Insane WEDGE SURFING carnage and wipeouts

- The swell nicknamed "La Bamba" rocked the Wedge with HUGE, crazy surf pushing all types of surfers into crazy wipeouts.
I was at the Wedge on Friday, April 23rd through Sunday the 25th. While this wasn't the biggest surf I've seen at the Wedge it was one of the heaviest.
The Wedge is located in Newport Beach.
Thanks for watching! I'm Brad Jacobson and I'll see you on the sand.
Music: Sandy Pierce, Trio Particular, Kaleido Sea and Rafi B-Levy
This is actually the most enjoyable Wedge video (of the several I've watched) from last weekend because you not only capture all the carnage, but it looks as though you stand a bit north of all the other photographers and get an interesting angle that seems to show more.
Thanks! I tend to go where the other photogs aren’t (even though I got very wet shooting this one 🤣)
I love the laid back music when all the other videos of the Wedge this weekend were super intense! Great video as always!
Thanks for the kind comment!

What's amazing is that more people aren't seriously injured.
My dad told me he and his friends used to visit the wedge in the 90s just to watch people get hauled off in an ambulance one after the other lol
Did my man at 7:36 seriously just go RIGHT at wedge????????
Great shots. Props to the lifeguards keeping an eye out on those violent waves.
Absolutely
Thanks for not only some sweet Wedge carnage, but also an into to Trio Particular. Lovin' the tunes! Seeing this reminds me of my stupid 15 year old ass getting rolled on a 12-15ft day like this. The wipeout at 3:50 probably looked just like what happened to me. I went face first into the sand. My neck cracked under water and I thought it was all over for me. I got rolled in the washing machine for what felt like an eternity. I popped up to immediately have another wave break on my head. Back into the washing machine I went. Gnarly 2 wave hold down. When I finally surfaced 2 lifeguards were in the water and the patrol boat was rounding the jeddy. I lost both fins and had my leash pulled through my body board. I can only attribute my life to pure luck, or my dad as my guardian angel on my shoulder. I was done for the day after that wipeout. Seeing this brings back memories. LoL, 44 now and much wiser, although looking at this makes me want to drive down from Santa Barbara and hit the waves again.
Great video! Sometimes I forget the carnage that happens there. We should remember and respect with a name such as Balboa.
Thanks again Brad. You definitely 'bring home' the carnage ~
Thanks!
Nice, loved the old school music and commentary. Reminded me of surf movie nights in the late 70s.
Thanks! Those movie nights were awesome. I still produce one surf movie every year for a local movie night at the theatre.
It is amazing to see how much surfing has progressed over the last couple of decades. In the late 90s when the Wedge got big it was only bodysurfers and bodyboarders, you would rarely see a surfer there. Now they outnumber everyone else, even the skimmers are getting in on the action.
Soo true!
Board shops love this place. Keeping them in business one board at a time.
Thanks for the music, now following Sandy Pierce. Love the surf style music.
That music is perfect for the carnage the wedge creates
WECHZE-- American Indian. You, highlighted japanese surfers, once again!
RESPECT, a lot of good content coming from the WEDGE the past few days but I really enjoyed your edit and the jams. Thanks and keep it up. Love from B-MORE stoked.
Thanks, appreciate the kind words
Brad... you knocked it out of the park... great edit... keep it up .... always watching....
Thanks Mike!
You really capture that Endless Summer narrative vibe, I love these vids!
Love your vid. Has the endless summer vibe to it. Great job
Thanks! 👍
Nice job you got a lot of good clips and the music is perfect.
Thanks
I was there yesterday yewwww
I love the retro style of your videos! I probably commented this before but they are amazing!
Getting some Bruce Brown vibes. Love your channel. Fantastic framing, documenting the environment and great commentary. Just sent this channel to two of my surf watch threads. Keep up the grind, I see this channel growing. 🙌🏼🤘🏼
I like the Bruce Brown-esque commentating, keep doing your thing bud!
Thanks. I admire Bruce’s work
Dope video..nice editing, great sounds. I bet the fusion bgg on the jetty was good.
Finally haha I’ve been waiting for your video after the last couple weeks of good surf
Appreciate it!
When I was a kid(I'm 63) people didn't even attempt to surf the wedge because boards were too long!
this a truly wild comment i just
found
jesus, transplanted guy living in europe, best video ever...I am in the wrong country! )
Thanks!
How many people had spinal injuries??? Gr8 videography, Brad.
Thanks John. Yeah, I’m surprised more people aren’t carted off
Nice! Bravo! Brother! "A Film Worthy Production''
"La Bamba!'' Is Totally Gnarly & Sick Dude!
Always Epic @The Wedge When it's Firing - ''But''
This Time ''Radically Rippin Gnarly Balls 2 the Wall!''
- Thnx Dude! 👌😎🤙 -
Thank you!
Well done, Brad! Amazing video!
Thanks! It was fun
The good old wedge.
Nothing says fun like a face first three story drop to the sand🤙🏾
this video reminds me why I don't surf The Wedge. ;)
Always smart to value your life 🤣
@@BradJacobson i was at elporto today getting hypothermia. I should value my life more! LOL. #addictedToSurfing
YES
Absolutely
Like 5 or 6 dudes made it out on a wave. Everyone else just did not give a fu k! Do they not get crushed like cans when they pull into those crazy closeouts? Damn! (Love the videos!)
Thanks! Crazy more people don’t get taken away on stretchers
Great footage of the carnage, you definitely had the best camera angle. Kudos.
Thanks. I like to stay away from the pack of photogs
B.E.A.C.H....Best Escape Anyone Can Have
Brad, I'll add kudos for your production, editing and footage. The next Bruce Brown (we'll see)? Shazamed the interesting song tracks. Thanks.
Thanks George! I’m a huge Bruce Brown fan
Bradley my man.. I subscribe to Koa Rothman's "This is Livin" , "Raw Beefs" and your channel..you know how to make a video my friend!!! Your narration and footage and music are EPIC!!! I started making super 8 surf videos way back in the early seventies when my dad gave me a camera for Christmas.. being a local in Oxnard no less I filmed some epic days at Silver Strand... I would film Malibu in the summer and Oxnard in the winter. I would go to parties and project my surf videos on a wall with either the house music playing or my own playlist.. I like to use "YES" a lot and "Emerson Lake and Palmer ".."Welcome back my friend to the show that never ends!" Thank you for upping the game!
Great vid, great music!
Thanks 👍
I used to work at a hostel where we had a weekly movie night. The guy in charge put on a big wave surfing movie, (accidentally evidently), I think it’s just called, “Giants”. After a couple of minutes the guy in charge said it was boring and put on another movie. I couldn’t bring myself to tell him that I had already watched the whole almost three hour movie and was enjoying watching it again. To each his own, I guess. I don’t think I’ll ever tire of watching waves, whether someone is riding them or not. The wedge is a wave freak show, or a freak wave show. I wonder if some of those guys can even get out of bed the next morning after taking a beating like they do.
My dad says that he could have been the first guy to bodysurf the wedge. Before the north jetty was finished he was out there doing his thing, and that is, riding the side wave from the corner, and backdooring the wedge, and on super south, almost SSE days, he would make it all the way through the cylinder, down the beach. And no one was ever there. He was so amazed at the unique phenomena there, that he went and got other crazy watermen type guys of the time, that would actually go out and he told them about it. Carter Pyle, Flippy and Walter Hoffman, and Mickey Munoz, among others. But back then the population in California was very small. There were very few even board surfers up and down the coast. When all those friends of my dad's went out there, they were blown away. The news spread and more crazy thrill seekers started showing up. But the average level of body surfer back then was very primitive. Most body surfers were terrified of the wedge back then. And nobody even dreamed of surfing it. Each decade more and more people got into the wedge until what we have today. And still the wedge is an ultimate chaotic power zone of shear raw mother nature, that for the most part, can't be tamed. Some get lucky, some of the time, but everybody gets schooled all of the time.
Great video Brad!
Thanks!
This is Best of the Beast!
Crazy swell for sure!
Nice tunes!
Nice recap of an epic swell! From Tyler's incredible barrel to JOB sponging it, it was a killer Saturday at Wedge. Whose the music at 5:45?
I was up at point dune that weekend. Choppy early morning. I think OC was cleaner from that swell.
Heard it got really good up there.
@@BradJacobson It was really choppy in the morning, but I saw a video of it later in the day and it was glassy and going off! A couple of locals were ripping some well overhead sets when I was there. The parking was all gone though, even at 6:30 when I got there. So we paddled over from drainpipes.
@@waltysalamander And you wonder why the parking is all gone - even on the wrong tide... Shhhhhh....
Dude...your coverage is cool
Thanks Donald
Lots and lots of video clips assembled into patterns. The intensity makes the July 6, 2020 video ("Biggest Waves I've Ever Seen") look light by comparison. The relaxed music is needed to cool off the hot pace a bit. With the crowds, filming out front was risky. The reward was beautiful video, especially the late afternoon.
Someone featured in your madhouse of heavy water might be looking for a raw video showing lulls between sets to prove to friends/significant other that it's not all madness. Or maybe not.
Do these people get injured? Do they get slammed into the sand or what? This shorebreak looks insanely heavy
Yep. Usually at least one injury per big swell
I really like the music you use in your vids
Thanks!
Nice work on the beach and good edit! 🤙🏼
The ole Wedge
Great vid!!
Can you share who is on the soundtrack? Great stuff!!
Great job man, awesome video!
Thank you
It was firing at Surfrider! Too bad it was on the weekend, double the crowd
I heard it was insanely crowded
Awesome video! Love the music and narration. Who’s the musician? Digging the vibes 100%
Between Redondo Breakwall, Hammerland, and the Wedge - I think you may have 'a type'...a certain flavor of sadistic mistresses...they're all beautiful at first, in their own way...but it almost always ends abruptly - sometimes in pain and misery... I know...I've got the same 'jones'.
I think Black's was showing you something, earlier this year... Size and passion are great...but sometimes quality and stability are what you need. That's the direction I headed.
I gave serious consideration to coming down to Wedge for this swell. But looking at the size and period, along with the early morning high tides... I knew it was going to be a demolition derby.
There were probably a half dozen spots that would have been perfect on the morning tides. Some further South, not too far from Black's; others in the N. Bay. The only question was wind direction and wind speed - everywhere was scheduled to have a little funk and crumble. It looked like a possible midday session at a N.Bay Supertube. Reports confimed this, along with a sizeable crowd. But the wind forecast was good for the late arvo session at a Reef/Point that I appreciate.
Prime conditions achieved. Any bigger, and it would have been starting to close out, on Saturday. Winds were grooming it, and the sets kept breaking on the outer reef - through the high tide. The moonlight was good, for a revised and extended session, as well.
Please tell me you’re a writer. You are good
@@BradJacobson Thank you. Very nice of you to say. I'm many things, but mostly a ne'er-do-well.
I do a fair bit of writing, but mostly in YT and Blog Comments' sections... These are impermanent creations, soon to be lost, like tears in the rain...
I just got a new computer. I might start producing something. Thanks for the encouragement.👍
Where ya' gonna be, tomorrow at dawn?
Phenomenal
Thanks
I wonder what the injury report looks like. Gotta be long as hell.
I think the IL came out Monday 🤣
Your vids are soooo goood
Thanks Isaac

1:41 …………. SICK !!
We use to call The Wedge, "Sand Crabs", because that is what you become if you wipe out.😂
To beat "The Wedge", you need to be angrier than The Wedge!...
Kinda reminds me of Bruce Brown. 🤙
So I've only been surfing for a few years now and lack the knowledge that only long time experience would bring... How come most people don't use a leash when surfing at the wedge? Is it cause it's a relatively shallow water beach break?
Why don’t people wear leashes at the wedge?
Love the vids, did you see Jamie?
Yep, he's in the video. He was riding a boogie board and a raft because of a recent injury he suffered.
Brad, any chance for a video with raw sound? Like Brent's, or Beefs?
Have some H8r-aide... This is an old-school format - that takes more work - and that some of us find very enjoyable. No shade on Brent or Beefs... But this is REFINED, not 'raw'.
@@anotherworldviewispossible Even Brad talking over the raw footage with natural sound would be better than talking over music with no natural sound.
@@eggolise Yeah... I think you're missing the vibe that he's going for.
@@anotherworldviewispossible I know what he's going for, just asked if he could do one raw video.
@@eggolise For sure he's capable of that. It would take less skill.
I can't believe people on instgram are still complaining that this swell was mediocre" Idk about you but 12-16ft Wedge and 4-6ft Malibu is better than "mediocre" in my eyes
Was that JOB on an Odessa soft skin board? I thought he had a bum knee?
I feel like I’m listening to endless summer 2 haha
was gonna say that too
I noticed that right away the first time i watched one if his videos
Is that Barba on the white booger?
Not the best.
But that's the sickest wedge I've seen.
Big long nose drips after a session like that.
It was crazy. Super thick
Is leashless safer or something? all these guys running around letting their boards crash into the sand.
🤙😎🤘
How can these surfers survive from that ??
Brave souls.
Haha waves are small right now on the east coast Australia
Did you see the raw beefs squad?
No but I shoot away from the crowd.
Dane reynolds cameo?
I’d love to see him there
Poggers
1:54 you're welcome.
Ahahahahahhsh I'm in pain just watching these soldiers sacrifice themselves to mother nature lol
I cringed watching it live 🤣
looks like Doheny
Very similar 🤣
3:00 you can see Jamie O’Brien wiping out
And at 7:10
He was charging
The boards hurt like shit when theyre pulled away cuz its fuckin attached to your leg
Chiropractor, anyone?
