You got this for around $3,000!!!??? I need a car 🚗 and was thinking 🤔 of doing an auction. I made my living buying auction cars, tricking them out and reselling them turning 4 to 6 cars a month from 1996 to 2001. An example of my personal car for 15 years: I know what I'm doing as the first auction car was an 1985 Volvo 240 DL wagon in Blue body on Blue interior. Oh all the blue paint was so oxadized the car almost looked white. Within one day after a trip to Pick N Save Auto Salvage I had windows working from new solenoids, I replaced the dash cluster with the old 240 GT Rally group that had Oil Press, H2O Temp, RPM up to 80,000, speedo od 0 to 200KMH, Turbo Boost in bar not just a colored arch, Volt charge and fuel. Bmw tech here, there's updated turbo coolant lines that are braided and the rear suspension is known to have alignment issues and eat rear tires also. Many people buy these N63s at auction in Toronto, bring them for inspection, realize it needs valve seals or timing chains for 10k+ and then just return them to the auction. Great cars when they run right though, good luck Alex!
@@fiily1After 5 years they depreciate to the point where they fall in cheap hands, and those people usually don't do the expensive and very frequent maintenance. That's why most of the euro luxury brands fall apart.
So good to see Sreten be a part of this video his YT channel is top notch content I have watched every project on his channel twice over 😂 If you are into bmws M539 Restorations is the place to be!!!
Sreten is actually Serbian - and you could just translate his name to Happy - look at the smile on that guy despite living in a broken BMW kingdom. love the man and his channel :D
The "bag" in the back seat is for cross-country skis/slalom skis. You put them in from the trunk & the bag prevents melted snow from getting wet inside the car
The tag translates to: PES-Fabric (PUR) The load of the ski bag must not hinder the driver while driving (Section 23 of the StVO). Follow the operating instructions!"
Yep ski bag, my old Audi had the same thing. I actually used it a few times, worked great. I live in New England for context, only an hour-ish away from a few diff mountains
I'm a BMW tech and see these quite frequently, I would recommend you to drop the engine from the bottom and just replace all the plastic bits, valve stem seals if they're leaking and all the gaskets
@@fiily1 Yeah the N63 definitely costed BMW tens of millions of dollars in recalls and replacements. Its cheaper to get a remaned N63 directly from BMW than parts ( I think )
Alex, I hope your thoroughly enjoyed your Italian Vacation. My mother was from Trieste and I spent some time in various Italian cities both as a child and than again as a young adult in the US Navy. Beautiful historic country. As Always, May God Bless you and yours! 😇
Sreten is the man!!! I love m539 restorations! It’s good to see Alex and Sreten on the same video! Hopefully they’ll be a collaboration with you two in the future!!! 💯🫡
Their styles are definitely not compatible. They'd drive each other crazy. One has incredible attention to detail, and one throws things together and hopes for the best.
BMW tech here, few things. First and foremost make sure to register that battery since I’m sure the auction center didn’t. If you don’t it’ll wear out within a few months and you’ll need to put yet another battery in. This car looks to be in good shape but there was definitely a reason it was traded in. I knew someone who owned an X6 exactly like this and he was literally afraid to drive it because something would break almost every time he took it on a drive. The N63 is notoriously one of bmws most unreliable motors with problems like valve stem seals, turbo cooler lines (which was the coolant leak you showed in the video), vanos issues, and timing chain issues. The engine was so bad that bmw even had a class action settlement where certain cars that fall within certain model years would only have to pay $2500 for an entirely new engine at the dealer if the leaks were bad enough. Hopefully this one doesn’t give you any issues but I know they can be real headaches.
Without updating battery information, the computer controlled alternator can definitely charge incorrectly. Charges at a minimum value often. It's not a guarantee it will fail but it might. @@mi16t
@@avioncamper They’ve redeemed themselves considerably since this engine has come out. The B motors are proving to be very reliable even at high mileage. Even the updated version of this motor, the N63TU, fixed a lot of the issues that the non updated engines had
@@mi16t It’s completely dependent on the vehicle. Essentially the vehicle pulls a certain amount of current from a battery depending on its age and voltage. The older the battery is, the more energy it pulls from the battery since older batteries require more current in order to get the same power from them as a new battery. If a car has a new battery but thinks it’s 10 years old it’ll pull too much current and may cause the car to become over voltage and wear the battery out sooner. When you register the battery, the control module is telling the vehicle that it can pull less power from the battery in order to achieve the proper voltage to the vehicle. So in your case it most likely means that your battery wasn’t completely bad so it didn’t need to pull insane amounts of power from it which means your car will more easily adapt to a new battery vs a car like Alex’s. The battery in his car was most likely very dead and probably completely depleted which is why they put a new battery in it, which means it’d be much more important to register the battery in his car vs your car with a battery that most likely wasn’t completely bad yet. I’m not trying to ‘spread lies’, I’m just trying to help.
I think the "cracked engine" was supposed to say "cracked engine cover" and someone forgot to include the word, cover. I think it is just a huge mistake when they wrote it up and Alex gets the benefit. I love it.
Just because "someone" tried to fix this car doesn't mean anything. Alex is on his own level when it comes to fixing engines. Great work Alex, thanks for bringing us along on your adventures.
Super awesome to see you respect the privacy of the previous owners and not show their ultrasound photos. Who know true story behind those photos, so it's refreshing to see you account for their privacy even though the last owners own nothing to you! The auction guys probably took the sunshade for themselves after they slapped a battery in it, surprised they used a OEM battery from 2022, looking forward to this restoration
Try replacing/cleaning the vanos solenoids behind the intercoolers. The lower bolt that fastens the intercooler to the engine is a pain to get to. While you have the intercoolers out, take a dremel to the tab/hole to make it an "open" hole. Then you can pre thread the bolt onto the engine and slip the intercooler onto that bolt. Makes it much easier the next time around. If that's it, $3000 is a steal. Upper oil pan gasket probably should be replaced, but that involves dropping the subframe.
in my experience with BMWs (have 3), change oil at 1/2 the factory rec (7,500 miles). I've done that with my E46 M3 and at 108,000 miles, original rod bearings, original VANOS and Blackstone oil analysis says rod bearings (copper content) is very low.
Direct translation for the bag in the back seat: The load of the ski bag protects the driver and does not hinder the journey. operation manual observe! Load your skis in the back and this will keep the driver safe and wont stop your trip,,But, read the owners manual first...Cool find!
Your Translation is partly correct. It says that as per German Traffic law the loaded Skis should not hinder the Driver in its operability 😁 Though i really enjoyed how he read the Text
I have an N 63TU engine from a 2014 five series BMW and typically stuff that can cause and misfire or limp mode can be clogged PCV valves, variable timing solenoids bad coils, and spark plugs.
That bag at the back for the middle is for your ski's or snowboard after you're done ski'ing/snowboarding on the alps, so when they're wet from all the snow they won't stain your interior.
Not really to protect you from snow but to prevent cold passing through from the back. It works seriously well and prevents windows from fogging up. Without it you pretty much have to blast the defogger full time.
Remember when TRUCKS TV show came on in the 90s with host Stacy David and it just made you feel good. I look fwd to LSC every Saturday! Alex you rock brother!
My 645ci Non turbo , now 20 years old. Found the variable cam servo on one side was bad. Most of the wires going thru to the variable timing and intake butterflies were breaking down and some broken off , never ending codes . Fix was to replace all the wires and the servos , the valley had to come off to sort the dead variable intake , so we replace all the Knock sensors and all the servos etc , just replace it all , 15 k nz and now it’s all brand new under there . Runs like a dream now . Love it when the cams kick in and it a beast
I had a Volvo S60R which was a really fun car but they are notorious for cracking the block between the cylinder walls. Even with the crack they usually still run totally fine, don't throw any codes, and still make boost while consuming a tiny amount of coolant. That's what the beginning of this video makes me think of. I would also love to see you work on and upgrade a Volvo V70 R at some point. Seems right up your alley and you can never have enough fast wagons.
My BIL worked from Switzerland for 6 years and the company car was a diesel x6. Car was the higher powered diesel came with 2 sets of wheels with one set supplied with winter tyres. Absolutely loved it especially when travelling through Germany on the autobahns as the car use to tell him that it was now derestricted and full power was available. He had 2 of them, changed after 3 years. When leaving he was offered the the second car as a bonus but at that stage he had almost 300k kilometres put on it and passed on it.
I used to drive a 2011 BMW 750i with the same engine. It felt like nothing else I have ever driven, but I just couldn’t live with the constant fear that each push of the start button could bankrupt me.
Pull the Vanos solenoid on the bank with fluctuating pressure and clean it with carb cleaner. 90% chance it fixes your problem. Super common with BMWs from this era for the vanos to be clogged when they get run with low oil.
Quote of the year "Guys, something is massaging my butt right now!" 😂😂😂 Yep, I'm on a Legit channel allright 😂 It's the little things that make the difference.
You put your skis through the hole in the back and the bag protects the interior from sharp skis. It even said skis on it. You're more knowledgeable on cars than I will ever be, but this makes me happy that I knew something you didn't 😊
And can we comment on how beautiful that place in Italy looks! Would have loved a VLOG on your second channel or something. Meet some family, hear some Italian, enjoy the sights. You gotta do it next time! ;)
Alex and Sreten! Magic! I started following Alex's channel for his Mercedes V8 content, and Sreten for his BMW V8 content! Great to see you two together!! The two best car content channels on RUclips!! 👍
It's a ski bag, Alex! :) You stick your downhill skis in from the trunk and lay them on the rear-seat center console. These days, when a 6' person skis on 165 cm slalom skis, they will comfortably without messing up the car interior. No need to a roof rack, so you can still show off on the Autobahn on the way back home :)
@@TheBMWlover-311 The X6 was the first coupe SUV. every other brand copied the x6. the new gen is beautiful and these older ones were hated on for no reason. its not like the x5 was particularly pretty back then either

The black bag behind the center of the back seat is a Ski Bag (or ski sack) that you can put your skis in when heading to the ski hills. I had an Audi years ago that had one.
the bag at 29+ min is a ski bag...you put your skis and all the other snow equipment through this bag from behind the rear passenger seats, so it would fit inside the car with a closed trunklid. Typical thing for wagons or suv´s in Germany. On the Label it says: The Load must not impede with the driver while driving. I hope this helps, Greetings from Germany. Love the Content by the way;)
I have done the valve stem seals and timing chain twice on my 2011. Just so you know you can buy a long block at the dealer for about $5k. Do a smoke test and replace the CCV hoses
M539 and LSC are my favorite wrench channels for European cars. I had an E70 diesel and would love to get my hands on an E71 like that, in Space gray or Sterling with a black interior and I'd be all set. Yes, these are really tough to work on and once you pull the engine you are in serious "while you're in there" territory. But these cars were way ahead of their time and once fixed are great to drive.
Alex: "Strapped in? Strapped on? Strapped down?" Me: "Yes." I was pushed back a little by the amount of plastic under the hood of this car - not even my '03 Cruiser had that much. Granted, the engine compartment was smaller, but geez! That's probably an hour's worth of book time just to get to the actual engine. Now, I believe that the engine is cracked, but in a place no one would suspect. Once you wash it down and start it again, it will show you. Good luck!
The stiffening plate is for the front axles, it does help reinforce the front flex, and helps not put too much stress/flex on the front axles for Xdrive. On FCP Euro or even bmw sometimes they are called axle reinforcement plates.
29:33 Those are "ski sacks" for putting skis in the trunk and loading them through the back seat. The fabric bag is to prevent the skis from damaging the interior (and vice versa).
I have a 2012 X6 50ix with the same N63B44O0. Mine skipped timing at about 130k miles (broken chain guides, stretched chain and worn tensioners, you know, N63 stuff). However, I was getting errors on both cam position sensors on the bank. The fact that you are only getting an error on one and it's fluctuating, could mean you're lucky and it's only a cam phaser, or REALLY lucky and it's just a bad sensor. Start simple with the sensor, because it's easy to get to. To do the cam phaser is not an engine out job, so that would still be relatively cheap (but still super labor intensive as you have to take everything off the top and it's all hard to get to...). While you're there, you may as well do the tensioners and re-time, too. If you end up having to do a timing chain and guides, like I did (the chain stretch is pretty gnarly and the guides break into pieces, which you'll find everywhere), it's engine-out and costs $4k in parts (thats even with OEM aftermarket) . You have to take the heads off to get the guides and chains out, which is utterly rediculous (its a full rebuild at that point)... it took forever, but I did it, it runs well and I love it. The luxury features are still relevant, it still gets compliments at 12 years old, and it rips in full dynamic sport traction, in manual shift mode. Never fails to put a smile on my face! You'll just barely break even on the full rebuild, with the current resale, so you gotta really love it to get that deep into it, tho...
Man, you describe my 335D (M57) perfectly. When running right, she's beautiful to drive, and likes to settle in at about 95 mph on our wide open Kansas highways. BTW, what model of Autel scanner are you using? I really like that full screen. I have the MX808. Thanks for the great programming Alex. My wife even watches with me. Have a happy 4th and a great weekend!
I use to have this one, same color, same //M badge at the trunk. There are few videos on my channel. Great to drive, expensive to maintain as engine has many flaws. Would love to se you and Sreten rebuild the engine and fix some flaws the engine has, like thermostat. Looking forward to next episode! 👍👍
Alex. Make sure you check that plastic oil filter housing cap. Mine had a micro crack in it. I was losing oil and couldn't figure out why. Start the motor and lift the car. I had a fine mist coming from that plastic cap.
The black thing is a ski bag so you can load skis into the trunk and stick them through between the seats without getting the seats dirty or wet. StVO is the German Strassenverkehrsordnung (road traffic law) The warning label says that the skis you stick into the back are not allowed to interfere with the driver.
I have to say for some reason the last few videos watching the outtakes gives me a bit more confidence in maybe starting my own channel. Helps me realize it’s not perfect behind the scenes
I'm so sorry for your loss... in advance. My i3 suffered a known design defect in the main EV Drive Motor... due to a bad choice of bearings... which are permanently sealed... in a motor that spins up to 11,000 RPM at its 93mph max speed, and 10,000 RPM at todays highway speeds. They changed the design in 2018 to using tapered roller bearings, but totally disclaim any responsibility for the known defect... well, at least in my case. They did provide free replacement motors to many i3 owners who had this same problem "early on", but by the time I asked for Goodwill Assistance, I was denied... they saw the flood coming, and just closed that chapter. I was told that my car had "too many miles"... at 94k... so apparently their expected lifetime of the car is very close to that mileage... like maybe 100k miles. I was offered $1500 trade-in towards a new BMW... I laughed at them. My i3 (in 2015) had a $50k window sticker price, but I guess that makes it disposable in the eyes of BMW.
The bag between the backrow passenger seats is for placing your ski's with a closed trunk. So they: a) fit in your car. And b) don't leak all over your upholstery when your done ski-ing. The bag is leak-proof(c).
One of the ways to tell the engine was running is the fact that the engine oil level showed. Engine needs to be run before it can give a reading. Still a great purchase.
Alex! It says "SkiSacks" on the bag in the rear console! You slide your skis into the bag from the trunk and you don't slice someone's arm who is sitting in the back seat. They also don't get wet from snowy skis. Sound right?
@LegitStreetCars iv just started watching this episode, i hope its a broken engine that you get to rebuild like the cl 65, you have done it all except bmw v8's. specially this 4.4..this will be an awesome build to restore and upgrade and modify. salute as always.
Your code is coming up for the vanos sensor the exhaust one on the drivers side behind the intercooler and the oil is most likely coming from the oil return from the turbos on the line you gotta remove both turbos to be able to fix it it’s within the hot V section oil leeks there and fills up and flows out the wep hole on the back side of the motor you can stick a camera scope between the turbos and see if it’s wet down there
The turbos cause a good amount of blow by which increases oil use and oil dilution...some engines use a ton of oil from day one... and the BMW oil sensor is notorious for not telling you how low it really is that an extended oil changes you're just looking for engine problems. Not just with BMWs with any of these modern-day engines.
"Die Ladung des Skisacks darf den Fahrer während der Fahrt nicht behindern (§23 der StVO) - Bedienungsanleitung beachten!" The translation from german is: "The cargo in this Ski -Bag must not disturb the driver during driving (§23 of german street-traffic regulations) - For details see the manual!" So this is a device for winter sports. Hallo Alex - Thank You for your great videos! Many greetings from Nuremberg to Chicago!
Too many comments to read! But the turbo return lines leak into the valley & the drain hole is at the rear & looks like a rear main leaking! If pry up a heat shield in the valley, you can fit a 5.5 mm camera in & see the oil pooling in the valley!
Alex you see those worm clamps on the turbo cooling lines? This baby leaks coolant and burns oil. Gonna need valve seals and updated cooling lines, you’re the guy to do it.
Having worked at a Copart yard, I can tell you the folks checking the cars in have little if any technical background. It is very likely the 'crack' did refer to the crack in the engine cover.
That engine is prone for stretched timing chains and it causes rough running before it skips a tooth and totals the engine. I think a new timing chain kit (use genuine parts rather than aftermarket) will fix that misfire.
That sleeve between the back seats is to protect your skis (and any passengers from the sharp ski edges) when you put them in the trunk instead of the roof ski rack.
before doing any work on it at all, i would add SEAFOAM to the oil as an engine flush and run it for about 10 minutes. then i would change the oil and filter. flushing the oil like that might just fix it. I've seen crazier things happen.
I got that same oil warning on the iDrive driving an e90 330. Put in 2 quarts and it was fine. I hate the lack of dipstick because the computer version doesn't register anything until 10-15 minutes after you start the car so who knows how much damage it can do to the engine over time.
Would love to see a video where you worked with srefen, maybe bring him the us to work with you on fixing this or another German car. Together you would make a great team, both of you have good sense of humour.

I was just about to comment this.
Money pits...all euro cars are overcomplicated piles of crap after 5 years.
@@fiily1After 5 years they depreciate to the point where they fall in cheap hands, and those people usually don't do the expensive and very frequent maintenance. That's why most of the euro luxury brands fall apart.
Do you find that the criticisms against BMW are well founded or misplaced hate?
@@fiily1hey hey dont talk about europe cars that way there are many good european cars but bmw is not one of them 😂
So good to see Sreten be a part of this video his YT channel is top notch content I have watched every project on his channel twice over 😂 If you are into bmws M539 Restorations is the place to be!!!
The fact that you called literally my all time favorite bmw fixer just makes this the icing on the cake
That's cute, as these will not make any attempt at getting grip, on even the merest dusting of white, on the flattest of hardtop!
Being American I was thinking golf clubs, but for a German car, skis make so much more sense.
The tag translates to:
PES-Fabric (PUR)
The load of the ski bag must not hinder the driver while driving (Section 23 of the StVO).
Follow the operating instructions!"
It literally said skisack. My 1982 320i had that and I'm amazed that it's not common knowledge.
Drop an engine to replace valve stems and plastics, they obviously don't care about service costs or longevity.
@@fiily1 Yeah the N63 definitely costed BMW tens of millions of dollars in recalls and replacements. Its cheaper to get a remaned N63 directly from BMW than parts ( I think )
@@fiily1 It's a BMW. 😄

His restorations are above and beyond!! Cool as to have him on the channel
Same here.
Mine too!
+1 yes, please!
How could BMW with their once stellar reputation make an engine with so many problems? They are not the ultimate driving machine anymore. Sad.
Lies. I didn't register the new battery in my 335i and 6 years later, the alternator and battery are still
fine.
Don't make up facts.
Now that's cool that you know Sreten from M539 Restorations! that alone made my day Alex!! And that's the ski bag in the rear arm rest
He's the best!
@@LegitStreetCarshe IS the best!
I have an e90, and it has the ski bag in the pass through as well. Apparently the Germans feel it is necessary! 😂
@TheTulerie yep liquimoly for all mine too
Direct translation for the bag in the back seat: The load of the ski bag protects the driver and does not hinder the journey. operation manual observe!
Its pretty cool actually. I mean I don't know how to ski but if I did, I'd want the bag!
Not really to protect you from snow but to prevent cold passing through from the back. It works seriously well and prevents windows from fogging up. Without it you pretty much have to blast the defogger full time.

Two of my five favorite car RUclipsrs in one video? Love it.
Finally the collaboration, we all wanted!😍 Loved to see Sreten!
Ski (snow) sack....keeps your wet/snowy skis from getting the back seats wet when you've put them in the trunk.
Dude I am not a mechanic, know nothing about fixing cars but seriously your videos suck me in start to finish. Bravo sir, bravo.

Pull the Vanos solenoid on the bank with fluctuating pressure and clean it with carb cleaner. 90% chance it fixes your problem. Super common with BMWs from this era for the vanos to be clogged when they get run with low oil.

It makes me sad seeing so many of these falling apart and being misused, or gernading themselves. I love the look and presence these give
I love Streten, watching both of your guys videos all the time 🎉
Alex: "Strapped in? Strapped on? Strapped down?"
Me: "Yes."
I was pushed back a little by the amount of plastic under the hood of this car - not even my '03 Cruiser had that much.
Looking forward to more on this! I've had a 2007 X3, 2012 X3 and now a 2015 X5 Diesel. (just did the DME replacement) Love me some BMW content.
I had 550i with same engine for 3 years. Loved it. Did use a bit of oil but 600 nm of torque was awesome.
21:30 Ski bag. Avoid getting slosh ice into the car and cutting the seats when loading the skis. My E39 had it too.
Ahhhh man, a video with two of the best! M539 and LSC! Get yourself to Germany with him and round the Ring! Great car Alex👌🏼
The Bag in the Backseat ist for Skis. You can load it through the middle without getting your seats dirty or wet
If you play football can you get a ball sack?
29:25 it's a ski bag so you don't damage the leather in your interior. you can load them from the back of the car. :D
@LegitStreetCars iv just started watching this episode, i hope its a broken engine that you get to rebuild like the cl 65, you have done it all except bmw v8's. specially this 4.4..this will be an awesome build to restore and upgrade and modify.
salute as always.
Your code is coming up for the vanos sensor the exhaust one on the drivers side behind the intercooler and the oil is most likely coming from the oil return from the turbos on the line you gotta remove both turbos to be able to fix it it’s within the hot V section oil leeks there and fills up and flows out the wep hole on the back side of the motor
you can stick a camera scope between the turbos and see if it’s wet down there
Great to see two of my favourite channels collaborating. Sretens channel is amazing also
The turbos cause a good amount of blow by which increases oil use and oil dilution...some engines use a ton of oil from day one... and the BMW oil sensor is notorious for not telling you how low it really is that an extended oil changes you're just looking for engine problems.
Darn too short of a video Alex! Keep up the good work buddy!
That’s for the pass-through for carrying skis and that bag is just there to keep the interior clean if the skis are wet or dirty.
The hole in the back seats is called a ski shoot. It's meant for your ski's. A lot of cars have them. BMW is just fancy with the built in cover.
Having worked at a Copart yard, I can tell you the folks checking the cars in have little if any technical background. It is very likely the 'crack' did refer to the crack in the engine cover.
01:49 "Very sensitive to proper maintenance?" LMFAO!
BMWs... the best way to get to drive a whole fleet of courtesy service loaners since British Leyland Motors went under. 😂
Funny Ace Ventura snippet cause I'm currently watching it on TV as your video play. My buddy has one and I think his timing went out
That engine is prone for stretched timing chains and it causes rough running before it skips a tooth and totals the engine.
Im 100% convinced the insoector at the auction marked the plastic engine cover as cracked engine. Alex you know why im so confident lol!
It's a ski bag. Out the skis in the truck thru the pass thru in the rear seat. My '86 Audi 5000 Turbo Quattro had the same thing.
That black bag thing between the back seats is for skiis 👍I had the same thing in my old RS4.
The stiffening plate is definitely important because too much the subframe is aluminum and the plate stops the twisting so it doesn't crack
