the same as you do. Yooo I laughed so loud when you said I almost combed the wig right off of my head 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Totally unrelated but I need your accessories. Always on point. You could easily be a jewellery designer 😙

That hair +makeup= gorgeous!

Sis finger detangling ruined my hair. When i thought it was done it really wasn't. I gotta go back to the comb for safe keeping 😑😊
Wow ! I just did this last night. It really help locate those trapped hairs and tangles. Great video
thank you for this video! at first i felt like i'd failed because strict finger detangling was so taking so long and becoming pretty annoying. i notice some of my fav youtubers are using combs again! Thank you for always putting the information in the box. You are the real MVP.
I thought I was the only one that had really bad tangles at the roots of my hair
Oh, no, girl. The roots are the WORST for me.
I’ve been using a comb to help with my roots only (finger detangling the rest) and loving it! Definitely going to try this method!!
Very similar to what I'm doing! The comb helps me find the tangles so much faster, and then I can actually do the detangling work with my fingers + shower head pretty swiftly. So far, so good!
Come on PURPLE!
I like the name of it. Hybrid detangling.

It looks like a Magic Star Jumbo Rake by Hercules Sagemann. It's a comb I've actually wanted for years and just never got around to getting it.
sweetnyouniq yes, that looks like it. Love this comb!
Your hair is soooo beautiful!!!! If it’s a wig, it’s stunning
Terilaine Davis issa wig. Her natural hair is beautiful and waist length.
I feel like my hairball of shed hair has gotten smaller too, with this routine. It's been very surprising!
Briana Atkins I found a Leatherwood knock off brush and I love it.
Briana Atkins Which conditioner do u use? And what is ur method fot detangling? What is the brand of the knock off?
That's exactly how I've been doing it. If you use a comb or brush while finger detangling, it can help you find the tangles you may have missed and it helps get the shed hair out so much better. It also helps with the tangles at the roots.
Exactly!
Love, love, love your hair! Thank you for your videos, you've changed my experience of having very-wavy hair.
Girl, that comb is my jam!!! My routine is very similar to yours.
U look beautiful as always ❤️❤️🤗thank you for sharing ❤️❤️❤️😊I always mix paddle brush with my fingers as well❤️❤️it is easier than only fingers detangles ❤️
Sameera salah which kind of paddle brush do u use?
Hypothetical me, on a hypothetical date, receiving a hypothetical notification about a hypothetical new video from Nappyheadedjojoba entitled "I'm taking a shit, y'all" = date paused, data limits stretched to the max and me ordering more wine and watching it immediately.Things that could happen in 2018. Love you.
Well, I can promise you that I will not be uploading any videos about my bowels, so I think your hypothetical date and data plan are safe.
I still finger detangle but I did buy a detangling brush and I love it for when I need the assist lol.
the rat tail comb in this brand of combs is a dream, and they don't break either

Give it a try! Try to let the comb find the tangles, and then let your fingers remove them. It's working very well for me!
It’s not a new idea🤷🏼♀️ I’ve been doing this method the moment I went natural 3yrs ago
I automatically knewwwww it was the magic star I have one it’s the best comb ever
Girl how you stop finder detangling and I started, lol!! But I still detangle with a comb too. It is a good combo

I have that seamless comb lol

Ughhhhh. How do I get them undone? So funny to hear you say you managed "not" to lock your hair. Love your videos. If you have any suggestions on getting my hair unmatted or unlocked would be appreciated.
I have a video on how I finger detangle severely matted hair. Check my channel, and good luck!
I don't want to be misunderstood, I only have love for you Ti!
Finger+ detangling tool is my go to. I tried exclusively finger detangling and I had the worst knots.😩
Looking Beautiful Sis! 👍❤
I LOVE YOUR LOOK IN THIS VIDEO!!!!! YES IM YELLING!! LOL
I had to pick up a comb after I had a baby and experienced postpartum shedding. I also use the comb to find tangles. My hair gets so tangled at the roots. 😩
Great routine!
Love the purple.

I love the idea of “hair hat”
I love love love your wigs😍.
1:34 ain't even have to watch the vid...gets thumbs up just for that. 🤣🤣🤣
How much quicker is this than your old detangling method?
May I as what those devices were on the ends of your twists in the shower? Sorry if I missed it.
I gotta embrace that “de tangled enough” that would be very helpful
How often should a person wash natural hair a week, couple days. How often?
sometimes i need a comb, sometimes i need my fingers. do what your hair is telling you it needs.
What about the Demi brush. Is it good for natural hair.
What is the things at the end of your twists?

I'm saying the same thing to myself, haha. I can't believe it, either!
Heyyyyyyy T!

Welcome to the fam!
whaaaaaaat? not mad at ya.
Bahahaha! I almost just combed my wig off my head lolz
Lol. Dang.
I love your videos. #rideordie
