I’ve never been very good at anything except running and archery. Archery has helped my ADHD and made me much stronger than I should be today. I have been shooting longbows since 11 years old and thanks to you Armin I am shooting both Eastern and Western styles. Archery is my addiction, and I see archery as a positive addiction, rather than alcohol or drugs. I 100% agree with everything said in this video. Thank you so much Armin!

What an awesome video. I love it.
I agree on hunting. If you don't understand why killing something for pleasure is wrong, you failed as a human being. And if you need to do it to feel manly, you are no man at all.
For me, archery was something I always wanted to try. Having done it for a bit over a year now I can say it's good exercise and awesome way to mindfully meditate. But as someone who never truly mastered any one thing in life, this is something I have the will to do.
And also, let's not forget how fun it is 😁

😀Why Archery? Only few know but I did not like archery because I found it boring. My dad was Archer, he used bamboo from his town to make his bows and he tried to introduce me to the discipline but I only liked fast car races. Well, when my dad dies, it gives me a concern to practice and because I did not have the resources or the instructor, my first archery channel that I visited to understand body mechanics was Malta Archery and the second video I saw was a review of Ming Moon 6 and I said to myself I want to learn how to shoot like that gentleman of the Archery. Well look for other videos I met Nick the Backyardbowyer and I learned to make my first PVC bow and studying Armin's videos every night started my way through this life. Personally, it helped me control my daily stress and cardiac hypertension. My only regret was creating a youtube channel to keep my family and friends happy with my progress. Well it brought me many haters but I keep it open for my son and family and friends who support me to continue. Archery is life. Thank you Armin Hirmer for your great friendship here on the island of Puerto Rico. You have a faithful brother and my family thanks you for your friendship.😀👍

Nice! You win best comments award! 😁
      Add a few more:
      6) It doesn't go BANG BANG, so no Karens calling cops & sending them to your home.
      7) On a per-shot basis, costs way less than BANG BANG BANG (easily $0.50 per shot)
      8) Better penetration power than BANG, but won't over-penetrate thanks to the drag from the rest of arrow shaft itself.

I suppose that depends where you're at and what's available to you.
With your comments, I suppose you're in some urban apartment complex, no private backyard.
Several ways I can think of, from easiest first:
      - Call your local Cabela's / Bass Pro / etc. (any store that has an archery equipment section), and ask them where you can find a local archery range.
      - Call your city park management, and see if they already maintain an archery range. (My city has this; public archery range, maintained by the park district. No range officer, no supervision, no range fees.)
      - Drive 30~60min until you're "out of the city" in some woods/etc to setup your foam target & backstop.
      - If you're REALLY STUCK in some urban area e.g. Los Angeles, then you do have the choice of run-down / abandoned buildings.
      - Even if within city, look for: under highway over-pass. Under bridges. At river banks. Just outside the perimeter for the city's sewer treatment facility (you might want to stay upwind), or garbage dump, etc. Basically places where there wouldn't be a lot of people or vehicle traffic going through.
      - Some city parks have these baseball fields for in-city leagues/teams. If the dugout has cement/brick wall, that would be an excellent backstop; just make sure you stay outside of their practice hours. (Still bring your own backstop, so you're never shooting your arrows into somebody else's wall; don't give ppl an excuse saying you damaged property.)
      - Some public schools have gyms, football fields, etc., built some distance away from the academic building. On Sat/Sun when that's not in-use and there's nobody, that's another possibility. Provided that's not in-view from public places, then the chance of a Karen calling cops on you is reduced.
If you go anywhere that isn't an archery range with its existing foam targets/walls, then you'll need to think about:
      1) Your own foam target.
      2) Possibly a back-stop; in case your arrow miss the target entirely.
For this purpose, you can use a 4' x 8' OSB board. Such can be bought at local hardware store for under $40.
Use whatever DIY technique to make it more portable, including cutting in half.
      3) High-vis traffic cones? This is *for show* - making your temporary "range" look like you've applied an over-abundance of caution, etc. So even if folks see you doing that, hopefully they leave you alone thinking you know your safety, rather than calling the cops.

A barrel without a bottom as you say Armin. For me, archery combines physicality, mindfulness, inner peace- oh and then excitement and fun. AND there is all of the peripheral stuff, making arrows, making strings, making leather work, being in the woods with friends with coffee brewing and a smoke- So it has it all.

What I haven't shot is these Arab type recurves using a thumb release and I really enjoy these reviews you are doing. I'm still shooting 60# and under bows. I'm retired so money is a problem for me but I hope to be able soon to purchase one of these bows just for the joy of shooting it. I may hunt with one too because of their compact nature. Thank you for introducing me to these bows.

Well to be accurate, Arab style bow has pretty much disappeared to history. No one today really knows what they looked like, there is no surviving bows and no accurate art work on them. We only know thet they used 3 different types of bows, one self bow, other horn-wood-sinew composite bow and third is either sinew backed wood bow or laminated from 2 woods (even that is uncertain, cus different sources give different info witch one it is), but there is no accurate description on any of those.
On this channel, there is Chinese, Mongolian, Turkish, Korean, Hungarian, Tatar and many others, but no Arab style bows, because of the reason I just explained.

I shoot all types of traditional bows, the English longbow, Mongolian bows, korean bows and many others. I mainly shoot field and roving disciplines.
Why? just for the simple enjoyment of shooting a bow.
Sometimes its frustrating when it doesn't go quite right, but the feeling of that perfect shot is immensely satisfying !!

I started archery ten years ago for hunting. Archery season is much longer than gun where I live. Started with compound which I still shoot. Tried to get into "traditional" archery a couple times but I was never comfortable with a three finger draw. Then I found Armin's channel. Honestly, I didn't know anything about horse bows or thumb draw. So I bought a snake recurve to try it. Now I have a couple proper bows to shoot thumb draw and I've become very accurate. Thanks to Armin! I shoot my bows everyday. It's become a stress reliever. Stay safe everybody!

Why archery? Fun sport hunting. My daughter learnt at 4 years and has a very accurate shot she can hit a bulls eye at 6meters. She wanted to be like her dad. My son started at 5 but was banned until 9 years old he was not a safe shooter. But now is much better and improving rapidly. Still a wild shot though. Me I shoot at 20 meters regular due to space restrictions. Can hit bottle caps at 20 meters targets are getting smaller daily. Don't like compound bow although I own one. There is a much greater challenge to be accurate with my 30 pound Mongolian horse bow. The challenge and the skill are why I shoot bare bow. And love it

The switch from Olympic to traditional is like eye opening experience. I started in a sport club but didn't get the concept of it with the bows and all given that there's martial side of it and kept focusing on traditional bow. Once I tried it it was as though you can finally breathe properly. It's real archery and Olympic one doesn't come close to the feeling and smoothness and the art/skill of it all

Your calm and relaxed demeanor made me feel like archery was less about competition and more about the value it brings to yourself. Archery allows me to feel connected, focused and in the moment. Somewhere on the string and along my riser, I find peace and serenity in myself to challenge myself, to clear my mind enough to perform one precise movement repeatedly. To become one with my bow, my arrows, and the land around me, and not allow thoughts that may worry me, it solidifies that meditation and a clear mind produces happiness. Archery is my quiet place that requires that of me which I require of it: patience and practice. I shoot to produce happiness and one-ness with myself and how I relate to the world both as a target archer and hunter.

@Armin Hirmer. Your video on the mental transformation via archery was most helpful. I am now finding archery as a way to bring me back to center, to clear my mind after a stressful week of work and chores. I took your advice on getting a lighter draw bow to get my form down. It is a 20 pound Mongolian bow that I call Chinggis Khan. When I get a heavier bow I will give another name depending on Turkish, Persian, Mongol, Hunnish, but I digress.
For the time that I am shooting arrows, I do find a peace and nothing outside of my bow, arrows, and target exists.
    Once again, Wielen dank!!! :):)

I started archery when I was about eleven years old. I read a youth book about a Stone Age hunter ... 😉 My grandfather was in a "Schützenverein" with its own 18,00m hall for archery only. The trainer was a great person and so I stayed with it ... Ten years ore so. I originally wanted something more intuitive, but there was only FITA Olympic here. During my studies I could no longer afford the expensive material and had no time. Then came my studies, family and work ... I am glad that I was inspired by Armin Hirmer to take the simplest bow in my hand and just get started without any constraints like shooting sports. Even if I now mostly only shoot at 5m in the basement, it is a great compensation! For me, archery means: meditation, balance, fun, history, relaxation, reflection and much more. Thanks Armin Hirmer and Malta Archery! And thanks for reading the comments ... it has to be a lot of work!

I was introduced to archery in school. I loved it the first time I held a bow. But it was years before I could really learn. It was something got more of a taste of at a game involving reenacting. But still I had to wait until I could really delve in. Finally, half a lifetime of brushes with archery later, I've gotten proper lessons, and now have a couple bows, one that's quite nice and few cheaper ones.
But why archery? It touched my soul and I find zen in the act of shooting. Perhaps one day I will venture out to hunt, I love venison and deer isn't sold in a shop here, but until then, I simply love the quiet serenity of target practice.

One of the reasons I took up archery was that my dad taught me how to shoot with firearms when I was a kid. However as he got older and his health declined some going out to the range became pretty rare.
So when I was a teenager I more or less made my own bow and arrows from bamboo my ma' grew in the garden, spare rattan, balsa wood, and plenty of ducktape. It wasn't pretty, accurate, nor could it fire an arrow far or fast but it was mine and gave me a way to unwind from school.
I always found target shooting to be meditative in a way. I enjoy seeing how I improve or how I've become lax everytime I shoot. The benefit with bows is I can do this in my backyard without having to worry about alarming the neighborhood and having cops called on me.
Also the practicality of it all. With guns I have to keep spare parts, tools, machinery and loading equipment to be self sufficient. With a bow and arrow their's far less maintenance and ammunition can be made quite easily in bulk if one doesn't mind a loss in quality.
As a note, my dad is now 90 and mostly blind. Years of a hard life and military service finally taking their toll. Even he has pick up the bow in lieu of his old competition USCG Colt to keep his shooting skills sharp. He might not be able to clearly see but if wants to hit his target he will with an arrow or two before winding himself. He even has little competitions with my mom who's starting to learn.

I only get to shoot on occasions, so i only shoot for fun. But it's so much fun, and while i'm not a great shot, because i don't practice nearly enough, hitting the target gives you such a great feeling. And if you actually feel that the shot was good, everything worked well, it's so, so good.

A very Happy, "Hello", from the Entire Jackson family here in Nebraska. Why Archery? Half way into My bow build every one here at home would see me covered in wood dust & glue. They all started helping me out making the first Maple Bow for Our entire family to share, Learn, and test. Been shooting with the Family every other day for the past 2 weeks. Armin's Video's taught all of us here in Papillion Nebraska how to shoot the Bow in a Safe manner. And No! Armin didn't recommend to me how to test the Design limit for Max Draw & weight. I thought that up all by me Lonesome!! hahaha!!! Oh Ya, and Not one drop of blood, No piercing of the Skin, & no fractures except for the wood. I told every one that I have developed a Complex, Technical, & well thought Plan for testing Our First Maple Bow for max draw and draw weight. The test is similar to driving a car in Reverse?. ex) How do you know you backed up as far as you Possibly can in a car?. Just Put the shifter in, "R" for Reverse & back up until, you hear Glass then select "D" for Drive. Not Exactly Rocket Science. Pull on the string until I hear it slight Creek then one Last pul .. . . . Crackle, Crack, Snap, Boom!!!! Good thing I was wearing Welder's Gloves, Ski Mask, could not salvage the underwear. That thing came apart like a hand grenade shooting tooth picks every where. Can't find the small plastic fishing weight scale. I have since decided to improve on my max draw & weight test. This test needs to be a bit more safe. I'm thinking about using our Automatic Garage Door open/close device with the added safety of a remote control, rope, newer metal scale, Duct Tape, & a video Camera. Archery is now Something we do as a Family from Making to shooting. Tomorrow we are all heading over to Home Depot to buy some Bow Wood so everyone can pick out the wood for thier own bows. Great Video's Armin. Later Later, Bob Jackson

Because it clears my mind. On top of that it reminds me a great deal of another sport I love. Disc Golf. Yes... I know. But it's the same internal focus and battle. It is a source projected from the body with different shooting techniques. It is inexpensive, outdoors, for every age. There are targets to hit and you can go competition or solo. Archery for me as a child was always Robin Hood. Today as and adult, it has transcended into something much more than that. Armin helped me 'see' archery as a meditative activity, and splitting arrows is now no longer my main focus. (Just once would be nice though).

Thank You for the exellent videos about archery, especially this one.
Just what i've been searching for,
very good information from a man who obviously has a great level of expertise and passion about this kind of archery.
And also has The ability to teach in a way that makes it easy for People like me to get an understanding of the different ways of shooting styles, and The various types of bows.
I startet off with a high end compound bow just for fun, but did not like it. Too much tech.
After seeing Your tutorial videos, traditional archery will be my starting point, nice and easy.
No clubs where i live, so i Will have to get a bow and arrows off the internet and start off very basic.
Or perhaps make my ovn, 50 years after The last one i made. ;)
Thanks again for nice informative videos.
    Regards, Stan

Why? Family sport. Meditative, good for your mind, calming, satisfying, physically helpful, quieting to the mind, something you can do for life, something you can always get better at and never totally master, something new to do with our horses, diverse groups of people involved in the sport, always something to learn, being amazed at the artists who hand build, create incredibly beautiful and different expressions of their craft, community, sense of accomplishment in the 'all and nothingness' of it. Almost a year late, not sure if you will see this Mr. Hirmer. The reason why I practice archery given I am a few years rusty for lack of a bow sense my last one I had sense I was a kid no longer functions. Is I grew up on it and shooting in general with BB guns and the like. When I was 3-4 my Grandmother used to make me willow self bows from a willow tree in the back yard and with wooden dowels from her workshop arrows and I would spend all day shooting and when I was older I was given a 20lb take down kids bow and when I was not riding my bike or shooting my BB gun and if I had any arrows homemade or bought I would spend the day shooting boxes, and cans. Hopefully soon I can get back into it been looking at a new bow and I want to give Eastern style archery a try and it would defiantly give my something to do as I haven't been able to work for the past 5 years due to a injury and my health but I an still shoot a bow, it would defiantly help my depression and get me outside again.

OK sorry for the long comment but here goes. Being a Muslim.. One of the most encouraged things for us to do as a sport is swimming and archery. The prophet peace be upon him has told us all that the strenght of a human being is in archery. It disciplines a person, reduces his ego (when he cannot be perfect in every shot he takes sometimes he may fail and that reminds him of who he is), increases his strenght as he pulls the weight repeatedly, gives a human being patience which is a virtue, makes him very responsible as protecting a bow is definotely something not easy and requires responsibility, easy thing to do when you want to quit a bad habit, increases your love for history or cultures and to appreciate it. We aren't expecting a war of arrows anytime soon given guns... But if we were to fight one.. We know we are ready. Salam to all my brothers and sisters who shoot and are looking forward to shooting.

When I was a freshman, I really wished I could join my university's archery club. However they did not just accept everyone. They accept those who have learned archery in previous stages of education (i.e. highschool athletes). So, I had to burry my dream. Three years passed and boom! It was Lars Andersen. I watched his video and thought it was really really cool to be able to do something like that. Once again, my dream of becoming an archer risen. However, I realized that I would not be able to afford joining my local archery clubs. I simply did not have the money to do so. Then one of my friends told me that she learnt archery for free. Turned out there are plenty of local communities offering free archery lessons as a part of spreading the Islamic teachings. What amazing is that most of the communities are comprised by the youths! So I went there and tried to shoot for the first time and decided that I liked it. The programme I joined stopped because too many bows got broken and they went into a hiatus until further notice, but it did not stop me from learning. I am too shy to join another community without knowing someone first (I can be very introverted), but archery had caught my heart. So, I bought my first secondhand 20# bow (supposedly a horsebow) and shoot with my best friend at my university's park every weekend (which is halted by the Coronavirus). I learn about the techniques mainly from RUclips; from people like Armin, Justin Ma, Historical Archery, ATARN, Nu Sensei, and many others. I must say that Lars Andersen invited me to archery but people like Armin make me stay. It is good that my religion supports me too! Thanks from Bandung, Indonesia, Armin! ☺️

Why NOT archery? I just started after 10 years of wanting to try. I fired my first 30 arrows yesterday. Hit the target every time from 40 feet aside from one which bounced off the top of the target and lodged itself in my neighbor's mulch...I think. All I saw was a dust cloud.
Looked for an hour and gave up. But it was so much fun! Can't wait until my local archery club opens again so I can get some proper guidance.
I am a black belt in taekwondo and my knees have suffered for it. The whole Zen of this is comparable to a martial arts to me. I look forward to learning and growing more through archery. It is something I carry with me even when I am not shooting, always considering what I can do better.

I've been doing archery for around a month. I can't go out to shoot very often, but I practice in my room for almost every day by drawing the bow and doing reps. At first, my whole body shook while I was drawing the bow (it's about 30 pounds, and I've never really worked out my upper body), skip a month and I now easily draw the same bow to a full 32 inch traditional draw with ease. It's really satisfying seeing myself progress like that. I hope that in a few years I'll be able to draw like a 100 or 120 pound English longbow.
It's also really fun to go out with my friend and just shoot in a random field we found. I was really giddy when two boys approached me, and I even let them try my bow and shoot a few times. If that happened to me as a kid (I grew up with Skyrim, playing archers) I'd have exploded from joy.
And the best part: making a pointy stick go brrrrrr!

Why Archery? It’s been around from around the late Stone Age, reached most cultures and continents, it is also therapeutic to make archery equipment whether the materials are made 100% from nature or from modern materials. And of course it is also great to shoot the bow and arrow whether it’s on your own or at the club, and as Armin would say; “Remember: You only have one arrow to get it right”

My haplogroup (I2a) were trapped in the Baltic with the Jotnar (Neanderthal) during the last Ice Age.
The nocturnal predator both ate and bred with our women.
The children of these liaisons were the Cro-Magnon, aggressive hunters of the Jotnar.
However, any hand-to-hand combat was fatal, as the Jotnar were physically superior. (A 14 year old Jotnar could use an adult Cro-Magnon as a feather duster).
Therefor our ancestors used ambush with bows and arrows.
This is why I do archery.
    It's in the blood.
Side note: The invading steppe people (Jamnier) were terrified of ambush. This is why it was strictly banned. (Ref: Eric the Red and Lief Erikson)
We were the Vannatru and they were the Asiertru. Our goddess is Freya and theirs Odin.
Peace was made when our Freya was married to their Odin.
