That's Dave Lindley with the guitar on his lap and the falsetto bit at the end. If you watch it again, pay attention to the moment as he's walking over to sing. The band is laughing... They know it's an iconic moment in the song that nobody was expecting. This song has been 10/10 for me since it was new. Thanks for taking the time to love it too.
Jackson Bowne concerts are like sitting with him in his living room. He always interacts with his audience in a personal way. It's very special. I'll say this again though, you should give the song "Sky Blue and Black" a listen. It's a gem.
I have seen him once with his band and I think 3 times without. My mom turned me on to him when I was young....well, I really didn't have a choice, lol. I'm thankful now, though. Just turned 40 and every time he is "close" we go to see him. Sky Blue and Black...he is so good at painting a picture with words. Amazing.
The 70s was the era of fabulous singer-songwriters. Carole King, James Taylor, Carly Simon and Jackson Browne to name just a few. It was a great era in music.
I'm retired now, but spent years as a sound engineer and this song has always held a special place. The line about slamming doors and folding chairs stirs memories of concert halls, long days, and the honor of being a part of the show.
Thank you for bringing Jackson Browne to me. I have never really listened to him before even though I am in my 70s. The only thing I knew about him was that he was hung out with The Eagles and Lynda Rognstad. He reminds me of Van Morrison, you could check him out.
I was lucky to see this live right around the same time this was filmed - he sets the mood and makes the audience feel connected. One of the greatest singer songwriters of our time.
It's almost obscene how incredibly gifted Jackson Browne is in both writing and then performing his songs. Running On Empty is one of my all-time favorite albums. There wasn't a bad song on this entire album.
Quality music, quality musicians, quality voices. That's what we had in the '60s and '70s. Music of this calibre was the norm. So when older people today disparage much of the music of today, it's because they have a gold standard by which they can compare -- music with actual melodies, lyrics with actual meaning, no autotune, and because of all that engaged audiences.
The issue is that the modern-day "quality" music that you speak of is around. It's just not on the radio. Back in the day, it was the radio that brought us new music. Today, it's places like RUclips. Tedeschi Trucks Band, Gov't Mule, Widespread Panic, Billy Strings, Sturgill Simpson, Sierra Ferrell, Molly Tuttle, Jason Isbell, and Railroad Earth are some great examples. Really good music is being made in 2024. You just have to work a little harder to find it. 😉
@@ajschroetlin2196 I'm aware of a lot of good music. Back in the day good music was the norm, not the exception. The names you listed are amazing artists and I listen to them all. Sierra Ferrell is probably my favorite artist right now.
The entire album Running on Empty was recorded while on tour, in concert, in motel rooms and even on the tour bus. This song is about the band wanting to just play music. The woman with the beautiful voice is Rosemary Butler and the long-haired fellow is the fabulous David Lindley. RIP, David. ❤Jackson! ☮❤🎶
Nice Reaction. The 1st part of this song has always been special to be since I was "the sound guy" at smaller gigs for 20 or 30 years (part time). They do get there long before everyone else to set everything up; then work with the musicians during the soundcheck; then are mostly invisible until after the gig when they have to tear everything down. It's nice that Jackson Browne gave tribute to those people in song.
Saw Jackson Browne last year. He still sounds great and it was a lovely evening…..he made a 4000 seat theater feel so intimate….as someone else said; a class act. And this was the show closer.
I was born in 60s and was lucky to be at his Detroit show on this tour. With my mom and dad. Not many bands offering that type of wholesomeness anymore. Great reactions!
"Doctor, My Eyes" is another GREAT song, by Jackson..He was a music machine, back in the day...Those were glorious times, for music, for sure!..Btw, he only ever played this live. It was a tribute to the people, and his roadies, to close out shows.
I saw him perform solo about 10 years ago. It was just him, a piano and 23 guitars lined up across the stage. He performed all his hits acoustically alternating back and forth between playing the piano and picking up a guitar. He'd pick up a guitar and say, "I wonder what song's in this one." Then he came back to the same venue the next year and played all those songs with a full band. The place was singing along and rockin'. Two outstanding shows.
In my case, the thing I cherish the most besides family and friends is music. It heals the soul and brings joy. Yes their are radio stations in the US that still play classic rock. I must say I so appreciate the reactors listening to this music and seeing how much you appreciate what was the best music ever created by such talented people. I'm 68 and lived through it and got to tell you I really miss those days. Peace and love my friends!
You are so right! I am old enough to have gone to many concerts (including Jackson Browne) back in the day. It was so different then. The musicians were so talented, and they so connected with the audience. Miss those days... Jackson Browne is truly a class act. This was such a great reaction. Thank you!
I agree with you 100% that the music from years back was created out of the love of music instead of the love of the fame and money. Most of these types of creators crave privacy, really, and just want to earn a living doing what they love.
I am from ‘75 and consider myself lucky that I was brought up with music from that era. I agree with you fully that those were the times of sincere music from the heart ❤️
This is from his Running On Empty album about life on the road. The entire album was recorded while on tour. You will love the video of the song "Running On Empty". Another one of the BEST live performances on RUclips. (cut and paste) Jackson Browne - Running On Empty (LIVE) 1979
Nice tribute to those around Jackson Browne. Yep, surprises from David Lindley! He did do a solo project that I remember that got some airplay back in the day. Lindley's cover of Mercury Blues was the one I remember most. Nice reaction!
I was a teenager in the 70's and Jackson Browne was my favorite music artist. I love his voice and his song lyrics. The Load Out/Stay is my favorite song of his. I never saw him in concert back then but I have seen him in concert twice in the last few years. The first concert he was with James Taylor. The second concert was with only Jackson. He still sounds great. He's written songs for other people, including "Take it Easy", which he co-wrote with Glenn Frey of the Eagles. I read that Jackson Browne lived downstairs from Glenn Frey at the time and was stuck after he wrote "Standing on the Corner in Winslow Arizona" and Glenn helped him finish the song. He then let the Eagles go on to record it.
Your analysis is spot on. There are performers, and there are artists, who have the talent to express their feelings & visios to everyone through their words & music. So many emerged from’65-‘75, and I was lucky enough to be growing into an adult during that time. Jackson Brown was one of the best.✌️❤️🎶
Jackson Browne is actually very approachable, a friend of mine went to a concert of his an arrived very early before the show and noticed him preparing the stage moving stuff around and went down to the stage and asked him for his autograph. He was very kind and gracious... There are video's on RUclips of him being cool with fans... "Shape of a Heart" is one of his songs shat can make my heart hurt...
I am 100% with you!!! This song is one of the few (not really true... among many) that still makes my hair stand on end today! I play the song myself with my guitar. Certainly not as beautiful as Jackson, David and the band but always a tear rolls...... and every time I am grateful for this beautiful song!
I am a self confessed hardest of the hard rockers, yet Jackson Browne is right up there in my number ones, and possibly the artist that gets my most playtime overall. You 2 are great. My wife and I have been fans of Jackson from the time we met. I started listening to Jackson when I was in my first year of college (1971-72). We have seen him in concert several times including 2012 in Milwaukee, WI. We were 2nd row center and he was the most engaging genuine performer I've ever seen. He always has the best musicians. One of my highlights was seeing the band (most of them anyway) that played on this album including the genius David Lindley who can play anything with strings.
Thanks guys, I love this performance. It brings back memories. In the 70's, I had a job as a roadie and sound mixer for a touring band in Texas. We just played nightclubs and the like. The band broke up, as many do, but it was an adventure for me. You just can't beat good, live music.
This album, and particularly this song, is what convinced me to become a recording engineer ! Waaay back in 1978! And that’s exactly what I did for 40 years. Peace
I was a teenager in the 70’s and absolutely loved this song and all of Jackson Brownes music, i was so happy to see him in concert at the height of his success --sooooo good!🎉

Your genuine appreciation for the music I've loved for years warms my heart. You're good souls. 3. You're dead on when you talk about these older artists doing it for the love of the music, not the fame and fortune. Great observation!
My absolute favorite Jackson Browne song, he wrote The Load Out and rewrote the lyrics of Stay and put them together. They used this as their closing concert number for years. I had no idea that you two were such Rockers! Thanks for another great reaction!
I was 14 when this song came out and I thought it was awesome that he wrote a song paying tribute to the people behind the scenes that work harder than anyone and never get the glory! This will give generations the glory they deserve! ❤❤ this song and reaction, Thaks!
I discovered Jackson in 1970 when he released his first album, and I've been a fan ever since. I've seen him in concert three times - in '74, in '78, and once more after the turn of the century. It is SO COOL to see the two of you discover this brilliant artist/ composer, and you're absolutely correct that the music from this particular era (60s - 80s) is more creative, more genuine, and more alive than the processed, auto-tuned digitized pablum that is passed off as music today. Keep listening to Jackson. There's a lot more beauty to discover there.

Thanks for the observation about musicians in the '70s. True. And, also, the audiences had no problem waiting for a song to build and build --- the singer, the band, the crowd, they all took the journey of each song together. So fun!
This is a tribute to his roadies who load and unload the equipment night after night. What a tribute. I doubt if anyone has taken the time to acknowledge them in song.
@@cpmf2112 If you wanted to persuade someone that Bob Dylan is a great poet, would you recite "Lay, Lady, Lay"? Do you really think "The Load Out" is representative of Jackson Browne's better lyrics?
This used to get played ALL the time on the radio when I was a kid, we'd sing along all the way through, including the high voice part, which was easy to reach when we were kids 👍😁
The whole album this song is on is a great group of songs. It's called "Running On Empty". It is a live and not live combination of recorded songs. Don't wait for people to suggest it, just listen, it may not make you money but it will make you happy!
Thanks for this. He's still making great music imo. Frist saw him with my (then) future wife in 1975. Saw him with our granddaughter last year, and many times between, whenever he's close. Like his music the shows are always intimate and personal. You get the sense he would do this on a street corner if it came down to it. He put up several video's on YT of him playing from home during covid. You ought to check them out. Anyway thx again your positive reaction warms my heart.
Glen Frey (cofounder of the Eagles), used to live one floor above Jackson in Los Angeles when he first moved to town. Glen learned how to write by hearing Jackson Playing the same 20 seconds of song over and over and over and over and over...................for weeks, adding a word here, changing a word there, slowly building the song and Glen said by the time it was written, he hated it. For two months all he heard from dawn until the middle of the night was "Doctor My Eyes" .
Another banger Guys, your reaction to the music of my youth, re-affirms that I had pretty good taste back then. It also means that you and your listeners, have pretty good taste now. Thanks for giving us a second chance to listen to these great artists, that would otherwise stay un-listened to in our C.D., and L.P., collections. Stay safe, happy and together. Mark from London.

Jackson Browne came across as a very blue collar artist, his lyrics, although seeming sophisticated were very relatable.

With the great David Lindley on slide guitar. RIP
Would So glad to see you reacting to other Jackson Browne performances! I just knew you both fall in love with him as I once did.
