Tribute song to the "Roadies," who set up all of the Band's stage equipment, sound, instruments, lighting etc. Oh yeah, then they have to take it all down and load it back into the semi-trucks for the next concert in a different city. Jackson Brown just wanted to give these unseen folks a little well-deserved credit. Good man.
There are the roadies and the locals, did the locals for many shows. Those roadies really know how to liad a truck like a giant game of tetris. When and where each case goes on which truck. Only thing wrong is that grand piano is going to be covered and off almost as fast as guitars
That look of dawning awareness on your face when you suddenly get the context, I swear I got goosebumps all over my arms and the back of my neck. Wow. And it's partly because I love this song so much, and I'm immersing totally in the music at the same time that I'm enjoying the reaction.❤
Yes a fantastic number. The inimitable David Lindley on pedal steel and falsetto on Stay. One of my all-time time favorite performers and songs. Thanks.
Jackson Browne is One of the Greatest Songwriters of His ERA He Also Wrote All but 2 Lines of Take It Easy by The Eagles! My Next Favoritewl of His is The Pretender The Two Vocal Solos of Stay ard Phenomenal #2 Falsetto by David 12:40 Lindley He Also played Steel Slide Guitar We Lost Him in 2023😢😢
Ace, you actually had me almost spit my drink out near the end because you were cracking me up.😅. Your extraordinary reaction to an extraordinary artist and performers leaves me in such a good mood. ❤
The album Running On Empty was JBs 5th album, recorded and released in 1977. The theme of the album is life on the road for a band and, staying with the theme, the whole album was recorded while on the tour promoting his previous album The Pretender. This song was the album's final track, and would have been the first song performed during the encore portion of the concert. A lot of the tracks were recorded live in concert (including this one and the title track), some were recorded backstage or in hotel rooms, and one track was recorded on the tour bus while in transit. Bands had released live albums before, but by the mid-seventies recording technology had become good enough to produce studio quality recordings. The other voices on Stay were Rosemary Butler, a well-known back up for a lot of bands in the 70s-80s, and the late David Lindley a talented musical virtuoso who could play anything with strings. Lindley plays the lap steel guitar on this track and sings the high falsetto version of the chorus, a tribute to the original version by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs.
Awww…. I wish you to listen to this live version. There’s nothing else like it. Especially the men and women that come in with a high vocals. You’d be amazed! I still listen to it but I promise you if you watch his live version it will blow you have the water
During Stay - female vocal is Jackson's longtime backup singer Rosemary Butler and then the falsetto vocal is David Lindley who also plays the steel guitar. you should watch the live video version.
My brother has been a tour driver for 20 years.. having logged thousands and thousands of miles crossing the US. It's a hard life away from family. I always think of my brother out on the road.
He used to finish his concerts with this duo - the level of enthusiasm from the crowd would determine how many encores. The Promoter don't mind, and the Union don't mind ...
Richard Pryor was a popular young comedian in the mid 70s, appearing in some movies on into the 80s. I think the only one that I've seen was "Brewster's Millions," which was interestingly different. For me, he's most notable as the co-writer with Mel Brooks on the mid-70s movie "Blazing Saddles."
He was great in Stir Crazy with Gene Wilder. He also stole the scenes from Diana Ross in Lady Sings the Blues. In the movie , he had a small part as her piano player. He was so real that that made his part bigger.
The higher octave organ sounding instrument was David Findley on steel guitar. He passed away last year, I believe (RIP). He also did the falsetto chorus that you noted. Considered one of the best studio musicians.
They're the first to come and the last to go Working for that minimum wage... "The Load Out" is an Ode to Roadies. "Stay" is a Doo Wop song written by Maurice Williams and originally recorded by The Zodiacs in 1960. It was rewritten by Jackson Browne.
""They're the first to come and the last to leave - working for that minimum wage..." The Federal minimum wage in the United States of America in 1977 was $2.30/per hour. State Minimum Wage varied as some states supported the work of people in the community by supplying continuing education for higher learning and unionization of workers for better pay and benefits or *didn't.*
I find this song interestng because i believe most performing artists are glad to get off stage. Jackson Browne wants to keep performing. If the union don't mind. And if the roadies don't mind...
To the people saying "the live version is the best".. the original song on the album was recorded LIVE. It's just like this '78 live version, just with better sound engineering.
Please please please do the live version, you have to see all of the singers. The high pitched singer after the lady is a guy who's absolutely fantastic 😊. Heres the link to Jackson's channel and the song live, youll love it even more 💙 ruclips.net/video/eSWy1-wk0OI/видео.htmlsi=AAWNOdCMpNWCSdj5
Lost respect for him when he was accused of domestic violence against his then girlfriend Daryl Hannah. But before that went down I was a big fan and went to several of his concerts.
Love ''live' - LIVE Concert is better. > ( the falsetto some 8 ; 40 in is the slide guitar player ) near always, to me. I greatly prefer concert DVD to LP's. be it. D.Krall. Paris, A. Netrebko. LaTraviatta or G. Dead. movie. ( disc 2 , no very dated 'interviews )
Watch the live version sometime, it's amazing.
yes yes yes
@@threekidzmom04 .. X ten or more !
Live version is the absolute best!!! This song takes right back to 1978. The gorgeous hair! I was 22! Living the life!!

Jackson Browne is an American poet and national treasure and should be considered so . 🫡🇺🇸❤️
The Pretender
You need to see the live version of this ❤❤❤
He has a channel specifically for Live performances. Hopefully he'll do it there. You should subscribe, it's AceTheHeartAgain
Oh, it's worth watching the live video

Well said. Me too.
you should do the video-seeing David Lindley do that chorus of Stay. RIP David-we miss you.
Stay is a cover of the original recording from 1960 by the doo-wop group Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs
Yes a fantastic number. The inimitable David Lindley on pedal steel and falsetto on Stay. One of my all-time time favorite performers and songs. Thanks.
Yeah, that's magical for sure.
You should watch the video. One of the best on RUclips. Also, this album was recorded live and is about life on the road for a band.

I have never heard a Jackson Browne song that I couldn't relate to. The music is great, but the lyrics are fantastic!
Stay? Who the hell would want to leave? Jackson and his band were pure bliss.
Ace, you actually had me almost spit my drink out near the end because you were cracking me up.😅. Your extraordinary reaction to an extraordinary artist and performers leaves me in such a good mood. ❤
😂😂😂😂😂 I'm glad you enjoyed it, Steve.
When I was in the Navy years ago as a 19 year old the cassette got me through
You need to watch the original video of this performance to get the full benefit and see first hand who all are involved to make this happen.

I was deeply moved my first time hearing this, many years ago!
❤
I was a teen and this song was a gem!

He has a Live Reaction channel too. Go subscribe it'sacetheheartagain Hopefully we'll convince him to react to this live performance.
Ultimate shout out for his crew.🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
RIP David Lindley😇
It's actually one song with two parts. Both parts tie together so well on multiple levels.
During Stay - female vocal is Jackson's longtime backup singer Rosemary Butler and then the falsetto vocal is David Lindley who also plays the steel guitar. you should watch the live video version.
The live BBC version is the ultimate video to react to!
Oh my goodness, I've been hoping you get around to this 😊❤
My dad took me to see jackson Browne when I was a kid
It is amazing. When it transitions to Stay, it's nice, too.
My brother has been a tour driver for 20 years.. having logged thousands and thousands of miles crossing the US. It's a hard life away from family. I always think of my brother out on the road.

We love your talk. That's why we keep tuning in!
❤❤❤❤❤ You don't know how excited I am that you're reacting to Jackson Brown and you picked this song!! 😍 This was Great! Thank you!
You figured it all out perfectly. You nailed the lyrics ACE, you really take the time to listen and hear it all. That's awesome!
Just watching the smile come across your face tells me so much about you! Keep on rocking.
It's a good one, clever how he incorporates "Stay".
Watch live version so you can see the instruments. And singers. Worth it.
The last falsetto voice was David Lindley, who is also the slide guitar player
Check out Doctor my eyes Great song
You're right -- there is no equivalent comparison of the songwriting back then to today's.
His "Next Voice You Hear" is an anthem.
The higher octave organ sounding instrument was David Findley on steel guitar. He passed away last year, I believe (RIP). He also did the falsetto chorus that you noted. Considered one of the best studio musicians.
You really need to watch the live one, so much you won't realize with this song unless it's live 💙
such a tribute to the roadies/stage hands everywhere.
This whole album is live...recorded on tour
Either in concert like these two songs,
Or in the hotel room... various places, but no studio
All talent
You will love the live version! Check it out...
Can't go wrong with Jackson Browne.
Take that!
David Lindley, great guitarist sang the 2nd high "stay". You might look into his catalog.
Nice reaction commander
Awesome reaction, Ace!
The pretender or running on empty next please
Classic. There's a even better live version on RUclips. In England I think.
They're the first to come and the last to go
Working for that minimum wage...

You Should be watching the live video. Amazing.
Appreciate your reaction and look forward to your reactions to 'Dr My Eyes' and 'The Pretender' also by Jackson Browne.
People used to actually write songs about real lived experiences.
I find this song interestng because i believe most performing artists are glad to get off stage. Jackson Browne wants to keep performing. If the union don't mind. And if the roadies don't mind...

The people in the crew are called “roadies.”
Lost respect for him when he was accused of domestic violence against his then girlfriend Daryl Hannah. But before that went down I was a big fan and went to several of his concerts.

Got to watch the live version. It's OK if you do it in your spare time. No reason to react.
He actually has a live reaction channel too called It'sAceTheHeartAgain. Go subscribe and we'll convince him to react there 👍
@BridgetBailey47 Thank you for the info. I will check it out. Not all videos are better live or even good, but this live version is awesome.
@@wtrs261 I agree 👍
Wrong version. Do the live.
